The pattern on the cover of Bowhunter Gear Special 2017 is mottled light green and tan in Browning's Hell's Canyon Speed line. It looks pretty goofy low in a pine tree, and would be even goofier if they hadn't photo-shopped a massive amount of green into the background.

I can see it as a good turkey camo in late spring or for early season deer hunting in deciduous trees with average concealment, but thought it was an odd choice for the cover unless you're trying to hype early-season camo to Easterners who can get past the ladder stand on a metaphorical telephone pole. :re:

The brown version looks good. Very open. Might be too light, open and effective for the Mossy Oak dark blob crowd. :fire:

Add your own two cents about camo in the box below. :wink

2.) bluecat - 05/31/2017
If it's on the cover of Bowhunter you know it's good stuff.
3.) Swamp Fox - 05/31/2017
All I know is that if you were in a ladder stand on a pine tree around here, you wouldn't be pulling your bow back on anything under 50 yards no matter what you were wearing, and probably not even then...LOL.
4.) Swamp Fox - 05/31/2017
Here's the brown version, which they call AU, for Arid/Urban.

This is a hoodie, synthetic material, and not too expensive.

The anchovy in the ointment? The incredibly stupid white lining. You wonder if anyone at Browning hunts.

To be fair, I have a very nice Kryptek hoodie from the early days, and that has a white lining too. I'm pretty sure they were smart enough to get rid of it for Gen 2. There's nothing like buying a nice piece of hunting clothing and debating yourself for the next 20 years about whether to wear it while actually hunting.

In my defense, I bought it over the internet without noticing the lining, and was too lazy to return it. And did I mention it IS nice?

The anchovy in the ointment? If you buy it from Walmart to save $20 bucks or so, it looks like they skip the camo inner lining in the hood. And the wind collar. The picture on the Walmart site has an incredibly stupid white lining in the hood. Since Browning puts its brand on some weird stuff (Have you seen the Browning "Bed, Bath and Beyond" line of home furnishings?), I'm not going to waste my energy wondering why they would have this "authentic knockoff" out there.

I'm also too lazy to double check that they do in fact go all the way to identify this item with the actual Speed line, [Edit: They do.] but it sure looks like it on the surface, so I think it's safe to say they're not overly careful of Speed gear's status as serious hunting togs. Also, the material is synthetic, but I haven't checked to see if it's the same blend they use for the real stuff.

Ahhhh, camo! My favorite subject.....
Camo isn't made for hunters anymore just like pickup trucks aren't made for farmers anymore. Camo is made for magazine cover and for idiots to argue over. "the camo I paid $729 for is so good, the deer never see me..." What a bunch of crapola. Buy a damn green plaid shirt and some brown farmer jeans and go hunt. Find a place where you aren't skylit and hunt the wind, deer don't care what you wear.
Besides scent products, camo is the biggest ripoff in the hunting industry and people fall for it every damn year.

there, I feel better now.
7.) Swamp Fox - 05/31/2017
LOL...Largely agree with you. Apart from effectiveness, though, there are patterns I like and patterns I hate. I guess that's just natural. But at some point, it IS just a uniform these days, and the hype is way out of proportion to the utility and to the real differences between brands (not styles).
8.) bluecat - 05/31/2017
+2 Swampy

I think some of the best camo out there is the old Predator stuff. It's god awful ugly but really breaks up your outline.
9.) Swamp Fox - 05/31/2017
I have some 2314's in a pewter/copperish Predator....From prolly 25 years ago...They're too pretty to shoot.

Naturally, they stopped making them once I decided they were the coolest arrows ever...LOL
10.) Jon - 05/31/2017
I mix and match whatever fits my fat ass best anymore. Sometimes it's brown 911 pants and old Mossy Oak Brush shirt. That's my best combo
11.) bluecat - 05/31/2017
Does this camo make my ass look fat?
12.) Jon - 05/31/2017
The deer don't care that I have a fat ass
13.) DParker - 05/31/2017
The deer don't care that I have a fat ass
Well, not to your face. Deer are just polite that way. But I've heard them snickering behind my back.

"Come on in! Great to see you! Have a seat."

"Where?"

16.) Swamp Fox - 06/01/2017
"Oh, I see a place now. Almost missed it, 'cause it was camouflaged..."

17.) bluecat - 06/02/2017
If you are wearing the same pattern as the furniture, it does buy you a little time when wife needs something done.

The plastic couch covers kept it nice don't you think?

She was ahead of her time. RIP
23.) Swamp Fox - 06/02/2017
LOL...Should move that pic over to my Nostalgia Photos thread that's sucking wind in Podunk...
24.) bluecat - 06/02/2017
We should have a thread that acknowledges all the threads that ended up sucking. I bet I would probably win.
25.) bluecat - 06/02/2017
The only threads that end up sucking are all the ones about archery...
26.) Swamp Fox - 06/02/2017
LOL...Here's a somewhat interesting thread on the KUIU blog from when they were allegedly looking for hunter input as to what type of camo to go with for their line.

I meant to mention ASAT the other day but mentioned Predator. ASAT is crazy good but ugly as hell.
28.) Swamp Fox - 06/02/2017
I wondered if you meant ASAT. I know people who use it love it, but I agree it doesn't win any beauty contests.

I think Optifade might be a little more popular if Sitka weren't the only ones selling it.

Not sure why Multicam isn't used more in hunting clothes.
29.) bluecat - 06/08/2017
It's not so much what the camoflage is. It's more important to blend in to existing surroundings.

30.) Jon - 06/09/2017

Amen. Well put Jon!

