....Or for gun ownership, politics, religion, opinion or other item that has caused you to hide or downplay it in public or on social media?

Do you know of any stories related to this that you can link to?

Thanks.

Particularly interested in the hunting part of the question, so I'd appreciate any and all thoughts on that especially.

I get a free pass from the inlaws concerning hunting because I bowhunt. But my wife's side of the family are liberal, intolerant and closed minded.

I really fight to keep my mouth closed most of the time around them. I spoke up once concerning O and I got hammered pretty hard.

One time I was being lectured about gun control at a restaurant by my mother-in-law while I had a Glock 19 on my ankle. That was pretty cool.

I wonder if anti-hunting sentiment is stronger than it used to be, say, 20 years ago. My guess is yes. Back then, if the topic came up somehow, somebody might just raise an eyebrow. Nowadays I think there's a much greater chance that real damage gets done to personal and business relationships.

You can always point to the high-profile cases, especially the women who get ripped on social media for hunting. If that's what women go through out in the open, imagine what's happening to guys behind their backs.

I don't have all that much hard evidence in my own situation, though I have no doubt I could easily have a vehicle keyed or lose work in a variety of situations.

You usually never find out what's going on behind your back, so I thought it would be interesting to look around and see what other people think and have experienced in their own situations.

My strategy is to beat them to the punch by getting hammered beforehand. It's the only way to fly.

It is actually very surprising to me, living in a very liberal state (Illinois), that I almost never find somebody who is adamantly against guns or hunting. Whether it's friends,
neighbors, family or at work, just about everybody has been tolerant if not down right interested. A few people I've known don't like the hunting thing very much but they know that I am a hunter and we just don't talk about it.
18.) Swamp Fox - 12/17/2017
I think that's probably how it goes most of the time. People who know you probably usually aren't going to flog you, although some can't resist. I used to get a snide comment about hunting every once in a while, but that was always from two or three people who wanted to be snide to me anyway. It stopped when they passed on to the next dimension, I got out of their orbit, or they mellowed with age a little.

I think the chances of running into trouble are much higher when attackers can remain anonymous, or can act without you knowing.

As a thought experiment, let's imagine you're looking for work or applying for a non-political assignment at work or in the community. Maybe it's a charitable position, like with the Red Cross or United Way.

The rumor is that potential employers will Google you to see what they're getting into. I don't know how common that is. I probably wouldn't do it until after I'd met at least once with the applicant. I'm not sure I'd do it all, but I wouldn't say never.

Putting aside that some industries would care less about what you think than others, what are the chances that IN GENERAL what you think or are interested in affects your chances?

I grew up in Massachusetts, the VAST MAJORITY of the population are intolerant liberals. I have a group of folks I went to school with who I have as friends on facebook, they shun me for my lifestyle of guns, hunting and Republicanism. I can't tell you how many have "unfriended" me for my beliefs both politically and socially.
One of my best friends growing up is a extreme left lib, he's whacky at times and unfriended me because I didn't vote Killary, the world is going to end you know......Turds
24.) Swamp Fox - 12/18/2017
Well, that's an eye-opener. It goes to disprove the idea that knowing somebody personally moderates how poorly you'll treat them.

Of course, if you're a little nuts to begin with, that doesn't help you zip it.
