Post your pics here to enter your success for the contest.

You can tell your story here or in a separate thread, but to receive points for your team, you should post the kill date and a pic with you, your deer, and your weapon here.

2.) crookedeye - 09/25/2016
looks like this contest is getting off to a good start already..i'm heading out in a couple weeks, i really need to start shooting my bow..lol
3.) crookedeye - 09/25/2016
i dont no if i should camp out or get a motel..the positives on camping is a big fire and toby keith and blake shelton cd's while sipping a whiskey..on the other hand a motel i get a tv and a shower and a soft lumpy bed.. decisions decisions...:-)
4.) billy b - 09/26/2016
Was BULLZ-I or Lisa in the contest?
5.) Swamp Fox - 09/26/2016
No, they didn't sign up.

BZ managed to duck past me so completely this year that he didn't even make Team 86...:wink

Nice!

What bows are you shooting these days, and how do you like them?

Love the reflective wraps!

Normally you finish first.

Congrats to both you!
9.) Deerslayer88 - 10/10/2016
Ok guys so I shot a big buck last evening. He was broadside at 35 yards. The hit was a way back after inspecting the arrow I concluded that it was 100% liver. The arrow was coated in dark to light red blood with a grainy texture. I decided to let him lay all night. Will be headed out to track around 12. I will keep everyone posted. Wish me luck it will possibly be my biggest bow kill
10.) Jon - 10/10/2016
Good luck, don't give up
11.) Swamp Fox - 10/10/2016
They can go quite a distance even if you come up on evidence of an axe murder. Then it may turn to drip, drip.

But you know all that.

Good luck.
12.) Deerslayer88 - 10/10/2016
So not looking very good. Tracked for 400-500 yards found a few beds then nothing. I have a tracker with a hound meeting me at 6:30 for one last ditch effort. Hopefully there is a happy ending to this story. If not it will be the first deer I have ever wounded with my bow in 18 years of bow hunting
13.) Swamp Fox - 10/10/2016
Did you bump him out of his first bed yourself last night, or did you back out right away?

It's my experience that if you can find his second bed (not easy very often) and he got out of it, he can be a LONG way away. Check your water sources (creeks, ditches, ponds), and keep an eye skinned for buzzards.
14.) bluecat - 10/12/2016

Team 4, on the ground.

I haven't come up with a way to get a pic of myself and deer in the pic at the same time. It was pitch black when I was taking that picture and actually had to push the shutter to get a light to come on and hopefully focus before the image was saved. Haven't figured it all out yet. Damn smart phones. When my headlamp was on, it messed with the lighting.

16.) Deerslayer88 - 10/12/2016
Ok guys so no luck. Very disappointed in myself. Regardless I have no one to blame but myself and i knew that it would happen to me eventually. So the whole story:

About 5:45 I caught first glimpse of him through the trees. After watching for 15 min he presented a shot at 35 yards. I immediately knew that I hit far back but was confident in a liver hit. After waiting for 1 hour I got down to confirm where I hit. Sure enough arrow was stuck right in the ground with dark blood on it. From this point I quietly stepped out of the woods and walked back to my truck. After sending the pic of my arrow to a few of my hunting buddies we all agreed it was definitely a liver hit deer and decided to let him lay all night. Fast forward to 11 am the next morning. After letting the deer lay for 16 hours we were confident we would find him. Immediately we found good blood and tracked it easily for the first 200yrds until he entered a crp field. From that point it got a little difficult. After another 50 yards we found his first bed, another 50 we found his second, and after that bed nothing. We searched the crp field for a good 2 hours in a grid pattern. We stumbled acroos his final bed where there was 4 separate piles of blood all very dark in color. At this point we decided to stop searching and call the blood hound. He wasnt able to get out until 6:30 that night. To make a long story short the hound quickly found the deers last bed and from that point just started tracking in circles. We found a few random spots of blood scattered through the crp field but nothing significant. After searching until 1 am we finally decided to call it. The tracker said the only logical explanation is that coyotes or some external source jumped the deer from the last bed we found. I want to make it clear that I am not blaming the loss of this deer on coyotes. This was 100% my fault. I should have made a better shot. Just chalk this one up to experience.
17.) Deerslayer88 - 10/12/2016
Congrats
18.) bluecat - 10/12/2016
You sure gave it a good try. You did all you could.
19.) Jon - 10/12/2016
Unfortunately, no matter how much you practice and perfect your skill, this will happen. Sorry you didn't find him, I understand the emotions.
20.) Swamp Fox - 10/12/2016
Well, if a dog team can't find a wounded deer, that says something either about the dog team or what your chances were on your own in the first place, or both.

