Do you have to burn your clothes after a session like that?

Nothing says good management like an endless supply of rats. Political joke in 3...2...1...

I'm thinking photochromic lenses might be of benefit.
11.) Swamp Fox - 01/05/2017
When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school, it's a wonder I can think at all. And though my lack of education hasn't hurt me none, I can read the writing on the wall.

I'm trying to be extra good this year so Santa might have a shot at talking himself into bringing me some really good photochromed fishing glasses before I die.

I'm hoping photochromic lenses are better than they were back in the day when they first (?) came out and I had a really far-out pair, but I haven't had a chance to give any modern stuff a test run yet.
12.) bluecat - 01/05/2017
+ 3 for Simon reference.
13.) Swamp Fox - 01/05/2017
Alright, three more points tonight and you have to cut me off, okay?

I'm trine to pace myself...
14.) DParker - 01/05/2017
Speaking of sunglasses....

Back in July I bought a pair of polarized reader SGs (with bifocals built into the lenses) via Amazon for $48 (I no longer spend real money on sunglasses, as every time I have I've invariably lost or destroyed them in short order). One of the selling points for me was the fact that the lenses are removable, allowing me to replace just them rather than the frames to when the inevitable came to pass...or so I assumed. Over the course of the next 5 months I managed to scratch and ding the lenses enough to make me want to replace them, but searching the vendor's website and the broader intertubez turned up no ability to acquire said replacements. So I sent a message to the vendor's customer support asking about how I might go about buying said replacement lenses from them and supplying my Amazon order # just so they could verify that I was in fact a customer. To my surprise, I received a very quick response explaining that they don't stock the lenses as a replacement part, so they'd just send me a whole new pair of glasses gratis...with no need to send my old ones back.

About a week later the replacement pair showed up, including a new case and lens cloth just as if I'd bought them. I was really impressed with this at first, until I gave it a moment's thought and realized how ridiculous their profit margin must be on these things if they can afford to just send out whole new complete products when they receive a question about buying replacement lenses.

So it just goes to show that you can't please some people no matter what.
15.) Swamp Fox - 01/05/2017
LOL...

Until you get into the upper end makers and models, I don't think there's any money (cost) in the frame. And under $100 it's probably not worth stocking straight lenses for replacement vs. offering free or discounted complete replacement. People just throw stuff away in this brave new world we're in, unless they grew up in the Depression, or their parents did...LOL

I used to be a big fan and user of Gargoyles (mid-to-high two figures to mid 100's). They used to do a lens refinishing service which I think they gave up on. I think they still do a decent business in replacement lenses for some models.

But below that price point, I'm sure it's just easier for most vendors to send out complete spectacles. It's just a matter if they charge anything or not.
16.) DParker - 01/05/2017
But below that price point, I'm sure it's just easier for most vendors to send out complete spectacles. It's just a matter if they charge anything or not.
Aye, there's the rub. I would have assumed they'd at least charge me enough to cover shipping + something to partially defray the amount that sending a whole new product package would cut into their margins. But the fact that they can skip that and send me the whole thing for free, no questions asked, tells me that said margin is larger than one might otherwise expect...even given Chinese slave labor.
17.) Swamp Fox - 01/05/2017
LOL...I'm sure you're right. Having used low-end glasses through mid-range and creeping up on to upper end, I've always been amazed/outraged/amused at how much money people are getting charged for mediocre or even poor quality.

Especially when people think they're getting some kind of a "performance lens" just because of the brand name. That's a real hoot unless you spend more than a few bucks, and are careful to choose what you need vs. assuming anything made by brand X is gonna be awesome for whatever you're doing.

BTW: If anyone has any comments about this general topic and wants to give me their two cents for perspective, which would help for a project I am working on, please shoot me a PM. Comments on quality, lens performance, lens color, durability, customer service,, etc. The whole shebang. Thx.

30.) Swamp Fox - 01/09/2017
Based on what I've seen in some videos, that might be the best looking part I've seen so far, LOL.

There's a boxy Jeep that I think it also borrows from. One of the 4-door Wranglers, I think.

