A local craft brewery with some truly excellent beers is having an all-you-can-eat Mardi Gras-ish bug boil in their tap room from noon-3pm today. 200 tickets for the event were sold, and I managed to get 2...for my son and I. 6%-12% ABV brews and 200 people trying to snarf as many spicy crustaceans as they can in 3 hours. Things could get heated. If I don't check back in by 4pm send the TX Rangers (the guys with badges and Stetsons, not the choke-happy ball team) in to find us.

There's still time to grab some ziplock bags and run to Cabelas for a photographer's vest. They call theirs a Safari Vest. Sixty bucks.

If you can't recoup your materials investment, gas money and lower the per-crawfish price of admission significantly by stuffing your pockets, you've managed both to have forgotten your youth AND the skills necessary for an active retirement.

This is weird: Immediately after I posted that, this came on the DVR'd program I was watching:

'Airport jacket' lets you wear 33 pounds of stuff

Production is waiting on crowd-sourcing money, but maybe there's hope for next year's boil....
4.) DParker - 02/25/2017
This was round #3, at about 1.5 lbs per container, and I just went back for #4, so I'm ~6 lbs in.

They yell, "Norm" every time I go back now.

Those look like some hefty bugs.

That spice hits twice ya know.
That spice hits twice ya know.
Oh, yeah...if there's one thing in this world that I do know, it's that. I'm estimating that the festivities will commence some time around midnight or shortly thereafter.

Totally worth it.

LOL...

So...How was the night on the couch?

It wouldn't have been so bad if it weren't for all of the snickering the dogs did.

LOL

Happy birthday to me. Blanton's has become nigh impossible to find at the local booze stores unless you have inside info and are there the moment they unpack new stock. So my son got resourceful and ordered KY hooch by way of the UK (https://www.masterofmalt.com). Since he was going to pay ridiculous shipping anyway he went for a bottle each of the regular and Gold editions.

Holy crap, are these good. I have a couple of 2.25" thick 2.75 lb cowboy-cut ribeyes that are going to complement them nicely.
11.) Swamp Fox - 02/28/2017
That seems an excellent way to celebrate Mardis Gras, assuming you waited 'til today and were not having a late supper yesterday.

And let me guess: Hipster doofuses are causing a premium bourbon shortage?
And let me guess: Hipster doofuses are causing a premium bourbon shortage?
Well, I don't know that all (or even most) of the blame can be rightly laid at the feet of hipsters. A large share of it belongs on old farts like me who learned to appreciate this kind of stuff somewhat late in life, as increases in disposable income and kids moving out on their own have permitted. Oh, and I also largely blame Rayland Givens and his fellow fictitious product-placement-happy U.S. Marshalls...

But I just thought it was funny that I live about 860 miles driving distance from the Buffalo Trace distillery where this stuff is made, but it had to travel over 4,000 miles from there to the UK and then another ~5,000 miles back this direction to get to my house.

But you raise in interesting issue regarding hipsters...

It seems to me that the word "hipster" has come to be used to refer (inaccurately) to two very different groups of people. On the one hand you have the lazy, entitlement-minded douchebags who sit around doing stupid crap because it's "ironic" (drinking PBR, etc), mindlessly bad-mouthing societal norms for no articulable reason and generally not contributing to society in any way. On the other, you have a group who...while they often bear an aesthetic similarity to the first group...are actually ambitious individuals who have an appreciation for the finer things in life and and entrepreneurial spirit to go along with that. They also have a healthy respect for hard work and things like old world craftsmanship. These are the young 20-30-somethings who are opening craft breweries and producing excellent versions thereof, starting businesses manufacturing high-end cast iron cookware, etc. But they have a tendency to wear flannel, sport tattoos and beards that make them look like they should be pitching for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and as a result often get unfairly labeled "hipsters".

At least, that's my take on the matter. Carry on.

+ 5 for the creative description and for reminding me of one of my favorite Monty Python skits.

Yeah, that was Eric Idle at his best. Even more impressive was his ability to recite that spiel from memory while being chased through the audience at the Hollywood Bowl performance of that sketch. Unfortunately I can't find that clip anywhere. It's brilliant though.

That guy guides for Rick Steves now.

In case that's hard to read on whatever device one is tethered to, it says:

ATTENTION HIPSTER DOOFUSES: Sorry about that, but it’s not easy getting the attention of people who reject mainstream consumerism like billionaires reject tax overhaul. Here’s the thing: Do you ever wake up in your designer platform bed in your urban loft, shuffle over to your espresso machine and wonder: Is this all there is? Day after day of wearing ironic vintage tee shirts and searching the Internet for nu rave techno rap bands from Uzbekistan? Don’t you wish you could let your androgynously cut hair down, wear some not-quite-so-painfully-skinny jeans and kick back and watch the (legal in all 50 states version of) grass grow? Not to get all marketingy, but at Urban Eatery you can take a break from looking vaguely disinterested in everything while wearing your favorite organic fedora. We use fresh ingredients from local farms and offer free valet parking—and free is nice if you have one of those hipster liberal arts degrees. So why not take some time out of your busy schedule of wrestling with existential angst and drop by Urban Eatery. After a hard week of conforming to nonconformity, you’ve earned it.
That guy guides for Rick Steves now.
When we were planning our Italy trip we picked up one of Steves' guide books. The only thing I recall from it was this succinct description of Julius Caesar from the section on Rome:
"Caesar was a people's favorite. He conquered Gaul (France), then sacked Egypt, then impregnated Cleopatra. He defeated rivals and made them his allies. He gave great speeches. Chicks dug him."
College texts could use a little bit more of that kind of writing.

So basically a modern day Chuck Norris.

"Thwow him to the floor, Centurian."
