1.) Swamp Fox - 02/17/2016
This is an open thread for you to ask the forum any question you want...Since the rest of the forum's pretty slow, I figured it might be best if we just lumped all the questions in here...Less clicking and surfing that way...

Against my better judgment, I will let "Ask The Experts" remain the title, although I had immediate second thoughts...

I'll go first:

If I want to save a video directly to my computer --Let's say from youtube or embedded in a forum thread--but can't locate "properties" (as in right click yields no result other than "copy embed code" or "copy url", etc) is the best way to get it on my machine to save it to Photobucket (or similar) and then hope there is a way to get it over? Can I even do that without "properties"?

I have the same general question about photos or gifs or videos from Facebook or Twitter. You apparently can't grab "properties." How do you then capture that item for your own use?
2.) Swamp Fox - 02/17/2016
Next question (really two):

How come they sell eight-penny nails by the pound?

Do they think they're still going to be in business a year from now selling 150 of them for $3?
3.) Swamp Fox - 02/17/2016
Oh, and then after all that I want to know if somebody can teach me how to 1) get a screen grab and 2) grab a still picture from a video (let's say on youtube or embedded somewhere).
Oh, and then after all that I want to know if somebody can teach me how to 1) get a screen grab and 2) grab a still picture from a video (let's say on youtube or embedded somewhere).

:dig:
I'll start with this one. To do a screen capture all you need to do is press Print Screen. Although the name is a little misleading, back in the DOS days it would actually print a paper copy of what was on the screen at the time. I used to use that to print directory contents. Anyhoo (see what I did there), once you have pressed Print Screen, your screen image is now in memory (i.e. whatever is on your computer screen). Open up another program, such as MS Paint or another graphics program, or even Word, and then Press Ctrl V (You are pasting that image in memory to another program). Once you have the image in another program you can edit it (crop, tint etc.) and save it as a bone fide graphics image with an extension such as .bmp, jpg, png, gif, etc.

Another really cool way to do it, is to use a snipping tool. This works with a static screen. i.e. Not a good choice for video. Go to Start|All Programs|Accessories|Snipping Tool. Once that program is opened you can trace around anything you want saved. Very handy. Once it is snipped (captured) you can then begin the process of saving it the way you want (edit, crop etc.). Hope that helps. This would also be what you would want to do for Question 1. Think of it as a screen print but you get to choose the area you want saved initially.

All the best,

bluecat

PS, if you press Alt + Print Screen only the window that has the focus will be committed to memory. That is a big help most times.
7.) bluecat - 02/17/2016
Not sure you can put a posted video on your own computer. Not without maybe some software that would copy it while playing maybe. I dunno.

Remember a video is like 1000`s of static images playing sequentially on your computer. It's a little more complicated than to just grab some properties and expect that video to show up on your hard drive.
8.) Wild Bob - 02/17/2016
There's only one expert around here and we all know who thinks he thinks he is.
9.) Swamp Fox - 02/17/2016
Huh. I'll try that when when I get a second. I used to use print screen all the time when I wanted a hard copy of something, but it has never worked on my last two or three laptops. Is that a matter of a change in the function of the button, or some miscommunication between the laptop and the printer?

I've saved one or two videos to my machine somehow. At least I think I have, LOL. I'd like to avoid Vimeo or Photobucket if I could, just because photobucket seems like a bit of a hassle these days ---But if I ever did get the video to my own computer, they would be a good backup.

Thanks for the help.

So, ladies, these questions remain:

How can you get video from youtube, say, to be stored at either of those two sites? What about video embedded elsewhere?

When a video or still image doesn't offer "properties" when you right click on it, is there any way to obtain it and put it or store it somewhere?

How do you grab a still from a video (youtube or embedded) once you have some type of control of it? If video editing software is required, any particular recommendatons?

I believe the button function has changed. It is not a miscommunication error.

Remember video is like thousands of still images. Just grabbing a property is not the same as copying all those bits and bytes to your machine. You are only grabbing a reference to the object (big 'ol pile of bytes) that is on some Photobucket server.

To grab a still from a video, you could press Print Screen and hope you get the image you want. If you need to move frame by frame to get the image you want you would have to have video editing software AND the video itself which you don't have.

One way to verify you have a video which you believe you have saved to your hard drive, you could disconnect your computer from the internet and attempt to play the video. If it plays, you know the origin of the bytes resides on your machine and not in some distant universe.
13.) bluecat - 02/17/2016
Also, understand what the word embedded means. When we embed videos here on this site so others can simply press play and not have to follow a link, we are embedding (or hosting) the environment for that video. The bytes still reside on another server (e.g. you tube server) somewhere. We are just making it easier for the user to press play and watch. Embedding doesn't mean we have possession of the bytes to that video.
14.) bluecat - 02/17/2016
Do you remember when the misleading commercial came out about the real tough guy that used his Buck Folding hunter knife to start a fire? In the video he was striking the brass bolster on the side of his knife to a rock to produce sparks. There was some question as to whether he was actually striking the brass part of the knife. I was able to gather a few stills from the video proving him doing that. I played the video and then used Print Screen to capture the frame I needed to make my point. It was trial and error until I was able to get the still I wanted. The video was on a server somewhere and I was at the mercy of trying to capture a screen shot as it flashed in front of my eyes.

