1.) Swamp Fox - 04/02/2016
Please post your score ASAP after posting your pics. Bluecat will give a running tally by team as appropriate.

To score, you must post a picture of you, your bird and your weapon, plus pictures of the spur and beard measurements. Alternatively, reference the beard and spurs against a common object such as a sheet of paper or a coin if you are on your own and cannot photograph a decent measurement. Give us the date, the measurements and the total score. The scorekeeper will confirm the score and enter it in the contest. You can tell the story of your hunt here or elsewhere, but everything else must be here in this thread for your kill to count toward the contest.

Here's a summary of the rules and scoring requirements and method. Remember that posting recipes or cooking tips improves your team's chances whether you kill a turkey or not.

1- A picture of you, the bird, and weapon posted to the Kill Reporting Thread within ten days of the kill is required to place in the contest. Provide the date of the kill, the measurements and the total score for your bird in the Reporting Thread, along with the story (if you'd like). This year, we're also going to post a turkey recipe or cooking tip along with or ASAP after the kill report. You can write out a full recipe, summarize one, provide a cooking tip or post a link to a recipe or cooking tip. In the event of a tie regarding bird measurements, the contestant or team with the most recipes/tips will be declared the winner. You do not need to kill a bird to post a recipe or tip, so a hunter who skunks can still help his team by placing in the contest this way.

2- A picture of the beard (still attached to the bird--DO NOT CUT OFF BEARD) and tape measure or ruler should show the length. Show entire length of beard and tape measure, including the tip. Measurement is to the end of the longest strand.

3- A picture of each spur and a tape measure showing the length. Spurs must still be attached to the legs. Measurement is along the outside centerline, so with spurs that have any curve to them, you'll need a flexible tape.

4- We will cut you a little slack if you are on your own and your measurement pictures aren't perfect. Please try to provide good references, though (see above). And if a thirteen year-old girl can figure out how to get her whole BFF posse in a bazillion selfies together, you can probably figure out how to get one picture with you, your weapon and the turkey in it.

Scoring:

Scores will be determined by spur length x 10 plus beard length x 2. A vertical bow kill earns 10 bonus points. Providing weight is optional and will not count toward your score.

For instance:
Beard is 8.5" = 8.5x2=17 pts.
Spurs 1" & 1-1/8" = 2.125 total spur length x 10 = 21.25 pts.
Vertical Bow Kill Bonus Points: Plus 10

So: 17 + 21.25 = 38.25 pts. total for a gun or crossbow kill. A vertical bow kill would add the 10 bonus points for a total score of 48.25.

All kills to be scored to the nearest 1/8th inch.

Only 1 bird may be entered per contestant. If you take a bigger bird after you have entered one already, you may upgrade to the better bird. When you upgrade it will cancel out the previous entry. You must be registered for the contest prior to the date of your kill. You cannot kill a bird and enter it for a teammate.

Each member's bird will count toward the team's total points.

In the past, in the event of a tie, we said we'd match the teams' top bird, second bird, third bird, etc. until we had a higher score for one team. Instead of that, we're going to use the recipe/cooking tip thing described above as the tie-breaker. This eliminates the possibility that one slightly bigger bird in one team slot creates a victory over a more successful team effort on the other side (e.g., one bird from Team A beating two from Team B, or two birds beating three). In the event the recipe tie-breaker method does not result in a winner, the original Top Bird method will be the final deciding factor.

Good luck, gentlemen.

This turkey contest is going to be so great, you're going to get tired of winning.
2.) Ohbuckhunter - 04/02/2016
What kind of prizes will you be sending out to the winners. CE wants to know
3.) Swamp Fox - 04/04/2016
Oh, does he now? LOL

Tell him the winner gets a warm fuzzy feeling he can keep all year, and lord over the rest of us until at least the start of the deer contest...:-)

I know he's angling for a new crockpot, but this is the best we can do around here under the circumstances...
4.) bluecat - 04/05/2016

Here's a couple of pics from Saturday's excursion. Called in two nice Toms but both hung up - one at 20 yards and the other at about 12. The one that hung up at 12 needed to take a few more steps into my lane but wouldn't do it. This is the part of turkey hunting I just don't get. Why not at least check out the decoy?

Anyway, because of the encounters, it was a great hunt.
5.) Swamp Fox - 04/05/2016
12 and 20 from the blind or from the decoys?

I'd put that blind right out there in the open if tucking it in brush limits your shooting opportunities. The turkeys don't care. I've had them march right up to blinds and practically climb in with me.

Classic decoy/no decoy questions: If you need decoys to get their attention from a distance, what's to keep them from hanging up out of range? And if you don't use a decoy, what's to keep them interested when you're in the wide open?

I'm to the point where I ALMOST never use a decoy unless I can hide it around a corner or bend or hump or blowdown, or some other obstacle to long-range visibility. I guess I'd rather err on the side that my calling's not interesting enough or the gobbler's not hot enough for a bird to come looking for me, than to make the mistake of giving a tom what he's looking for (visual tease) and have him be a tom ("Come hither, woman!").

