1.) Swamp Fox - 03/19/2015
You no what to do...

2.) Swamp Fox - 03/19/2015
I'm in.

Whoever's hunting earliest this year (besides me) is going to determine the deadline. Seasons are already open some places. Texans and Cornholers are coming up fast. I suggest a March 24 deadline but I'm open to going out to March 31 if someone can convince me that we have a lot of lurkers or FNGs who want in.

I'm only here as unofficial Gobbler Meister (Shut up!) until OHBH wakes up from his coma, if he ever does. It's his baby back (mmm, babybacks!) if he wants it, but time was a-wastin', so somebody had to do sumpn PDQ. :tap: :fire:

This just in:

I neglected to put an end date on the turkey contest, I think. We'll go out to May 31 unless there are some objections.

Also, if there's a demand, I'll put more people in the contest if they request it in the sign-up thread, which you're in now.

You must be signed up for the contest before the kill. Otherwise, I can't count your gobbler for competition.

3.) bluecat - 03/19/2015
Gobble gobble!
4.) Swamp Fox - 03/19/2015
Nineteen views and two players....LOL

And that's assuming Bluecat meant to say he's playing....:wink
5.) Hunter - 03/20/2015
You can put me in if you want but I'm not sure I'll get to hunt. We have a lot of hunters this year.
6.) bluecat - 03/20/2015
You might have to offer a sign on bonus. :re:
7.) Swamp Fox - 03/20/2015
The bonus is you get to hang out with the internet's most awesome hunters...

Hunter, I expect to see at least a few videos of multiple gobblers double-gobbling, then...LOL...Don't cry "I gotta work" to me....
8.) crookedeye - 03/20/2015
this is going to be a banner year ..we have one for sure, a gobble gobble... hunters in but probally wont hunt..you no i'm always in for a turkey contest..
9.) bluecat - 03/20/2015
Bring it weaklings, I'm a 'playa'.
10.) Swamp Fox - 03/20/2015
When's the first chance you have to hunt? Merriam's or Easterns? Or hybrids? Public land? Where's Crablegs? Why'd he change his name? Are you two still friends?

I got like a ton of questions today...
11.) Swamp Fox - 03/20/2015
Those questions were for Crookedeye, but Bluecat can answer, too. It's liable to be another slow Friday around here, LOL.
12.) bluecat - 03/20/2015
The only thing I have to do today is cross all the Big Twelve teams off my bracket for losing. Other than that we can get into personal stuff if you need to.

Turkey opener is April 6 here (bow only).
13.) bluecat - 03/20/2015
My turkey decoy is named Loretta.
14.) bluecat - 03/20/2015
You think DP will stop waxing his truck long enough to hunt?
15.) Swamp Fox - 03/20/2015
Wax on, wax off...You never know what he's really up to...
16.) bluecat - 03/20/2015
...or what he is really waxing.
17.) bluecat - 03/20/2015
I just can't see him scratching the bed liner or taking it on dirt. I bet he joins the contest and then just dry-labs the whole thing with some grainy photos of the turkey he got in 04. I'm pretty sure Luv2 does that too.
18.) bluecat - 03/20/2015
We just expect that from Luv2. The whole red plaid wool shirt from 1964 isn't fooling anyone anymore.
19.) bluecat - 03/20/2015
Look here is a picture of my turkey next to my Dodge Rambler and Bear takedown. :bk: :fire: :poke:
20.) Swamp Fox - 03/20/2015
My turkey decoy is named Loretta.
Loretta is a great name for a decoy. I might have to steal that.

I already named one of my look-out hens Miss Prissy, so Loretta might be for a breeder, LOL.

I like Tina for a feeder...

21.) bluecat - 03/20/2015
LOL!

Loretta isn't going to play any games. If she does I'll pattern my shotgun (if I owned one) on her.

Although this is her first year, I think the guys will be lining up.
22.) bluecat - 03/20/2015
Love is in the air.
23.) Swamp Fox - 03/20/2015
It might be funnier if the breeder hen was Miss Prissy (and cartoon-correct, too, since Miss Prissy had a crush on Foghorn Leghorn) but what can you do? I don't have a breeder yet (unless I pimp Mary out) and I already named the lookout.

