1.) bluecat - 04/18/2016
Went to the land of milk and honey to do some turkey hunting where we battled wind and rain and cold.

Was able to decoy birds on two separate occasions. Both times the birds walked away with a few less feathers.

The first bird was broadside and I aimed just above the spectrum. The arrow whizzed right through but didn't catch anything vital. He moved off a few yards where I zipped him again with the same result.

The bird then promptly went out to a neighboring field and started strutting!

The next bird came in straight away. I was getting ready to try a head shot when he turned broadside. I lined everything up and shot. The arrow landed at his feet. Apparently the arrow came off the rest when I drew and I didn't realize it. I had drawn facing down and then brought the bow up slowly. The bird then started walking off. I dead centered his back but he just kept going. Gave him a couple hours and never found a sign of him after about 2 hours of searching.

Both birds were within 10 yards. Not blaming my equipment although I'm wondering if I'm going about this the hard way.

I'm ready to start using the guillotine heads and cutting the netting out of the blind. I've had it.
2.) bluecat - 04/18/2016
Stopped at a farmer's house and snapped a picture. The homestead reminded me of Camp Swampy where I spent a week there one night.

I counted 30 cats from my vantage point. I needed a wide angle lens.
3.) Swamp Fox - 04/18/2016
Tourists! :re:...LOL

This is why I never give out my address...:p
4.) Swamp Fox - 04/18/2016
You got more shots in one sit than I've gotten most seasons, LOL....

Why didn't you just nail him IN the spectrum? Above seems too high to me...I'd have to see the posture, but I do think there's a "too high" scenario to the children's nursery rhyme "Shoot 'em high, watch 'em die."

Get rid of the net, man! Gives you all sorts of extra room on top of anything else.

I still can't warm up to Guillotines too much for some reason.
5.) bluecat - 04/18/2016
They owner did mention they don't have a mice or rat problem...

Well...the top edge of the spectrum according to the videos I posted. We need to ask Dan-o where he shoots them.
I used to be an IN the spectrum proponent until the videos. Now I'm just not sure anymore.
7.) bluecat - 04/18/2016
I've killed them by taking out their thighs too. They bleed out fast.
8.) Swamp Fox - 04/18/2016
Or a butterfly or bumblebee problem either, prolly...LOL

You should see around here when something's in bloom...It's like the little rascals are third graders at an amusement park for the first time....
9.) bluecat - 04/18/2016
They were pretty cute. They weren't really wild as I was able to walk within a few yards of them as a stranger and they were well fed.
10.) Swamp Fox - 04/18/2016

I draw a line through the top of the beard and up a leg which is perpendicular to the ground, or close to it. That's my aiming point. Or at least that's the point where when my pin passes it, I shout "Yee-haw!" and punch the trigger---LOL--

If somehow "above the spectrum" is higher than that, that would be too high for me.

We should watch the videos again in this thread.

If I were DParker, I could say "Make it so" right now, and be completely in character.:wink
11.) bluecat - 04/18/2016

12.) bluecat - 04/18/2016
Forgot to mention that Scruffy, the attack Jack Russell Terrier, got sprayed by a skunk. Good times. It was 41 degrees and raining with a stiff wind on the last day. Windchill was around freezing.
13.) Swamp Fox - 04/18/2016
So I won't mention that the girls at Chapel Hill are running around in shorts and short dresses lately...
14.) bluecat - 04/18/2016
Probably trying to take the attention off the basketball team.
15.) Swamp Fox - 04/18/2016
It's working...The team has always taken a back seat to them in my heart...LOL
16.) bluecat - 04/18/2016
What did you think of the turkey shot placement videos?
17.) bluecat - 04/18/2016
I really don't want to be doing trigonometry when I'm supposed to be shooting a bird - this angle intersecting this angle which bisects this angle of the straight line drawn from... which is perpendicular to the tangent of the cosign.
18.) bluecat - 04/18/2016
It's working...The team has always taken a back seat to them in my heart...LOL
I'm guessing you wouldn't mind getting in the back seat.
19.) Swamp Fox - 04/18/2016
You've posted the first one before but the second was new to me. I agree with those placements. None of mine would have been more than an inch or two different. Of course, it's very convenient that they can computer-magically show you that the turkey's vitals are exactly where they say they would shoot, and so of course their lines-method is perfect as well, LOL.

Do you know if a significant number of those kills are coming from one particular broadhead, or at least a small group of heads?
20.) bluecat - 04/18/2016
Both of the videos I copied from the original thread. I don't think it's a broadhead thing. It's an ID10T error.
21.) Swamp Fox - 04/18/2016
I'm guessing you wouldn't mind getting in the back seat.
With the girls you mean, right? ---LOL

I don't want to have to come out there and kick your ass....
22.) bluecat - 04/18/2016
The turkeys I shoot at have a little relief map of the vitals that project out and back just before I shoot.
23.) bluecat - 04/18/2016

25.) Swamp Fox - 04/18/2016
I found that when I got 3-d targets (realistic ones) I could train my little peabrain to pick the right spot on a live animal a lot better.