If I had had the video and editing software I could have stepped frame by frame to get the image I wanted. But there is no way the video could be on my computer unless the author made it available for download and I downloaded it.

We're all self-professed experts at something. For me, it's the Print Screen button...
27.) Swamp Fox - 02/17/2016
LOL...That's why I started the thread.

By the way, I just looked up the blue footed booby. The color isn't limited to males, it seems fairly "built-in", but the brightness level is a function of dietary health and has a role in breeding mate selection. Anchovies, mackerel and one other fish which I've forgotten already contribute to the blue.

So that's my good deed for the day.
28.) Swamp Fox - 03/03/2016
Okay, since I'm the only one around here who has any questions  Next one--

I've finally gotten aggravated enough with Internet Explorer that I set Firefox as my default browser a few days ago. I am running Windows 7 on this laptop I'm on right now, and it was freezing frequently, pages were slow to load and close, the scroll would lock up, I'd get pop-ups saying IE had stopped working blah blah blah. Numerous Geek Squad tune-ups didn't fix the problem.

A few questions off the top of my head:

Does any of my IE explorer problem sound like it could be a problem with my internet provider, TWC?

Should I use a browser other than Firefox?

Is there a way to easily get my Favorites from years of browsing on IE to show as favorites on Firefox, or some other browser? A small number of favorites files seem to be on Firefox already. Maybe I manually created them the last time I briefly used Firefox? if so, I don't remember doing it.

Both when I used IE and now with Firefox, I am getting pop-ups about long-running scripts or some other message re. scripts describing a problem. I'll have to write down what the latest messages actually say since switching to Firefox. I'm blanking right now.) I assume this is an indication of some of the problem? What's the fix for this? I think I've been good about keeping my computer updated when prompted.

I'm sure I'll think of something else in a bit....LOL
29.) bluecat - 03/03/2016
Internet Explorer locks up on me and all my coworkers ALL the time. I wouldn't get out the hammer just yet. It ain't you babe.

Microsoft is more concerned about getting the next version out than writing something that actually is stable.

Save a favorite or bookmark in firefox and browse Explorer to find out where it stuck those little entries. When you find it, you might be able to move all the IE favorites into that folder for Firefox to read them. I don't know for sure but it's worth a shot.

When I get a moment I'll see if it works. I'm up the creek in alligators today.
30.) DParker - 03/03/2016
I haven't used IE for a long time now, having moved to Chrome quite a while ago, so I have no idea what its current crop of stability quirks are. I also don't use Firefox, but I suspect bluecat is on the right track there with regard to copying your IE favorites to most other browsers.

Speaking of browsers/web pages...is the BC site currently acting buggy for anyone else? I find that a lot of buttons/links won't do anything when I click on them if they're on the bottom half of the screen. If I scroll so that they're on the upper half then they respond. Bizarre.
31.) bluecat - 03/03/2016
Swampy, I fired up Firefox and lo and behold you can import your bookmarks from IE.

Bookmarks Menu on the top of your screen|Show All Bookmarks|Import and Backup|Import Data From another Browser

When you click All Bookmarks it brings up a Library dialog which has the backup feature as a menu item.

Hope that helps.

I'll monitor the BC site for the quirks you mentioned DP.
32.) DParker - 03/03/2016
I'll monitor the BC site for the quirks you mentioned DP.
Thanks, but after further experimentation the problem appears to be with Windows/my PC in general. It looks like its time for my semi-weekly reboot.
33.) Swamp Fox - 03/04/2016
Thanks fellas. I'll play with the bookmark thingy over the weekend.

Is there a reason I should use Chrome (or something else) rather than Firefox, though, before I get too far along? Speaking of Google, have browsers gotten a lot better at tracking you than they used to be? I get banner ads all the time now when it seems like a year or two ago, I didn't. Isn't Google and/or Chrome notorious for this? Is there an easy fix to cut down on this? I don't want ads for every single thing I research, LOL...

Also, anybody have a fix for my long-running scripts problem, or whatever it is?
34.) bluecat - 03/04/2016
Use whatever you like. I actually like IE because it is most intuitive. Problem is, it isn't written very well and doesn't render pictures sometimes. A real PITA. I use Chrome the most, but Firefox is good too.

I think browsers have taken it to a whole new level in terms of tracking. Not sure what to do about this. I just let all the lingerie ads display...
35.) Swamp Fox - 03/04/2016
There's been a small improvement in browsing with Firefox but still some glitches and freezes I wasn't expecting. I do think it's a little clunkier to use compared to IE.

