...I have pairs of pants. In fact he has more total career Olympic medals (25, 21 of which are gold) than 86 countries have over the course of all they years they've been competing in the summer games. Only 59 countries have more medals than he does.

Think about that. He's ahead of more countries than he's behind in all-time medal count...and he's only been to 4 summer games.
2.) DParker - 08/11/2016
Oh, and....he's still got more events to go in this year's games.
3.) bluecat - 08/11/2016
What's your point?
4.) Swamp Fox - 08/11/2016
How are we doing in women's beach volleyball?
5.) Swamp Fox - 08/11/2016
And more importantly, should I be watching it?
6.) DParker - 08/11/2016
What's your point?
That I obviously need to buy more pants....duh.
7.) Swamp Fox - 08/11/2016
As far as I know, we lead in all-time medals in the Summer Olympics and are second behind Norway in the Winters. I think we're First and Second respectively in Golds.

Seems to me our system is doing pretty well compared to government-run or government-subsidized systems you hear people whining for every time the Olympics roll around.

Just think if your career success depended on the government noticing you...It didn't even notice its top diplomat was off the reservation with her soupcans-and-twine communications system.

Find some nice ones...and not too expensive. :-)

Yeah, the U.S. is way ahead in summer games medals, both total and gold...and really not that far behind Norway for the winter games total.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-time_Olympic_Games_medal_table

Of course, the breakup of the USSR complicates things a bit, but even adding in what the Russian Federation has done since then the U.S. still has a more-than-comfortable lead....and that's even with us boycotting the 1980 games.
10.) Swamp Fox - 08/11/2016
I didn't count up U.S.S.R. medals since I'm lazy, and it would be like digging up the stats for the Holy Roman Empire anyway. :wink

The numbers I saw had us about as far behind Norway as we lead the Ruskies. That is, not too far behind, and not too far ahead.

Just right, you might say.

You know, there are better versions of that story.

12.) Swamp Fox - 08/11/2016
You're obviously using a better search engine than I am...LOL
13.) Swamp Fox - 08/11/2016
Here's why no one watches the Olympics, especially the Summer Games:

Present sports:

archery
badminton
basketball
beach volleyball
boxing
canoe / kayak
cycling (track, road, mountain, BMX)
diving
equestrian (dressage, jumping and eventing)
fencing
field hockey
golf
gymnastics
handball
judo
modern pentathlon
rowing
rugby 7s
sailing
shooting
soccer
swimming
synchronized swimming
table tennis
taekwondo
tennis
track and field
triathlon
volleyball (indoor)
water polo
weightlifting
wrestling

Possible New Sports:

◦climbing
◦karate
◦roller sport
◦squash
◦wakeboard
◦wushu
◦surfing
◦dancing
◦bowling
◦netball

I'd say I might watch a few minutes of no more than five of the current events, and can't see watching anything in the new sports proposed.

Of course, you can't really easily watch modern pentathlon because either no one broadcasts it or it's pre-empted by some lunkhead jerking too much metal above his head, or a bunch of teenage girls jumping around on a gym mat.

But at least they got rid of croquet.

The link you used was to a web page as a whole, and not to an actual graphic image file from one (those end in .gif/.jpg/.png/etc). You can't always get such a link to a photo on a page because of the way they're coded sometimes.
19.) Swamp Fox - 08/11/2016
It's like sheep's bladders preventing earthquakes: I don't understand it, but I believe it.

If Michael Phelps wins tonight DP will have to buy another pair of sans-a-belt slacks.

My wife wishes. Much to her consternation, unless I'm attending a wedding, funeral or other must-dress-up event all I ever wear is Levis 505s. That makes it easy come Christmas time when relatives ask what I want/need all I have to say is "pants", with no need to be more specific than that.

Every day is casual Friday with me.

Forgot to post this last week. It's worth a chuckle. "Chemistry is not an exact science."

I wish I would have known this in school instead of providing my answers to 6 significant digits.

BTW, anyone notice how empty the stands were at the Track and Field events?

Yeah, that was pretty funny.

Digits? What digits? I had enough trouble with the letters. I don't think they let me advance to the digits.

I feel slightly cheated, but also relieved.

High school chemistry put the fear of God in me, and calculus was the lightning bolt that did me in.

I heard that comment last week and was nearly triggered...Almost, but I'm trying to hold up.
27.) Swamp Fox - 08/17/2016
This is how I remember chemistry class:

28.) bluecat - 08/17/2016
I bet you rubbed Linseed oil in the school cormorant too...
29.) Swamp Fox - 08/17/2016
"Oh, no, do share your little joke with the rest of the class..."

:wink

The more I think about it, the more I remember my chemistry teacher as a shorter Sonny Bono whose manner of speaking was much like John Cleese on coke, with a slight West Virginia twang.

I swear if I could hear John Cleese mispronounce my name and ask if Mr. Ross and I had the answer yet, in the right accent, it would take me straight back, and require years of therapy to correct.

Thank God! Just in time too...

Yeah, I suspect the chlorine wasn't bad...

You are allowed to use all the fingers from one hand and only one more finger from the other hand. That is, if you want to express your value to 6 significant digits.

Wetting your finger and holding it up also serves as a wind direction and velocity indicator.
38.) Swamp Fox - 08/18/2016
I wanted to hold a finger up in chemistry several times...
39.) bluecat - 08/18/2016
When I see white and black athletes hugging, holding hands and acting well...normal, I know it pisses Obama off and sets the whole democratic agenda back.
I wanted to hold a finger up in chemistry several times...
That finger was supposed to be used to stir the beakers full of toxic chemicals.

He is significantly digit challenged.

Did anyone see Justin Gatlin run last night? He ran the 200m in the prelims.

Was winning his heat so slowed up and looked around. Got passed by two other runners so didn't qualify for finals tonight.

One of my favorite Olympic moments.

I hate when that happens.

I'm proud to say I haven't watched one second of the Olympics. It's possible I'm saving myself for Women's Figure Skating, though. I wouldn't put it past me.
46.) bluecat - 08/30/2016

I didn't think the gymnastics portion of the Olympics was really all that good this time around.
