this year for some reason ive never been so cold in my stand.. that big buck i almost had a shot at sliped away , it was probally 15 degrees which isnt terribly cold. but after the encounter i figured on drawing my bow and seeing how a senirio would take place, my wrist.. elbow seemed like they would give out..i dont no if im getting older or what ..but the worst thing is i sweated walking to my stand. so the moral of the story is dont sweat walking to youre stand..

and what do you professionals wear as a baselayer..
2.) crookedeye - 01/29/2018

3.) crookedeye - 01/29/2018
thank you for youre honesty..
4.) crookedeye - 01/29/2018
that story really shook me..,.there could be a time and place where that could happen to one of us..
5.) crookedeye - 01/29/2018

LOL ...:applause:
7.) Swamp Fox - 01/29/2018
As far as "coldgear" goes, I use different base layers (UA, Polartec or whatever it is) and then one or two quarter-zip windbreaker type shirts. Those REALLY help hold in heat.

I hardly ever walk to a stand with all my clothes on. Sometimes have to spend quite a bit of time at the tree or in the tree getting dressed.
8.) crookedeye - 01/29/2018
that was my downfall this year walking in with all my clothes on..usally..and thats her first name..its 40 degress, but it was cold this year..
9.) bluecat - 01/29/2018
Thank you for your kind words crookedeye. It's a long process back to health but my therapists say it is doable. I'm at stage four now where I look at clown pictures.

Is wooltimate itchy?
10.) crookedeye - 01/29/2018
https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/b898aacc-9a10-4843-a9f2-353b1b38b510.....
11.) crookedeye - 01/29/2018
wooltimate is not itchy at all
12.) bluecat - 01/29/2018
I'll give it a try. The berber fleece is really nice. The facemask can turn a miserable hunt into an enjoyable one.
13.) crookedeye - 01/29/2018
cabelas had great sales on it..trust me as a pioneer of clothing this stuff is the bomb..
14.) bluecat - 01/29/2018
What pieces do you own?
15.) DParker - 01/29/2018
The facemask can turn a miserable hunt into an enjoyable one.
And an otherwise expensive booze run into a profitable one.
16.) DParker - 01/29/2018
This is actually a good thread. My slide toward lessened cold tolerance with age continued this year, and I need to start looking into some better cold weather gear (with "cold" being defined in TX terms as anything below 32ºF).
17.) crookedeye - 01/29/2018
pants vest and 2 coats.. its what i own,,, cant even feel the wind. its good stuff
18.) crookedeye - 01/29/2018
plus i have the hat..
19.) crookedeye - 01/29/2018
plus from now on i.m going to hunt smarter not harder..
20.) crookedeye - 01/29/2018
plus safty is my big issue this year..
21.) crookedeye - 01/29/2018
i would hate to find one of my buddies lying paralized or dead under there stand.. trust me i tell them to be safe every time we go hunt.

That's the key. Well, plus this:

24.) Swamp Fox - 01/29/2018
So, really, that's two things you gotta find ...
25.) bluecat - 01/29/2018
I'm a big advocate of bibs as they allow freedom to draw but also warm your core which helps keep everything warm.
26.) Triton Rich - 01/30/2018
As far as being cold all of the time, I totally understand. Just this year, it became really noticeable. Whatever the temp was, I would dress in the same layers that I have for a long time and, invariably, I would end up being cold. I even notice it just walking around the house or running out to the garage. Stuff that never bothered me before. I hate to admit it but I think it's a getting older thing......
27.) Jon - 01/30/2018
Once the temps get down under 20, I start layering and using stick on heat pads. I wear the normal scent stuff as a base layer then UA cold gear then "long John" type clothes then Sitka bibs and Sitka jacket and hat with neck gaiter when wind is an issue.
The stick on heating pads you can find at any pharmacy type store, they are made for sore backs. I stick them on my 2nd layer down on my lower back so they will keep my kidneys warm. Warm kidneys, warm body.
I have a bad back and if I start shaking, my back goes into spasm's and I'm done for the day. wearing these helps me sit longer.
28.) luv2bowhunt - 01/30/2018
I'm with Jon on the heat warmers. I used to think they weren't worth the hassle but now that I'm older I realize the value. Also, you better not get sweaty or all the clothes in the world aren't going to help much.

I do the UA cold gear base layer, another base layer on top of that. then heavyweight shirt, bibs, fleece sweatshirt, then an outer layer UA fleece jacket. If it's real cold, below 25 deg. then the handwarmers, stick on warmers on the back and sometimes the foot warmers. Also use a fleece beanie and normally a knit hat on top of that. I don't like to get cold. If I get cold I'm not having fun, and if I'm not having fun I'm done.

I'm out there for the enjoyment mainly, killing is now secondary. Don't really care much if I kill or not as long as I'm having fun.

.....and safty is important just like crOoKEdEyE said. I can't get enough of that safty.
29.) bluecat - 02/05/2018
wooltimate is not itchy at all
It is also discontinued. I emailed Cabelas and they say they don't know why.
30.) crookedeye - 02/06/2018
i dont no if its discontinued because its a season thing or the bass pro shop merging deal...usually they have great deals on the stuff every dec, janurary..and bring it back in the fall we'll see. that would be ashame if they dont sell that wooltimate or cabelas line of clothing no more..im glad i have it though.
31.) bluecat - 02/06/2018
Hope you are right. Just ordered the vest and then Cabela's cancelled the order.