A while back I briefly looked for ad-blocking downloads or software but didn't learn anything. Maybe I didn't look in the right places, or hard enough. I think there is something out there...(?)

The other thing I'm considering is ditching TWC and using DTV for internet. It just seems like TWC drops my wireless connection to the TV a lot, and may run slow on the computer.

Also, every once in a while something can't keep up with my typing. I'm not the fastest, but you should see some of what I turn out when this happens (this morning for example). Words run together, spaces lost, letters dropped or transposed....Is that an operating system problem or computer running slow? it doesn't have anything to do with my internet connection, does it?

Freakin' computers....
36.) bluecat - 03/04/2016
That sounds like computer memory issues--i.e. memory is not sufficient. Don't know how new your computer is so this may not be relevant, but having plenty of RAM memory is the cheapest and most effective thing you can do to make your computer experience positive. You generally can upgrade memory on your existing computer.

I was working on a laptop recently and every time my wrist touched that stupid touch pad near the bottom, the cursor would jump to another location on the page. I finally was able to turn off the touch pad entirely. I generally use a plug-in mouse even on a laptop. Don't know if that relates to your situation but I thought I would mention it.
37.) Swamp Fox - 03/04/2016
I'll have to look at RAM on this machine but I would think I'm okay normally. I didn't have a lot of stuff open or running earlier this morning when I was having this problem, but I did close everything and restarted the computer and the problem seems to have disappeared for now.

I can understand being under-gunned with my little 10 year-old netbook, but even though this laptop I'm on now is several years old, I don't want to believe that it is becoming a rubber knife as well...:re:
38.) bluecat - 03/04/2016
It can be hard to diagnose problems. If your laptop is only a couple years old, you are most likely okay. Do check your RAM though. I think you can do a right-click on My Computer|Properties to see what RAM you have on board.

A slow connection is also frustrating. Think of all this as links in a chain. If any one link is lacking everything suffers.
39.) Swamp Fox - 03/04/2016
It's 4 GB (3.8 usable) which was more than adequate at the time I bought it. I do have a bad habit of sometimes leaving a bunch of websites and documents open, and I probably should reboot more frequently. I try to keep the number of things running in the background to a minimum but that's mostly by accident. I'm not sure I don't have stuff going on that I really don't need, LOL.
40.) bluecat - 03/04/2016
That should be plenty of RAM, but then again those porn sites really eat up a lot of your onboard memory. :wink
41.) Swamp Fox - 03/04/2016
Is there a reason I should use Chrome (or something else) rather than Firefox, though, before I get too far along?
Well, when Google become self-aware and morphs into SkyNet being a Chrome user might prompt the machines to spare you for work as a mine slave rather than simply vaporizing you on sight. At least that's what I'm banking on.

I approach that issue from the other end and suppress the ads by installing AdBlock (free Chrome plug-in). It works wonders, and the internet is a whole different experience with it.

That's the gizmo I was thinking of! No wonder I couldn't find it.

Yep. Just type "adblock" and "firefox" (or "internet explorer") into your favorite web search engine and see what sounds good. Since AdBlock on Chrome is the only one I've used you might want to try reading some of the reviews/comparisons that will show up in your search result list before trying any of the plug-ins.
46.) Swamp Fox - 03/05/2016
From the little bit of reading I've done so far, Firefox uses a product called AdBlock Plus, which came before AdBlock, believe it or not.

I don't think I've identified any unique, gotta-have or disqualifying features yet, but have noticed a couple of commenters have said it slows their computers.

Any thoughts?

Also, there was something about it being phased out (for FireFox) eventually. I supposed I can jump off that bridge when I come to it.
47.) Swamp Fox - 04/04/2016
Okay, now an automotive question...

For something completely different.

On a Bronco whose transmission I had rebuilt last year, the transfer case adapter has cracked (according to the transmission shop) and that, I think, has also caused the transfer case housing to crack. All I've seen is the externals, meaning the five-or-six-inch crack in the housing. The shop that showed me the crack immediately sent me to the transmission shop when they learned I had had the transmission rebuilt 8 months ago.

Now, I know the transfer case isn't technically a part of the transmission, but the transmission shop says they'll fix it on the basis of what sounds like is a favor ("No problem; Not a big deal") when I asked if it was covered under the 2-year warranty. (This is Mike's Transmissions, by the way, which I don't think is just in NC).

So three questions:

Why would they do me a favor on something that's not under warranty (other than I'm a good guy/dumbass and gave them two transmissions to rebuild last year, which cost me a lot of hunting and fishing, and which I'm still paying for)?

Is there likely something in the transmission rebuild or noteworthy in the course of having the truck up on the lift originally that should have been conveyed to me, that would make them feel guilty about the original work and want to make it up to me? (Bad mounts, u-joints, something loose or out of balance, etc.)