Speaking of screwing up body styles, I'm calling out Jeep. I haven't seen one that I've liked in several years, maybe more. (The little Wranglers excepted. Also at least one of the Rubicons, but I don't think they make those any more.)

As Trump would say: Sad.
31.) Swamp Fox - 01/09/2017
I could get behind some of these designs.

You don't see many Raptors on the road for some reason, but I think that is one of the sharpest-looking trucks ever (at least the originals or early version that I know) so anything they borrow from that is probably a winner.
32.) DParker - 01/11/2017
It's always dangerous when my wife runs into the grocery store for something and leaves me in the car in the parking lot, because then I get bored, whip out the phone and peruse Amazon.com looking for stuff that I don't really need. Sunday was no exception, but at least I got off cheap...

It showed up today...though I got one on black. Apparently this was a real beer from a craft brewery in Indiana (Sun King Brewing). Sadly, they're no longer making it. Yes, that's right. This is an EX-beer.

Looks good (even for candyass red) but forgot the two rear doors...
35.) Swamp Fox - 01/11/2017
Red isn't my favorite color, but Ford Red always has been one of them.

I've also always preferred two-door trucks and SUV's to four, aesthetically. Practically, they usually work for me, although sometimes they're a bit of a pain. I do sometimes these days have a higher need to carry passengers than I used to, so I'm keeping my eyes peeled for something I like for that.

In the meantime, I'm in the lead with the steed, and it's "Follow me."

40.) Swamp Fox - 01/11/2017
Here's something: Seems like Monty Python images on Yahoo are largely coded "with privacy" all of a sudden, especially Holy Grail and Dead Parrot images. Not so if you do a Google search (although I don't know how to actually see the address with them, vs. just copying it in preparation to paste).

I used to be able to pick up MP images on Yahoo very easily. Now it's a huge chore. I checked my display settings and everything seems okay, plus I've never changed them in the first place. I haven't checked for anything other than Python to see if this issue applies elsewhere as well.

It depends on the source. Some of the images you're seeing are the result of more than just your browser acting on a direct link to the image file (*.jpg, *.gif, *.png, etc), which causes problems.
51.) Swamp Fox - 01/11/2017
On Yahoo, if you click on the image you then have an option to click on "Properties" to see all the dirt. Then you copy/paste the image address from that window to here.

I guess in the past when I've tried to display an image that said "with privacy," it failed here. So I got the idea that if it said "with privacy" it was a lost cause automatically.

Now that this has been debunked, apparently, I'm not sure how to tell ahead of time if an image address is going to fail here or not. I don't even know how to see the image address or "protocol" or anything else using Google, LOL. Whatever I'm using there (Chrome?... "Just plain Google"? --I have no idea---LOL) just gives you an option to "copy address" without actually displaying it to you or otherwise "describing" the image.

But my favorite part was when the honorable suit from Rhode Island (Sheldon Whitehouse, D, naturally) was "grilling" the EPA nominee over "climate change" (whatever that meant to him at the moment) and thought he had a gotcha with a big poster board showing campaign contributors to the nominee's political career. It highlighted the ones which were involved in energy production.

Production from oil, coal and gas, that is; not hot air, cold breezes, or the healing rays of the sun.

You know, the dreaded fossil fuels. When he says it, though, it sounds like a bad thing.

But who doesn't like fossils?

Anyway, the poster board seemed like a big production, and signaled a major collaboration between his staff of 23-year-old interns and the local Kinko's, so I'm sure he was proud of it. He seemed like it anyway.

Paraphrasing here:

"You've taken a lot of money from fossil fuel companies."

"Yes, and I've sued a few of them, too."

"Name one you've sued up there. " Sheldon points to the board.

"ExxonMobil."

"Really!?" [Exact quote...LOL] "Well, my time has expired...."

Yes, really.

Really busted.

Tune in at 3:45 if you're not interested in the lead-up.

LOL! Now that was funny. I also liked how he stumbled around the rhetoric that has become so torturously euphemistic that he described the energy companies as entities that have been, "devoted to fighting climate change". Wait...what? Isn't that what you've been screaming for people to do all this time?
63.) Swamp Fox - 01/19/2017

69.) Swamp Fox - 01/20/2017
LOL...Freakin' hysterical...In both senses of the word.

