1.) Swamp Fox - 03/04/2017
Sign up here if you'd like to play in this year's turkey contest, which will be done the same same way as in the past. That is to say we'll have teams, bonus points for kills with vertical bows, and scoring will be done based on beard and spur length. Weighing your turkey is optional, but weight does not contribute to score.

Photos of your measurements as well as one of you with your weapon and the bird are required to place, and you must report your kill and your score in a timely manner on the official Reporting thread which I will set up later.

I'll post the rules below. The deadline for sign-up is March 14, and you must be signed up AND assigned to a team before you kill a turkey that you want to enter in the contest.

I felt like I started looking for sign-ups a little early last year and no one was too interested until late in the game, but I was trying to get ahead of the early seasons. I hope putting off the announcement a little closer to most Opening Days and having a shorter sign-up period will spin people up a bit to get in gear without inconveniencing guys who don't even think about turkeys until mid-April.

As long as we want to keep these things as team contests vs. individual feats of strength, I think we have to shoot for early deadlines and risk disappointing latecomers. I will consider entering latecomers after the deadline if I have enough to spread them among teams fairly, so if you see this notice late, don't assume you can't play. Contact me, and if you think I missed your message, contact me again. It would be helpful to spread the word among your buddies and recruit them to play as well, to boost your chances of getting in late. Team assignment is by random drawing, though, so no posses and no ringers.

Let me know in this thread or elsewhere if you have suggestions for the contest, the sign-up process, recruiting, improving or clarifying the rules, etc.
2.) Swamp Fox - 03/04/2017
Contest dates: March 15, 2017 through May 31, 2017

Sign-up deadline: March 14, 6:00 PM Eastern

1-A picture of you, the bird, and weapon posted to the Kill Reporting Thread within ten days of the kill, posted in the Reporting Thread which we will set up. Provide the date of the kill, the measurements and the total score for your bird in the Reporting Thread, along with the story (if you'd like). This year, you can also post a turkey recipe or cooking tip along with or ASAP after the kill report. You can write out a full recipe, summarize one, provide a cooking tip or post a link to a recipe or cooking tip. In the event of a tie regarding bird measurements, the contestant or team with the most recipes/tips will be declared the winner. You do not need to kill a bird to post a recipe or tip, so a hunter who skunks can still help his team by placing in the contest this way.

2-A picture of the beard (still attached to the bird, DO NOT CUT OFF BEARD) and tape measure or ruler should show the length. Show entire length of beard and tape measure, including the tip. Measurement is to the end of the longest strand.

3-A picture of each spur and a tape measure showing the length. Spurs must still be attached to the legs. Measurement is along the outside centerline, so with spurs that have any curve to them, you'll need a flexible tape.

Scoring:
Scores will be determined by spur length x 10 plus beard length x 2. A vertical bow kill earns 10 bonus points. Providing weight is optional and will not count toward your score.

For instance:
Beard is 8.5" = 8.5x2=17 pts.
Spurs 1" & 1-1/8" = 2.125 total spur length x 10 = 21.25 pts.
Vertical Bow Kill Bonus Points: Plus 10

So: 17 + 21.25 = 38.25 pts. total for a gun or crossbow kill. A vertical bow kill would add 10 points for a total score of 48.25.

All kills to be scored to the nearest 1/8th inch.

Only 1 bird may be entered per contestant. If you take a bigger bird after you have entered one already, you may upgrade to the better bird. When you upgrade it will cancel out the previous entry. You must be registered for the contest prior to the date of your kill. You cannot kill a bird and enter it for a teammate.

Each member's bird will count toward the team's total points.

In the past, in the event of a tie, we said we'd match the teams' top bird, second bird, third bird, etc. until we had a higher score for one team. Instead of that, we're going to use the recipe/cooking tip thing described above as the tie-breaker. This eliminates the possibility that one slightly bigger bird in one team slot creates a victory over a more successful team effort on the other side (e.g., one bird from Team A beating two or three from Team B). In the event the recipe tie-breaker method does not result in a winner, the original top bird method will be the final deciding factor.

Bluecat, you wanna keep track of teams and scores?
4.) bluecat - 03/06/2017
Bluecat, you wanna keep track of teams and scores?
You bet!

Count me in the contest too.
5.) bow-fishhunter - 03/09/2017
Sure what the hey hay. for some reason I can shoot a deer every year but shoot a stupid turkey yep! nope they have my number.
6.) Swamp Fox - 03/13/2017
Bumping this up...Crookedeye says he's in, "officially"...

So we've got that going for us, which is nice.

7.) BULLZ-i - 03/13/2017
I'M "OFFICIALLY NOT" JOINING
8.) Swamp Fox - 03/13/2017
LOL...

Thanks for letting me know. I was beginning to wonder...:wink
9.) BULLZ-i - 03/13/2017
YOU HAVE TO BE 100% CLEAR AROUND HERE SOMETIMES. OTHER TIMES, NOT SO MUCH.
10.) Swamp Fox - 03/13/2017
This is true...:-)

Good luck if you're hunting them.
11.) Dan-o - 03/13/2017
In!!
12.) Swamp Fox - 03/14/2017
Excellent!

We need at least one more for even teams.