Then on the other hand, sometimes you sit there wondering if you're an idiot for not putting a visual bait out...Because I've blown sets on birds that couldn't see what was doing the calling, and blown them on birds that could see too easily. LOL

So, I mean, like, who really nos all this stuff anyway?

So much has to do with the mood of the bird. If they don't want to do something, they just ain't gonna do it. I had a strutting gobbler 80 yards out a couple of weeks ago and he wanted to see what was doing the calling around the bend---I even called him and his little jake buddy back after they left---but he wasn't going to leave his sure things to investigate. I'd say that was the beginning of the toms getting with the hens in any real sense. Two days before, he wasn't henned up.

BTW, he wouldn't gobble on the ground, but I had four jakes yawping up a storm for several days, which I took as a sign of that it wouldn't be long that the boys and girls would soon be together.
6.) bluecat - 04/05/2016
Twelve and 20 from me. I had a turkey decoy to my left to catch a bird coming from behind and a decoy in front of me for the birds walking in front. Both decoys were about 5 yards from the blind. I setup in a spot they like to travel. I've always heard (and I know this to be true) you want to be between where a turkey is and where it is going.

The one bird came from behind and to my right. He'd answered my box call initially. I called him up to the fence where he just stood there strutting. I switched up to the diaphragm and clucked and purred him closer. He stood in the cedars and gobbled constantly but wouldn't check out the decoy.

The next bird came from the opposite direction from behind me and hugged the fence the whole time, only pausing where I was. I would have had a shot at both had it not been for the cedars I was in. I might try being out in the open but I have to tell you, it will be tough. It goes against everything rational. I have seen the videos of turkeys walking up to blinds out in the open. I think it's trick photography or at least the Drury brothers editing.

I like the notion of making a turkey look around for a bird that isn't there but I think (like you mentioned) it only works if there is a lot of structure around.
7.) bluecat - 04/05/2016
I will try the Dave Smith hen that is on the ground maybe next time. Use that as my only decoy. Hell, I don't know what I'm doing.
8.) bluecat - 04/05/2016
Classic decoy/no decoy questions: If you need decoys to get their attention from a distance, what's to keep them from hanging up out of range?
I always try to put the decoys facing the opposite direction from an advancing turkey if possible to prevent hang ups. I guess it would be the same theory as a buck decoy that one puts out that makes a buck circle around to face off.

It's always damned it you do damned it you don't. Swampy, keep giving me ideas, I've got to score one this year, my mojo is suffering.
9.) Swamp Fox - 04/05/2016
Yeah, I always like to pretend that when I set up my decoys, they're always facing away from investigating gobblers, so the gobbler thinks the hen just can't see him yet...LOL...Closer... closer...

You're doing what I'd do if I were using decoys. Just get those damn cedars out of the way, LOL.

10-4, I'll give it a go.
11.) crookedeye - 04/05/2016
i had a nice tom about 12 to 15 yards to the side of my blind ..the 2 hens were in the decoys. i could see him struttin but just not comming into my shooting window.. then i lost patience and tried to lower the window i could get a shot and i think i kinda spooked him.

i had a dsd jake and a upright hen plus the two live hens in the decoys ..i should have just waited a little longer..the bird with the size of a pea outwitted me again..
12.) Swamp Fox - 04/05/2016
Well, if it makes you feel any better, it's really more like the size of a walnut...

:-)

13.) bluecat - 04/05/2016
The problem with the DSD and Avian decoys is you can't blame the decoy realism anymore. Damn!
14.) Hunter - 04/07/2016
Turkeys are flopping here in Texas! These aren't mine so don't get excited BC! Couple more weeks before I'm free to hunt. Ton of birds but lots of jakes making hunting difficult.

Congrats, Ted!

I'll have to check the rules on how you score a double beard! I'm pretty sure NWTF has this sussed out, so we'll use their guidelines, if any.

Looking forward to the story and pics!

47.) Hunter - 04/24/2016
The story of "Gimp Foot."

Gimp Foot, a legendary bird ranging throughout the ranch. NOT! Just a gobbler I've been seeing all season around a pond on the north end of the ranch. He's always been alone, had a good beard and had a noticeable limp, hence the name Gimp Foot. We built a blind on the west end of the pond where I have placed several hunters throughout the season. A couple of birds have been killed there but Gimp Foot has always steered clear whenever someone was there.

Here at the end of the season, I decided I would pursue Gimp Foot. I enjoy going after a particular bird instead of just hunting randomly. My first sit was in the afternoon. Assuming he was blind shy, I set up in a small clearing south of pond. I was close to dry river bed where most birds roost. Heard a few far off gobbles late and had a couple of hens pass by but not a very productive sit. Next morning I set up across the road north of pond. A lot of gobbling early got my hopes up. Soon a bunch of hens moved in followed by 3 jakes. Hens were close, stripping seeds from grass. Jakes stayed on road keeping an eye on the hens. It wasn't long before I heard another gobble and four long beards started in my direction. No Gimp Foot though. I was so henned up that I wouldn't have been able to shoot anyways. Everyone stayed around , feeding & strutting for a good 10 minutes. As they started moving off to the east, they began gobbling again. That's when I heard a single bird gobbling farther off to the east maybe 200-250 yards away. I figured that may be Gimp Foot and that he wasn't roosting where I assumed. So, a new plan was developed. Moved east of pond about 100 yards, found a low clump of brush and cut a hole in middle where I could set my chair. This would be my afternoon set.
That afternoon, I climbed in around 5pm. It was pretty warm and I figured it would be late if anything were to happen. After setting up, I used my box call once, waited 10 minutes before giving a soft mouth call. I then sat back not expecting anything. About 5 minutes later, I can see red head moving through the grass to my left at about 30 yards. Caught me by surprise. I could see a beard and then I saw the limp..... That's all I needed. Fired and it was over. I was happy getting him but it was a quick and non-action hunt. He didn't make a sound coming in. I just out-maneuvered him. I guess you have to be lucky sometimes!

