1.) Swamp Fox - 09/08/2015
Post your pictures you want entered in the Small Game/Other contest on this thread. If you post multiple pictures (simultaneously or over time) please give your pictures titles or numbers so we can refer to them easily.

A recap of the highlights for entrants and voters:

This will be a photo contest with winners decided by votes of forum members in the general population. You do not need to be in the contest to vote, but you do need to be in the contest to submit pictures. I will automatically enroll you in the SG/O contest when you sign up for the Whitetail contest. If you would like to be in the SG/O contest but do not plan to hunt whitetails this year, please let me know so I don't put you on a whitetail team that needs all the trigger-pullers it can get.

The SG/O contest will be an individual contest, rather than a team effort (although that may change in the future). The pursuit of any game, predator or varmint other than whitetail deer by any legal hunting OR trapping method qualifies for SG/O status, and any legal weapon or trap may be used. You do not need to kill or take an animal to be able to submit a photo for the contest. The pictures you submit should be related to SG/O hunts you go on this year, but do not need to be taken on the actual hunt. A picture of you sweeping out your hunting camp in August would be okay, for instance. All that is required is that the picture should be at least loosely related to your SG/O efforts this year, and that the picture be taken this year.

There is no limit to the number of pictures you can submit, but multiple submissions should be named or numbered by the entrant to promote easy identification.

There will be six categories for photos:

Scenery
Game or Wildlife Pictures
Hero/Dead Animal Pics
Camp Pictures
Cool Stuff (rifle against a tree, armadillo on its back, abandoned still, old house place, etc.)
Buddy Pictures

You decide what category you want to enter your picture in if it's close. For instance, a picture of your buddy at 4 AM before he's had his morning coffee could be a camp picture or a buddy picture. You pick.

Post the picture(s) on this thread with its/their name(s) or number(s), and state your category(ies) and the details of the photo(s) (date(s), general location(s) and as much background story as you choose to tell). Members can give a picture contest points on this thread by posting that they "like" a picture, or they can send me or the Contest Scorekeeper (Bluecat) a PM if they wish to "like" anonymously.

At the end of the contest we will put all the photos in each category up against one another and have a "Best in Category" vote that will work the same way. I will take the "likes" and the "Best in Category" votes and announce the winner in each of the six categories. BiC votes at the end will be weighted more heavily than "Likes" tallied during the contest, but "Likes" can be used to pick a winner in case there is a lack or absence of final votes.

Lobbying for likes and votes for your photos is allowed, as is recruiting new forum members to join HC and vote for your pics... At least until WB enrolls his son's entire kilted marching band to vote for him, and ruins the good ol' boys club we've got going on here.

Contest dates will run concurrent with the Whitetail contest (Aug. 15-Jan. 15) but pictures can be from any time in 2015 through the end of the contest.

Management reserves the right to tweak the rules as we get this new contest off the ground. If you have comments or suggestions, please start a separate thread, or send me a PM. If my inbox is full, notify me and I'll make room.
2.) Jon - 09/08/2015
This picture was taken in Delaware while cutting trails in June 2015. I almost ran her over. Shot the photo with my cell phone from about a foot away and she never even moved a muscle.
This photo should be in the wildlife category

photo 20150522_191200.jpg
3.) bluecat - 09/08/2015
One of the coolest pics I've ever seen. Great job Jon.
4.) Swamp Fox - 09/08/2015
Okay, we can shut the wildlife category down right now...Jon wins! LOL

That's awesome. I was gonna ask if that was a cell phone pic...great quality.