I am stuck at my desk this afternoon but can have TV in the background---Should I watch liberal pity party or will it be triggering?

BC: I am going with diaper rash.

Here's a serious question: Are Dems still doing the stupid safety pin thing or did that backfire on them sufficiently?

70.) DParker - 01/20/2017
Beats me. I'm just surprised and disappointed by two things:

I'm surprised that Trump's speech didn't end up being the train wreck I was half expecting.

I'm disappointed that Hillary didn't show up drunk.
71.) bluecat - 01/20/2017
+ 5 for both of you.
72.) DParker - 01/20/2017
Well, the markets are up and I'm not seeing any fighter-bombers or attack choppers in the air. So far, so good.
73.) bluecat - 01/20/2017
The bonfires are a nice touch though, don't you think?
74.) Swamp Fox - 01/20/2017
LOL...You know, the protesters and rioters make a lot of noise in a mob, but you pull any 20 of them aside individually and maybe *one* of them will be able to string three coherent sentences together about why he's out there.

*****

I didn't see the speech, but I read it. Twice. How you get anything of 1930's Germany out of that, I have no idea.

Maybe if you know less than zero about 1930's Germany...

I'm guessing we'll soon start hearing from all the Journalism and Communications majors who haven't taken a history class since high school --where the topic probably hasn't been taught for 40 years, if it ever was--but who will suddenly be experts in that era's America First movement.

*****

There was a good shot of Michelle 0 and Bill Clinton in the stands after the speech. I realize their team got trounced, but they looked extra sour even so. I didn't see much of Hillary. Probably for the best that she wasn't drunk or Bill would have been in real trouble. You know he was checking out chicks up there.

I read someone on another forum say, (and I'm paraphrasing here) "You know, if I was capable of setting my politics aside for an evening...Bill Clinton would be a blast to play poker and hang out with."

I really couldn't disagree with the sentiment.
84.) Swamp Fox - 01/20/2017
The sentiment is one thing, but I'd have to disagree on the facts.

First of all, you'd never know where his cigars have been.

Just as important, people have forgotten or aren't aware what a nasty piece of work Bill Clinton was and is when the light gets shined on him. I'm not just talking about the lying and corruption. He has a mean streak that's not hard to see in numerous videos that I'm not inclined to pull up right now, because I'm savoring liberal tears too much today, and reminders of Bill are just a buzzkill.
85.) DParker - 01/20/2017
LOL! I'm not saying he's a good guy...just that I bet he'd be a party animal. You know, kind of like Darth Vader being a more fun and interesting character than Obi Wan.

1:45 PM today was a great moment in American history, as Barry "Brick" Obama went wheels-up from Joint Base Andrews and flew off toward the Left Coast, and one can only hope, into the sunset.

He could have left this way, with his head down as it should be, but that would be a blow to his ego and a missed opportunity to stick the American people with the bill for a massively expensive plane ride one more time:

Trump returns Churchill bust to the Oval Office

President Trump has returned a bust of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill to the Oval Office, which had been removed by his predecessor in 2009.

Reporters first noticed that the bust had been placed back in the room on Friday, just as Trump was signing a series of executive orders at the Resolute desk.

Obama had moved the bust to the White House residence during his first few days in office and later installed separate busts of Martin Luther King Jr. and President Lincoln in its place.

A spokesperson for British Prime Minister Theresa May confirmed last week that Trump had personally asked if England would loan the bust of Churchill to the U.S. once he took office.

Bill Clinton's State of the Union speech 1995.

In his remarks, Clinton said that Americans had a right to oppose illegal immigration. Illegal aliens take jobs from Americans and “impose burdens” on taxpayers by taking welfare benefits, he said.

“All Americans, not only in the states most heavily affected but in every place in this country, are rightly disturbed by the large numbers of illegal aliens entering our country,” Clinton said during the speech. “The jobs they hold might otherwise be held by citizens or legal immigrants. The public service they use impose burdens on our taxpayers.”

