What's new in hunting and fishing apps? What works and what doesn't?

Any brilliant new capabilities to map or scout land from afar?

What's new in the world of dedicated GPS units, or even smartphone GPS that would be of practical use tens of miles from the nearest Starbucks?
2.) Jon - 07/19/2016
I like the Scout Look app for hunting, it has allot of kool options. I don't use anything except the google maps app on my phone anymore as far as a GPS
3.) Swamp Fox - 07/19/2016
I was using Scoutlook for weather for a long time and got away from it because I thought it was unreliable. I never got the wind they said I should get was the main problem, if I remember, LOL.

I did put both the hunting and fishing versions on my smartphone when I got it, though I don't use the phone itself all that much. Maybe I'll get a chance to try it again this season. Since my previous use was all on a laptop, I never used any of the "in the field" stuff.

Hunt Stand is an app I found last summer and just downloaded this spring. I found some of the mapping stuff useful and pretty easy to deal with, even on a small screen and tapping like a monkey intuitively. There's also a few things that would be useful to a group, and it gives you property ownership and boundary info, which I only recently figured out. I think that's new since I downloaded it a few months ago.

I have HuntStand as well. I haven't made any heavy use of it yet, but it seems pretty capable and easy to use. In addition to being small screen friendly, if you register your app you can use their website to create your hunting areas and other stuff and then sync them to the app on your phone.
5.) Swamp Fox - 07/19/2016
Thanks for pointing that out. I never got that idea from the phone for some reason.

LOTS easier to work on the laptop and then synch. Also, it seems like I find areas more quickly even on the phone in this app than I usually do on a laptop with GoogleEarth. Maybe I'm getting better at it, but years ago, I'd start out looking for something in Virgina and wind up scrolled into Georgia. :re: LOL

One annoying thing is the property boundaries. I thought I had them on the phone but when I synched with the laptop, three out of five of them were gone. I probably did something wrong, but I wound up deleting my areas and re-entering them. In the course of all that, I think I figured out you have to go looking for the "show boundaries" button, make sure it stays checked between screens, and then hold your mouth right when you click "save boundary."

Everything's peachy now, but if this stuff were any more complicated than "click here" and "swipe that" I'd be lost, LOL.
6.) DropzOfWild - 07/21/2016
I as well use the hunt stand app and have for the last 3 years... I bought the scoutlook deerlog app 4 years back I think and haven't touched it since the huntstand. The new part of sharing and editing is freaking awesome. I actually have had more consistent weather reporting with this app as well. It has everything for free that I paid for through scoutlook and it's IMO better ....
Happy Apping
7.) Swamp Fox - 07/21/2016
Here's some GPS and mapping stuff I'm looking into, if you want to call it that. If anything comes closer to an almost-substitute to a dedicated GPS device, with useful additional features, I'm not aware of it, but would be interested to hear.

I haven't dug down too deep yet, but here are two items I think are especially interesting:

http://www.terrainnavigator.com/MobileMaps

http://www.terrainnavigator.com/Product

The desktop version is pricey, but for the right user looks very interesting. The mobile app is more affordable for the more casual user. It's just a matter of how casual, LOL.

I keep threatening to pull out my old MyTopo stuff (or at least visit the website) to see what I've been missing in the last five or ten years (more?). Any more recent users want to chime in? If I recall, I passed on Navigator a while back because I thought what I had already was sufficient, but I doubt the mobile app was out then, and it seems like they've added some things to the desktop version which might make one rethink it.
8.) Jon - 07/22/2016
Do you realize that huntstand takes up 10.22MB? That's huge
9.) Swamp Fox - 07/22/2016
On my phone, if I look in Storage, it shows 30+ MB for HuntStand, plus my small amount of HS data so far (around 2 MB). I thought I'd seen elsewhere that it was 5-something total, but I can't find that right now and I'm not going to go looking for it unless somebody wants to guess where I might have dreamt that up from, and can clue me in.

I have 16 GB storage on the phone (not counting SD card) with 10+ being used, and essentially this phone is right out of the box with a moderate number of contacts, maybe four apps that I put on there myself, and about three pictures, LOL. Everything else was on the phone when I got it.

If you tech gurus think I need to clear some stuff out of there, whether by dumping it altogether or moving it to the SD card, let me know, 'cause I'm skeered to go mucking around in there alone.

:omg:

I looked in Misc Files etc and see stuff I don't know how important it is, but I haven't tried moving or deleting anything so far.

