Because...you know...sometimes you just need to rest your cheek a little higher on the butt.

While in the process of choosing a replacement scout scope for the Mosin I've decided to also deal with the issue of non-existent cheek weld caused by the height at which I'm forced to mount said scope. To that end I'm looking at cheek pieces I can attach to the stock. I don't need one on any other rifle I have, so I have no experience with them and thought I'd see if anyone here has some experience and wisdom on the issue that they'd like to pass along. I need one that raises my cheek about 2" or so above the stock. A detachable ammo pouch would be nice, but isn't a must-have. Also, anything that requires any mods to the stock is a no-go.

I'm just starting my search, so the only attractive candidate I've found so far:

I can get that one for $15.94 at Amazon, but I'm not opposed to spending a little more for something better.

I've heard good things about these guys, even though sometimes their spelling leaves something to be desired.

Would generally recommend paying attention to the blackpowder/muzzleloading vendors in your search. Cheek pads are a pretty common request in that market.

That looks like some well-made stuff. Unfortunately it appears that their tallest risers only elevate you about 1-1.25" above the stock. I need a little more than that. But I like the idea of perusing sites geared to the BP/muzzle-loader markets. Thanks for the tip.

I've got some range bags made by voodootactical. There are very high quality.

That's good to hear. I always get a little apprehensive whenever something has "tactical" in the name.

I'd be interested to hear if the cheek piece slips over time. I can believe you would be able to cinch it down for a while ... just wonder if the velcro and fabric stretches, degrades or eventually gives way.

That's a concern of mine as well...though I assume that's at least partly addressed by the strap on the back that goes around the butt and appears as though it would keep the piece from slipping in the direction of the action. Given the fact that that's the direction of taper of the stock I further assume that would be the direction in which slippage is most likely. And if I have to make an occasional adjustment of the straps due to the aforementioned stretching, degradation, etc...I can live with that. In fact, at that price I could even live with having to throw it away and buy a new one every other season.
