1.) Swamp Fox - 07/25/2016
Give your fellow forum addicts a heads-up or a thumbs-down on any movies you'd like: Current, gone to cable, or hard to find.

I broke down and rented Rushmore the other day because I apparently missed it when it was on one of my "free" channels (:re:) a month or two ago ...I've probably seen it three times already, but I'm looking forward to another. Great quirky, funny cult film, and one of the best soundtracks of all time, as far as I'm concerned.

Now I need some help. Incredibly, I read some of my email today. Up toward the top of my 16000 unread messages (you think I'm kidding) ---Thank God---is an offer from DirecTV for today only. Free movie rental. (Y'all might want to check your own inboxes.. :wink)

So what I need help with is this: Here's a list of movies I could talk myself into watching for free. Which ones would you pick?

(On a side note, all the horror films get four stars from the review pop-up, which seems strange to me, because most DTV movies seem to get a 2.5 or three, tops).

I'm not a big horror movie guy, but just in case someone wants to recommend one, here's what's on offer:

10 Cloverfield Lane
Crimson Peak
What We Do In The Shadows
Willow Creek
It Follows

I'm more likely to pick from these:

The Duel (Woody Harrelson)--action
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (Tina Fey)---Afghan war humor, allegedly
London Has Fallen (Morgan Freeman and some white dude)--Action
Captain America: The First Avenger
Marvel's The Avengers
Avengers: Age of Ultron

All the Avengers movies have high marks as well.

So, which movie should I catch for free, since my other two options tonight are letting my head explode watching the DNC clown show, or having my eyes roll up in the back of my head finishing the last four exciting hours of my continuing education requirement six days ahead of the deadline?

Here's what else is on offer, BTW, if the link works:

I dig those types of flicks as well. The best one's I've seen in past few years were The Grand Budapest Hotel (Ralph Fiennes is brilliant in everything he does) and The Life Aquatic. And Moonlight Kingdom would have been excellent had they not decided to go with that completely pointless borderline kiddie porn scene.

IMHO the only thing that one had going for it was John Goodman (unless you're a horny 20-something male, in which case substitute Mary Elizabeth Winstead for Goodman).

What We Do In The Shadows
Willow Creek

Sorry, I've not seen any of these.
The Duel (Woody Harrelson)--action

I'm no help here either.
Captain America: The First Avenger

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Honestly, I think the whole comic book movie thing jumped the shark quite a while ago, and the Iron Man/Avengers ones are just unwatchable (and yet, I've watched them). Age of Ultron was particularly awful. But then again, I'm just a grumpy old fart. Get off my lawn. :tap:
Here's what else is on offer, BTW, if the link works:

https://www.directv.com/movies
I couldn't bring myself to even consider watching Batman v Superman. The whole premise of a serious battle between...
An indestructible alien with the strength of an extinction-event-causing asteroid, x-ray vision that melts steel and the ability to not only fly, but do it so fast that he can travel backward in time
...vs...
A rich guy in a rubber suit and with belt full of Sharper Image gadgets
...was just too brain-dead even for me. Ben Affleck didn't help matters either.

A few movies I have seen this year, either on the big screen or sitting in my own living room on my not-quite-as-big screen (that I recall, at least, and are worth commenting on). Not necessarily helpful to you in terms of the DirecTV decision, but maybe in other ways...like if you have Netflix or something. I'll post more as I remember them:

Independance Day: Resergence - No. Just.....no.

The Revenant - We already covered this in a thread here. If you haven't seen it, do so.

The Witch - An interesting low-budget tale of a Puritan family on their own in witch-hunt era New England. Not great, but worth downing a bowl of popcorn over when you've got a free evening.

Er ist wieder da (Translation: "Look Who's Back") - Hitler awakes in 2015 Germany (looking oddly like Conan O'Brian with acne issues). Hilarity ensues. The ending is disappointingly PC, but it's an otherwise surprisingly fun flick (subtitled, of course).

Lucy - Scarlett Johansson is insanely hot (duh). That's about it.

Trollhunter - More subtitles, this time from Norway. Dopey found-footage flick about a group of film students following a guy who hunts trolls in the Norwegian wilderness on contract to a super-secret government agency. The premise alone should have been enough to make me hate it....but I didn't.

Ghostbusters - Ahhhh...just kiddin'. I wouldn't see this one even if it the aforementioned Ms. Johansson invited me to a private screening of it in her home theater.

I'll be back in a bit to read/digest/regurgitate/comment on the rest of that a little later.

Thanks in the meantime.

I've had Grand Budapest Hotel on DVR for several months now. I need to watch it before football cranks up and I lose all my space, LOL

Have heard about The Life Aquatic but don't remember the idea of it. Just that it was good. Haven't heard of Moonlight Kingdom.

