after catching that wiper a couple years ago, my reel hardly cast anymore ..he was taking the drag out like it was nothing..i'm looking for a good brand reel for like 60 bucks are something....just using 4lb test so wants a good reel??

A few of my favorites that I have long-term experience with are north of that price range, but two that saw action last year and into two months of this year's season so far look like they will be long-term winners that will fit the budget.

I am using several Penn Fierce 2000's and Abu Garcia STX-10's for panfish, bass and a couple of other light/ultra-light applications. I haven't caught a hybrid or striper on one yet, but it's just a matter of time. I've seen the drags in action and have been pleased, but I have by no means given them a torture test (so far).

Look up weights, drag ratings, line capacities and gear ratios on mfctr. websites to see what will work for you.

The Penn Fierce 2000 is a 6:2 reel with a high line capacity and a slightly higher drag rating than the Abu STX--10, which is a 5:2. I consider them different reels for different applications, but both more than acceptable for what you might be trying to do.

Duh...I meant 6.2:1 and 5.2:1, respectively ...Just in case somebody wants to call me on it, LOL...

The Fierce 1000 is a 5.2 reel with the same drag rating as the 2000, if that's what you want. I looked it up for you. :wink

You can thank me later. :-)

the reel was an walmart one ..I always set the drag..that bigass fish was peelin the line out..it was either him or me.. you no when they say when you use youre arm mussels up? I battle that thing for 29 minutes he tested my endurance..kinda like Kenny when he did that swim and walk are whatever..
5.) Swamp Fox - 05/18/2014
LOL...

What you call a wiper and we call a hybrid or Bodie bass are some of the hardest-hitting, runningest freshwater fish, pound for pound or otherwise...I can imagine it was a tussle...:wink

It always helps to eat a banana... Just don't bring one on the boat.
