1.) Swamp Fox - 04/02/2015
Please post your score ASAP after posting your pics. I'll give a running tally by team as appropriate.

To score, you must post a picture of you, your bird and your weapon, plus pictures of the spur and beard measurements. Give us the date, the measurement and the total score. You can tell the story of your hunt here or elsewhere, but everything else must be here in this thread for your kill to count toward the contest.
2.) Swamp Fox - 04/02/2015

Maybe I'll try to recreate the scene in the next few days...I'll tell the story anyway.

Short version: No dekes. Close to the intersection of two farm roads (well, a road and a path) separating some wheat and a fallow field that had been in cotton last year. They've been feeding in the cotton field, spending ALL morning in it.

These were birds I worked yesterday on four different sets...Funny story but it'll have to wait...and I first spotted them Monday while scouting. Two gobblers and seven hens. This morning they were way more vocal than the last two times. Shot him gobbling to his hens who were leading him on a string...

I called just enough to let them know I was there while on the roost and then wherever they went at flydown, and then waited til they appeared...Tree calls, clucks, lost yelping, mating yelps...Not much of anything...Just right...LOL...

Kinda a mystery why they took the path they did today but I had all my options covered from watching them previously. At least one hen was ultra curious the last two days...could have been his downfall.
16.) crookedeye - 04/03/2015
I bet youre good at the lost yelping calls...?
17.) crookedeye - 04/03/2015
youre a soldier for getting up in the morning like that ...camped out in the sticks with a bottle of rum..
18.) crookedeye - 04/03/2015
when i'm with buddys we stay up until 2 am... we wake up by geese calling and turkeys gobbling and ducks quaking...I keep telling them how am I suppose to sleep with all this rackit going on...
19.) Swamp Fox - 04/03/2015
I bet youre good at the lost yelping calls...?
Why yes, yes I am?
youre a soldier for getting up in the morning like that ...camped out in the sticks with a bottle of rum..
LOL...

I have to pace myself...:wink

It's no fun at 7:30 in the morning when nothing's gobbling and your stomach is empty but your bloodstream is mid-grade...Makes you wanna go find a biscuit somewhere...LOL
20.) crookedeye - 04/03/2015
the older I get I find it harder and harder to get up in the morning in a tent...the first morning it was like 23 degrees..if I stuck my head out of the sleeping bag I would freeze...that's why I kinda like going by myself ...I actually get up and go hunting in the morning...with my buddys we sit by the fire drinking all night which I cant complain about...
21.) billy b - 04/03/2015
Nice work Swampy, I give, you win.:wink
22.) crookedeye - 04/03/2015
how are we suppose to compete with that?? we might as well not even try now....is that a world record turkey??Jb would no...
23.) crookedeye - 04/03/2015
I seen where les straud the surviverman had a new series on finding bigfoot..he used wood knocks, apples, and a ham sandwich to try and get a bigfoot to responed.. I have more respect for him now than ever..

who's laughing at moneymaker now?? the guy knows what he's doing..

Just so you know this up front, I sleep naked and have been known to sleep walk while singing sea shanties.
25.) bluecat - 04/03/2015
I have to admit the staging area is pretty impressive. It looks like base camp for the final assault on Everest, except there wasn't any oxygen bottles or dead bodies (that I can see).
26.) bluecat - 04/03/2015
The guys are right. How are we supposed to compete with you? You are like a turkey whisperer except you murder them after befriending them.
27.) bluecat - 04/03/2015

Les Stroud is a genius. The ham sandwich is way better than Bobo singing by a fire with girl scouts. At least when bigfoot doesn't show you've got a free sandwich.

swampy doesn't survive out there....he thrives out there...
30.) bluecat - 04/03/2015
His camp looks like Woodstock after the final day. Mud, booze, broken down vehicles, stuff strewn everywhere, naked under age girls running for cover.
31.) crookedeye - 04/03/2015
lol..
32.) bluecat - 04/03/2015
Swampy is asleep now and can't defend himself. All that pioneering really takes a lot out of him. He should be in around noon-o-clock.
33.) crookedeye - 04/03/2015
I bet he really lit into that bottle of rum last night...

hopefully he post some pics of breaded turkey straps..

