1.) Bob Peck - 01/21/2016
will be closed forever as we experience snow falling uncontrollably from the sky.

Normally, 1" is all that's required to turn Virginia into an Arctic version of The Walking Dead so with a few feet on the way it's likely I'll never hear from most of you ever again. All Virginia schools are closed tomorrow and not a single flake has flown.

I've got snowshoes, awesome winter gear, plenty of propane, deer meat, MRE's, canned jars of spicy pickled green beans from the garden and several cans of spam for back up but it's the ammo I'm worried about. I only have a few thousand rounds. I've already boarded up the windows, sawed open some gun ports and placed a perimeter of pikes around the house but nothing will stop the hillbillies. Nothing.

Thanks for all the laughs. So many regrets ... I never got to hunt with Luv2 ... never got to tell Swamploogie how much I hate his guts or ask WildBob if there are any legitimate hills where he lives or find out if Billy shot a good buck on his latest hunting adventure or ask BlueCat if he owns one or just spray painted one ... pray for me boys!

Have you stockpiled tactical bacon? No self-respecting TEOTWAWKI prepper would be without several cases of tactical bacon in his basem....er...I mean....bunker.

3.) Swamp Fox - 01/21/2016
If I had stashed some tactical bacon, I believe I'd stay quiet about it....:wink

If we don't hear from you by the spring melt...we'll worry.

Only illegitimate hills here Bob...but if you get back in contact with HC soon; I'll post a picture for you from the highest hill in my area for you to see. (And by the way, you'll love the local name of that hill...but I’m not going to reveal the name right now…that’s something for you to ponder while you are shivering and trying to survive being snow bound.)

Be safe! :tu:

(You are so easily offended these days Swampy...)
6.) Swamp Fox - 01/21/2016
LOL...

"Hill Like Mountain" ?

Give me some time... I might think of some others. :wink

They've upgraded us now into the 12"-18" zone of death.

What is it with the bread anyway? Who during a storm has a sudden urge for a large helping of French toast? A loaf of bread would last me a month. Grocery stores have been out of bread here for 3 days.

Alas poor Bob, I remember him Alex; a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy..........no bluecat, not that kind of fancy..............

I think it has to do with making sandwiches when the power goes out. I don't usually prepare down to that level, though. Certainly not down to the tactical bacon level. I figure if your Coleman stove and charcoal can't save you from eating bread because you have to, not because you want to---most likely because you have no charcoal and don't know what a Coleman stove is-- we're talking two different perspectives on preparedness.

I did forget to buy more coffee yesterday, so if I seem irritable somewhere around Sunday morning, you'll know what happened. Also, I noticed meat seemed to be flying off the shelves yesterday.

My guess? That's either plans for lots of snow parties (get 'em in while we still have electricity!) or a fear that no one will be mobile even by Saturday supper...
13.) Wild Bob - 01/22/2016
Man, you gotta get your priorities straight!

1) Beer
2) Coffee
3) Brats
4) Other meat
5) More meat
6) Bread

15.) Bob Peck - 01/22/2016
We're getting killed up here in Virginny. Halp!

I'm down to 2 bottles of excellent tequila, 4 liter bottles of cheap wine, a case of Newcastle and dry rub ribs in the smoker. At this rate I'll be unconscious soon and waking up to the playoffs on Sunday if my generator, ammo and liquor holds out.
16.) Swamp Fox - 01/22/2016
Pro Tip:

At some point, you're wasting good tequila and good beer. Say, somewhere between two and four drinks...This is where you switch to cheap alcohol. You're already in the zone, and taste matters less.

So if any neighbors are dumb enough to still be driving around, call for back-up: You need something between PBR but no better than Budweiser. Tell him to make an executive decision if his only choices are Miller Lite or Natural Lite, because when it comes to lite beer, it's not about self-respect anymore anyway.

But for godsake, man, don't waste the good stuff!

Maybe Crookedeye has more information.....We can only hope...:wink
17.) luv2bowhunt - 01/22/2016
I always have charcoal to cook with in an emergency. I'll be damned if I'm eating sandwiches if the power goes out. Freezer full of meat and a grill is all I need.

Wife stocked up on wine, so she'll be good....................and ready.....................if the power goes out.:tu:

Life is good here in PA.

There's no use in my living too long. :wink

I'm not completely out. And I have some decaf in case of the apocalypse. And I can reuse the grounds.

I'm just saying I'm counting on getting out again no later (but possibly no sooner) than Sunday mid-day, and I might have accidentally cut it a little close. :wink

OMG! OMG! OMG! I've made a critical mistake in my survival plan! I have only top shelf liquor and beer. No PBR, no Natty Lite, no Miller Lite. Yes, yes, yes ... need to pace ... need to ration.

I've never had an aversion to snakes, spider, other bugs, etc...but centipedes creep me the hell out, and make me want to scream like a little girl. I don't think a round of #6 shot is overboard for one. Anything that can eat its way out from the inside of a snake must be an alien creature from the deepest level of hell, and needs to be terminated with extreme prejudice.

Still snowing ... no idea how much is on the ground but it allegedly won't stop until midnight. Booze holding up with rationing, jerky came out great from the smoker, plenty of firewood and meat.

I just may make it but I'm going to take a nap first to think it over.

69.) Bob Peck - 01/24/2016
bob???..."O crap"
Sorry CE. I was digging out. Ended up with 32" of snow.

The short answer to your question is thickness depends on:

-how long (if) you've marinated the meat
-your preference on hard or slightly chewy
-type of meat
-variety of meats in the smoker

For 24+ hr marinated venison, only thing in the smoker @ 165 degrees I slice 1/8" thick. Check it every 30 minutes flipping to release it from the rack and get both sides smoked. Usually takes less than 3 hrs.