You did everything right after the shot, it sounds like, and now you have the monkey off your back so nothing can ever go wrong again. :-) You know you're absolutely gonna drill the next one, now, right? :tu:

But I hope you eventually figure out what happened to him. It's hell not knowing, especially on a nice buck.

Ask Alexa...:-)

Or you could get DP to build you a remote camera shutter setter-offer with some of his Radio Shack gizmos...

That would beat running back and forth with the self-timer. :re: I haven't spent any time looking for something off-the-shelf like that, but I'll bet it's out there. If anyone has any ideas along those lines for either a smart phone or a dedicated camera, let me know. The last self-portrait I took for one of these contests nearly killed me, LOL

Otherwise:

I have a telescoping tripod that packs to maybe 12 or 15 inches long. Closer to 12, probably. I think they call it a tabletop tripod. It has a bit of weight to it, which is good unless you're into shaving ounces from your pack. Not expensive.

You could also make a spike monopod out of PVC and various items, including plastic hardware store clamps and Ram Mounts, including camera balls and cradles. I can throw some stuff out there that I either use or have considered, if there's any interest.

Remember, as DP says, I'm the Executive Vice President of Mounting Stuff, or something... :wink

I don't know what everybody else has been up to, but I haven't even had a chance to get out yet. I do think that the hunting has been a little slow around here. This past weekend and this week will be a wash, LOL.

I know of a couple of pretty good bucks that have been killed in the last month, but maybe not the usual amount (no great pictures, though). Things should pick up around here starting in a week or so.

As usual Dan, lots of show, very little go on here.

I could post some scouting camera pics from this year if it makes you feel better. I've only been out once so far, rains every weekend here.

Last Sat. afternoon I shot a small racked giant buck, he weighed almost 230 on the hoof. I was by myself and could not get pics with my gear but here is the buck. He is a main frame 8 and is at least 7 or 8 years old, his face was completely gray. I was lucky enough to but a heart shot on him, he blasted out "wfo", and after about 40 yards he jumped a big cactus patch and when he landed, his front legs folded and he did a 180, then never moved again. I'll post pa pic as soon as I can get it into photobucket.

36.) Swamp Fox - 10/27/2016
Maybe, as a swabbie, and a fine figure of a man, you can appreciate this.

"Weights Fully Out"

Jay Leno on some old engine technology:

Also, consider that petroleum had first been successfully drilled only around 1850. So to lubricate machines in the pre-oil days, they would slaughter a couple of pigs, rub pig grease on the moving parts and then enjoy pork chops for lunch. When the machine would start to tighten up, some guy would holler, "Hey! Get me another pig!" Fortunately, by the time my engine was built, oil was the lubricant of choice, so we don't have to worry about trichinosis.

The engine's speed is governed by ball-shaped spinning weights. The faster the engine goes, the farther the two balls extend away from each other, due to centrifugal force. When the balls are fully extended, the engine is at top speed. So when people say that they're "running balls out," there's no sexual -- or even masculine -- connotation. It's just a reference to the governor. And a really neat thing about really big engines, like some Wrights, is that for a good 15 minutes after the steam stops, the engine keeps running -- thanks to its immense flywheel.

[...].

There's no reason why a garage full of old cars can't be environmentally responsible, even if it means having to go back more than a century for the technology.

This 1870 stationary steam engine has a new job -- helping free Jay from the power grid.

Shot this stud Sunday Morning. It was a very slow morning (at first). Got into the stand at 6:30 and didnt have my first deer sighting until 8:15 when three does came trough getting chased by a small buck. After they ran off the woods went silent again until about 9:30 when this big boy came strolling through. Nothing crazy about the story he just walked down teh same trail the does were on and i stoped him at 28 yrds and made a perfect heart shot. He ran 40 yards and piled up within eye sight. He ended up scoring 155" on the dot as an 11pt.

Sad to say, the 2016 HC Whitetail Contest has come to its close. On the off chance that Scoring Committee Chair Bluecat knows something that I don't about late entries or behind-the-scenes intrigue, I'll let him announce the winners and this year's Recipients of Ridicule.