I can't seem to walk up on a fawn without them jumping up at my feet and scaring the bejeezus out of me, LOL

:tu:

(BTW, all: Positive comments about a pic or a simple positive emoticon such as :tu: count as a "Like"...If you like a pic, "don't just stand there gawping" ...Be sure to mention it. Bluecat and I will be keeping track.)
5.) Hunter - 09/08/2015
Awesome photo, Jon!!
6.) Jon - 09/08/2015
This picture is of the twin of the previous deer, this one stayed "hidden" in the tall grass. Picture was taken in June, 2015 with my cell phone.
Category should be wildlife.

photo 20150522_191148.jpg
7.) Swamp Fox - 09/08/2015
:tu:

Good titles, too, LOL

That should count for something.
8.) bluecat - 09/08/2015
I'm already picking out your special imaginary gift right now!
9.) Wild Bob - 09/09/2015
Nice pics Jon!
10.) Wild Bob - 09/10/2015
So here are some bird hunting pictures: taken in September 2015 while dove hunting along the Milk River Valley in Montana. I suppose the first 3 will be in the ‘Buddy’ category and the last one will be in the 'Cool Stuff' category. Names or titles of the individual pictures are listed above them.

FYI: 1) please, no imaginary gifts :-) and 2) I will not be signing up the Scotties Marching Band to vote for these pictures :-). Thank you.
11.) Swamp Fox - 09/10/2015
"I got your imaginary gift right heah!"

LOL...

I give a thumbs up to each and all of those, especially "Warm Seat" now that it has a title and I looked at it more closely... :applause:
12.) Hunter - 09/11/2015
I'll enter this one in the "dead game" category. I'll stick with my previous caption

"I suck!"

Nice, Ted!

I especially like "Drinks On Me!"
20.) billy b - 09/11/2015
Can I enter this in the 2015 contest, it was taken in 1974?

Official name: Texas death machine. ( not me, the rattler)

21.) Swamp Fox - 09/11/2015
LOL...We just might have to make an exception for that one...
22.) Swamp Fox - 09/11/2015
"Did he rattle at you?"

"Yeah, a little bit."

:wink
23.) billy b - 09/11/2015
He did not rattle till after he struck the wheel on my Herters bow, I never saw him strike but it almost took the bow out of my hand & my OH-S#IT light came on very bright.
24.) Swamp Fox - 09/12/2015
LOL...

That reminds me of a story: :wink

Little Johnny was at school one day when the teacher asked the kids if they could use the word "definitely" properly in a sentence.

Well, the first little girl raised her hand and said, "The trees are definitely green."

The teacher said, "No, not really because the trees turn yellow, red and brown in the fall."

The next little boy raised his hand and said, "The sky is definitely blue."

The teacher said, "No, not really because the sky can be all different colors."

From the back of the room, Little Johnny raised his hand suddenly and yelled, "Do farts have lumps?"

Replied the teacher: "No, Johnny, of course not---that’s silly."

Declared Little Johnny: "Well, then, I definitely just shit my pants!"

25.) bluecat - 09/12/2015
Lol!
26.) Wild Bob - 09/21/2015
Here's some pictures from my weekend elk hunt.

This I call 'Gnarly' and it is in Scenery catagory:
27.) Swamp Fox - 09/21/2015
Dang, WB...Those are all good. Not letting any of those go without a :tu:.

I especially like "Gnarly," "Tailgate Breakfast" and "Little Church on the Prairie."

28.) billy b - 09/21/2015
Great pics WB
29.) bluecat - 09/21/2015
Great Pics :tu:

We are taking inventory of the imaginary gifts right now WB. At this point, it looks like a rubber spider may be coming your way.
30.) Wild Bob - 09/22/2015
Thanks for the feed back guys...I think I'll pass on the rubber spider (imaginary or not...)

Actually...that gives me an idea. Let's kick this little contest up a notch; what do you guys think of this:

I'm sure its safe to say that most, if not all of us have some double items of gear, or some hunting / outdoor related items that we've bought but never but really took a shine to, or a gift we were given that never really was an item we wanted, or something we inherited...you get the idea. (It doesn't need to be anything expensive, just what ever you are willing to part with or pass on... it could be used as long as its not trashed, but it should be a legitimate item; i.e. no off the wall non-outdoor related items).