I'm liable to take a chance on the Avengers movies, especially Captain America by himself. Big fan back in the day. I could care less about some of the other dudes and dudettes. Ironman flicks, especially the original, with Robert Downey Jr. are basically awful, as I mentioned in another thread.

I saw the Thor movie a while back and it wasn't bad. It helped if you knew something about Thor, or at least the comic, though. They didn't do a great job of walking a newbie through any of the mythology, whether comic or Nordic. I'd give it a B, similar to the B I'd give High Plains Drifter, with my man Clint, if you need a point of reference.

Big fan of the Spiderman movies, especially the first one.

I'll have to put The Revenant, The Witch, the German flick, Lucy and Troll Hunter on my bucket list. They all sound up my alley.
7.) Swamp Fox - 07/25/2016
Life of Pi was excellent. Not for everyone, but I enjoyed it. And it had a THEME! How cool is that these days?
8.) DParker - 07/25/2016
Haven't heard of Moonlight Kingdom.
That's because I'm an idiot who couldn't type the actual name of the movie, which was Moonrise Kingdom.

Just for grins (and because TV sucks in general) I started watching the Stargate SG-1 series on Netflix. Their version of the origins of Norse mythology is a little more Erik Van Daniken. Thor, of the race known as the Asgards:

Honestly, Lucy was pretty horrible. If it hadn't been for Scarlett I'd have turned it off after 15 minutes and watched Family Feud reruns instead.
9.) Swamp Fox - 07/25/2016
Well, thanks for the warning. If I come across it, maybe I'll put it on mute and just watch Scarlett...Oh, yeah!

She's damn high up on my list, LOL.
10.) Swamp Fox - 07/25/2016

Blasphemy!

Here's a question: If the comic book superhero nerds and the spaceship science fiction nerds got into a rumble at, say, Comic-Con, who'd win?

You, if you're smart enough to stay focused while the nerds are busy pretending to cut each other down with their WalMart light sabers.

12.) Swamp Fox - 07/25/2016
Excellent!

You actually beat me to it, LOL. I was definitely going looking for my Thor babe (whom I've showcased previously, but is well-worth seconds).
13.) Swamp Fox - 07/25/2016
For all the Norse mythology fans out there...LOL

Tell the one in yellow that she showed up on your Pokemon Go app so she's legally obligated to go home with you.

LOL...Excellent advice.

I'm thinking the one with the pink chainsaw could be pretty handy around the ol' ranch, too.

I would love to see the thought bubbles from those gals as the nerds ogle them.
17.) Swamp Fox - 07/26/2016

But I'm pretty sure that for a lot of them, a constant theme is "OMG, this boob job was SO worth it!":-)

Mostly they're thinking, "What color should I order my new Corvette Stingray in?"

It's still a grind though brother. "Have ya gotta light?"

If it wouldn't incriminate the guilty, I'd share a pic of Spiderman and the French Maid from when I was in my prime...LOL

Thanks. I kinda came to same conclusion using my eenie meenie minie mo method. I might try to catch it if it comes around again. I selected Captain America: The First Avenger but haven't made it all the way through yet. I think I have until tomorrow to finish it without being charged.
26.) Wild Bob - 07/27/2017
Dark Tower coming out soon. I don't know how it can compete with the books...But I'll have to go check it out anyway.
27.) Swamp Fox - 07/27/2017
Huh. This is scary. WB and I are on the same wavelength today. Here's a second thread I was thinking about reviving.

The Grand Budapest Hotel is worth seeing if you haven't already. I only caught it recently. Amusing, quirky comedy with great cinematography and an interesting story.

Yeah, it's a great flick. I also liked the fact that the lead role was played by Ralph Fiennes...a brilliant dramatic actor...and that Bill Murray (comedy box office gold) popped up in only a brief bit part.
29.) Swamp Fox - 07/27/2017
I had it on my DVR forever, and finally screwed up the courage to watch it. I think the reviews did it a disservice since all I remember them saying was how the film was "brilliant" and all the other artsy-fartsy words they could think of. That's a sure-fire way to get people like me to wince before watching. If I'd remembered whether they said it was funny, it would have been a lot shorter journey for me.

I don't know what film critics are thinking sometimes. I came across a ranking of the Spiderman movies not long ago. It ranked Amazing 2 higher than Spiderman 3 (which I thought was fine but others seem to rank low). Other than the last 30 minutes or so, leading into the final battle, I'd say Amazing 2 was "Crap!" and put it down as the worst of the bunch.

I haven't seen Homecoming yet. It gets great reviews from what I've seen. Not sure I'm ready for a juvenile Peter Parker as opposed to the traditional high school sophomore or thereabouts, but hey, it might work.

These rank the Spidey movies closer to my way of thinking.

And as far as Bill Murray goes, he is the man! Two of my favorite movies of all time are Lost in Translation and Rushmore. I have Rushmore on the DVR at this very moment, so I have that going for me, which is nice.