I should have invested sooner.

This keyboard's going in the shop...:bang:....Pls. forgive all the typos lately/in the near future---I'm about to throw it against the wall.
wasp jackhammers.. them thing are deadly on turkeys..i wouldnt even use the screen for turkeys.
Can you get pass-throughs on millipedes?
29.) bluecat - 04/18/2016
My friends blind is a Baronet (POS). Worst designed thing I have seen in a while. The poles sit square in the window and the bottom of the window is WAY too tall. Not made for bowhunting. We dug out the ground at the front so the blind would sit lower. I couldn't even shoot from my knees as the material was too high for my arrow to clear. Had to shoot half standing- half crouching. The whole time you are shooting you are praying the arrow doesn't hit the pole and come back on you. What a joke. No wonder I suck.
30.) bluecat - 04/18/2016
I used a DSD hen on the ground and a Primos jake strutter with a real jake fan attached. That seemed to work. The jake looked like a high school punk with zits. No way a Tom doesn't want to kick it's ass and make off with the homecoming queen.
31.) bluecat - 04/18/2016
Swampy, do you still have the picture of you at your high school prom in your baby blue tux?
32.) bluecat - 04/18/2016
Swampy, you still have the picture of you at your high school prom in your robin's-egg-blue tux?
33.) bluecat - 04/18/2016
That thing was sweet. Hellooo ladies.
34.) bluecat - 04/18/2016

Here's a pic of that POS.
35.) bluecat - 04/18/2016
I'd have to be Rebecca Lobo to be high enough on my knees to shoot out of that thing. Who designed that, someone from PETA?
36.) bluecat - 04/18/2016
I will say, I'm really liking the Hoyt Defiant 34.
37.) Swamp Fox - 04/18/2016
Blinds for bowhunting have gotten a lot better since I last noticed a Baronet. I think the thing they had going for them at the time was cost, since I was looking for several blinds to put out and leave and not worry about.

Primos makes some good ones but I haven't really studied blinds in a while. Check and see if they still make the Ground Max. I also saw what they advertised as a two-person blind the other day and while the material was a little thin I would look harder at it if I had had more time. Or that might have been a Gander Mtn blind...

Anyway, get nice one...Not too expensive....Nee!...I mean not too heavy...

I do like a big blind, whether for gun hunting or bow. Even if you hunt by yourself, it helps with naps and stretching out, LOL.

In addition to easy set-up and take-down, two musts for me in a new blind would be magnetic windows and mesh you can move around (open and close) on a track. I don't know if anyone's come up with anything else ingenious lately, but that's where I start.

P.S. You can use the posts from the old blind to help back your boat trailer even if it is invisible (ask me how I know), the netting can be used as a strainer for coffee grounds in camp, and the fabric could come in hand one Halloween, so don't throw anything away...At least that's my advice...

Also, if you want to learn how to use the Solunar Tables to know when to switch from brown liquor to clear, just ask...

How did you know?
39.) crookedeye - 04/18/2016
i have the double bull darkhorse which is the one i like best..besides my matrix.. t2 and a couple others ..my dad just gave me the ameristep doghouse blind he had..spring acttavated! that thing can do damage if you dont no what youre doing..

i'm taking out the shotgun this weekend..i an't playing around anymore...
40.) Swamp Fox - 04/18/2016
I have a Dark Horse as well...Very nice. What are the prosand consof the T2 and the Matrix in comparison, in case I comeacross someusedfor a goodprice?

I apologize for the keyboard.
41.) crookedeye - 04/18/2016
the darkhorse as you no has the port windows for side shots in case the taper gets to extreme..the matrix is bascialy the same..i used to wrestle with that thing before i watch a vedio on how to put it up and take it down..the t2 is a good deer blind with the big screen window in front..compact also.
42.) Swamp Fox - 04/18/2016
I think I bought the Dark Horse jast as the Matrix wastakingover for it...So I was afraid to look too hard at the differences afterI had alreadyplunked my money down...LOL...
43.) Swamp Fox - 04/18/2016
I woundupbuying a few Ameristepblinds for mylittle project way back beforeI got into my current Primos and Double Bull arsenal.I can't rememberthe nameof the blind, but it was nearly impossibleto set up or take down without breaking a rod. They changed phone numbersor something and becameimpossibleto find for service unless you knew they were affiliated with some kitchenware outfit or something (true story), and then they wanted half amonth's rent for a set of replacement rods and hubs.I was stupid enough to buy somethinglike three complete sets over the years until I wised up.