Hmmm...I'll have to think about this....

:p:pop:
24.) bluecat - 03/20/2015
I see your point. You generally want a "Miss Prissy" type (Racquel, Brigitte, Farrah, Pamela) to be your breeder. The gingham dress, bobby socks and pigtails complete the fantasy for every tom.

You want your lookout hen to be old and craggly like Dianne Feinstein. They are expendable. Run an arrow through them by mistake, oh well...

Your feeder hen should be named Rosie. Her chief role is to consume stuff quickly and in great quantities all the while complaining what a horrible place this is. If feeder hens gets left behind and ground up in a harvester, oh well...
25.) Swamp Fox - 03/20/2015
LOL...That's some outstanding thinking right there...

26.) bluecat - 03/20/2015
Just don't put "Miss Prissy" in a hoop skirt.

27.) Swamp Fox - 03/20/2015
Just one of these days, I'd like to see one of these groups stand up on its hind legs and just say, "Shut the front door!" and go ahead and have their party or fundraiser.

I know you can't tell me not to wear a sombrero if I want to.
28.) bluecat - 03/20/2015
I don't want to say you can't use a hoop skirt, but if you do, then you should name your tom "uncle tom".
29.) bluecat - 03/20/2015

I would like to see more "wet t-shirt" fundraisers personally.
30.) Swamp Fox - 03/20/2015
I'd settle for seeing them on TV...Pre-recorded, even...Maybe on youtube if I'm hard up.
31.) Swamp Fox - 03/20/2015
I don't want to say you can't use a hoop skirt, but if you do, then you should name your tom "uncle tom".
Frankly, my dear, I don't give a cluck.

I usually leave Uncle Tom at the cabin...

I find it's a little awkward to tote him through the woods, forget about driving through town.
32.) bluecat - 03/20/2015
The big thing is when you put out the decoys you don't want to segregate them.
33.) Swamp Fox - 03/20/2015
At least we know who the males and females are.

This may be easier for turkey hunters than for college administrators, which may say something about college, or administrators, or both.

[I]One thing is for sure: As “gender identity” becomes more complex, so do the decisions women’s colleges have to make. After all, even a decision like Bryn Mawr’s doesn’t cover every situation. For example: What if a student starts at the school as a woman, but midway through decides to start identifying as or even medically transitioning into a man?

In October, the New York Times covered how this specific situation was handled at another women’s college, Wellesley. One student had simply checked off “female” on the official application but then began to identifying himself as a “genderqueer” male named Timothy once on campus. Wellesley has had transitioning students before, so Timothy was not only allowed to stay but didn’t face any problems at all. That is, until he tried to run for class diversity officer and students started a petition saying he wasn’t qualified because he was a white man now.

Although, now that I think about it, maybe this explains why some of my girls don't seem to flip the gobblers' switch...

LOL! That is some kind of messed up.
35.) bluecat - 03/20/2015
That is why I give to the "human fund" every year just to make sure everyone is included.
36.) Swamp Fox - 03/20/2015
We should get Crookedeye's thoughts on this, as a turkey hunter. He's been following the Bruce (?) Jenner situation pretty closely...

For some reason...

LOL
37.) bluecat - 03/20/2015
Well one thing for sure on that Bruce Jenner situation. He won't have to have anything lopped off. Chris Jenner already did that.
38.) Swamp Fox - 03/20/2015
Ouch!
39.) Deerminator - 03/21/2015
Ya mean he's an anatomically correct Ken doll?
40.) crookedeye - 03/21/2015
I heard bruce jenner is getting his nose done...a petite little nose..i still think he should do his hair in curls.. if he's going to do this he might as well go all out and put his hair in curlers...
41.) Swamp Fox - 03/21/2015
Do you no if he's picked out a new name?
42.) crookedeye - 03/21/2015
the last time we had this contest is when obh was in charge... we had like 8 hunters that year..and obh was saying how hard it was..he came up with a good cheat sheet with teams and a few stranglers could join the contest...he had to have his wife help him with the dutys of the turkey contest....I remember him having trouble if there should be 4 teams of 2 or 2 teams of 3..with the other 2 members would participate and earn extra points for beard length..
43.) Swamp Fox - 03/21/2015
LOL...So far we have 2 teams of 2, with plenty of room for stranglers...

