Talk about entitlement:

I have a position open in a department that is under my oversight. A department Foreman is taking early retirement. Fine and good. I advertise and post the position seeking a replacement for the foreman. The position is open to anyone in-house as well as the general public. (The idea obviously; let us fill the position with the most qualified appropriate applicant we can find.)

Well, earlier today, I got an earful from one of the other staff members that feels the position should just be handed to him. He told me in an irate rant, "It is a slap in the face that we did not go exclusively to him and just offer the position to him."

Wow. I'm still flabbergasted at his take on this matter. Somebody please tell me something...since when were there ever any guarantees?

Just because someone is a warm body in an organization for 10 years, and they never go above and beyond for any thing….doesn’t mean they are entitled to dam thing. If anything he should be thankful that he still has any position.

I TAKE IT A STAFF MEMBER MAKES LESS THAN A FORMAN.

I think in certain cases it can be insulting to not discuss an opening with the staff before opening up the search process to the whole wide world. Emphasis on "discuss." But I agree that most private businesses don't and shouldn't have a promotion system disconnected from merit and competition, even from the outside.

I don't think everybody gets that, though. Some people aren't used to competition and an environment/stage of business development/survival where "It's not personal, it's just business." My crystal ball says they'd better stock up on clean underwear. Lean and mean are here to stay and coasting will be reckless.
