1.) Swamp Fox - 07/22/2017
Yes, I think we're having one. You can sign up on this thread.

The rules will be the same as last year, unless I'm asked to consider otherwise. The deadline for sign-up is August 14 at 5 PM Eastern, and teams will be drawn at random. If you miss the deadline, I'll see what I can do, but no guarantees.

Outlines of the contests and the rules to follow, on this thread.

[Edited to clarify that this is the sign-up thread.]

Further edit: We can take two more players to round out a new team of three. Let me know if you want in by Sept. 30, or you'll be SOL...You know you wanna...
2.) Swamp Fox - 07/22/2017
As there were last year, there will be two contests: a whitetail contest and a “Small Game/Other” contest. The SG/O contest is really a photography contest where you can highlight your non-whitetail outdoor activities, whether hunting or not. You can also post pics related to whitetails, if you'd like. You are automatically entered in both contests if you sign up for the whitetail contest. However, if you’d like to be in the SG/O contest but don’t expect to hunt whitetails this year, please tell me so I don’t put a non-hunter on a whitetail team.

The whitetail contest will have two divisions: Vertical Bow and Any Other Legal Weapon. Crossbows participate in AOLW, along with atlatls, spears, special forces fighting knives, shotguns, pistols and rifles. Teams selected will participate in both divisions. That is, your buds on your bow team will be your buds on the AOLW team. There is no need to sign up twice, or to choose which contest you’ll be in.

Scoring for the whitetail contests will be the same as in the past, regardless of weapon used.

The Small Game/Other Photo contest will have winners in each category selected by the votes of forum members. Categories are posted below, in a separate post. You do not need to be in the contest to vote. You do not need to kill an animal to submit a picture. The only three requirements for the SG/0 Photo contest are that you 1) sign up for the contest, 2) go on a hunt for small game or something other than whitetail, or that you fish or trap this year, and 3) submit a photo taken this year. You may use any legal weapon on your hunt. Bowhunters compete with everyone else.

Deadline for sign-up for the contests is August 14 at 5 PM Eastern. The drawing for team assignments will be done at 6 PM. Team assignments will be random, as in the past.

Late entries will be considered this year, especially for newcomers. However, this will be completely at the contest administrators' discretion. If late sign-ups have the whiff of even a smidgeon of corruption, or if they begin to be a pain in the ass, you will be SOL after August 14 at 5 PM whether you're a newbie, a regular or a returning veteran of the site. That is, there is NO GUARANTEE you will be accepted into the contest if you sign up after August 14 at 5 PM. Late entries (those after August 14) may have to wait for team assignment, and there is no guarantee of team assignment.

You will not be able to enter a deer killed before you are assigned a team. If you wish a deer you've taken be counted for the contest, you must have been assigned to a team prior to the kill. No exceptions.

Under no circumstances will a late-entry contestant be accepted after September 30.

The rules will be as before, and the contest will run from August 15, 2014 to January 15, 2018, and we will have team names this year, as we did last year.
3.) Swamp Fox - 07/22/2017
Here are the Whitetail Contest rules and scoring method for this year, with points of emphasis highlighted. Rules are the same as last year. No changes.

The Whitetail Contest has two Divisions, a Vertical Bow Division and an Any Other Legal Weapon division. Vertical Bows compete in the Vertical Bow division. Crossbows compete in the Any Other Legal Weapon division if they are legal in your hunting area.

1) Teams will be drawn at random at 6 PM Eastern Time on August 14. We will shoot for a minimum of three hunters per team. Deadline for signing up for the contest will be 5PM Eastern on the 14th. See Post #1 for info on late sign-ups. Late sign-ups are discouraged.

Hunters who sign up for the Whitetail Contest will be automatically enrolled in both the Vertical Bow Division and the Any Other Legal Weapon Division. They will also be automatically enrolled in the Small Game/Other Contest, aka the Photo Contest (details to follow). If you do not plan to hunt whitetails but do want to be in the SG/O contest, please tell me when you sign up so I don't put you on a whitetail team where you can't pull weight with teammates. I'll deal with any massive influx of Other Weapons hunters to the contest (if there is such an event) at my own discretion, so as to prevent confusion in the contest or detriment to the Vertical Bow division, and will do likewise if there is a massive influx of bow-only hunters causing harm to the AOLW teams, LOL

2) Each contestant will be able to score one deer, buck or doe, in each division. Shoot one with a vertical bow, enter it in the Vertical Bow Division. Kill one with anything else, it goes in the Any Other Legal Weapon Division. VB deer cannot be entered in the AOLW division.