Android's ability to relocate apps to the SD card is essentially useless. For reasons that require a lot of techie-geek babble that I won't bore you with, you might save a little bit of internal storage space by relocating an app to the SD card, but the total space used ends up being nearly double. Some apps don't even allow you to move them anyway. But wait, there's more....if you're running "Marshmallow" (the latest release of Android) you don't have the option of relocating apps to the SD card at all. That is, unless you "adopt" the SD card as virtual internal storage...an option that has several pros AND cons (more on that here: Android 6.0 Marshmallow tip: ‘Adopt’ your MicroSD card as internal storage).

That said, many apps allow you to set a configuration option that specifies where the app's data will reside (rather than the app itself), and this is where you can actually free up some internal storage space. Unfortunately, HuntStand doesn't appear to offer such an option, so....never mind.

My trusty old Samsung Galaxy S4 finally crapped out a couple of months ago, so I replaced it with an unlocked Galaxy S7 Edge. In addition to its 32GB of internal storage I jumped on an Amazon "Prime Day" deal on a SanDisk Ultra 64 GB class 10 microSD card for $14.99, so now I have 96 GB of space in the phone to chew up with all sorts of nonsense. My phone laughs at HuntStand's storage requirements.

No farting in its general direction?
13.) Swamp Fox - 07/22/2016
Thanks for that. I'll look at the Marshmallow thing later.

I might just delete a bunch of apps that appear in the long list, but which don't appear on the extended home screens. Looks like a bunch of nonsense in there.

Also, I think I can move stuff other than apps to the card? If so, how about I just go through my storage categories and move everything I don't recognize as being useful or potentially supporting something else? LOL...

How bad can it be? :dig:

You can definitely relocate all of your media (photos, videos, music and other audio files, etc). In fact, depending on how you use your phone those might end up being what uses the lion's share of space on your phone (between the videos and several hundred songs and photos I have, that's the case with my phone.)
15.) Swamp Fox - 07/22/2016
Yeah, I don't have a lot of media, but I realize that people put that stuff on their cards. I was thinking more about files that you find in the various categories under "Storage." That is, stuff that was on the phone before I got my paws on it.

As I said earlier, there's almost nothing of my own on the phone at this point. That's why I was a little disappointed to see more than 60% of my phone's storage space taken up already.

I'm an omnidirectional breaker of wind.

I'm guessing that you got your phone via your service provider? If so, that 60% is largely due to all of the bloatware (aka "unnecessary crap") that AT&T, Verizon, et al load their phones up with before they sell them to you, and that you can't remove without "rooting" the phone (not something you want to mess around with). That...in addition to getting it at a lower cost...is why I went with an unlocked phone straight from Samsung (well, actually...from a retailer...but not from AT&T - my service provider). It doesn't have any of that provider-specific garbage on it. The potential downside of doing it that way was that retailers are funny about wanting the full purchase price right up front, whereas your service provider will let you pay it off monthly over a 2 or 2.5 year contract period. But going through Amazon I not only got the phone for significantly less than AT&T wanted to charge me, I used an Amazon Store Card no-interest-for-1-year promotion to take the sting out of buying not only my phone, but my wife's as well (she just had to have a Galaxy S7 if I was getting a new phone, y'know).

Didn't realize this.
18.) Swamp Fox - 07/22/2016
Yeah, I was looking at my phone's specs as you were typing that, probably.

Of the 16 GB they advertise, the specs show just over 11 as "available" to the user.

Good to know for next time, if I see a phone I like that Verizon can support. Assuming I'm still happy with Verizon in the future, of course.

Live and learn.

And you know what else chaps my behind? Anything that doesn't provide you with a hard copy owner's manual/user's guide. It's always fun searching on line to see if you can find where someone will tell you how to use something, LOL.

Olympus or somebody wanted to charge me something like $20 plus shipping for a manual a while back. I like to have the damn instructions in my hands, but not that bad.

:tap:
19.) Swamp Fox - 07/22/2016
And don't even get me started on instruction manuals, whether paper or virtual, that are generic to a product series, not to the actual damn model you own.

I mean, really, is it so hard if you're selling Model X to just get a Model X manual printed, instead of a manual that contains irrelevant information that will just confuse the customer who didn't buy any one of the other three models also discussed? (And not in different sections of the manual, either. Oh, no! They have to put all the information for everything they ever manufactured in a jumble.) Especially since the manual writing staff isn't usually bright enough or sufficiently proficient in English to clearly explain what the hell you're looking at in the first place.

Okay, I'm aggravated enough for one day. Is it Beer Thirty yet?