‘That’s why our administration has moved aggressively to secure our borders more by hiring a record number of new border guards, by deporting twice as many criminal aliens as ever before, by cracking down on illegal hiring, by barring welfare benefits to illegal aliens,” he continued.

Clinton went on to assure Congress that in his forthcoming budget proposal he would “try to do more to speed the deportation of illegal aliens who are arrested for crimes, to better identify illegal aliens in the workplace as recommended by the commission headed by former Congresswoman Barbara Jordan.”

We are a nation of immigrants. But we are also a nation of laws. It is wrong and ultimately self-defeating for a nation of immigrants to permit the kind of abuse of our immigration laws we have seen in recent years, and we must do more to stop it.

Well, I'll be damned. Today is apparently "Life Without Immigrants Day", so declared by....somebody....in which immigrants across the U.S. are supposed to "strike" (just not show up for work) to teach us all some sort of lesson about how we should stop complaining about illegal immigration. In addition to nobody I know even noticing any impact at all, I walked around my entire office, where the staff is roughly 50% immigrants (legal...in fact our CEO is an immigrant) and told them they were all supposed to go home and be on strike. Without exception they told me, "Hey, I've got work to do, and a paycheck to collect...go away."
Three militants loyal to the Islamic State group (ISIS) have been killed by wild boars as they planned to ambush Iraqi tribesmen opposed to the group, according to a local anti-ISIS leader.

At least eight ISIS fighters had reportedly taken cover among dense reeds in Iraq's al-Rashad region, about 55 miles southwest of Kirkuk, in preparation for a surprise attack on local anti-ISIS tribesman when a herd of wild boars attacked the jihadists on Sunday, killing three. The militants likely disturbed the notoriously short-tempered animals, said Sheikh Anwar al-Assi, a chief of the local Ubaid tribe and head of the group of local tribesmen who took up arms after ISIS took control of the nearby town of Hawija.
TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- A man wielding a sword reportedly robbed a downtown Topeka bank Tuesday morning.

Authorities say the suspect held up the Bank of America, 700 SW Topeka Blvd., around 9:30 a.m. Police not say how much money he may have taken.

The suspect has been taken into custody and was taken to the Law Enforcement Center, Topeka police say.

Shortly before the robbery, an officer reported seeing a suspicious man carrying a sword near the 10th and Topeka intersection. Police have not confirmed if that was the same person.

NEW LEMUR SPECIES NAMED AFTER JOHN CLEESE
by Hans ten Cate
Sunday, 20 November 2005

Avahi cleesei weighs around a kilogram and eats leaves and buds. It is classified as "endangered" by the World Conservation Union. The lemur belongs to the wollmaki group, but is set apart from its nearest relation by its lighter fur colour and facial markings.

The media has been aflurry with reports that a new species of lemur, discovered in a remote part of Madagascar, has been named after John Cleese. The news was first reported in the 12 November 2005 issue of New Scientist magazine.

[...]

"I was really touched, and indeed, honoured when Urs Thalmann told me they would like to name the lemur after me," Cleese told a Swiss newspaper. "I'm absurdly fond of the little creatures, and if I had to show any of my programmes to St Peter, upon my arrival at the Pearly Gates, I think I would show him my documentary made about them in Madagascar.

[...]

Urs Thalmann led the discovery of Cleese's woolly lemur in Madagascar
The small woolly Avahi cleesei has been classified as endangered by the World Conservation Union. Thalmann also told the New Scientist magazine that long legs are not the only attribute lemurs share with Cleese. "Woolly lemurs can't really walk - but they do enjoy silly jumps," he said.

The Science of Monty Python?

This is not the first time that a Python has been honored by a scientific finding in their name.

In 1985, two anthropologists, Meredith Smith and Michael Plane, discovered a fossil of a 15 million year-old python at a site near the Sleigh River in Queensland, Australia. They named the seemingly new genus of snake montypythonoides riversleighensis. The snake was later reclassified by Arnold Kluge in 1993 to be synonymous with morelia spilota, an Australian carpet python still in existence.