3) Each contestant will be allowed to cull his own deer so as to register his highest-scoring deer in substitution of another deer he might have registered earlier. He will not be allowed to cull for the other members of the team.

4) All contestants must follow the hunting regulations applicable to the area they are hunting.

5) Any deer must be registered with the contest administrator no later than 10 days after the kill. You must have picture proof of your kill. Register your kill by posting a picture WITH YOUR WEAPON in the special contest kill thread we will set up. If you want to post a story with your picture, you can do that in a separate thread if you wish, but all kill registrations must be made in the official contest kill thread. You are responsible for making sure your kill is registered, for providing a score to the administrator when you post your pic, and for making sure that your entry shows up in contest reporting stats.

6) Contest dates are from Aug. 15 through January 15.

Bucks will score 50 points for the kill and 10 points for each point of at least one inch. NO RING HANGERS. Must be one inch or better to score.

Does will score 100 points. We would like to encourage contestants to shoot a doe rather than an immature buck. Let's let them grow.

7) You must choose a Team Name as soon as possible after teams are assigned. If you do not choose a team name, one will be chosen for you. It won't be pretty.
4.) Swamp Fox - 07/22/2017
The outline and rules for the Small Game/Other contest, also known as the Photo Contest. I have tweaked this to allow more fishing photos into the contest in hopes of increasing participation. Other than that, no changes.

Notice that while fishing photos are allowed, you must participate in some non-whitetail hunting or trapping pursuit in 2017 through the end of the contest to enter a fishing photo. We have always required SG/O hunting or trapping in order to be in this contest at all, so this isn't turning into a fishing contest. We just would like to see the pictures! :-)

So:

This will be a photo contest with winners decided by votes of forum members in the general population. You do not need to be in the contest to vote, but you do need to be in the contest to submit pictures. I will automatically enroll you in the SG/O contest when you sign up for the Whitetail contest. If you would like to be in the SG/O contest but do not plan to hunt whitetails this year, please let me know so I don't put you on a whitetail team that needs all the trigger-pullers it can get.

The SG/O contest will be an individual contest, rather than a team effort. The pursuit of any game, predator or varmint other than whitetail deer by any legal hunting or trapping method qualifies for SG/O status, and any legal weapon or trap may be used. You do not need to kill or take an animal to be able to submit a photo for the contest. The pictures you submit should be related to SG/O hunts or excursions you go on this year, but do not need to be taken on the actual hunt. Any hunting, trapping, fishing, camping, or working pics are eligible, as long as they have at least a shred of a connection to the outdoors and you did or will in fact hunt or trap something other than whitetails this year.

The pics can also relate to whitetail deer or your pursuit of whitetails or your time in the whitetail woods, but should not be of whitetail kills. A picture of a fawn or you sweeping out your hunting camp in August or scouting this past spring would be okay, for instance, as would pics of almost anything else woods ‘n’ water-related. All that is required is that the picture should be at least loosely related to your SG/O efforts this year, and that the picture be taken this year.

There is no limit to the number of pictures you can submit, but multiple submissions should be named or numbered by the entrant to promote easy identification.

There will be six categories for photos:

Scenery
Game or Wildlife Pictures
Hero/Dead Animal Pics
Camp Pictures
Cool Stuff (rifle against a tree, armadillo on its back, abandoned still, old house place, etc.)
Buddy Pictures

You decide what category you want to enter your picture in if it's close. For instance, a picture of your buddy at 4 AM before he's had his morning coffee could be a camp picture or a buddy picture. You pick.

Post the picture(s) on the appropriate entry thread (when I post it) with its/their name(s) or number(s), and state your category(ies) and the details of the photo(s) (date(s), general location(s) and as much background story as you choose to tell. Members can give a picture contest points on this thread by posting that they "like" a picture and/or by using emoticons, or they can send me or the Contest Scorekeeper (Bluecat) a PM if they wish to "like" anonymously.