60.) Swamp Fox - 04/26/2015
Well, actually there is...I just haven't done the math on my score yet, LOL.

But if Hunter's not making up stories again, he might take the lead...He has 1/8-inch on me on the spurs, but I have a half-inch on the beard...But spurs get you a lot in this contest...More than beards...It might hurt me to do the calculations...I don't no yet...
61.) Swamp Fox - 04/26/2015
It could come down to who posts a recipe...LOL
62.) crookedeye - 04/26/2015

Nice pic, Ted! Likin the camo and the shotgun.

I'll assume you're not shortchanging yourself on the beard's longest strand.

I'll post the scores for "everyone" as soon as I can, LOL.
70.) Hunter - 04/26/2015
wanted to hunt this morning but heavy rain ruined that plan. So I headed out this afternoon about 5pm. It was hot, humid and buggy! Set up in a small draw with a hen decoy. It is a tight setup but I wanted to try and video the hunt. Focused my camera on the decoy and settled in. Called a little for about 20 minutes with seemingly no results. Then, I heard the distinct sound of drumming and wing dragging. Turkeys coming down the road from behind me but they are not making a sound! I flipped on the camera and leveled the gun on my knee. Two Toms moved in but didn't like something and eased off just out of range. They looked like pretty big birds from what I could see. So, back to calling... little while later heard one gobble about 100 yards out. Again, I flipped on camera and got ready. This time a gobbler eased in from my left and surveyed the scene. Looked like a two-year old to me and it would have been about a 50 yard shot so I passed on him. Again, back to calling........ hearing a few gobbles seemingly getting closer. Then, again I hear drumming and strutting coming from behind me. Turn on the camera and get ready. This time a single bird struts in on my decoy. He takes his time moving in and I have to bide my time until he lifts his head. Finally he starts to break strut and I bowl him over. Not an giant bird by any means, but it was an exciting hunt.

had to take pictures of beard and spurs by myself so angles are bad. I scored them as close as I could.

:tu:

What are considered "long" spurs and beards there, and above-average weights?
73.) crookedeye - 04/26/2015
I don't think that pic is real..besides I don't think hunter owns a pair of leafy wear..where going to have to leave this up to the turkey establishment..we might have to dedcuct and cancel the turkey contest..

by the way hunter.. nice bird...:tu:
74.) crookedeye - 04/26/2015
hunter how did you ever find land in texas? I heard it was all bought by oil companys dang liberals down there...how do you like it compared to florida??
:tu:

We have a lot of mature birds this year. 4yo's probably average 1.25 in spurs w/ 10-10.5in beards.
78.) Hunter - 04/27/2015
My video kill............ let me be the first to say that the producer of this video should be fired! Barely got the gobbler in the frame and my props are hideous. But, what can you expect from an old fart :bang:

(at the beginning, you can hear him strutting before he comes into the picture)

Poults haven't been surviving the last several springs too well (cold/wet after hatching)...It's been a problem...I'm hoping this spring turns around from what it's been so far.
80.) Hunter - 04/27/2015
We should have a terrific hatch this year as it has been a really wet spring!
81.) Swamp Fox - 04/27/2015
"Suddenly, the gobbler appeared from the left..."

LOL...Good job, Ted!...I love how they glide in sometimes...Like they're wearing ballet shoes...Not that I'd know anything about that...:tap::-)

83.) luv2bowhunt - 04/28/2015
Congrats to Swampy and Ted! Our season starts this Sat. but I'll probably be working through most of the season. Stupid dumb crumbling highways.......:td:
84.) bluecat - 04/28/2015
How do the roads gets so torn up with those little horse-drawn buggys?
85.) Swamp Fox - 04/28/2015
LOL...I took a detour into Pennslynania once to go to Cabelas, and I actually think I had the intention that, if there was time, I'd see if I could find Luv2's town as well and scare him for lunch.