I think an additional two players on top of that helps meet last year's record attendance, but I'd have to visit the archives to be sure.

Spread the word.
13.) Swamp Fox - 03/14/2017
I guess everybody's gotten tired of winning already...

Anybody who's signed up already is IN and their turkeys as of tomorrow will count.

Teams have been drawn but I'm going to hold off on the announcement of rosters until there's a little more excitement around here, or this thread makes it to four pages, whichever comes first.

But don't worry: Beatings WILL continue until morale improves.
14.) DParker - 03/14/2017
I'd enter, but in over 12 years of hunting NE TX public land I've never actually seen a turkey. I heard some....once....on a unit where turkey hunting is prohibited, of course.
15.) Swamp Fox - 03/14/2017
Turkey numbers are down in a lot of places, and have been for several years in areas I follow.

I'm always amazed at any place where they're all over.

It's hard to kill 'em where they ain't.
16.) Swamp Fox - 03/15/2017
Over the years, I've heard Sabine NF mentioned as being pretty decent public land for turkeys.

Yay? Nay?
17.) Swamp Fox - 03/15/2017
Also, I don't know if you know this, but they have a big problem with radioactive wild hogs in Fukushima (sp?), Japan...So you've got that going for you, which is nice.

18.) crookedeye - 03/18/2017
we should see if alex would make this a "sticky" so we can click to it easily, and keep track of alll the teams...

looks like its going to be 1 on 1 competitions this year.. we still have that turkey beard we send to the winner to hang on the wall for a year??
19.) Swamp Fox - 03/19/2017
LOL...

It's still a team contest----You know, to promote camaraderie around here, LOL---but we might need to kick it up a notch and make it Shirts and Skins. I'm not sure yet how we can randomly pick that, though, and not risk driving viewers away from the site.

A traveling trophy might not be a bad idea. Also maybe a fruit basket or bag of left-over Easter candy.

I'm interested in other suggestions for promoting contests around here. Open them to women and children? Hire booth babes? Cheerleaders? Go international? Take out an ad in an LGBT newspaper?

Let me know in the box below.

Dah. But must needs Komrade Swamp Fox much elevation to recruiting game at Pig of Wiggling market.

21.) Swamp Fox - 03/19/2017
LOL...

I can have some motivational posters printed up...Just change the text to "Sign up..." etc. etc.

22.) Swamp Fox - 03/23/2017
Bumping this up, just because if women of the old Soviet Bloc don't get your motor running, you might be Russian...

(?)---LOL

23.) Swamp Fox - 03/23/2017
Plus there might be some stragglers out there wanting to get in on the contest, which still can be accomplished for a price...

I'm a little concerned Swampy. Where do you find this stuff?
25.) Swamp Fox - 03/23/2017
Everyone knows about old Soviet cars...especially if you're colluding to defeat Hillary...
26.) Swamp Fox - 03/24/2017
27.) Swamp Fox - 03/25/2017
Crookedeye, are you hunting tomorrow?
28.) crookedeye - 03/25/2017
no. i was thinking about it.. but with basketball on, and featherbones in the oven... plus its cold and rainy out there..maybe i'll get them next week..i think i'll take the crossbow out..
29.) crookedeye - 03/25/2017
that way i can kinda hunt them like if i had a shotgun..
30.) Swamp Fox - 03/25/2017
LOL...At least you don't have snow. probably two out of every three stories I hear about an opener trip to NW Nebraska involves snow...usually a blizzard, LOL. That's the only part of the state I've hunted, so I don't know if it gets tropical where you go...

But I can blow off hunting in the rain like a champ, too.
31.) Swamp Fox - 03/27/2017
Bumping this up for the day. I need one more player to round out 3 two-man teams.

In so far:

Me
Bluecat
Bow-fishhunter
Dan-o
Crookedeye
32.) bluecat - 03/27/2017
Well, when you think about it, Dan-o is kinda like a team all by himself.
33.) Swamp Fox - 03/27/2017
This is true, LOL...

It might even out, though. I don't know how much time I'll have to hunt, myself. My season's been open for a week and I haven't been able to even get near the woods yet.

I might have to live vicariously through Crookedeye this season----- :shivers:-----LOL

Since we met the goal of getting the thread to four pages, finally, I'll announce teams today. I'm saying "there's still a chance" someone else will sign up...:dh:---LOL---

(Where are the chronically late entrants when you really need them?:re::wink)
34.) Swamp Fox - 03/31/2017
Alright, I forgot/blew off announcing teams, but since April Fool's is almost here I figure it's time:

Team One

Crookedeye
Bluecat

Team Two

Bow-Fishhunter
Dan-o

Team Three

Swamp Fox

Good luck to everyone!
35.) DParker - 03/31/2017
Alright...don't any of you screw up my April Madness bracket.
36.) bluecat - 04/01/2017
I'm worried crookedeye is going to have to defend himself against some of those rabid turkeys. Crookedeye, pack heat.
37.) crookedeye - 04/01/2017
how are we going to keep track of all these teams?? would going to need some type of special computer..

one more week of work then i'm heading out for 4 or 5 days, by that time there going to be mean. i'll have to be on high alert i dont want to get spurred like in 2004...i still have the scares to remind me..
38.) bluecat - 04/01/2017
Stand your ground crookedeye.