45.) crookedeye - 03/21/2015

48.) Deerminator - 03/21/2015
The season doesn't open until May For me . I'm in.
Mid 40's one day and low 20's the next. normal weather for here.
49.) Swamp Fox - 03/21/2015
Hunter sent me a pic on my phone of a gang of gobblers standing in a sand road in strut...Plus a bunch of hens I suppose, but I can't blow up pics on that phone to see for sure....It's what we call a passel of turkeys, though, in any event...LOL
50.) Swamp Fox - 03/21/2015
its always fun messing around with these kids.. cracking jokes about them .then there gone...I guess we always got billy to crack jokes about..
I saw that elk post...

Billy was signed on just before I got on just now...We need to get him interested in turkeys so he doesn't have to live vicariously through us...
51.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015
he has that new cabela's chair that he got for 59 bucks...only billy can get the deals....
52.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015
you no them old bones need a good chair... when billy hunt's turkeys he needs to be in a blind with the cabelas swivel seat,...
53.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015
I swear if I hear again about the cabelas swivel seat!!!
54.) Swamp Fox - 03/22/2015
LOL...

That and Floyd's smoker....:wink
55.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015
if floyd post another him and his smoker thread.and billy recommends it...i'm going to puke...:grin:lol...
56.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015
Floyd and his smoked chicken....I mean how hard is it to smoke a chicken??
57.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015
lol..... I only kid...
58.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015
....
59.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015
swampy you never did post the rules and the point system..beard length , spur length, and what was that thing Jb always wanted measured?? beek length..

shotgun vs bow kills... how are we suppose to no who wins this thing? this needs to be fair...its not everyday you become hunting country turkey contest winner..
60.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015
you just cant ask for contestants and not explain the rules....
61.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015
I remember that time I ask Floyd for his brine recipe for a chicken....you would of thought I ask for his combination for his life savings..he wouldn't give it up....he kept changing the subject....

lol.
62.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015
obh he had it going on... the only thing I didn't like that year is when I shot that bearded hen with a 4 inch beard.. and obh seem to deduct points from me...everyone knows that's like killing a 190 inch buck and I should have been the 2012 turkey contest winner...
63.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015
I think I was the 2009 2010..and the 2008 and 2007 deer and turkey chimpanzee...
64.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015
....
65.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015

66.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015
back in the day the turkey contest ment something... bullzi was cool back then..he would show off his arms..plus smoke some meat...and tell us about the sds..
67.) billy b - 03/22/2015
Did I tell you about my swivel stainless steel smoker?????
68.) Swamp Fox - 03/22/2015

LOL...I was gonna do that in one of the early posts, but then this thread took off, and I figured WTH, I'll do it when it's too late for anyone to back out. :wink

The tricky part is getting the measurement pictures when you're by yourself, but I have yet to come up with a solution for that. Otherwise, I think the rules will be the same as last year. Bonus 10 points for a bow kill, which I'd prefer to limit to vertical bows, but we've never discussed that. I like the idea of doing a beak measurement...It's so...JB, LOL. But I think we'll leave that alone, along with weight. :-)

I am tempted to add weight measurements this year to offset the big advantage that long spurs give you in the scoring, but all that does is give an advantage to farm boys who've had mild winters. It's not a real indication of anything other than that you have fat turkeys. Plus, you have to have a scale handy and I think that's not always reasonable.

I'm open to suggestions on the rules.

What I really want to know, though, is where's OHBH?
69.) Swamp Fox - 03/22/2015

70.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015
I always liked when the true turkey contestants would show pics of there bird with a Stanley tape measurerer being official about the birds beard length and the measurement of the spurs..

it wouldn't count if you didn't have a spur measurement..
71.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015
its like you were cheating if you didn't have a Stanley tape measure while turkey hunting...
72.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015
who was that guy that actually measured the birds beard length and spurs???that was obh...wasn't it?

