Speaking of rabbits and squirrels:

If anyone knows of someone with dogs and/or good land who would be willing to be hired out on occassion for rabbit hunting, please let me know. I don't care where in the U.S. it is, and they don't need to be professional outfitters. Just competent, and not horrible human beings.

Second, I'm trying to get a comprehensive list together of early or late squirrel seasons, including summer seasons. If your state has one outside of the period Oct.1 - March 1, say, please let me know.

Hey Swampy, have you ever hunted squirrels with a bow? They are legal here during bow season but I'm thinking that would get VERY expensive!
15.) Swamp Fox - 03/24/2013
I have not. I've watched some videos of it on youtube. Of course, they all use flu-flu arrows...Usually, they're sponsored by an arrow company as well, LOL.

To tell the truth, after deer season is over I am so burned out on the bow that I really want to get out there with the .22. I enjoy shooting rifles, A LOT. I try to do some hog hunting in the cold, wet months of late winter and even that is a debate that I have with myself: Do I really want to carry a bow when I haven't hunted with a CF rifle in so long? If I make more than a couple of outings after hogs before turkey comes in, I'll probably wind up 60/40 rifle to bow.

I've done it. Well, to be honest...I wasn't actually hunting squirrels. I was in a blind waiting for deer and a few unfortunate squirrels wandered in front of me after I'd been there a while and had gotten a little bored. And a couple of times I've shot squirrels after spotting them while walking out of the woods after once again coming up snake eyes on deer.

That's why I always keep one of my cheaper arrows with a Zwickey Judo head in the quiver. In fact, this was one of my earliest threads back on BC...

17.) crookedeye - 03/24/2013
did you eat it???
18.) crookedeye - 03/24/2013
dont tell me you threw it in the trash can...
19.) crookedeye - 03/24/2013
i'm one of those guys that if you shoot somthing ..you better eat it..
20.) crookedeye - 03/24/2013
i bet you kicked it aside???
21.) Swamp Fox - 03/24/2013
I think I remember that thread!

How sad is that?...
22.) DParker - 03/24/2013
did you eat it???
Of course. My cardinal rule is that I don't kill anything while hunting ('cept for possible self-defense) unless I'm going to cook it. Besides, squirrel is tastey. Hell, I once used my shotgun to blow the head off a cotton mouth that had gotten itself permanently hung up on some barbed wire that was (for some unknown reason) wrapped around the base of a tree. It was going to die a slow, agonizing death...and there was no way I could release it safely...so I took pity on it and ended things quickly. I even ate that (the snake, not the barbed wire).
I think I remember that thread!

Terribly. It looks like we both need to get out of the house more often.
23.) Swamp Fox - 03/24/2013
I know it's coming, so consider this a preemptive strike

Squirrel here opens Aug. 1 every year, runs thru Feb. And you can come up here and hunt them and rabbit's anytime you want, but bring your own dog - mine is an idiot, and won't "run" anything but a straight line back to the house...
25.) Swamp Fox - 03/24/2013
LOL...

Thanks, Joe!

I'm betting you have air conditioning, cool water and plentiful food back at the house. Maybe you're dog is smarter than you're giving him credit for. :wink

Her. And no, she lives outside, in a 30' x 30' kennel with the other dog.

She really is just an idiot. My girl children are infatuated with her though, so she at least serves some purpose.

I cannot believe people would cook beans with prairie dogs .