I will consider multiple thumbs-up or positive emoticons (e.g., :tu::tu::tu: or  ) from the same voter as multiple up-votes, within reason. So, if you REALLY, REALLY like a pic, show it.

At the end of the contest we will put all the photos in each category up against one another and have a "Best in Category" vote that will work the same way. I will take the "likes" and the "Best in Category" votes and announce the winner in each of the six categories. BiC votes at the end will be weighted more heavily than "Likes" tallied during the contest, but "Likes" can be used to pick a winner in case there is a lack or absence of final votes.

Lobbying for likes and votes for your photos is allowed, as is recruiting new forum members to join HC and vote for your pics.

Contest dates will run concurrent with the Whitetail contest (Aug. 15-Jan. 15) but pictures can be from any time in 2017 through the end of the contest.

Management reserves the right to tweak the rules and use discretion in judging as we get this newish contest off the ground. If you have comments or suggestions, please start a separate thread, or send me a PM. If my inbox is full, notify me and I'll make room.
5.) crookedeye - 07/23/2017
so if i catch a catfish will that get me points for the contest? probally depending on whisker length i would asume.....but anyhow if you bluecat and dparker are on the same team some of us might think its rigged.. how do we no where getting a fare deal out of it?
6.) Swamp Fox - 07/23/2017
You'll just have to trust us...

And no points for the catfish, but you'll gain fame and fans by posting the pic. And that's what it's all about.
7.) crookedeye - 07/23/2017
you could split the 3 of you up.. like put bluecat with someone and dparker on another team... we all no dparker isnt going to shoot chit, but he's good for moral..he has cooking methods.. you ever seen his smoked ox tails?
8.) Swamp Fox - 07/23/2017
LOL...I'm more worried about ME not shooting chit, and I'm NOT good for morale, apparently, based on forum and contest participation, LOL.

I'm sure we'll be able to find a solution that makes a few people happy. :p
9.) Swamp Fox - 07/24/2017
Okay, anyone who made it past the wall of words to Post #5 knows that Crookedeye is looking for a way to score points this year. The easiest way would be for someone good who can kill deer to be on his team. Since Billy has joined the contest, there is now that possibility, LOL

Don't be the last on your block to sign up! You too might have the chance to get Billy on your team!
10.) Jon - 07/24/2017
I got a chuckle....."especially for the newcomers"..... What, did a new person join the 3 of you? LOL
11.) Swamp Fox - 07/24/2017
It could happen...LOL
12.) bluecat - 07/24/2017
I got a chuckle....."especially for the newcomers"..... What, did a new person join the 3 of you? LOL
I believe you promised you would if you were to somehow obtain a certain signed picture of a certain someone...
13.) Jon - 07/24/2017
LOL, this is true but we were discussing the newcomers....
14.) Wild Bob - 07/24/2017
I feel sorry that you guys got a limited pool...

But not so sorry that I'm willing to abandon my honored tradition of staying away from this contest! Last year, I killed a good whitetail buck...that's never happened on the years I've participated in this jinxed contest (jinxed for me that is...)
15.) Swamp Fox - 07/24/2017
Ha! I think Luv2 believes it jinxes him, too. But a couple of years ago he fell into my trap and entered himself into the contest without realizing it, and proceeded to kill a monster. I think his team walked away with it that year. Pretty sure you can read all about it in the 2015 contest threads.
16.) crookedeye - 07/24/2017
this contest has always been cursed...
17.) Swamp Fox - 07/24/2017
LOL...

Maybe I should forget about this whole recruiting phase and just pull all the names I can write down in 15 seconds out of a hat AFTER the season. That way, you don't even know if you're in the contest until after it's over. That should take the pressure off a lot of folks, LOL.
18.) Wild Bob - 07/24/2017
Ha! I think Luv2 believes it jinxes him, too. - Oh, I remember it well...but it still doesn't change my experience or Voo-doo beliefs. (I agree with ya Crooked Eye!) Y'all have fun, and I'll have fun filling my tag!
19.) Swamp Fox - 07/24/2017
Maybe we should rename the contest the Calamityville Horror for you superstitious types...:-)

