Hate to say it but the best buck on trail cam so far is a yearling with points so short, they probably won't count!

You'll find a nice one eventually. The areas I hunt here never seem to show any nice bucks prior to the season, then once things cool off and the deer start moving around - they start showing up.
8.) Triton Rich - 08/27/2015
Yeah there are generally a few bucks that move through during the rut that are strangers but usually by now we have a few pics of some decent resident bucks. The numbers stėll seem to be down from the EHD outbreak a couple years ago too. You're right though. Once they start running around more, we'll have a better idea of what's around.
9.) Wild Bob - 08/27/2015
Ah, EHD sucks for sure. Sorry to hear your area got hit with it.

We've taken a beating here from it too, not to mention several bad winters and two years of bad flooding. Its been tough on the whitetails in my area.
10.) Swamp Fox - 08/28/2015
Virginia has taken the step of prohibiting the use of natural deer lures, including but not limited to deer pee, starting this year.

I think it's an over-reaction, but I bet it's not the last state to do it..

They say they will evaluate it over time, and they also admit there is no evidence that deer pee etc. aids the spread of CWD, but they're going ahead anyway....When I heard that, my thought was how boneheaded it is to ban something based on no evidence, and then say you'll study the issue further and reverse yourself when there IS evidence to back THAT position up.

I understand the idea of erring on the side of caution, but erring on the side of zero evidence?

Edited brain fart.
11.) Hunter - 08/28/2015
What does deer pee have to do with EHD?
12.) Swamp Fox - 08/28/2015
Nothing...But they're concerned about CWD...I should have said so...Fingers were working faster than my brain.
13.) Triton Rich - 08/28/2015
CWD, EHD. Difficult to keep up lately! They've been culling pretty heavily in our area too so you might say that EHD did us a favor by speeding up the process! I agree with banning baiting in CWD areas. As far as I know, they still don't know how it is transmitted but it has something to do with close contact which a pile of bait would encourage. Banning the use of lures is pure stupidity though! A typical reaction of a deer to deer urine is to sniff, pee on it and move on.

My season is looking very promising

as does TOXO's season cuz we hunt some of the same territory. The only thing we have to start looking out for are ticks.

GOOD LUCK GUYS:tu:

Sulphur sock dusted on boots & lower pant legs.
16.) Swamp Fox - 09/03/2015
This is the best thing I've found for ticks....Kills em dead on contact, does not leave a detectable odor on your clothes and will last a couple of washes. I've been using it for years.

Not sure if I've done sulfur before...If I did it was a long time ago. I do remember using Sevin dust somewhere along the line...That might have been for a dog rather than for me and ticks, though.

:tu: Thanks, will try this spring during turkey season.
18.) Swamp Fox - 09/03/2015
I'm surprised more people don't know about it....Same thing for picaridin as a deet substitute.
19.) Swamp Fox - 09/03/2015
Might as well throw this out there while we're on the subject:

I'm not aware of an odorless picaridin potion. If someone comes across one, let me know. This is what I use when I don't use a Thermacell:

awesome:tu: thanks I'm going to get some.

.....one nice buck on trailcam so far.

photo 08230122_zpsljjpxaz0.jpg

I'm really trying to hold out for a P and Y buck and I think he is just short of that but good to see a nice buck on cam anyway. It seems like the population is still pretty low. Not too many deer on cam and we're not seeing any in the fields even driving around at prime time. We'll see how things go when we actually start hunting. They may just not be moving around all that much yet.
22.) billy b - 09/07/2015
Its almost time to see em start nosing around (like crookedeye at the girls high school gym). That's a nice one but I bet you will see better.
23.) crookedeye - 09/07/2015
funny you should say that billy..this summer we did a high school gym roof..every time I went into the gym..you no to check out if debre and whatnots have fallen on to the gym floor. all the cheerleaders and volleyball players would be practicing at the time.it would smell like cotton candy in there..
24.) Swamp Fox - 09/07/2015
I believe it...LOL