In 1997, an asteroid was named after Monty Python. Asteroid 13681, officially named Monty Python, was discovered 7 August 1997 by Miloš Tichý and Zdenek Moravec at Klet Observatory near Ceské Budejovice, Czech Republic. The asteroid will make its next closest approach to Earth on 24 April 2006 (and will pass within nearly 1.87 Astronomical Units from Earth).

A series of asteroids have also been named after the individual members of Monty Python. In 1992 and 1993, an effort called the Uppsala-ESO Survey of Asteroids and Comets was undertaken to find previously undetected comets in the vicinity of Jupiter. They found thousands. The six asteroids in question were discovered on 17 and 21 March 1993 by Swedish astronomers at the European Southern Observatory in Chile. The asteroids were each named after the Pythons, in alphabetical order:

Grahamchapman - Asteroid 9617 (1993 FA5) - discovered 17 March 1993
Johncleese - Asteroid 9618 (1993 FQ8) - discovered 17 March 1993
Terrygilliam - Asteroid 9619 (1993 FS9) - discovered 17 March 1993
Ericidle - Asteroid 9620 (1993 FU13) - discovered 17 March 1993
Michaelpalin - Asteroid 9621 (1993 FT26) - discovered 21 March 1993
Terryjones - Asteroid 9622 (1993 FV26) - discovered 21 March 1993

I had a scrapbook going of news clippings of the case when I was a kid. Don't ask me why. Looking back on it, it was a pretty grisly thing to be interested in. The only other thing I remember pasting in those old notebooks (black and white hard-covered "Composition" notebooks---Remember them?) was Minnesota Vikings stories and pics, and pictures of motorcycles, LOL.

It's kind of amazing that with Manson all tee'd up, California picks that moment to do away with the death penalty and the U.S. Supreme Court makes the state's successful referendum to reinstate a moot point. Not sure why there was a need to commute the sentence to life with the possibility of parole.

Not aware of procedural or due process issues with the trial that would interfere with letting the original sentence stand for a future "super-duper court-approved" execution. The only reason for such a move that I can think of is some requirement for the possibility of parole. That seems inappropriate after a just, clean death penalty has been handed down, particularly in this case.

Once Manson's death sentence was commuted, there was no way to reinstate it. I have to believe there's some legal eagle reason that has to be so, because that doesn't make a whole lot of sense on the face of it, either.

Other than taking Manson's word for it that living was harder than dying-- that he preferred to die-- the legal system failed the families, law enforcement and the justice system in this case.

Ms. Lerner and Holly Paz, her deputy at the IRS, filed documents in court Thursday saying tapes and transcripts of depositions they gave in a court case this year must remain sealed in perpetuity, or else they could spur an enraged public to retaliate.

I read the Durham story first and saw their notice about phasing out comments sections, then didn't look when I read the Raleigh story. I'll put the uneven treatment down to incompetence and unwillingness to pay for staff rather than something as high-sounding as they describe.

I only have a surface idea of what Disqus is all about. I read that the comments sections were "shifting to Facebook." Why would one want to go to Facebook to comment when the story is right there on ... you know... the news site? They're complaining about moderating the news site, so they must be unable to moderate Facebook AND the news site? Seems like a FB comments section would be the stankier cessspool. Every FB-eligible comments section I can think of rolled quickly downhill after opening up to "FB." Maybe it's really Disqus I'm complaining about?

A shame either way.

Insert "That's not how it works" meme here if appropriate ... LOL

Democratic National Committee was broadcasting propaganda film calling Ted "Leave 'Em Moist and Breathless" Kennedy a champion of women's rights at presidential convention in 2012, and Dems only just now getting around to calling out Bill Clinton for rape and skirt-chasing, so what's the rush about a little abusive bureaucracy, perjury and obstruction of justice?

Today's Democratic Party, ladies and gentlemen:

316.) bluecat - 03/09/2018
My understanding of the situation is that once Trump got information that the money from safari's doesn't end up in conservation and the meat doesn't end up feeding the village people, I believe he put a moratorium on the importation of elephant mounts. Correct me if I'm wrong. Michael Savage was talking about it on his radio program a few days ago. I believe Michael even helped influence the decision.

Democrats have to hate and put down what they don't know or understand. That's what they do.