it looked like he had a brand new stanely tape ... see that's why obh was so good at this..he didn't play around..
73.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015
16th of a inch or a 1/8th could mean the difference of a champion..thats why measurements are so critical in the turkey contest..and that's why I recommend Stanley tape measurers.. there the most accurate tape measure...
74.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015
the 2014 contest came down to a matter of a 16th of a inch.. I think the blue team won it that year...
75.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015
i think Kenny won it that year...
76.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015
this forum isn't the same without Kenny..i was reading on another forum he shot a mountain lion...that guys a hunting fool..
77.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015
alex i think you should let him back...the guy sat in a blind all day long for antelope and didn't see chit!! he's one of the true hunters..

can you imagine that all day in a blind? with his camera man...
78.) Swamp Fox - 03/22/2015

I think Kenny could out hunt bullzi in a one on one turkey free for all..
80.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015
its funny how these guys need to fight..not in my "life" have I ever not ment a guy and been so hateful towards him or been influence by others to be hateful towards that person..
81.) crookedeye - 03/22/2015
like obh when he did the 2013 turkey contest...he let the contest get to him.. all the hunters,, different states. the stress he had to be going through to put on the turkey contest.. I could tell the teams being picked by him took years on his life..

its not easy being the turkey contest leader
82.) Swamp Fox - 03/22/2015
Hey...This is a happy place. Leave it alone. Aren't you the one who says, "It is what it is..."?

:dh:
83.) DropzOfWild - 03/22/2015
I'm in! April 20th to May 5th I think
84.) Deerminator - 03/23/2015
A turkey recipe should accompany the specs.
85.) Swamp Fox - 03/23/2015
That's not a bad idea, LOL. I usually stir fry, If I have a tender bird I'll sometimes try breaded strips in the frying pan. I think breast meat is too good to put in a stew or chili, but I know some people do it. :p I could use some new ideas that I don't have to go looking too hard for, is what I'm sayin'.
86.) Deerminator - 03/23/2015
Well there ya go. :tu:

A recipe must accompany the kill data.:hb:,

soup is great for less tender cuts
87.) Swamp Fox - 03/23/2015

Write out a recipe (or the basics) or post a link ASAP when you report your bird. Tie goes to the entry with a recipe, in the event someone fails to comply. :wink

I'm leaning toward drawing teams this Friday at 5 PM eastern (though I may be on the road at that time) so get in on the contest by signing up on this thread before then. You must be signed up before the kill for a turkey to be eligible for entry.

So far, our playas are:

Crookedeye
Bluecat
Hunter
Deerminator
Dropz
Swampy

Swat me if I missed anyone.
88.) DropzOfWild - 03/23/2015
6 man team! we all win
89.) Swamp Fox - 03/23/2015
LOL...

Where's DP and his Participation Trophy when we need it?

Comedian Brad Stine does a bit about kids who grew up watching Barney, where everyone's a winner, versus kids who grew up watching Captain Kangaroo, where if you lost at a game or got an answer wrong you got ping pong balls dropped on your head to shame you, LOL. Obviously, he thinks the Captain Kangaroo generation is tougher. I can't disagree, LOL

He says Barney was a big fat soft purple dinosaur with arms too short to even feed himself, while Captain Kangaroo was a military man in a jacket with two big pockets: 'We don't know what was in them, but probably a Glock and some 9mm shells..." LOL
90.) bluecat - 03/23/2015

ArcherXP: Do you want me to put your name in the contest?

To the rest of you knuckleheads:

There are a few others I'm tempted to volunteer as well. :wink You know who you are. :-)

Here are the rules for this year. I'll post them again when we make the team announcement, and we'll start a kill reporting thread soon after, too.

Note the changes in red. If anybody wants to fight about it, I'm available for duels at sunrise, noon and dusk.

1-A picture of you, the bird, and weapon posted to the Kill Reporting Thread within ten days of the kill. Provide the date of the kill, the measurements and the total score for your bird in the Reporting Thread, along with the story (if you'd like). This year, we're also going to post a turkey recipe or cooking tip along with or ASAP after the kill report. You can write out a full recipe, summarize one, provide a cooking tip or post a link to a recipe or cooking tip. In the event of a tie regarding bird measurements, the contestant or team with the most recipes/tips will be declared the winner. You do not need to kill a bird to post a recipe or tip, so a hunter who skunks can still help his team by placing in the contest this way.