The rear drive shaft had to be replaced under warranty about a year ago, and I'm sure some work could be done back there (i.e., "old age")...So take those as clues...But---third question: Is there anything specific I should have checked to keep this from happening again, and to double check behind mechanics who might be waiting for something to break before discovering problems?
48.) billy b - 04/04/2016
Did you ever notice a drive line vibration before or after the tranny rebuilds ?
49.) Swamp Fox - 04/04/2016
The short answer is yes before, and no after---until I did, and pulled it into a shop within 30 miles, by which time whatever was making the noise and vibration had quieted down/disintegrated/been ejected onto the highway behind me, or whatever.:bang:

On this Bronco last year, I had vibration, lots of noise within a certain speed/rpm range and then the drive shaft fell out on my way back from the shop the day they diagnosed I needed a new drive shaft and would order me one, LOL.

The drive shaft was replaced under warranty (I'd forgotten I'd replaced it once already) and then everything seemed okay except I'd occasionally get a "clunk" in the rear when putting it in reverse. "It's age and wear" I was told, and not something I had to worry about right away (if at all) . The transmission shop had asked me if I knew things were loose back there when I picked it up from the rebuild a couple of/several thousand miles later (u-joint?, or where the drive shaft terminates at the rear?--I don't recall/understand the details.) thus my question to my regular mechanic, who gave me that nonchalant reply.

I've driven probably less than 1000 miles since the rebuild, which was last August or so. I got significant noise and vibration and pulled it into a shop that happened to be on my way home from a several-hundred mile trip at the end of last month. They showed me the cracked housing and even though they said they could fix it themselves, they sent me to the transmission place when they heard about the rebuild.
50.) Swamp Fox - 04/04/2016
By the way, the transmission just died all of a sudden, and I was under the impression it was a completely separate issue from everything else. I went bone-dry on fluid on a trip, "out of the blue" apparently. I limped 30 miles home, and then to my regular mechanic and back before having it towed to the transmission shop.
51.) DParker - 04/04/2016
I think I found the problem.

Freakin' youtube...

:bang:
54.) billy b - 04/04/2016
I bet it had a slight crack when they o/hauled the tranny, since then vibration worsened it but they didn't catch it. If they will fix it let them, they should have caught it from the beginning.
55.) Swamp Fox - 04/04/2016
Assuming the adapter cracked (as the transmission shop says) and not just the housing, would that have been something they would have seen during the rebuild?

Would/could a crack in the adapter or the housing have been the source of my original sudden tranny fluid leak that occurred when I first had a problem? I don't know how everything interacts, so forgive me if that's a dumb question.

Is something that's out of whack still today likely to have caused the crack(s) and is there anything I should have checked to make sure this doesn't happen again? My anxiety is that when I fix the transfer case, the underlying problem goes unaddressed until midnight or 4 in the morning some day out in the middle of nowhere...LOL
56.) DParker - 04/05/2016
I bet it had a slight crack when they o/hauled the tranny...
57.) Swamp Fox - 04/05/2016
LOL!

Two points for that...at least. :wink
58.) billy b - 04/05/2016
Vibration likely caused the crack, something inside caused the vibration, if they o/hauled the tranny there should not have been a vibration. They owe you a repair in my opinion.
59.) Swamp Fox - 04/05/2016
Thanks, Billy. I appreciate the help.

I'll be interested to see if they try to charge me for anything, like the tow. When I called them about the crack, they jumped to send a truck out, even though I was in the neighborhood of 30 miles away.

FWIW, sometimes on older model trannies, the Johnson rod needs to be removed otherwise it can create friction in the ball bearings.

Okay, next topic:

One of my laptop keyboards is jumping all over the place when I type. It's happening in word processing as well as on the internet (search bars, websites, forms, etc.)

The machine just had a a new hard drive installed and I figure it might be some setting is off, or I have a virus already (?). I could not find a way to turn the touchpad off while typing, but I don't think I'm brushing it anyway. The problem persists even after I've downloaded a program that is supposed to turn off the touchpad on Windows 7 machines, and I assume the program is operating.

The laptop in question is an older Dell Inspiron.

Possible causes? I don't want to have to have tie this machine up with Geek Squad right now if I don't have to.
74.) bluecat - 04/06/2017
I had the same problem and I was inadvertantly brushing the stupid touch pad as I typed. You can shut that off and return to sanity...(well almost).
Look for a Dell icon at the bottom of the screen on the program bar. You will need to access the touch pad through Dell's program as Microsoft doesn't know anything about it.
75.) Swamp Fox - 04/06/2017
I called Geek Squad because I knew I wasn't brushing the touchpad. Turns out that when the hard drive was replaced, the Synaptec driver wasn't installed. No idea why not. Geek Squad Goof, I suppose.

The weird thing is that they told me that the touchpad was "reading" touches without me doing any actual touching. Whoa!....Mind blown.

Be careful out there.

