What causes all the hair to fall out of a deer? Looks like it had the mange or something. Little guy was in for a cold winter.

That's not a deer it's an aardvark.

I found one brief report from Pa. (I lifted the picture above from that article, but there was no provenance given for the photo, so we are left to assume it is of the deer mentioned in the report)--Pa. Game Commission said at the time that the deer could have been born like that. Lice were also mentioned as a possibility, but not by the Pa. Game Commission.

Could it the be the on set of CWD?

I'd be very leery of that...
7.) bow-fishhunter - 10/16/2014
sorry for the lack of info, I was tagged on a the pics on face book just to look at I have no idea when, where, how and who shot that deer.
8.) Swamp Fox - 10/16/2014
Maybe someone will recognize the tag.

BTW, the pic I posted isn't supposed to be in any way connected to BFH's pic. I picked it up from a 2013 news blurb about a Pa. sighting.

It looks like a PA tag and we have to attach to the ear, not the antler.

Taxidermists' Full Employment Act of 1947?

Is everyone poking holes in bucks' ears?

We have CWD in our area. Not prevalent, but it is present. While hair loss is listed as a possible side effect of CWD, I've yet to see it in any of them in our area. The ones I've laid eyes on suffering from CWD are skin and bones with ribs clearly showing.

The little bit that I've dug up on hairless deer also does not leave me with the impression that CWD is much of a possibility. I have come across multiple references to "aggressive" lice, though. I think that's mostly in cases of hair loss, though, and if I were a betting man I'd say these deer never had any hair to begin with.