I finally took all the rods out of them to use for other things and now I hang the blinds with cord if I can find an overhanginglimbin a good spot. Not the best, but if you have nowhere else to go in the rain or something, at least they'reout there in the woodsinstead ofin a heap in the back of my storageunit.
44.) bluecat - 04/18/2016
I have a T2 that I carry constantly. I wasn't in it when I shanked that turkey. What would you think about cutting the netting out of it?

I have dark horse that I've never used. I know it's a good blind but it's heavy like my brother.
45.) crookedeye - 04/18/2016

the darkhorse is heavy.lol i read somewhere if you cut the netting out of the t2 , it screws with the structure of the t2 making it sang.. thats hard to believe though..i thought about cutting some openings in mind but never have..

I was wondering about that midriff bulge...

I can always shoot out the side of course. Wish they still made that blind.
47.) crookedeye - 04/18/2016
i like the netting for deer..i shot everything from slicktricks to wasp expandables threw the netting and both shot good out to 30 yards..

You might offer them a cat or two if your low on dough. Don't trade Miss bluecat though. She's precious and of good stock.

Or you might just tell them you touched a woman's boob and I bet they would fix anything you wanted just to hear the story. Just keep stringing them along until all your electronics are fixed.

Geek Squad: "Tell us Mr. Swampy about the booby touches."

Swampy: "There's a laptop that needs defragged and the keyboard needs work. Once upon a time..."

Geek Squad: "Okay the laptop is fixed. Tell us more."

Swampy: "I want this wireless router installed first."

Geek Squad: "Then will you tell us more about the booby touches?"

I'll just throw this out. Don't know if it is the cause or not but recently I was working on a laptop and I tend to lay my wrists on the touch pad. I would be typing along and the cursor would jump to another location and I would overwrite what was already written. I got the touch pad turned off and everything returned to normal. I was thinking maybe your touchpad came on as it is probably the default.
86.) Swamp Fox - 04/19/2016
Well, thanks for the guess, but I'msure that'snot it. The spacebar is sticking andthat happenedsuddenly, essentially for no good reason.Laptop went unused--or virtually unused at the most--for a week, andwhen I startedusingitagain, this started.

I'm going tokeep an eye out for problems beyond that untilI can get up to Geek Squad---Iassumethey can repair orclean a keyboard---, because I'm told sometimesmy internet connection is too slow to keep upwith my typing, especially when I have a bunchof windows open.I don'tkknowif that's really the case or not,but it sounds plausible. Yesterday there were letters appearingand getting dropped everywhere.Maybe it was all me,but I doubt it. But nowthat I'mback at my regular desk in my regular posture, maybe my typing willimprove, LOL.

Hmmmm....sticky keys on a laptop you use to surf the internet. I'm not going to say whether or not I think the reason for that is a good one or not...I'm not here to judge anyone.

Swampy, put that keyboard in the dishwasher. It's a biohazard.

It's almost like I have a crystal ball...

I typically hunt in a blind while turkey hunting with bow or gun, Unless I'm with someone, I don't run and gun much. I got this ameristep battleground(?) blind last year. It's a nicer cheap blind, has the pop out panels with a hub and I like the camo. Once you understand how to set it up, it really takes seconds but if you don't pop out the roof panel first, you'll be cussing for 15 minutes!
Turkeys here are very quiet, don't know whats up but they went from being vocal to silent in one day.

I don't know how turkeys respond in your neck of the woods, but an exposed blind like that in my area, all you would see are turkeys running.

Looks like a nice blind Jon.

I'll send you some cool Swamp Fox Gear (TM) from Swampy's Flea Market and Swap Shop (SM) if you'll take the Worst Turkey Blind Ever Challenge (also TM)...That's where you hunt out of the worst-looking turkey blind you can think of and report on your experience.

Maybe the blind's been out in the sun for four years and has been bleached pink, or you set it up and hunt it in the middle of nowhere, with no cover...I'll bet your report includes the words, "I never thought this would happen to me" or at least "I can't believe the turkeys didn't care." :wink

Other forum members---if they do, in fact, exist---can also participate. Less valuable parting gifts may be distributed if instead of turkey hunting out of a so-called bad blind, they merely tell an amusing story about one. :pop:

Well I can see one advantage to setting up a blind out in the open. Less ticks.

I might take you up on the challenge Swampy. The competition will be pretty fierce though. LOL!

The Eastern's here (and everywhere I've hunted eastern's) don't give a flip about a blind no matter where you put it. They just don't pay one bit of attention to it.
Sounds like your turkeys act like deer around an exposed blind.

They do, but everything I read and hear supports what you are saying.

And they don't think much of Hoosiers, neither...

LOL

In light of another thread, maybe the turkeys here are fruity...:wink

Ok... All our hunters have come and gone. I've got a week to get out and get a bird for our team! After a rather large number of misses this year, a lot of birds are call shy, blind shy and decoy shy. But, we have a lot of birds so........

Put a new blind in the middle of a ranch road and show us how it's done!