Now I have touchpad and mouse settings back, that I previously couldn't find to fix the problem. Duh. Synaptec is in the driver's seat at this point, and the free program I downloaded the other day is now superfluous.
What I didn’t mention was that before I learned to type (and before my family got our first home PC) we had a Brother word processor, a fantastic 80’s device that combined the functionality of a computer with none of the fun. [In the original, "none of the fun" is cross-out text. ---Your humble editor] Still, as a budding writer, I was mystified by the green and black interface and by the mechanical goodness of the printing process, which pounded out every word and punctuation mark with austere, efficient resolve. Just so nobody throws themselves off a bridge after my last post, here's a edited clip of the Customer Service Vindaloop bit from South Park. :dig:

I don't know what happened to the full version on youtube, which I think I've posted previously. But this will do in a pinch.

For context, the episode is about virtual reality, and what happens when no one can tell what's real or who they are anymore.

In other words, it is exactly like dealing with DirecTV, except please substitute eastern European accents, and DTV doesn't even bother asking if they've provided even minimal customer service, forget about good.

89.) Swamp Fox - 04/07/2017
Oh, one more difference: You can actually understand what Steve here is saying. In contrast, the first guy at DTV today was barely intelligible and the second lady (supervisor) spoke slightly better but had a bad phone line which we discovered after she accidentally disconnected me (!) and must have felt compelled to call me back, against corporate norms. If that hadn't happened, I'd probably still be on the phone with her saying stuff like, "Can you repeat that?" and "Are you saying...?"

Complete disaster.

And I can't swear they had eastern European accents. To be fair, I've been fooled by Philippine accents in the past. The point is that between the two of them, they averaged about a 40% intelligibility rating even without the accents. How the first guy especially got a job trying to communicate with anyone in English is a mystery to me.
90.) Swamp Fox - 07/14/2017
Okay, I can't find the info I need or anything even close to it on the innerweb, so I"m here where I probably should start with all my technical support questions.

I'm transferring Document files between two laptops. It's a small enough task that I'm doing it manually, and when I move the file from Laptop 1 to a thumb drive and then move that to Documents on Laptop 2, I notice that the whole file doesn't transfer, just the documents within it (and no master file, even empty). The documents don't even land in a similarly-named file (if there is one) on Laptop 2. They just show up on L2 as unsorted, unfiled individual docs. This means I have to recreate a file on L2 and then go find the individual documents in the Documents Library that belong there. I know there has to be a better way.

I'm not sure if the same thing happened with Pictures. That's more work to go through, but if it's important for the answer, I'll investigate.

Both computers are running Windows 7.
91.) bluecat - 07/14/2017
I notice that the whole file doesn't transfer, just the documents within it (and no master file, even empty).
I'm not sure what you mean here. Are you talking word documents that reference other documents?

Not sure if this is going to mean anything but I hate it when Microsoft tries to do things for you (creating file folders where your stuff is supposed to be filed.) I create my own subdirectories and put stuff where I want it. That way, when it is time to move, copy etc. I know where it is and I can create a similar structure somewhere else and then copy/move to the duplicate location.

Give me more info Swampy.
92.) DParker - 07/14/2017
I'm going to guess that you're using the word "file" here to actually refer to a "folder" (which is the metaphor used to describe the directory entry that "contains" files, which is what your documents are). Correct?
93.) bluecat - 07/14/2017

Yes. Folder. Sorry.
96.) Swamp Fox - 07/14/2017
Slight restatement of the issue: I just found a new folder called My Documents which MS must have created to dump the entire transfer into. Didn't notice it before. It was in the list of all my folders and documents, i.e., in my general Documents library. This is different from the My Documents sub-category which I've always had under the general Documents library. However, some of the documents were also loose and unfiled in a pre-existing list of loose documents, and I don't know if that's because I did multiple transfers slightly differently each time, or because MS is dumping them in a new folder it's creating (My Documents) and also duplicating individual docs in the general Documents Library for some reason.

I thought I was transferring folders which contain individual docs into my master Documents library, but now that I find they're being put in their own "transfer folder" ( a small "sub-sub" Documents folder, inside which is a My Documents folder, and inside THAT are my transferred folders and loose documents), I have to go in there and disburse them into the general Documents library? Seems a PITA. I don't know what's going on with the loose unfiled docs (duplicates?).

I'll try to pay closer attention today to exactly how I'm doing things and what the results are. Part of the confusion is that I have been making these transfers at the end of the day and then not looking at them for one or two days, so there's lots of opportunity for me to forget what I did and how I did it, LOL.

Sheesh, this is wearing me out....LOL

So what method are you using to transfer the folder(s) full of documents (not to be confused with binders full of women)? Since you said you're doing it manually I would assume you're using drag-and-drop, in which case I don't understand how it is that things are not ending up where you "drop" them in the target file system.

+3 :-)
100.) Jon - 07/14/2017
Swampy, when you "transfer" the files from laptop A to laptop 2, are you dragging them and dropping them into somewhere?
Generally when I transfer a file or group of files (called a folder) from one place to another, I sometimes have to re-route them because the computer sometimes places them where I don't want them.
You can make custom folders on the new laptop and just drag individual files or group of files (by highlighting them) to the custom folder so you'll know where they are.