Well, I don't think my timing was too good and/or I took a wrong turn somewhere and/or there was too much traffic and/or I got on some dinky local road instead of a bypass, which took forever. Bottom line: I missed Luv2's town altogether, and it was nowhere near lunch.

However, I do remember enjoying the people-watching and people-listening at Cabelas, and all the orange cones and potholes on one leg of the journey. I thought NC was the home of orange traffic barrels, and I thought SC had some pretty bad roads (especially if you don't like weird traffic junctures or standing water) but man, I'l tell you, that Pa. trip was a trip. You'd need a new front end alignment every time you drove through there.

This was seven or eight years ago on whatever roads you would or could take from Cabelas down towards Luv2 Country if your aim was to eventually slip back into Virginia for the scenic route south.
86.) bluecat - 04/28/2015
Well no wonder he is so grumpy, that's a lot of shovel leaners to scream at!
87.) bluecat - 04/28/2015
I spent a week one night in Harrisburg...
88.) bluecat - 04/28/2015
Pennsylvania: "The Detour State"
89.) Swamp Fox - 04/28/2015
LOL...

It was a HELL of a detour, but you only live once. Now that we have a Cabelas about an hour from me, I may never see Pennsylvania again, which I'm sure is a relief to Pennsylvanians. :-)

Although they DO turkey hunt to the end of May...:wink  :wink
90.) luv2bowhunt - 04/28/2015
I know you're lying now. There is no back road that gets you anywhere near Cabela's and back south again. If you came up I-81 or Rte. 15, you were near my house. If for some unknown reason you had temp. insanity and came up I-95, then you were way off.
91.) Swamp Fox - 04/28/2015
LOL...I came from north (?) and east to Cabelas on some major highway and then tried to get down to your area afterwards. Hwy 15 rings a bell, maybe because I'm all over Highway 15's around here. Not sure I ever found it, though. Don't ask me why. Construction detour or something, maybe.

And I didn't say "back road" I said "local road." While I was crawling through the Harrisburg and Gettysburg areas (the way I recall it) the road seemed pretty local to me, LOL. :p
92.) Swamp Fox - 04/28/2015
Yeah, now that I think about it, roads around Harrisburg were under construction big time and I was looking for a road that was supposed to take me south that looked like it was supposed to be right there (maybe that was 15). I think I missed it or was forced around it too far to hit some other connection...Who knows...

When I regained consciousness, I was driving past a vast selection--really, I had my pick-- of souvenir stands specializing in Confederate keychains and Union T-shirts. This was Gettysburg, apparently, LOL, or the outskirts. Again, not a back road but probably not what I wanted to be on if I'd already missed Luv2ville and was now thinking of just calling the whole trip a near-total disaster, LOL...
93.) Wild Bob - 04/29/2015
Luv2: You need to get out there and go hunting; we all know you're not yourself when you haven't been hunting for a while!
94.) Swamp Fox - 04/29/2015

Point of order:

We have two turkeys in the contest, not counting the contestants. Hunter has the leading gobbler by a skoosh, as Bullz-i would say.

So we're twice as good at hunting than Archerytalk thinks we are, LOL...And no one can touch us for music videos...

109.) crookedeye - 05/10/2015
that's right.. I forgot about hunters bird..wasn't he the 2013 superbowl pick the winning points winner and more than likely the 2015 turkey contest winner?? the guy just doesn't get appreciated enough for his accomplishments..he always seems to get the win..
110.) crookedeye - 05/10/2015
swampy are you going to do the 2015 deer contest this year??? i'm already getting excited about it...
111.) Swamp Fox - 05/10/2015
Hell, yeah! I live for keeping the important traditions of this site alive against all odds...Like giving Luv2 a lot of grief, talking trash about other famous members and extra-big trash about famous members who aren't here to defend themselves....And, for the few who are interested, running contests strictly for bragging rights that no one ever brags about. LOL

It's what I dreamed about from when I was a small child...
112.) Swamp Fox - 05/10/2015
What we all need to do is get DParker to come back to the site so we can have the best deer contest spreadsheet on the internet.

