Went out Sunday for one last chance at a turkey. As I was crossing a barbed wire fence I felt a horrific pain in my leg. Had not felt that kind of pain in a while. I figured I hit a staub on my shin from the nearby tree. A short time later, the pain was just not subsiding. I looked down at my shin on the off chance I'd been bitten by a snake, I saw a branch from a thorny locust on my pant leg. I attempted to brush it off and it didn't move. Now I'm putting two and two together. I gave a little tug and extracted the cluster of 3 and 4 inch spines from my shin. I then lifted up my pant leg and saw that I'd taken 3 spines right in the shin. There was no blood or serious penetration because the spines had been stopped by my shin bone. Good news, as those would have gone in all the way into the muscle. The area on my leg is still pretty sensitive to touch and throbs at night but I think I'm pretty lucky how it all turned out.

The last time I encountered those thorns, I ended up in the emergency room as the wound had become infected. Sorry I forgot to snap a pic of the culprits.

[I]They say you're a hard-put and desperate man... Now, them poultices be laced with feathermoss and mustard root. Mind you drop water on 'em occasional and keep 'em damp.

LOL, Josey Wales?

There is just nothing redeemable about those trees.
4.) bluecat - 05/31/2016
Okay Okay, except for the extremely hard wood that is suitable for furniture.
5.) bluecat - 05/31/2016
...and the high heat they provide when burned.

Okay, except for the extremely hard wood that is suitable for furniture and the high heat they provide when burned, they have no redeeming qualities.

Okay, except for the extremely hard wood that is suitable for furniture and the high heat they provide when burned and the nice dappled shade they provide they have no redeeming qualities.

...and the fact that they respond to injuries by protecting themselves from further injury.

Besides the extremely hard wood that is suitable for furniture and the high heat they provide when burned and the nice dappled shade and the fact that they respond to injuries by protecting themselves from further injury, what have thorny locusts ever done for us?
10.) bluecat - 05/31/2016
Brought extremely attractive wood?