I still don't understand why you can't cut and paste or drag a complete folder full of files to the new computer though.
101.) Swamp Fox - 07/14/2017
I probably didn't explain to clearly, aggravated by the fact that I discovered new info after the original post.

The short version at this point is that I'm "moving" folders on Laptop 1 to a thumb drive, and then depositing those files on Laptop 2, directing them to land in L2's "Documents Library" (say). Instead of showing up under "Documents" (main library) though, they'll show up in a sub folder called "Documents" with a folder inside THAT called "My Documents" which is where the "files" (transferred folders) will be. Then I can mouse those around (drag and drop or click to move) to where they're supposed to go.

I was kinda hoping that if I had folders on L1 and L2 both named "Hunting stories," say, that if I moved the folder to the thumb drive off L1 and then to L2 "Documents," the folder from L1 would find the same-named folder on L2 and the two would be merged, and that if no same-name folder existed that it would be dumped alphabetically in the main L2 Documents library.

But as bluecat mentioned, it looks like MS is creating a sub-folder within Documents which they confusingly name "Documents" again. They're putting it in the alphabetical listing of folders I created myself. It is doing this on its own, and I have to go in to it, open a sub-folder named My Documents and go in THERE to drag and drop the contents where I really want them.
102.) bluecat - 07/14/2017
When copying and pasting always see your source and destination. Don't assume anything. Here endeth the lesson.

"Oh and Jenkins, apparently your mother died."
103.) Swamp Fox - 07/14/2017
Is anybody saying that I should just drag and drop from the thumb drive directly?

I think what I've been doing is "moving" everything on the thumb drive to where it's "supposed to" go in one move. To Documents or to Pictures, say. I don't think I'm opening the thumb drive and then dragging and dropping from there.
104.) DParker - 07/14/2017

Understand that if you are moving an entire thumb drive (which contains folders and subfolders) to another location and that location doesn't have the folder structure like the original thumbdrive, all that infrastructure will be created on the destination drive, which might explain why you now have a bunch of folders and subfolders in the destination laptop.
106.) Swamp Fox - 07/14/2017
Okay. I don''t know how you structure a thumb drive, but I'll figure it out eventually. This is why I've always tried really hard to keep different work on different laptops, LOL. That's getting harder to do these days.

I was gonna look at some of my Dummies books last night to try to figure this out, but then I had two pints of Sierra Nevada and that idea went right out the window.

Thanks everybody for their help. I think it just comes down to "It doesn't really work the way you think it should work." ---LOL

Oops! Didn't see DP's post til just now! ---LMAO! ---At least I'm right about something today!
108.) bluecat - 07/14/2017
Just think of a thumb drive as a drive (like your computer drive c:) So if you just dump files into your thumb drive without placing them at a specific location (directory structure) the files will go to the root folder.

Your thumb drive will appear as a drive letter on your computer. So for our example we'll use F. So if I copy a file to F: it will appear in your thumb drive under no directory structure. BUT

if I copy a file to your thumb drive under the directory of Swampy_Files then it will be F:\Swampy_Files\"name of file".

I'm guessing you dragged your thumb drive to the destination computer that didn't have all that pre-existing directory structure and it recreated it all under your documents folder or wherever you were pointing when you let up on the mouse...
109.) Swamp Fox - 07/14/2017
Yeah, I didn't know you could/were supposed to do that with a thumb drive. Can't wait to see what a mess I have on my external back-up drives, too, now...LOL

I guess I'm researching external drive formatting sometime this weekend. :re:
110.) bluecat - 07/14/2017
A thumb drive is no different than any other drive except it is solid state. You can make directories on it like anything else.

It's not a formatting issue. It's an organizational issue.
111.) Swamp Fox - 07/14/2017
So I guess the idea is to create a directory that mirrors what I have on my laptops. That is: main folders or libraries for Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music and Downloads, basically. I think I figured out how to do that, at least at the reading level, LOL.

From what I can tell, I'm not done after that, though. I also have to create the sub folders (Hunting Stories, Fishing Stories, Joke of the Day, Insults by State and Nationality, etc.) What I briefly saw on the net looks daunting if you have a lot of folders. Basically creating them by hand, individually. Do people really recreate the structure of their whole libraries, or just a few folders as they need them?
112.) bluecat - 07/14/2017
Here's an even easier way.

Everything I save on my computer (personal files) has a type of pyramidal structure. So at the top might be "bluecats_most_excellent_files".

Below that you have all the subdirectories you want.

When it comes time to backup, I erase my thumb drive files (everything).
Drag "bluecats_most_excellent_files" from my computer to my thumb drive.
Now my thumb drive is a mirror image of the computer structure (with regards to "bluecats_most_excellent_files")

Now stick the thumb drive into the destination laptop and copy "bluecats_most_excellent_files" to a location of your choosing.