I thought this was the way you do it, but I checked to make sure. Scoring multiple beards on a turkey, from the NWTF:

If you have an atypical bird (multiple beards), measure each beard, convert them to a decimal number, then add those figures together and multiply by two. This is the number of points you receive for your turkey’s beards.

Easy peasy.

Photo bucket was flaky last night..

Interesting story. I've missed 5 birds! I'll never use a red dot scope on a turkey gun again!
66.) Swamp Fox - 04/27/2016
You're letting them get too close! LOL
67.) bluecat - 04/27/2016
Dan-o is really making us look like chumps.
68.) bluecat - 04/27/2016
Found out you are supposed to use full length arrows on those bullheads so they will clear your sight and riser. I will see if they will work with my setup. I may have to use them next year. I don't have any full length arrows right now.
69.) Swamp Fox - 04/28/2016
It's always that or problems transporting the heads (in your quiver, say) that I've heard people talk about as barriers to getting into that type head. I don't know if there is anything out there without those issues.
70.) bluecat - 04/28/2016
They make quiver adapters which I purchased. It's a cover for the blades that also allows you to use a conventional quiver. I checked out my setup last night and I would need to put one of the blades down so the other two will not hit my site. I can rotate the nock but then my cock vane isn't pointing straight up. (go nuts DP).

I've got some O-rings specifically for that purpose. I need to see if my spine for the arrow is okay with that head. Supposed to hang a pillow on a clothesline as a target.
71.) crookedeye - 04/29/2016
i remember a few yrs ago i cut some arrows glued them all up, screwed on one of my muzzy's and the blade hit the shelf of my bow..my trophy taker didnt come up quick enough..thats when i statered shooting expandables..
72.) crookedeye - 04/29/2016
Nice bird dano..have you been lifting...
73.) DropzOfWild - 05/03/2016
Good job Dropz!

Tell us about the shot and where you aimed.
I led him to believe that his lover was in one spot and he actually was going to pass me ...he came down the clear cut and when parallel with me stopped stood up to do that turkey look and shot him just behind his beard broadside to me.
74.) DropzOfWild - 05/03/2016
One week left for my season .....nice birds fellas !
I hope i can slam my second this weekend.
75.) Swamp Fox - 05/03/2016

No doubt, you are the best hunter on this gigantic forum.
(for donkey deer)
93.) crookedeye - 05/30/2016
haters always hate.. i no you guys dont believe me but that deer had donkey genes in it.. that deer was a true trophy..
94.) Swamp Fox - 05/30/2016
LOL...

There's still a chance someone has a couple of days left somewhere...I wouldn't rebuild your mantle to accommodate another trophy just yet...
95.) crookedeye - 05/30/2016
swampy its over...i won just like i said i would..
96.) Swamp Fox - 05/30/2016
I kept waiting for my invitation to hunt the mountains of Pennsylvania late in the month, but it must have gotten lost in the mail...

There's one day left, so I suppose I could still get a call this afternoon...LOL
97.) Swamp Fox - 06/07/2016
This is what I have so far. I think I've got everyone's bird correctly scored.
I'm slow on the uptake these days, and here's another example. I forgot about Hunter's double beard, so when Crookedeye started proclaiming himself the winner---LOL ---it went right over my head for a week. But I did tell him not to rush to build a new mantle for his trophy...

So, a week late, and with apologies for dropping the ball, I'm declaring Blue Man Group the winning team for the 2016 contest. DropzOfWild receives Honorable Mention and Dan-o receives the HuntingCountry Legend Award for blowing up the contest...LOL

Now I guess we have to start thinking about the deer contest...:p:pop:
98.) bluecat - 06/07/2016
I should get an award for the number of excuses I had.
99.) Swamp Fox - 06/07/2016
I went for quality over quantity in the excuses department this year...:bang:

Now you've got me thinking----Yeah, I know: "Ruh roh!"---We could add another dimension to the contests if we competed for "Most Excuses" and "Best Excuse."

I'll have to see if I can work that in to the Rules Book...
100.) bluecat - 06/07/2016
Maybe best fabricated story? CrookedEye would win that every contest.
101.) Swamp Fox - 06/07/2016
He's the Paul Bunyan of tall tale tellers---Which makes makes me wonder, now, if he stole his donkey buck story from Babe, the Blue Ox...