2-A picture of the beard (still attached to the bird, DO NOT CUT OFF BEARD) and tape measure or ruler should show the length. Show entire length of beard and tape measure, including the tip. Measurement is to the end of the longest strand.

3-A picture of each spur and a tape measure showing the length. Spurs must still be attached to the legs. Measurement is along the outside centerline, so with spurs that have any curve to them, you'll need a flexible tape.

Scoring:
Scores will be determined by spur length x 10 plus beard length x 2. A vertical bow kill earns 10 bonus points. Providing weight is optional and will not count toward your score.

For instance:
Beard is 8.5" = 8.5x2=17 pts.
Spurs 1" & 1-1/8" = 2.125 total spur length x 10 = 21.25 pts.
Vertical Bow Kill Bonus Points: Plus 10

So: 17 + 21.25 = 38.25 pts. total for a gun or crossbow kill. A vertical bow kill would add 10 points for a total score of 48.25.

All kills to be scored to the nearest 1/8th inch.

Only 1 bird may be entered per contestant. If you take a bigger bird after you have entered one already, you may upgrade to the better bird. When you upgrade it will cancel out the previous entry. You must be registered for the contest prior to the date of your kill. You cannot kill a bird and enter it for a teammate.

Each member's bird will count toward the team's total points.

In the past, in the event of a tie, we said we'd match the teams' top bird, second bird, third bird, etc. until we had a higher score for one team. Instead of that, we're going to use the recipe/cooking tip thing described above as the tie-breaker. This eliminates the possibility that one slightly bigger bird in one team slot creates a victory over a more successful team effort on the other side (e.g., one bird from Team A beating two or three from Team B). In the event the recipe tie-breaker method does not result in a winner, the original top bird method will be the final deciding factor.

LOL...

If that's a crack on the recipe thing, that's Deerminator's idea :wink. Not that it's a bad one, LOL. I just fleshed it out, Lol.

I'm also thinking about giving out an award for Best-Dressed Turkey Hunter, with bonus points if you can show that you can fold a tinfoil doggy bag of wild game or country cooking into the shape of a swan.

103.) toxophilite - 03/25/2015
ok, I'm in ,can't start here till may but there are plenty of birds around including some big toms :tu: of course I have to rebuild my blinds before the opener, this past winter destroyed both of them either by sheer weight of the snow or the tree that fell on one :td:
104.) Swamp Fox - 03/25/2015
Post some pics of them before and after, LOL. I always like to look at how people set up blinds and stands. :-)
105.) Swamp Fox - 03/26/2015
So far we have:

Toxophilite
Crookedeye
Bluecat

Let's get at least two more guys in on this before 5PM Eastern 3/27 so I don't have to volunteer people who might not want to be volunteered, LOL. Somebody wake OHBH up...Give a call or text to some of the old gang.

Let's get ready to rumble!

Oh, Ok...sign me on; although I'm convinced getting into these contests seems to jinx my efforts. I guess I need to just quit being superstitious. :bk:
107.) Swamp Fox - 03/26/2015
Look at it this way, WB: You'll be jinxed just like the rest of us, so that makes it even. :-)

To the rest of you: What's this lying around $#!+? Do it for Delta House!

It's always good to be skeptical around here, LOL. I'll put you down as a hesitant yes. :wink
114.) Swamp Fox - 03/27/2015
This is turning out to be near-record participation, LOL. Keep it up, people. Quit playing games on your phones and make a few calls/send some texts. Harass your former friends and current frenemies and shame them into joining the contest.

They don't have to post if it's against their religion these days :re::wink, but this is like eating your vegetables: you really should do it. You know you should.

If I'm in the Bronco at 5, I'll post teams asap after the wheels stop rolling.

129.) Swamp Fox - 03/30/2015
Final answer?

I am scouting turkeys? Saw two males this morning with about six hens? I could see one beard with naked eye from at least 70 yards? He either has a Bruce Jenner thing going on or his running buddy was doing the gobbling? It sounded pretty weak?