My son prefers ultra thin and no chewiness. I marinade for 48 hours in the fridge and semi-freeze it so the meat is easier to slice paper thin. At same temp in the smoker (165) the jerky is done in half the time.

thats alot of snow.. i made about 4lbs on the dehydrator yesterday took all morning and into the evening..had to do 2 batches at about 4 hrs a piece..man it turned out good. i screwed up on the recipe , bought the hi mountain mix and mixed like if you would use burger to marinate..anyhow after reading the directions properly i thought there might not be enough seasoning on the meat so i bought a small bottle of soy sauce and dumped half of it into both bags and let them soak over night..it turned out great!

i'm just looking for another way to do it, like in my smoker..i got a masterbuilt.. it was built by a master.and alot better than billys:grin:..thanks for the tip..
71.) Wild Bob - 01/24/2016
Glad to hear you guys are surviving! :tu:

Here's a real kick in the pants...I just spoke to my nephew; he lives 2 hours north of NYC and he informed me that they didn't get a lick of snow! He was kind of bummed...he has a small snow removal business and the Weather Service kept predicting 5-8" for them...
i made about 4lbs on the dehydrator yesterday took all morning and into the evening..had to do 2 batches at about 4 hrs a piece..man it turned out good. i screwed up on the recipe
If you can get your hands on Moore's Marinade I mix 2 bottles with 1 bottle liquid smoke and marinade for 24 hrs. in the fridge. When I put them in the dehydrator I lightly sprinkle a little garlic powder and fresh crushed black pepper.

Like you, my dehydrator takes 5-7 hours which is no big deal with a timer but you don't get that natural smoke you get with the smoker.

This is nearby from mid-day Friday, before "things got bad" LOL...Nobody hurt.

We had a beautiful bluebird day yesterday with some melting. Everything refroze overnight, of course. Very slick out there right now as melting continues today. I'll try to get out later this afternoon. We'll see. I'm in a spot where you have the perfect bad combination of some sun but mostly shade, and no work gets done on the road for about 1/2-3/4 of a mile. It's common to be stuck here at least a day longer than most others.

Schools are closed, I'd say the majority of the businesses too, unless they're near a main road and semi-vital, and employees can get in.
77.) Wild Bob - 01/25/2016
Ever notice how the flipped over vehicles or the vehicles in ditches (when winter weather hits an area that normally doesn't get bad weather) often seem to be the 4 wheel drive rigs??? :re:

When I lived in TN and I'd travel Briley Parkway (pretty much ever day) and bad weather would hit; 90% of the crashed vehicles along that road would be 4 wheel drive. Seems like a safety hazard to me: I think the Federal Government should require there to be a statement in owner's manual along the lines of, "Just because your new vehicle is 4 wheel drive; it doesn't mean you know how to operate it in inclement weather dumb
ass." :-)

Wait...better yet! Let us treat this hazard like gun control; make everyone have to get a permit to show they know how to drive, then make them register their death machines, and lastly, control what they can own or not own.

Hmmmmmm, I guess they kind of already do that don't they??? :wink
78.) Wild Bob - 01/25/2016

You do wish you had a beer when you see all the stuff you just drove past spinning before your eyes through the front windshield again unexpectedly, LOL. Hills with two-way traffic are a hoot, too.

Speaking of cats, I saw Little Miss Bullseye on the roof a half hour ago, clinging to the one little bare patch of shingling near the chimney that she could hold on to. I checked on her just now, and unless she's hiding on the far side now, she got down, which is good, because it was between that, staying there all night, or waiting a few hours and shooting off there like the luge when everything refreezes.

BTW, Little Miss Bulllseye: No relation; she just has tabby bullseyes on her sides. I know: Bummer of a birthmark. :wink)

Swampy, I was thinking maybe the next grayish stray you take in ought to be named bluecat.

It would have to be super intelligent though.

Once upon a time, I was young and single and had a roommate who had a male cat. One evening we were drinking beer and watching the tube when the cat plopped down in front of the TV and started licking his privates. The roomie asked me, "Don't you wish you could do that?" Of course I immediately responded, "No" in my most incredulous voice, to which he casually retorted...
"Yeah, he'd probably bite you anyway."
It took me 20 years to pull that same line on someone else. And then it just sounded creepy coming from a 45 year-old. Timing really is everything.

LOL...Thanks for the tip.

There's an interesting story that goes with your comment, but it might only be interesting to me...:wink

That's classic! I love it.

You are right; timing is everything, I agree with you (as I've learned). :p

My oldest son still likes to remind me that I scarred him for life when he asked me not too long ago if I was an organ donor. The conversation was spurred on by the fact that he will be getting his driver's license soon. I replied to him that I am indeed an organ donor and that I donate my organ to his mother every night...I thought it was funny as hell...him, not so much.

So...how much are you shelling out now for his therapist? :wink

Ah, he's 15...I'm certain that he hears worse at school. (He just wouldn't admit that to me!)

That's where I get sent for my timeouts. Hence the well trodden path.

I'd hyperventilate before making it 3 feet.
100.) luv2bowhunt - 01/28/2016
For my dog it was claustrophobia. He refused to walk down the sidewalk and in his paths for about 20 minutes until he warmed up to the idea. He wasn't used to not being able to see anything but walls of snow.

That was dangerously close to "junk"...I'm just sayin'.
103.) bluecat - 01/29/2016
Dodged a bullet on that one. We would have had to change our screen resolution just to see what the heck he sent.
104.) DParker - 01/29/2016
Plus I generally don't keep enough eye bleach on hand for that sort of thing.

You people are slipping. It took four hours for someone to take a swing at that high, hanging meatball...