I would clean out the destination if it already contains "bluecats_most_excellent_files".

That way you now have an exact mirror image on your destination laptop. No need to create or recreate anything. You have the latest and the structure is the same.
113.) bluecat - 07/14/2017
You're welcome.

I get the theory. Two issues: One laptop has 12 years of work and accumulation on it. So there's no creating a new pyramid at this point, beyond the basic Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music, Downloads structure. So I would need to create a "master Master" folder or library and move all of the above into it? Then when I get that on an external drive and over to a destination laptop, I'm okay until the next time.

However, I get a major case of the heebie jeebies thinking about erasing that folder on L2 before the second transfer. I suppose theoretically you still have the info on L1 and supposedly on the external drive waiting to download to L2, but still...LOL

I sleep with a night light when it comes to this stuff...:ek:
117.) bluecat - 07/14/2017
The whole reason people do what I described is because of the scenario you described. I got dis-enchanted with the whole "My Documents" thing. It works good for a few instances but because I've got to "bug out" and get a new computer occasionally I wanted to be able to just grab a file directory and move the "sum bitch". It might be worth it to restructure your file directories. Once it's done it's a simple matter of maintenance.

I sleep buck naked.
118.) Swamp Fox - 07/14/2017
Really, the urgent thing is for me to learn where the damn documents and folders are landing under the current system, since I'm only moving a few things a few times a week.

I was going to get Geek Squad to synch the two laptops for the big-time data transfer if I can ever get three or four days that I can untether from the damn things.

But this is helpful stuff for me going forward. I knew there was some reason I didn't want to start blurring the lines between the two machines!

128.) Swamp Fox - 08/09/2017
I could use all the help I can get, LOL.

Sounds like she is a political vegan, and not motivated by health concerns? At least not primarily? I'm not sure you can or should do anything about health vegans. They'll find out eventually if they can live that way or not. Some people can, and some people can't, whether the main challenge is the discipline it takes or the effects on their bodies, or both. To each his own there.

With political vegans, or anybody else for that matter, I think you have to argue from their set of values primarily, and not from your own. This doesn't mean you can't throw in a zinger or a factoid every once in a while, but it's pretty stupid to quote Bible verses or cite "God's law" or "dominion" to a wholly secular opponent, for instance, if you're really trying to change a mind rather than win debate points. Yet I've seen it done.

More likely, hunters will refer to things like established concepts in conservation--"surplus", herd management, hunted vs. starved, we pay all the bills, and stuff like that--when arguing their case. I think that also falls on deaf ears most of the time. "You just want to act like a conservationist so you have more animals to kill" is the typical vegan/anti response. And it's not wrong in many cases. (Discussing where hunters don't seem to be walking the talk when the rubber hits the road is a whole thread in itself, and would have been a lot of fun on here in the old days, LOL.)

No, I think you have to figure out where someone is coming from and address those items head-on. Is it about animals suffering? Meat farming? Is it about "sentient beings"? (Low bar, I know, but they spout it without thinking about it.) Is it about a utopia where nothing dies so you can live? These are all addressable, and the winning arguments come with a fairly hefty dollop of facts if you care to study up. But one has to study the argument, or remain on the same emotional, fact-free level with your opponent, getting nowhere.

Years ago, I heard someone use a "snap your fingers" argument and ask vegans to imagine what would happen if all of a sudden we changed course. What would happen to the cows, pigs and chickens? So you're okay if their populations are drastically reduced? So you're really NOT against animals dying? Oh, you’re just against killing them? Really? What about the animals who live on the land that would have to be cleared for a massive change to a vegan diet? You seem to have a bee in your bonnet about corporate farming. Who do you think is going to be cranking out all the soybeans and the wheat? Farmer Brown or Big Agra? What about shipping massive amounts of food across the country, hither and yon, to make up for dietary changes and the impossibility of EVERYONE eating local economically? Or do carbon footprints and efficiency not matter to you? Etc.

As long as your points assault the vision they're proposing rather than defend your own position, you're ahead. They know your position and have already prepared their talking points. They’re very good at repeating what they've heard before. (Everyone is.) I find that what they're not quite so good at is defending their own position and its ramifications. This is probably because 1) they usually haven't really thought them through and 2) they're rarely challenged on them, because meat eaters and consumptive outdoorsmen are too busy playing defense. We never get around to knocking down the building blocks of their argument because we're on the wrong side of the ball and forming up the same old way.

I'm sure I could go on, and maybe I will later if something occurs to me, but I think if you occasionally drop one or two of these Thought Bombs on a young impressionable vegan wannabee when she pipes up, it could make a difference before it's too late. I have some faith that a thoughtful person might be able to come out the other side of the echo chamber of high school and college with his or her head screwed on straight, but it's a challenge.

So, Thanksgiving should be fun... LOL.
So, how will the the upcoming Solar Eclipse effect deer movement in the Path of Totality???
A lot of deer traveling back and forth between bedding and cyber cafes or the public library, in order to buy Eclipse Glasses on Amazon would be my bet.