144.) bluecat - 04/02/2015
Maybe just a picture of the bird and Swampy's shadow would be best.
145.) bluecat - 04/02/2015
Otherwise it might look a frame from Appalachian Outlaws.
146.) bluecat - 04/02/2015

147.) Swamp Fox - 04/02/2015
LOL, boys...

Weeds are too tall, huh? :bang::wink:-)
148.) bluecat - 04/02/2015
Well there was weed involved. Let's just stop there.
149.) crookedeye - 04/02/2015
no snow this year..i sat one spot where the weeds where beat down last year and they seemed to like it..this year is thick...I kinda no where there at..i need to get there in the morning and sit all day...I don't no if I can do that with the walley spawn right around the corner..
150.) crookedeye - 04/02/2015
my pics at least have a shadow in it..

I like to keep a low profile.. just in case...
151.) crookedeye - 04/02/2015
i'm sure swampy is going through his pics right now.. he's thinking which one should I show the guys???
152.) Swamp Fox - 04/02/2015
I'm having a fit creating files and with photobucket. There has to be a better way than PB...It's slow as dust and harder to navigate every time I go there.

But I did somehow manage to lose my own photo file...after zapping yesterday's hunt story yesterday...so maybe it's a little bit my fault...:wink... The story is gone but the photos are located...I'll re-do the story when I have time...Today's hunt story I'll get to tomorrow I hope...Just pics in the meantime.
153.) crookedeye - 04/02/2015
you have more trouble with pics then anyone I no... but who cares just tell us what you got...
154.) crookedeye - 04/02/2015

swampy youre going to have to give us a more detailed hunt ..like what calls did you use. I bet it was the hoosier daddy call...what time of day was it.
158.) crookedeye - 04/03/2015
bluecat you do no the deadliest catch season starts 4 14 15..this year...i'm already getting stressed out just thinking about it..

youre in the middle of the ocean and a wave comes crashing against the bowel of the boat...I mean who cares..no chit... that happens when youre in the middle of the ocean in a freakin boat..
159.) Swamp Fox - 04/04/2015
He/they gobbled on the roost and just a little when he/they hit the ground. Otherwise it's been pretty quiet around here. For this hunt, I switched to a Primos Batty glass (old call) since I used a slate the day before and a Primos box since I used a Heart of Dixie previous. Mouth call both days was a MAD cutter.

Killed him at 8:40.
160.) crookedeye - 04/04/2015
nice going..
161.) Swamp Fox - 04/04/2015
I thought so...

I knew an old coot who I'd see when I'd come out of the woods...He always asked me what I'd used... I thought he was just being friendly, LOL...Took me a while to figure out he was going in after me and using something different and killing my birds. :tap:

RIP, Sarge, you old bastard LOL

What are turkeys doing at the end of the Ohio season, say the last week or so?
171.) Ohbuckhunter - 04/09/2015
Hard to tell this year. Birds are struttin and talking allot right now. Season still 2 weeks away.
172.) Swamp Fox - 04/09/2015
I meant in general...Do they tend to be done with mating, are they doing a lot of gobbling, is it dead as a bag of hammers? Hit and miss? ...Etc...
173.) Ohbuckhunter - 04/09/2015
Hit or miss depends on the day and weather. I've called them in last day on several times. And been times where I couldn't hear a bird the last 2 weeks of season.
174.) Swamp Fox - 04/09/2015
Good to know.

Mid-May is most often good hunting here. Usually lots of gobbling and gobblers looking for love.
175.) Swamp Fox - 04/13/2015
This just in:

I neglected to put an end date on the turkey contest, I think. We'll go out to May 31 unless there are some objections.

Also, if there's a demand, I'll put more people in the contest if they request it in the sign-up thread, which can be found here:

http://forums.huntingcountry.com/forums/showthread.php?1615-Official-2015-Turkey-Contest-Sign-Up-Thread

You must be signed up for the contest before the kill. Otherwise, I can't count your gobbler for competition.

well turkey opened here in new york may first, been out with my bow for a week now, the activity is pretty good but haven't been able to get a tom to come into bow range. i have till the 31st to tag one and plan to hunt everyday ( i'm retired and live in some prime hunting territory) so all i have to do is put on the camo's and head out the door and up the hill behind the house. :tu:
