The wife and I are kicking around the idea of doing a tour of the British Isles next year and I need some advice. Has anyone here ever been? The wife wants to see the countryside, and I want to see the inside of as many pubs and scotch distilleries as my liver can stand.

I visited London a LOOOONG time ago. If I were to go back again, I'd skip all the Royals stuff (which is just me being uninterested in it) and concentrate on Tudor and Elizabethan history. (Tyburn, the Tower, Globe Theater, Shakespeare trail, etc.) Also, I'd probably run through Harrod's just to see if it's still the amazing place I remember.

Other than that though, I'd like to visit Wales, the Cotswolds, Stonehenge, Bath, Stratford and Lancashire. There's plenty of countryside in that tour and plenty of beer/ale/whatever, too. Not sure about scotch. But I think I'd concentrate on finding any Angel's Milk, Dragon's Brew, Mad Dog or Left Leg, unless they stopped brewing them since the 16th century.

I believe I'd do Scotland as a separate trip if I could afford it. Unless you're planning on vacating for several weeks, I don't think I could squeeze in everything I'd like to see in one trip.

Naturally, between one or two trips, I would have to visit all the Holy Grail castles (which are accessible).

This is a pretty good summary for a place to start:

I've seen some other good stuff on the castles (I was actually looking at this a few weeks ago...LOL) if you google the individual castles or especially Monty Python Holy Grail + Castle Name...

Of course, I'll also want to get in a fight that starts in a field on an Irish farm and includes an intermission at the local public house. Marquis of Queensberry rules.
5.) Swamp Fox - 03/23/2017
Well, of course that wouldn't be the British Isles...:bad:

But I applaud your spirit anyway....

Went on a European tour in 97. Saw Bath, Stonehenge, London, Salisbury. Excellent. So much to see.

Would like to go to British Isles too.

How does the wife feel about Vikings? --LOL

I'd be all over an itinerary of Viking settlements and raiding points. History Channel did a supplement to Vikings a while back that traced some routes and went to different sites. Did they find the grave of Ivar the Boneless?

Might be worth looking up.

I consider it my duty to sample as much peril as I can.

That settles it. Castle Anthrax is going on to the itinerary.

If Wales makes it to your list, this castle is overlooked in many of the MP articles I've seen. It's only seen briefly at the beginning of the movie, through the fog and mist, and at a distance. King Arthur and Patsy are coconutting to it, and then come close-ups in the swallow scene, which is shot at Doune.

You might also find this site interesting to scout other locations, courtesy of Cardinal Fang, LOL.