Each of us participating in the contest could put up one item. Then each winner of a category gets to pick an item from the pool at the close of the contest.

Any takers on this idea? (Come on, make it interesting!)
31.) Swamp Fox - 09/22/2015
You might have something there, WB...If you can line up all the prizes, have a shot at making them desirable and figure out who picks first, etc. Maybe make it a white elephant to add an extra layer of excitement and competition....LOL

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_elephant_gift_exchange

My suggestion: Put Luv2 in charge of it. :wink
Who put Swampy in charge of EVERYTHING??
32.) Wild Bob - 09/22/2015
I'm thinking simple; in other words, if you are part of the contest think of an item you'd be willing to put up. Heck, I'd even be willing to organize and coordinate participation in it.

Again, just real simple. If you are participating you could PM me with your item...then I'd list them all in topic only / sticlky thread (don't want it getting over run with podunk or lost). Once the contest is done, and Swampy counts up and lists the scores; highest scoring catagory gets to pick first. If there is a tie or multiple we just roll a die...this shouldn't turn into a big deal or an argument, lets just keep it fun and simple.

Some sugestions could be:
An outdoor/hunting related book
A game call you got that you've never used
A bottle of lure (full...or very close; not half empty :re:)
A hat that you were given that you never used
A pair of gloves (obviously not wore out)
A batch of outdoor magazines
A hunting video (Especially the Drury Brothers...this one is for you Luv2 :-) ) only kidding!
A camping gear item (small in size... we don't want any to have to bust the bank shipping it)
A fishing reel
A few fishing lures (2 or 3, within reason...not a whole batch)
Butt-out tool (not used! :td: )

You get the idea. What say everyone game or no?
33.) Swamp Fox - 09/22/2015
I like it, but...
...this shouldn't turn into a big deal or an argument...
Have you ever been here before? LOL :wink

I could put up a few things. I still like the idea of a white elephant and/or mystery prizes, but if you want to herd the cats on this one, you get to design the game. :-)

I'd still like to see Luv2 do it, though...:wink
34.) luv2bowhunt - 09/22/2015
Just so we're all on the same page, I'm not doing jack with anything on here.

I just came to grill Bob about his pictures.

1) What's in the igloo cooler? That's a lot of drink, were you planning on running a marathon during the hunt?
2) It looks like you brought plastic ware but still had real silverware. Why not have all plastic ware or all silverware?
3) I see a rock up on the cooler, what kind of rock is that? We have plenty of limestone and sandstone here, heck we even run into a fair amount of ironstone, but I'm not familiar with that kind of rock.
4) Why a red solo cup? Why not blue or go with the economy no name brand?
5) Where is the parking lot for the church?
6) How far would they have to go to do a real baptism service? I'm not talking about a Presbyterian sprinkling but a good old fashioned Baptist dunking.
7) Why is there a bungee cord on the church door?

That's the questions I had at a quick glance, there will be many more after I've had time to study the pics and take volumes of notes.
35.) Swamp Fox - 09/22/2015

I was wondering some of those same things...:wink
36.) bluecat - 09/22/2015

37.) Swamp Fox - 09/22/2015
Looking forward to Wild Bob's answers...:p

OK... I'll play.

1) Elk hunting in the Breaks is a marathon of sorts (no joke there, you can ask my wife - I typically loose 5-8 lbs every time I go hunting out there). Those hills/coulees in the pictures are deceiving...hike up and down a few and you'll see what I mean! Lastly, there are no good sources of water to get drinking water from naturally there (very dry, semi arid region - average rainfall in that area is only 12" annually).

2) I'm a silverware slut...I use 'em all. :-)

3) That 'rock' is my frame pack for packing meat...its grey in color and in the low light; I guess it could be mistaken for a rock.

4) Why Red solo cup ask you...because everyone knows, "Red solo cup, red solo cup, I fill you up, let's have a party!"

