With the large herd they may be looking to give out some tags

RAPID CITY, SD -

A look from above the Black Hills gives new perspective on the number of elk that call the area home.

Game, Fish and Parks is trying to get a better idea of how many elk live in the Hills. It brought in a helicopter crew to fly over and do a count of the animals.

Earlier this week, they came upon a group of 1,200 elk. The crew handling the aerial photography says it has never seen a herd this large.

ELk is resident only here and a Draw and takes several years normally for preference points but it may speed up as the elk population grows.

Sheds would be cool to Dan-o

The News tonight that ran this story said this heard in the photo was approx 1200 animals and made up approx 1/4 of there prior estimates ... They have 5000 square miles left to survey.
