The "Voice Purchasing" option on your Alexa account provides for a PIN you can create, and which must be spoken to verify anything ordered through your Echo/Dot/other Alexa device. So mom either didn't enable that, or the little offender who "accidentally" bought this stuff became privy to it.

There's been a lot of hysteria/paranoia over this lately, especially following the recent murder investigation in AR in which the Bentonville PD obtained a (completely worthless) search warrant from a local court for any/all recordings from the suspect's Echo that may have been uploade to Amazon's servers. (Amazon has told the Bentonville PD to go pound sand, citing customer privacy and the non-binding nature of the warrant from a different state.) But while I understand the concern it is ultimately much ado about nothing. The Echo/Dot maintain an internal buffer of the most recent 60 seconds of audio data...data goes absolutely nowhere unless/until the "wake word" you've selected is spoken. At that point the light ring on the device glows bright blue, letting you know that you've activated the device's command mode, and whatever brief audio follows the wake word is then uploaded to Amazon servers for analysis and, if said servers can make heads or tails of what you've said, acting upon. There is no surreptitious eavesdropping or data collection going on. And that's not just taking Amazon's word for it. This is all easily verifiable using network sniffers and other analysis tools...which has been done to death.
Now, if you'll excuse me, there is a black helicopter hovering over my backyard and a group of rather loud and insistent gentlemen knocking on my door....

Speaking of "what could go wrong", I needed to replace the deadbolt on my front door last month...so I seized the opportunity (and a killer sale from Home Depot) to add more tech for its own sake and replaced all of the hardware with this Z-Wave deadbolt setup from Schlage:

I can honestly say that if you lock yourself out of your house and your tech support is with AT&T/Directv, you might as well just burn the place down and call a realtor.

There's a pretty funny video out there where a little kid (under 6) asks Alexa to play a particular song (which I don't recognize since I am not in the 4-to-34 music demographic) and somehow Alexa thinks he's asking about porn. Needless to say, hilarity ensues.
Apparently it's not staged. Not sure how high on the NSFW scale it rates since I didn't have time to watch the whole thing, but the parents' quick reaction is chuckle-worthy...or at least I thought so.

I believe this one is going to end up being something of an urban myth. None of the current speech recognition products work that way...and the Echo/Alexa (which is the one that ABC News is claiming was the dialer) isn't capable of placing phone calls.

Yeah, I can tell you with absolutely zero doubt that this version of events is completely bogus...even ignoring the obvious problem with the sheriff basing his conclusion on hearing the victim saying, "Alexa, call 911" during the 911 call (if he heard that on the recorded call, that means the call was already in progress when she allegedly said it.) The Echo (or any of the other devices in that line) and the Alexa service simply don't have that capability, and aren't likely to anytime soon. You can just imagine the potential liability nightmare that would create for Amazon.
And so far I haven't seen any actual statements by the victim saying that it was an Echo device that initiated the call. All I've read are assumptions/conclusions from the sheriff to that effect. I'm open to being proven wrong on this, but so far it just sounds like a conclusion that was jumped to by a law enforcement guy who doesn't know anything about the technology involved, and was lapped up and regurgitated by lazy journalists because it's a really good story.