5) Church parking lot: it’s all around; built in 1916 most folks attending that church drove horse and wagons or rode horses. (Remember, this is still in the middle of nowhere now, 99 years later.)

6) Come on now Luv2...did you not look at the picture closely? It's a good Lutheran Church...us Lutherans don't do no stinking dunking; a bowl of Holy Water suffices. :-)

7) Bungee cord...I have no earthly idea why that is on there.

Cripes...you guys wear me out. :bad:
40.) Wild Bob - 09/22/2015
"Have you ever been here before?" LOL - Swampy

You bring up a valid point... :-)
7) Why is there a bungee cord on the church door?

7) Bungee cord...I have no earthly idea why that is on there.
Doors open to the inside, and these have a defective latch which causes them not to click together solidly. Bungie cord is to prevent the doors from blowing open to let the prairie in.

On Sundays, the pastor pays a little boy a dollar to stand outside until everyone is safely in the pews, then shut the doors, bungie them, and run around to the side, where the boy climbs on an old milk crate and climbs in the window. Only then can the ride begin.

The congregation has offered to take up a collection to fix the doors, but the minister prefers a captive audience---though he would never say so out loud.

At first glance I thought that was a guy in camo sitting by a pile of rocks with binoculars. :-)
I wonder where the church bell went?
They prolly took out the bell because every year it leans just a little bit more. I'm standing in the grave yard to take this pic.

59.) Swamp Fox - 09/24/2015
LOL...That makes sense now.

I'm dying to take some pics of an entire cotton gin town that looks like that since the railroad was diverted and the gin closed way back...The same could go for some textile mills...But I never seem to get around to it.

Next question: Who bothered to put the newish tin roof on that church if they were going to let it go to aitchee double-toothpicks like that?...LOL
60.) billy b - 09/25/2015
I don't know that Chris, it was like that when we got that lease in 1995, but the steeple wasn't leaning then. That pic is about 5 or 6 years old, it leans a little even more now.
61.) Swamp Fox - 09/25/2015
Well, the roof looks good, anyway. That rules out Crookedeye's involvement...LOL

I'll chime in again if I have any more questions....:wink

62.) luv2bowhunt - 09/25/2015
Come on Chris, you're getting rained out today. You should have plenty of time for more picture critiquing.

I came to bump up this thread and see I missed that last pic by WB.

I'll give that a :tu:.

Contest period is winding down, boys!

Post 'em if you got 'em!

:-)
86.) Swamp Fox - 01/11/2016
Voting ends on the 15th. Give a verbal or graphic :tu: to pictures you want to vote for...Make sure you mention the name of the picture or post a copy of it when you vote.

If you especially like a photo, you can give it multiple :tu:s

The judges may use some discretion in declaring a winner, but your votes are definite guidelines--- You're not doing anyone any good keeping them in your pocket!
This picture was taken in Delaware while cutting trails in June 2015. I almost ran her over. Shot the photo with my cell phone from about a foot away and she never even moved a muscle.
This photo should be in the wildlife category

Today is the last day to cast votes (or to submit pictures), boys and girls.

If anyone wants to be on the judging committee with me or double-check my vote tally for accuracy, shoot me a PM. This may not be your opportunity to wield supreme executive power, but it may be the closest you'll ever get, and your chances are higher than waiting for some watery tart to throw a sword at you, for sure.

Just because some aquatic bimbo lobs a metallic object in my general direction...
90.) Swamp Fox - 01/16/2016
Winning a photo contest is no basis for a system of government, but then again, look what happened in 2008...So maybe it wouldn't be so bad...

Before we begin, there were no entries in the Hero/Dead Animals division, and none in the Camp category, either. These would be two areas for the forum's photographers to work on this year for the next contest. :wink

Here are the Winners in each category which received entries. Send your complaints to Alex@bowcountry.com...