You all don't want me trying to figure out how to post a spreadsheet...

I know I don't.

:wink
113.) crookedeye - 05/10/2015
he did have a good spreed sheet didn't he?? you don't see a spreed sheet like that over at archerytalk..do you...

luv 2 would get eatin alive over at archerytalk...
114.) Swamp Fox - 05/10/2015
LOL...

I'd pay to see Luv2 on ArcheryTalk for one day...A week would be even better, LOL...He might get bloody, but those puddies wouldn't know what hit them, either...
115.) Swamp Fox - 05/10/2015
Sorry for the typo...LOL...I've lost the ability to edit all of a sudden...:wink
116.) crookedeye - 05/10/2015
I actually seen the drury brothers over there...
117.) crookedeye - 05/10/2015
they actually said why anyone in there right mind would hang a trail camera up in a tree..

I mean I didn't say it ..the drury brothers did..

I think it was one of those questions and answering sessions over there... where the public could learn different stradgies from the pros...
118.) Swamp Fox - 05/10/2015
Have you ever been on there when a female who's not certifiably fugly posts? Or somebody who sells treestand drink holders?

119.) Deerminator - 05/11/2015
haven't been over there in like--12 years

On second thought, let's not go there, it is a silly place.
121.) Swamp Fox - 05/11/2015
LOL...

Speaking of Monty Python, it seems that most times I play a video on Youtube lately, it wants to play the next one in line automatically, instead of just sitting dormant until I pick something else, the way it used to.

Did I inadvertently change a setting, or has Youtube done something new that I can reverse? Or have I just gotten lucky and played only videos that are strung together inseverably with other videos for the last month or so?
122.) Deerminator - 05/11/2015
that's the way they do it now. Wish they would stop changing things.
123.) bluecat - 05/11/2015
I've noticed that too. It can be annoying if you want to maintain that video to play later. It continues to load 'em up. If you changed a setting then I must have too. LOL!
124.) bluecat - 05/11/2015
Was sitting in the blind on Saturday. Every weekend when I can hunt it's generally raining cats and dogs. But Saturday I went out during a break in thunderstorms. It's been 3 hours and I'm sitting there trying not to fall asleep - reviewing a few knots, plotting my next project and I look out and there are two jakes standing in my decoys. Never gobbled, clucked, squawked...nothing. I didn't have my release on and couldn't find it quickly. Arrow was not nocked. Pants were down. I can't catch a break.

Hey guys, give me a little heads up next time will ya?

I have to go back and see what my setting for displaying or not displaying the screen shots for other videos at the end of one I play is too, now. They've changed that around without asking me, as well. Twice now, maybe!

The ads are a lot more intrusive and annoying than they used to be, too. :bang: Especially the ones you can't skip after 5 seconds. :td:

Next you'll be telling us you like to text when you're out in the great outdoors, getting away from it all, being the ultimate predator. :re::bang::wink:-)
127.) bluecat - 05/11/2015
Nope, I hate that with a passion. I would rather listen to different birds and try to recognize and categorize them. Besides, there was a lot of ticks I had to pick off.
128.) bluecat - 05/11/2015
I need to start an entire broadhead sharpening thread soon. That will surely bring some of the hard-core hunters back...
129.) Swamp Fox - 05/11/2015
Reason I say that is I can't tell you how many stories I've heard about people missing deer approach because they had their noses buried in their phones.

Now when I hear, "And all of a sudden, there was the deer!" I always ask, "You weren't texting, were you?" LOL

You might not be surprised how often the answer is a sheepish "Well, yeah."

Most of these stories end up in the deer's favor, LOL.
130.) bluecat - 05/11/2015
Yeah, it was my fault. I had an obstructed view out the right side window as I put the blind up against a big tree. I wasn't paying attention for sure. It's hard to be on high alert every second.

The places I hunt don't even have cell phone coverage so I'm good there. But I get what you are saying. Why take all that crap to the woods. with you. Get out and immerse yourself in the woods. The one guilty pleasure that keeps me occupied sometimes when it is slow is my knot book. Best money I ever spent.