This reminds me of an experience me and my son had a few years back elk hunting. We were camped out in one of our usual spots, using the trail head / parking area on BLM as a jump off point to hunt walk in only Refuge area. We were in our camo, which was bought purely for practicality and depending on how we choose to layer it, can some times be pretty miss-matched. That being said, its all decent good quality stuff, albeit not the latest and greatest fashion statement.

So one morning, in comes these two - a guy and a woman decked out to the nines in the spiffiest camo you've ever seen. I can't be positive, but it looked like Kuiu to me, or something similar. They looked like a matching Ken and Barbie doll all decked out. Perfect, not a hair out of place, not a wrinkle on the camo, and certainly no blotches of mud. So I went over to them to inquire about what area they planned going off to hunt in as I didn't want them or us messing up either's hunt plan. So I could see them looking me up and down as I approached (bear in mind we'd been out there for four days already and probably looked a little rough. Any how, once I introduced myself and explained why I wanted to talk to them, he seemed to let his guard down a little and act at least a little friendly. She however, poured the bitch factor on and totally blew me off and even scoffed a little. (Nice folks...just the kind I go outdoors to get away from.) So as we talked he seemed to appreciate my concern about not wanting to be hunting in the same area, so we wrapped up sharing which drainage each of us planned to hunt and went our ways.

So later that evening, when me and my son came hiking out, they were at their Jeep getting ready to leave. Obviously neither of us had gotten anything, but he did come over to us to see if we saw any elk. They didn't see a thing all day, and he was convinced that there were no elk in the area. I tried not to smile as I told him we saw 17 elk off and on throughout the day. So he says, "Huh, even dressed like that you saw them." I just shook my head and blew the dip-shit off at that point. Some people...

Jeep people suck.

Anyway Bob, camo is a Jeep thing. You wouldn't understand.

Maybe he was an ungulate eye researcher who felt that your sticks-and-leaves-plus-tiger-stripes went against the grain of hundreds of thousands of dollars of study and pattern development at WL Gore and the University of East Slobovia State (Go, Moles!).

Maybe he was just surprised that a chick magnet such as himself was not also an elk magnet.

(I mean, we've all been there, amirite?)

I'm just spitballin' here...I like to look at all the rational excuses first, but a sudden outbreak of Fetal Jackass Syndrome that's lain dormant for years is another possibility.

I find that telling people like that that they should seek medical help always results in favorable outcomes, LOL.

The Army is in the middle of another camo pattern change for some reason. I thought they liked the Multi-Cam, which is officially known as the Operation Enduring Freedom pattern. But no. They tweaked it a bit at the cost of several million dollars in development. I haven't studied it to death, but the changes seem pretty subtle. I prolly could have made some suggestions for a mere million bucks. They should call me next time.

Anyway, Bob, I thought it might make you feel better that even the U.S. Army agrees with you that not everything has to match 100% of the time, at least not until 2019...LOL
Soldiers are authorized to mix and match T-shirts, belts, and boots with either the Operation Enduring Freedom Camouflage Pattern or the Operational Camouflage Pattern during the transition period - expected to run through Oct. 1, 2019. To further ease the change, Soldiers, who already have Flame Resistant ACUs in the Operational Enduring Freedom Camouflage Pattern, will be authorized to wear them during the transition.

"I have asked noncommissioned officers to ensure their Soldiers understand that during this transition period, several uniforms and variations will be authorized in our formations," Dailey said. "Presenting a professional appearance is very important to Soldiers. But, we will not inconvenience or burden our troops. We will still be the most lethal fighting force the world has even known even if our belts don't match for the next few years." https://www.army.mil/article/149543

39.) Jon - 06/20/2017
Swampy, I had been military for only 3 uniform changes and although there was much research and development of the chosen camo patterns based on current mission, the change was really a political statement. You see, there is a legacy issue at stake when a new CMSAF (Chief Master Sargent of the Air Force) sits in the seat and this is generally when you see changes like this come (Air Force wise anyway). The other branches have their own legacy to ensure and we can't all be the same anymore. The Navy has to have their new blueberry camo that is on it's way out, the army has digicam for certain troops, marines have MARPAT....it's all based on someone at the top of the chain of command who wants something that sets them apart.
They did learn that going door to door wearing jungle camo wasn't effective so they went to digital camo to match the surroundings but other than that, it's all someone making a legacy for themselves.
40.) Swamp Fox - 06/20/2017
That's been my understanding, too, Jon. Each branch wants to be distinctive and pee on a different tree.

There are a few interesting articles out there over the last few years on the development, politics and reasoning behind the various uniforms. If anyone's interested I can try to dig some up. One of my favorite and most memorable quotes from one of them relates to the gray digital "Universal" pattern the Army used (and which is in Jon's couch picture above): Along with many quips along the lines of "It's a universal fail" was one soldier who said that the only place he'd ever seen it work was in a gravel pit. LOL

I never really understood the need for most Navy to have camo (although as a fisherman I think some "water and sky" camos are kind of cool) and I thought the quasi-tiger stripe of the Air Force was very sharp-looking but probably a little much for most of the personnel. LOL. I think I read somewhere that they're going to mess with it for a redesign, though. I forget the "reason" behind it.

I wouldn't mind all this so much if each revision didn't cost millions of dollars just to come up with the design, forget about outfitting everybody so they match. Seriously, these design changes are costing 3 and 4 million a pop---My impression is that's mostly just to come up with the camo pattern, not the work of what pocket to put where and that kind of thing. If I come across where I got that idea from I'll post a link. Some place I surfed had each camo or uniform's design cost listed going back several generations.

In the meantime, this is pretty good. I like the line about the Navy camo...LOL