Feel free to share photos, Wild Bob! Really enjoyed what you contributed two years ago. The contest felt your absence last year (and Jon's, and Billy's, and BFH's and Hunter's and...).
20.) bluecat - 07/24/2017
It's comforting to know that all the information you've learned about deer and deer hunting - deer movement, scent control, bow tuning, shot placement, concealment tactics and stand placement really pales in comparison to whether you are involved in a deer contest on a remote site thousands of miles away on a server in a basement with two sleeping labs and box labeled 'XMas' near the hard drive.
21.) bluecat - 07/24/2017
[:dropping_mic]

Now I'm done.
22.) Swamp Fox - 07/24/2017
:-)

For my part, I will continue the beatings until morale improves...

Hahahaha! LOL! Point taken. It must go back to my German/Latvia gypsie ancestry...my older sister and mother have always claimed that they can feel spirits. The only spirits I feel are the ones I drink. :ach:
24.) Swamp Fox - 07/25/2017
But you've got the Kavorka, Bob, so you have that going for you, which is nice.

25.) Wild Bob - 07/27/2017
I'm more of a Quan kind of guy...:-)
26.) Swamp Fox - 07/27/2017

I thought I was on the winning team last year or am I wrong? I know Jerry and I were in it.
30.) Swamp Fox - 07/27/2017
Billy, I think you walked away with it last year. But I was talking about the photo contest rather than the hunting contest. I should have been clearer...LOL...We got hardly any pictures from anyone last year. The year before we had a bunch, including from you.
31.) Swamp Fox - 08/06/2017
Somebody give me a good deer video to put the paddles to this thing...I'd post one but I'm afraid it would cause a fuss, LOL.

Sign-ups still being taken until Aug. 14...:fire:

34.) DParker - 08/07/2017
I was going to guess "polar bear eating marshmallows in a snow storm", but now that you mention it...that reminds me of all last season too.
35.) Deerslayer88 - 08/08/2017
Count me in!

But now you know, LOL.

This why the Urban Dictionary is considered authoritative...:-)

I don't expect married guys really get the Quan, but I suppose it could happen...In some way, shape or form...There might be a different name for it when you're married...

The photo contest hasn't even started yet, but I'd say there's a good possibility we already have our winner ...

I don't want to discourage entries, though.

Forget I ever said anything.

Someone needs to do a German version of "Deadwood Pancakes". (You need to have watched Deadwood to enjoy that.)
54.) Swamp Fox - 08/10/2017
This might be a step in the right direction:

Insert the word "pancake" as appropriate.

OK, you go that one. I assumed video embedding was disabled for this forum (note that there's no button for videos at the top of the edit box).

In any event, those aren't the pancakes you're looking. Did you watch Deadwood, and are you familiar with the parody video I'm referring to?
58.) Swamp Fox - 08/10/2017
When I said Google I meant youtube. When I try to embed that video as usual, it embeds the German mince meat song (last thing I copied). Tried it three times.

I know the scene from Deadwood, having looked it up, but don't know the parody, unless it's the one with the guy at the stove talking to his buddy.
59.) Swamp Fox - 08/10/2017
Edit...apparently the fourth time's the charm...See above.

Heck, even I don't know of any pancakes scene from Deadwood itself...but, yeah...I'm talking about the guy at the stove.
61.) Swamp Fox - 08/10/2017
Okay, maybe I just imagined that...LOL...I couldn't hang in there with the series for some reason, so I haven't seen much of it. I've seen a bunch of the Al Schwearingen (sp?--LOL) scenes though...
62.) Swamp Fox - 08/13/2017
Only two days left...Sign up before Aug 14 at 5 PM Eastern...

Don't be in your yellow submarine all by yourself...

Ta-Da!

Teams One and Two should submit their team names by the end of the week if possible, so bluecat can get started on his spreadsheet.

Also, if anyone on Team 86 really doesn't want to be on Team 86, don't be shy...Let us know...Save Blue some work...But don't forget the whole point of Team 86...LOL

Team 1:

Team 86

70.) Jon - 08/15/2017

(That was for you Blue :-) and if I don't...I'm still gonna blame it on this gosh dang contest. LOL!)

And BTW Swampy - I've got to say, great lead in using the Cable Guy video! :tu:

Do I get to county my 6-legged kill?

