It dawned on me that we probably need a thread to voice some constructive solutions to all of this violence - or at least vent a bit. Since the democrats are focused on taking away guns from the people who aren't connected to the crime, I thought I would offer (at no additional fee) some insight.

Maybe after the next shooting, we can get all scuba divers to give up their gear. Makes about as much sense.

Of all of the recent shootings, this guy should have been the easiest one to pick out beforehand. Dozens of police calls to the house, several of them for a "mentally ill" person. A call to the FBI saying he has guns and I think he might explode. Nothing ever done about any of it. The liberals won't say mental health has anything to do with it because they don't want to stigmatize those with mental health issues. Of course, they will stigmatize the crap out of millions of gun owners, that's no problem! I admit, it will be tricky but their has to be a way to stop people who are dangerously mentally ill from having guns without trampling on the rights of everybody else. I wouldn't disagree with raising the age to buy an AR type rifle to 21 which is the age in many places for buying a hand gun. I would also agree with banning bump stocks or any other device that mimics a machine gun but the language would have to be clear to still allow simple modifications (such as a drop in trigger assembly) that don't appreciably alter the function of the weapon. There is most certainly room for improvement but I have zero faith that they'll get it right.[/B]

Raising to 21 is a red herring considering that age is not the issue. When Dems are willing to talk about raising the voting age to 21 because 18 isn't mature enough, I'll let them advance one square from GO on guns.

We don't have a (standing) draft system now, so raising the voting age is on the table, as far as I'm concerned.

Screw these people who say you can sign a contract, get married, (have sex--GASP!) volunteer for the military and vote, but you can't buy a beer or (now) buy a rifle for three or more more years.

Not so long as the gun has been rendered permanently inoperable. Otherwise it's a "destructive device" (per BATFE), and while still it's technically still possible to legally own one...your odds of doing so are somewhere between slim and none...and slim is outta' town.

I missed that Dicks caved a few years ago, but now that you mention it I sorta remember. I liked the F&S store near me, until they closed it. It was so poorly run, I could find weird stuff dirt cheap and I took max advantage. The people were good and the selection was very decent for a generic outdoor shop that was nowhere near a Bass Pro or Cabelas.

From late '79 to early '81, network TV had sensationalized "breaking news" or "news update" shit every night during the Iran hostage crisis.The show Nightline with Ted Koppel was a major culprit.

I forget the details, but since I skipped a year of high school, my classmates weren't going in a draft but I was, if we went to war. I had listened to the Vietnam War on the radio as a kid under the covers late at night while one of my uncles was over there, so I'd had enough of scary news and battle reporting pretty early.

Every time one of those Iran hostage "update" scares came on the TV, my heart went in my throat. It was never really life-and-death news, but they played it as if it was.

I finally figured out what the TV game was all about. These days I have a really low tolerance for sensationalism, and Hannity is one of the worst offenders on the right.

However, the ostrich actually won't stop yammering about guns, and spouts gibberish and nonsense 24/7 before inevitably running away when confronted with facts or an opposing viewpoint.

So, to foil the ostrich and to get him to slow down and face reality, the coyote orders a replica of a policeman cooping in his patrol car, and plans to place it behind a billboard on the highway that leads to the fake tunnel into the canyon wall. The ostrich is sure to see it as he runs away from the next confrontation, and should slow down just enough for the coyote to catch him. If he doesn't, there's that fake tunnel opening waiting, so win-win ...

I won't give the rest of the ad away, but the fake cop in his patrol car with the light on top arrives in a huge wooden crate from the ACME Company, and hilarity ensues ...

On the Laura Ingraham angle: Since I took a similar jab at David Hogg on here a few days ago, I invite him to go after my sponsors in an effort to silence me the way he is attempting to silence LI.

I am no fan of Ingraham, whom I find abrasive and often wrong-headed, even if she calls herself a conservative. Her shows could be replaced with reruns of The Roadrunner and I would be a happy camper.

But there is no reward to go after me for making essentially the same point about Hogg's failures as Ingraham made. I doubt she was nastier than I was, though I can imagine she was more passive-aggressive.

But I think I'm safe from much attention. Hogg's outrage and his boycott effort is aimed at taking a scalp, not arguing issues on their merits.

He's whining about rejections from colleges as a high-profile figure on social media. In the meantime, he's demonizing and antagonizing a lot of people who don't deserve to be demonized OR antagonized.

That Friday’s walkouts were organized by a student with little connection to gun violence shows how post-Parkland activism has morphed into a thriving national student movement. But as the movement expands, it’s also becoming clear just how hard it is to find a unified student voice. A student’s personal background—including race, class, and past connections to gun violence—shapes his or her relationship with the movement, and youth are navigating the difficult task of finding common ground. A movement that first framed itself as a call to action from young people to adults is now just as much a dialogue among different factions of the country’s youth.

When the post-Parkland movement first sprung up, some observers questioned whether the tremendous attention it garnered was attributable in part to the students’ relative affluence. Friday’s walkouts are another case of large-scale activism organized by students from privileged schools: Fewer than 4 percent of students at Murdock’s Ridgefield High receive free or reduced-price meals. Youth organizers have certainly endeavored to make their protest inclusive, demonstrating their solidarity with communities that suffer from daily gun violence in part by encouraging walkout participants to wear orange, a color that has come to symbolize gun reform after teenagers used it to memorialize a 15-year-old shot and killed in Chicago in 2015. For their part, students in Chicago planned a citywide school walkout in conjunction with Murdock’s campaign. But despite their efforts to involve schools in neighborhoods with varying income levels and racial makeups, organizers—who attend Walter Payton College Prep, a selective-enrollment magnet school, and the private Francis W. Parker School—struggled to bring the walkout to fruition at most of the city's schools.

Practical challenges aside, many students have sought to complicate the narrative attached to the walkouts—including some who've distanced themselves from them—in an effort to raise awareness about the diversity of youth experiences when it comes to gun violence. Yesterday, 20 organizations representing more than 1,000 students of color released an open letter in advance of today’s walkouts, demanding that conversations about school safety take racial-justice issues into account. The letter emphasizes that efforts to strengthen school security affect students of color at disproportionate levels.

Rosa Florez, a 17-year-old student from Oak Ridge, Florida, who helped draft the letter, told me Thursday that she was still deciding whether to participate in Friday’s walkouts. “I feel kind of disconnected from the issue at hand,” she said, stressing that school shootings deserve attention. But she worries that the walkouts could lead to school-safety measures, like more campus police, whose negative consequences disproportionately affect disadvantaged students. “The community that becomes more vulnerable with the legislation that is proposed will be my community,” she continued. “If I walk out, what legislation am I supporting?”

It’s also worth noting that students at Columbine High School are not participating. The school has commemorated the day annually by having students engage in community-service work rather than attend classes—an approach that its principal promoted this year as an alternative to walkouts. Some Columbine students expressed disappointment that the Connecticut organizers chose the anniversary of the 1999 massacre for their national protest. “This is the worst day for our community,” said Kaylee Tyner, a junior who believes in the protest’s cause and helped organize Columbine’s participation in the March 14 student walkouts. “It was like using our anniversary to push this political agenda … It could’ve been on the 19th or something,” she said. Do it for 10 years. Get FCC credit for a good deed. Circle back at the end and see if glory-hound shootings haven't fallen off the charts.

There's strong evidence to suggest that suicide is encouraged by news and romanticization of other suicides, and if there isn't some similar normalization going on with these mass shootings, I'll eat my hat.
