1.) DParker - 09/16/2014
The Otterbox Defender I keep my Galaxy S4 in is a great smart phone case...

..., so long as you don't mind the extra bulk it adds to the phone. I don't. It fits fine in my pockets as well as the iOttie Easy One Touch 2 car mount that holds it on my dashboard...

...and does an excellent job of protecting the phone from damage due to it being dropped by fumble-fingered goobers like me. But it does have one weakness: The screen protector is a thin, flimsy film of flexible plastic (like most screen protectors) that does a fine job of protecting the phone's glass screen from scratches and other marks, but would be utterly useless should I happen to drop the phone screen-side down onto a protruding hard object, like a jagged rock or some such. Not only that, but the plastic film is prone to scratching and nicking itself, as well as buildup of fingerprints, smudges and just general marring of the surface. Eventually it begins to noticeably impair the screen visibility. So I got to looking around for a solution and, after reading enough user reviews to make my eyes bleed settled on the idea of replacing the plastic film with a Spigen GLAS.tR SLIM Premium Tempered Glass Screen Protector.

As indicated by the name, the GLAS.tr is a thin (only 0.4mm thick) sheet of tempered glass with a hardness rating of 8~9H, which makes it very resistant to scratching by even sharp objects. And it's given what Spigen calls an "oleophobic" coating that prevents oils (like those on your skin) from clinging to the surface. And should the screen strike something hard enough to break the GLAS.Rt it's designed to shatter into small pieces, like an automobile windshield, rather than into jagged shards. It is also supposed to take most of the impact and protect the underlying phone's screen, to a reasonable degree. I'm not sure how much impact it can absorb without damage to the phone's screen, but I've read a lot of claims from customers that it has saved their own phones that way. Hopefully I won't have to find out.

Installation was fast and easy, and because it's so thin it fit just perfectly between my S4's screen and the inside edge of the front half of the Otterbox's plastic housing (once I removed the glued-in plastic screen protector). I would imagine that it would fit most...or probably all...other protective cases that allow for a screen protector as well. Since I've only had it installed for one day I can't yet speak to the GLAS.tR's durability, but I can say that it does not interfere with operation of the S4's touch screen, and is so far doing an excellent job of resisting fingerprints and other smudges. An occasional small smudge will appear, but it's easily wiped completely away with any bit of clean cloth (a pant leg, a shirt sleeve...whatever) And the instant improvement in the clarity of the screen view compared with the beat-up plastic protector was dramatic. The tactile feel of the surface is a big improvement as well, being much slicker than that of the plastic film.

Although Spigen retails the GLAS.tR for $34.99 I got mine via Amazon for $24.99 with free Prime 2-day shipping (along with one for my wife's phone too, as well as a new charger to replace the one in her car that crapped out.) Honestly, the increased visibility, slicker surface and resistance to scratches and fingerprints alone make it worth that price to me. And if it should end up saving me from suffering a broken screen on my Galaxy due to my clumsiness, it will have paid for itself multiple times over.

Too late...I clicked on it already...They really should put the whole thread title on the front page, LOL

I'll let you know how many words before you lose me...
3.) Swamp Fox - 09/16/2014
Okay, I got all the way down to "8 squiggly 9 H"...

Then I slogged on and came to "oleophobic" which I assumed meant "fearful of Oleo", but whatever it means it sounds gay...
4.) DParker - 09/16/2014
See...this is why your posts are disappearing.
5.) Swamp Fox - 09/16/2014
LOL..

See, that's the injustice of it all.

Who else around here remembers oleo?

:wink
6.) DParker - 09/16/2014
Who else around here remembers oleo?
I do...but we just put it on toast. I don't want to know what you were doing with it.
7.) Swamp Fox - 09/16/2014
LOL....

I'll tell you one thing that annoys the oil out of me: a phone screen you can't read in any kind of decent sunlight. The phone I get most of my calls on these days is like that. I tried some type of screen do-hickey Verizon recommended (it is an LG phone), but it was shite, as the Scots say.

When it comes time to replace any phones (really, when I get postally PO'd enough and then finally get around to it), readability outdoors is going to be the first thing I check on any new candidates.

Any ideas on that?
8.) DParker - 09/17/2014
No, and that's my biggest gripe too. I wish I did have a solution, because it would be worth a fortune. I was hoping to find an anti-glare screen protector that also has the properties of the GLAS.tR, but no luck. Glare reduction seems to be incompatible with tranparency and sturdiness.
9.) billy b - 09/17/2014
Mine is the same as DParkers, couldn't be happier with both.
10.) Swamp Fox - 09/17/2014
Well, not only glare, but also it seems like the color screens fade in bright light. I don't remember this ever being a problem with my (really) old phones before color. I still have a couple of black and white phones that are active and every once in a while when I'm really frustrated I think about switching all my numbers around, LOL. My texting career would be over, though, LOL. I need a qwerty keyboard for that or people that want texts from me will just have to get over it. :tap::wink

Just to let you guys know, the engineers at "JB Enterprises" the highly acclaimed company that came out with critically acclaimed archery products such as "the Bow Butler" one and two, the "Fart Baffler", "The Dookie Sac", "Tree Slider" and the list goes on, Have come out with a couple more outstanding products that will put JB's guys way ahead of the crowd! They have come out with what they call "The Beaver Box".
The "Beaver Box' is made to cover your smart phone in a manner that completely seals out air and is water tight! Guaranteed at depths of over 300 feet!
The Vulcanium Crystalized Titanium embeded screen has been proven to be so hard that a cat can't scratch it! Just when you think they have done it all, the Beaver box is also used along with "Beave Scent Wafers" to not only provide a scent covering aspect for the hunter, but completely surrounds the hunter with an invisible mosquito shield! I'm a little nervous about getting into a Beaver Box and finding I'm in over my head.

How good is your instruction book, and what happens if I want to switch to a new Beaver Box with better features?