Absolutely...LOL

But the leg-count is post-kill. Just like if you knock off a tine with an errant shot from your high-powered .224 Forum Moderator...

Boom! There is the first one. Come on who else wants to join the winning team?!!
81.) Swamp Fox - 09/12/2017
Welcome aboard, Rich. My Magic 8 Ball says you're on Team 2, while JGB-Ohio lands Team 1.

To all the lurkers and fence-sitters:

Late sign-ups are technically possible until Sept.30, but you have to be assigned a team before any kill you make can be registered. We can't take a deer you killed before you were assigned a team, and I can't guarantee a team for late sign-ups. The best bet is to get in early, before you go into hunting mode, and bring a buddy with you if you can so I can even out the teams.

On a side note: Teams 1 and 2 need to get together and come up with team names. Otherwise, some amusing, semi-amusing or downright disparaging names might be assigned if management is feeling froggy.

Was in Johnstown Nebraska on Friday afternoon. Had not seen a deer yet this season. I was hunting a ladder stand on a creek corridor that they travel extensively. At 6:00 a smallish buck came by out of range. Watched him for a few minutes and then I saw this guy poking around and coming my way. I was able to position myself for the shot when his face was in the cedar trees. As he came around the cedar he was 5 steps from the stand. I shot and he took off. I saw him go down a few seconds later. He'd already run 100 yards.

Autopsy revealed I had gotten both lungs and explained why there was no blood. The entrance and exit holes were horizontal to each other which is hard to explain. The exit hole should have been a lot lower. The arrow also should have been at the scene of the crime but was out a little farther than you'd expect. The only thing we can think of is the arrow deflected after hitting the rib cage and straightened out. One of the bleeder blades from the 4-blade Stinger was bent. Never experienced an arrow deflection like that before but it worked out in my favor.

It was all two people could do to get him in a pickup. Biggest bodied deer I've ever shot and spent 7 hours yesterday processing for the freezer. Might do a European mount for fun - a lot of character in those busted up antlers.
98.) DParker - 11/08/2017
Damn, that's a beast (especially by TX standards)! Congrats.

It sounds like you now have an excuse to get one of these:

The bad news is that my vacu-seal crapped on me. The good news is it crapped on the last two packages. It was about 15 years old so I'm looking at one made by Lem.

I got an e-mail from FoodSaver yesterday saying that they're currently having a sale on sealers, with some going for as much as 60% off.

Thanks, on closer inspection I have a Food Saver. I purchased it for 300.00 and treated it like gold. Just does not seal anymore so I'm guessing the heating element croaked. I feel kinda naked without one now. I'm ashamed of my nakedness.

Hunting trip was a success, kinda. I had small bucks in bow range every time I went to the stand but I wanted to hold out for a big one which didn't happen. On the next to the last hunt I had a 3 year old 8 point come in not long before dark, he was the biggest one so far so I decided to harvest him, picked up my bow and carefully aimed and shot, the shot was a little low but was a lethal shot. When shot with archery equipment most of the time the deer will run until they loose enough blood and die which happens within seconds but they can cover a good bit of ground in a short time.I waited about an hour before I got on the trail and after I stopped finding blood. I called in help from my friends and we finally found him about 200 yards farther, so that made him go about 300 yards thru the thick cedar trees in all. As we walked up on him I couldn't believe what I saw, coyotes had found him and almost completely devoured all the flesh on him, I have pics but i'm not gonna show the carnage. We cut the head off to put a license tag on and that was all we could do, I hated it but it is nature.I'll put up thtee pics, the first is a pic the game camera took as I shot him and he was vacating the scene, the second is what his rack looked like. Third is what he looked like on the hoof before the shot. I'll try to get pics off my phone.
119.) Swamp Fox - 01/16/2018
The deer contest closed yesterday, so I think we can announce a winner today, assuming Bluecat has all the entries together.

And this is a heads-up and advance notice: We need somebody new to take over the turkey contest this year if you all want to do one.

It's not like it's a lot of work, but I think I've run my course. Time for some fresh blood.

I looked all over for billy's post and can't find it. He stated that he had killed a deer and the coyotes got to him before he could. He was trying to upload a picture. I think he then deleted the post.

I could not find any mention of Luv2's deer either.