You are different, therefore, I hate you and am superior to you.
317.) Swamp Fox - 03/10/2018
I wouldn't trust anything Michael Savage says on hunting, period. I haven't listened to him in years and I was never anywhere close to regular, but when "Michael Savage" and "hunting" are on the SAT, my answer is "bleeding heart."

The issue of big game hunting in Africa is complicated. Some countries do it right in regard to "sensitive" species, and others are apparently not so angelic.

I will try to find a few items to let you know where I'm coming from.

Also note that any threat to elephants is PRIMARILY coming from poaching, not regulated hunting, no matter how poorly administered.
The good news is that a perfectly healthy harmless animal was put down.
This is a problem with taking certain injured or orphaned animals like coons, foxes and coyotes to rehab centers. They will put them down automatically.

We had a situation here where Animal Control essentially raided a home and killed a pet raccoon because someone ratted its owner out for posts on social media.

It's photoshopped, LOL, but the raccoon was mooching food on its hind legs. How can you resist?
380.) bluecat - 04/14/2018
Can't they test those animals for rabies?
381.) Swamp Fox - 04/14/2018
I think the only test they trust is a brain test, which means killing the animal.

But they will kill a "vector species" animal that shows absolutely no signs as a matter of policy.

If you take a baby raccoon, fox, skunk or coyote to a shelter here, you are signing its death warrant. I know groundhogs are a vector species in some areas, but we don't have a lot here. Possums get a pass, I think, because my understanding is they are pretty rabies-resistant.

No, I didn't bother watching it....because the previews gave me exactly the same impression that you just described from the actual show. One of the things that I like most about Forged in Fire is that they do a pretty good job of keeping that sort of goofy crap to a tolerable minimum. And even then, some of the goofiness is actually looked forward to (ie, "Eet weell keel").

One of the other things that I've come to enjoy about watching FiF is that, now that I've watched for quite a while I've learned just enough to be able to spot when a contestant is making...or is about to make...one of the common mistakes (like quenching in water, time management errors, etc). It adds to the immersive quality, and provides you with little "Oh no!" bits of tension...along with giving you an even greater appreciation for their skill when they manage to recover from something like that.
396.) bluecat - 04/18/2018

Talk about a gun-free zone ...

Check this out:
The seven inmates killed in the fighting Sunday night and Monday morning at Lee Correctional Institution have been identified as:

[...]

Eddie Casey Jay Gaskins ...

Deputies responded to a home near Moncks Corner after the mother of Gaskins' two children called 911, according to the Berkeley Observer.

Gaskins, who showed up uninvited at the woman's home, threatened her with a shotgun. After the woman fled, Gaskins attempted to flood her home by clogging the drain and leaving the water running on full blast, according to the newspaper.

He had a long criminal history dating back to 2004 in Berkeley County, including more than two dozen arrests on charges such as domestic violence, burglary and possession of cocaine.

Gaskins lived in Bethera, an unincorporated community in Berkeley County. He had two sisters and four children, according to his cousin Cassandra Gaskins.

"Eddie was an outgoing person who enjoyed country life. He loved hunting, fishing and his family ... He will definitely be missed by many," Cassandra said in a message to The State.

Mayor de Blasio and workers from the Housing Authority were outwitted by the rodent during a press event at a Bushwick project when it triumphantly escaped their clutches as they attempted to demonstrate a new high-tech extermination technique.

Like a scene from “Tom and Jerry,” workers fruitlessly tried to stomp on the agile rodent when it scurried from a hole in which dry ice had been dropped in an effort to control the furry pests.

One worker even swung a shovel at the plucky rat in a comical whack-a-mole routine.

But no one could lay a hand on the tiny animal, which dodged all the would-be rat-slayers at the Bushwick Houses and scampered to safety at a playground on Humboldt Street.
NEW YORK -- Goodbye beauty, hello brains - the Miss America pageant is getting a makeover.

Miss America has decided to cut its swimsuit competition, adding that it will no longer judge contestants based on their physical appearance.

"We are no longer a pageant," Gretchen Carlson, the chair of the Board of Trustees for the Miss America Organization, said Tuesday morning on Good Morning America. "We are a competition."