Remember, Crookedeye only comes around on the weekends these days...I suspect he might have a girlfriend, or maybe he's just riding his bike around the lake a lot. :wink
132.) bluecat - 05/11/2015
I know he is fighting the millipedes pretty regularly in his basement this time of year too. If he doesn't get on them, they can establish a stronghold. It can be dangerous. He always tries to take out the dominant leader.

Or an apricot wine thread. Either way...
134.) Swamp Fox - 05/11/2015
I'm about 50% on carrying the phone for emergencies. Sometimes I have it and sometimes I don't. I don't get out of the truck and think, "I need to make sure I have my phone." A few years ago I consciously refused to carry it, but then I figured I'd look pretty stupid crawling through the woods after an accident when I could have been choppered out, except for being stubborn and standing on principle. LOL

(By the way, it's the season when they're plucking dumbass kayakers out of the river at taxpayer expense around here...Something about a raging torrent they can't seem to resist getting into, even though few of them have ever done it before, LOL. I've seen an article or two here and there about how a lot of people today feel entitled to a rescue team just because they can reach one on their phones or with an emergency signal beacon--Don't know if you've ever seen one of those devices. The idea of self-rescue or even getting your own self out of a mildly bad spot seems to have gone out the window for many weekend warriors.)

But I digress. The phones I have with me most often in the woods are ruggedized flip phones, so they're a PITA to text on anyway, so that keeps the temptation level down, if it ever comes up. LOL...Some people take offense when I ask them not to text me, though, or put them off till I'm out of the woods/off the water.

You can't please everyone, I guess, LOL. Gotta know who the serial texting maniacs are among your friends, and work around them, :wink

LMAO....

I forgot about that...It's been a constant struggle as long as I've known him...:wink

And that's a long time, now, LOL.

He needs to keep his excitement level monitored. I would imagine if he watched Dream Season with the Drury Bros while with his girlfriend he could flatline.

Entitlement seems to be rampant everywhere. All the flood plain dwellers who refuse the warnings demand to be airlifted out too. Too funny.
139.) Swamp Fox - 05/11/2015
I have to figure out if Dino was also trying to pick up chicks by riding his bike around the lake...Seems like maybe it was both of them, but Crookedeye had the more souped-up bike...I could be wrong about that...BillyB might remember...I know Dino was a big fan of the laundromat, though. And he thought my idea of the Post Office around Christmastime was pretty good, too.

140.) bluecat - 05/11/2015
Those are all good ideas. The supermarket is also good in that you can come up with an innocent ice-breaker.

"Excuse me, I was wondering if you could help me out? Do you know if these taste good sauted?"

As you get older however, you care less and less about tact. "Hey, wanna go out in my van for a few?"
141.) Swamp Fox - 05/11/2015
I've thought about getting a pizza deliveryman uniform and a handlebar mustache and knocking on some doors, too...

I don't think I could pull off a plumber's outfit...Pun(s) intended...:wink
142.) bluecat - 05/11/2015
Get a puppy for an afternoon. It needs to be small enough that you can carry it around with you. Now go shopping or just walk along a target rich environment. You're golden.

If they ask about it, you can say you are babysitting for your sister. Now you're a dog lover and a considerate brother. You're a sensitive new age guy and you have done nothing but carry a puppy around.
145.) Swamp Fox - 05/11/2015
"I'm glad you feel you can trust me. More tequila?"

ROTFLMAO!....That's the caption of an old cartoon in Playboy that I'll probably never forget...The guy in aviator sunglasses with a cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth is having a picnic in the park on a beautiful spring day with a sweet young thing, a basket, a blanket and a bottle.... What could go wrong? LOL
146.) bluecat - 05/11/2015
Hey and if you set the puppy down while you are standing, they generally squat down to pet it...
147.) Swamp Fox - 05/11/2015
Are we still talking about the puppy?

You seem to have put a lot of thought into this.
