1.) Ventilator - 04/22/2013

Well, i had a pretty decent 4 1/2 days of turkey hunting in NC. Started out thursday evening near the house. Went after work to pickup a trail cam . Decided to go ahead and take my gear with me. As i walked down the ridge my camera was on, i yelped a few times. It was immediately answered by a weird sounding gobble. I eased down the ridge and setup. Two more yelp sequences equaled two more weird gobbles. A few seconds later i see a bird in the thick stuff. It hopped up on a blowdown and i saw a nice beard. At 45 yards i decided i better shoot or it would be gone. BOOM!!! All i could see was the head and then lotsa floppin. Walked up on a bearded , GOBBLIN HEN. 9inch beard and 14lbs.

On friday, i had a three day hunt in Western NC with a local charity organization called Backyard Bow Pro. Friday it rained like &*^(^!! About 755am, i looked out the blind window and a big strutter was standing 5 feet from the closed blind window. He then came in quick to the DSD Jake deke/hen setup and fanned out again. I proceeded to shoot out ass feathers at 7 yards, with my bow ...pathetic miss!

Saturday and Sunday were mostly uneventful as the sorry weather had the birds quiet for the most part. We hiked up and down several HUGE NC mountains. I was beginning to think turkeys werent worth that much trouble!

This morning a buddy of mine was in town and talked me into going out one last time with the shotgun. We got out to the farm by 5:45am. Around 6:10 we got a bird to answer a crow call on roost. We hustled over to the ridge he was on to setup. We got too dang close and busted him off roost! Disgusted, we decided to ease on in and setup anyway. Turns out there were 4 hens roosted nearby as well. They flew down right nearby and scratched around a while. At 655, we got another Tom to gobble. Didnt take long and he was moving in quick! He gobbled several more times and stuck his neck up above the rise. After waiting for Dale to film a little footage, BOOM!! , bird number two with the gun. Havent shot a bird with a gun in 17 years before thursday. Felt good to shootem in da face as Dan-o says. :)

Only got out opening morning. They put on a great vocal performance but they were henned up and I couldn't get them to come off of 'em. Had to work most every day since then. Season ended this past weekend but they already went silent and hens are nesting.
