7.) Floyd - 08/31/2014
Hunter, are they only showing up at night?
8.) Hunter - 09/01/2014
Yes, night only
9.) Swamp Fox - 09/01/2014
You'd think with that cold front moving through to push it down to 83 at nine at night, they'd be moving more, LOL.
10.) billy b - 09/01/2014
It hasn't been that cool:bang:
11.) Swamp Fox - 09/01/2014
The week before last, we had a few days where the heat index was between 103 and 107...I was working on the lease or doing a tiny bit of hunting in that...Completely nuts. When we got a couple of mornings in the 80's it felt like fall...LOL

Never saw a deer in the evenings from a stand, and none on the roads at night or in the pre-dawn. Saw a few from stands in the AM's, but it was all over by 7:15. :re:

Keep those pictures coming Hunter.

Don't worry though. CE's global podunking is like ... well, like drunk Otis Campbell of Mayberry on The Andy Griffith Show taking himself in and out of jail all on his own. It's cute.
15.) luv2bowhunt - 09/02/2014
Good grief Ted that's ridiculous!

Tell me you're allowed to shoot one of these.
16.) Wild Bob - 09/02/2014
WOW! That's some headgear!
17.) Swamp Fox - 09/02/2014
Two years and three days ago, this rascal was under one of my stands in broad daylight. I was probably on the computer talking to you knuckleheads.

Ted's not allowed to shoot these! I just get the scrubs.

I know the deer on the top, he's only 5.5 so he gets another year's reprieve. The other one.........he may be in trouble
19.) luv2bowhunt - 09/03/2014
Your 'scrubs' would be a trophy to me here I'm sure.

Nice buck. Is that NC?
21.) Swamp Fox - 09/03/2014
That's SC. I just came across it while cleaning up some old cards (finally) and thought I'd throw it up here. If I get some more time I'll see if I can find some others. I have a few impressive ones, but none from this year as I haven't begun to collect cards this year yet.

I probably saw him from a nearby stand at 70 yards that October. The good news is that chances are high that this buck is still out there (semi-educated opinion based on some fact, LOL).

I don't have any NC cameras out because just about all I do in NC is public land.
22.) luv2bowhunt - 09/03/2014
Where's your sense of adventure? Just carry 3 steps, put them up high in an inconspicuous place. Works like a charm.

Post some pics please, they're few and far between on here. I totally blame Alex for the slow traffic. The buck has to stop somewhere.

Oh and btw. Was going through some D&DH mags from a month or two ago and saw and interesting study. Don't have it in front of me, but I know it was a southern telemetry study about how hunter movement effected mature bucks. Bottom line was the mature bucks averaged 55 yds farther away from hunted areas then they did before the season. I needed to read more to see the particulars of the study. Were they free ranging, how hard was the hunting pressure, blah blah blah.

The younger bucks averaged 25 yds farther from the hunted areas. I will try to follow that up with more info if I can find it and can stay motivated to discuss anything on here.
23.) Swamp Fox - 09/03/2014
I would like to see that. I might even recall the article. If it's what I think it was, the deer were free-range, but there's a 50-50 chance I'm wrong.

25-55 yards farther out than expected is from here to Mars to a bow hunter. Don't tell me you've never had to explain that to a rifle guy. :wink

As one of the best hunters I know likes to say, "A rifle is better than a bow." LOL
24.) bluecat - 09/03/2014
Well what about that theory that your supposed to trample all over your area so the bucks get used to you?

25.) luv2bowhunt - 09/03/2014
Incorrect. Can't pattern you.:wink

Same thing happens with farmers and orchard guys. Deer don't even worry about them.

Lately, I only hunt NC when I can't be in SC. I have about had it with Sunday hunting restrictions, and the NCWRC gave away the best week of bow season to muzzleloaders AGAIN a few years ago (after giving away what was previously the best week under the old system a while back...So bow hunters are oh-for-two lately, best case scenario-- Oh-for-three, really, but don't get me started on ___________....Well, just don't get me started...).

If I only hunted private land, I might not be as fired up, but since what I hunt here (and enjoy most) is big tracts of public land, I'm spitting nails. Though I enjoy blackpowder and rifle hunting, they have become too crowded where I am accustomed to roaming, to the point where I'd almost rather compete with 30 friends and acquaintances in a club than put a lot of effort into public land anymore. I'm in a place where I can hunt on public land and see no one all day long, but as long as I know they're even in the woods it just sucks the fun right out of it. It's not a safety thing. I think it's that I want to hunt deer moving the way I've figured out, not the way they're being moved about by others.

At least in a club you can make friends with some of your competition, the food might be good, and someone might have a good-looking niece.

I'll see what I can do about pictures.
27.) luv2bowhunt - 09/03/2014
I understand. PA added a muzzleloader doe hunt that always takes place in the middle of Oct. for 2 weeks, right before the pre-rut, right in the middle of bow season. When they came out with that season, my sightings of rut activity plummeted.

Does are moving to the thickest cover, taking the bucks right with them. Had to adapt my strategery and learn to hunt the thickest cover also. It puts you in the right place but getting a mature buck to cooperate and step into a shooting lane is another story.

Hunter, I assume the ranch does something to track individual bucks over the years, estimate the population, and manage its pictures. How? By buck? By age? By area?
34.) Hunter - 09/04/2014
We use trail cams for 2 weeks this time of year on every protein feeder (30 feeders), 10-15,000 pictures give a pretty good idea of density and buck/doe ratio. During the season, everyone takes field notes of what they see (age/sex) plus a lot of video taping is done from the stands. Lease is trophy hunters looking for bucks 6.5 or older and at least 150 inches. They are also given a quota of management deer they have to shoot. By the time a buck reaches trophy status, everybody pretty much can recognize him. It takes a consensus of head leasee and owner to verify age.