"There's a stand for that."
Also - Dear Experts, I need your advice. I've got a young niece that is vegan and at family functions she is very vocal about spouting the benefits of vegan lifestyle How should I handle this touchy situation???
Depends on how old she is. If by young you mean teen or pre-teen don't waste your breath. Most young uns at this stage of their life grab onto a concept or philosophy and they don't move off it until their either proven flat wrong or they mature.

If she is edging close to senior in high school and beyond this works for me:
"Nothing in this world is without consequence. There is a ying and yang to everything. A vegan lifestyle displaces habitat no matter what way you cut it. Vegetables have to grow somewhere and the greater demand, the more wildlife habitat is consumed to meet the demand for produce. Just as the plants need to grow somewhere the animals that used to live on the land need to GO somewhere or be killed as pests destroying the crop. If the vegan is not a totally organic vegan then there is the added variable of additional pesticides and fertilizer run off."

Alternate approach:
"There is no such thing as 100% vegan. You can't live in this world without animal products touching your life in ways you never thought of. How about bone meal? Bone meal (or Bone manure) is a mixture of finely and coarsely ground animal bones and slaughter-house waste products. This is very common certified organic fertilizer used to grow the plant products vegetarians and vegans consume."

P.S
The hardcore vegans will respond to the alternate approach by saying something like "Well you have to start somewhere?" I usually ask "Why?"

P.S.S
There is no winning or losing. If you have ignited a teeny tiny flicker of reflection on anything you might say that's about all you can hope for.

"Because just because you can't do everything doesn't mean you shouldn't do something. Living vegan is the morally right thing to do, and will lessen our environmental impact on the earth, which is in desperate straits. You should do whatever is possible and practicable to exclude all forms of exploitation of and cruelty to animals for food, clothing or any other purpose."

******

This is typical vegan rhetoric, and is quite the elastic barrier to break through, as you can see. They're moral crusaders, so they are impervious to humor or arguments which don't address their premises dead on, and they don't respond well to "Let's let you do your thing and me do mine."

When addressing conservation, biological facts and "laws of nature" seems to be going nowhere, it's time to make them face the fact that they're intolerant authoritarians at heart. Ask them what they're going to do to keep the Third World from scrounging every scrap of animal and fish utility it can find, since meat is immoral (murder, even) and you have to start somewhere. And the Third World world is already eating all the plants and grains they can grow and we can ship to them, so...

Oh. Really? We should cut them some slack? It's okay for them to seek animal protein and products, but since we're a First World society we should be the ones making all the sacrifices? It's okay for them to use animals, but not us. So it's not really a moral problem at all, in terms of moral absolutes. It's really about First World privilege, and kinda depends on the situation...Okey dokey, then.

And so on down the rabbit hole of redistributionist authoritarian ideologies you go...

This is why I disagree with ignoring youthful political veganism, and think it's never too early to nip it in the bud.

137.) Swamp Fox - 08/10/2017
So the real questions are does she bring her own food to family gatherings, or who's nice enough to go out of their way to accommodate her, and does she let everyone else eat in peace or is she up on a high horse the whole time?

I find some of the ex-vegan writing very interesting and often it addresses the most common arguments (from both sides). It's helpful in figuring out what's behind the vegan propaganda and talking points, which is good because so much of that is unverifiable, unsupported nonsense, sucking up all the oxygen in a debate. Paying attention to vegans or ex-vegans who have left the space of their more insistent and even militant comrades seems the best way to learn how to talk to the ones still in the bubble.

If you don't have children, especially teenagers who think they know everything (and don't) it's impossible to "nip" anything. Doing so serves only to raise blood pressure, cause words to come out of your mouth that you may regret and ultimately has ZERO effect on their belief system.

When it comes to real world stuff like bullying, sex, faith, drugs and how to treat your fellow man/woman? That's a much different story. Those are battles worth waging all day, everyday. Veganism or vegetarianism? If there's no teeny tiny hint of rational thought it's better to seal one's lips and choose the battle.

My two cents from a father of four.
144.) luv2bowhunt - 08/11/2017
I have 4 daughters and will have to side with Bob on this one. You've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em.

So many times I should have taken a softer approach. What works for teen boys does not necessarily (or probably) work with teen girls.
145.) Swamp Fox - 08/11/2017
I can see that approach if we're talking the "dumb kid" form of veggie chic...Not to say anyone's kids are dumb out there...LOL.

There's a point beyond that, though, that I don't think is any different from any other kind of wrong-headedness that one would want to straighten out as soon as possible.

Where does she live that pretty much everyone doesn't already of the "opportunity" to eat produce? I'm pretty sure most restaurant menus include a "salad" section, and most have other meatless options as well.

She' just another preachy vegan laboring under the delusion that the only reason we don't adopt her "lifestyle" is that we just don't know what vegetables taste like.
