It dawned on me that we probably need a thread to voice some constructive solutions to all of this violence - or at least vent a bit. Since the democrats are focused on taking away guns from the people who aren't connected to the crime, I thought I would offer (at no additional fee) some insight.

Maybe after the next shooting, we can get all scuba divers to give up their gear. Makes about as much sense.
2.) Swamp Fox - 02/26/2018
It's complete idiocy over there on the leftern side. It's truly like they're retarded.

Muskets, weapons of war ---Wait ... Muskets weren't weapons of war?

The police will protect you ...Except when they won't?

Trump is Hitler? But only the government should have guns?

Trump let the mentally ill have greater access to guns. The ACLU picked this one thing to be wrong about.

The war on drugs is a failure. We'll do better with a gun ban.

Armed guards at the bank? They must care about your money. Armed guards in school? Why do you hate children?

I could go on.

And I might, after a beer.
3.) DParker - 02/26/2018
And I might, after a beer.
It'll take more than one beer for any of it to make any sense.
4.) Triton Rich - 02/26/2018
It would be quite ironic to me if this shooting turns out to be the one to lead to the typical ban this ban that gun control wave. Of all of the recent shootings, this guy should have been the easiest one to pick out beforehand. Dozens of police calls to the house, several of them for a "mentally ill" person. A call to the FBI saying he has guns and I think he might explode. Nothing ever done about any of it. The liberals won't say mental health has anything to do with it because they don't want to stigmatize those with mental health issues. Of course, they will stigmatize the crap out of millions of gun owners, that's no problem! I admit, it will be tricky but their has to be a way to stop people who are dangerously mentally ill from having guns without trampling on the rights of everybody else. I wouldn't disagree with raising the age to buy an AR type rifle to 21 which is the age in many places for buying a hand gun. I would also agree with banning bump stocks or any other device that mimics a machine gun but the language would have to be clear to still allow simple modifications (such as a drop in trigger assembly) that don't appreciably alter the function of the weapon. There is most certainly room for improvement but I have zero faith that they'll get it right.
5.) bluecat - 02/26/2018
Good points everyone.

How bout the next democratic convention they replace the armed guards with gun free zone signs. Hey, it was good enough for those kids.
6.) Swamp Fox - 02/26/2018
Raising to 21 is a red herring considering that age is not the issue. When Dems are willing to talk about raising the voting age to 21 because 18 isn't mature enough, I'll let them advance one square from GO on guns.

We don't have a (standing) draft system now, so raising the voting age is on the table, as far as I'm concerned.

Screw these people who say you can sign a contract, get married, (have sex--GASP!) volunteer for the military and vote, but you can't buy a beer or (now) buy a rifle for three or more more years.
7.) bluecat - 02/26/2018
I certainly understand both sides of the age thing, but it isn't an age thing like Swampy said. I could drive an Abrams tank and the world isn't any more dangerous.
8.) DParker - 02/26/2018
Never mind the fact that if 18 is too young to be entrusted with a rifle, it's sure as hell too young to be entrusted with determining the governing of a global superpower.
9.) Swamp Fox - 02/26/2018
I hope that these morons who are advocating for the Tide Pod-eating generation to vote will see the error of their ways when they're paying for universal I-phones and subsidized fidget spinners.

I will be living off the grid at that point, in a zero tax bracket.

You could OWN an Abrams tank if you had enough money and a very high tolerance for bureaucracy, and the world wouldn't be a more dangerous place.

16.) DParker - 02/27/2018

You can "harvest" arms, you just can't bear them.

The latest idiocy I've seen is somebody trying to make the distinction between arms and "speech."

As in:

"If the Second Amendment only applies to 18th century weapons, the First Amendment only applies to 18th century media."

"No, you imbecile. 'Arms' are specified, whereas 'speech' is much more broad."

"What about the 'free press'? Is that Gutenberg-style only, or what?"

"Crickets ..."

If anyone hires Sheriff Israel after he claimed he gave out badges and guns but has no responsibility beyond that, the only way the company's stock won't plummet is if it's another government job.

Or maybe Costco. They don't seem to care what goes on over there, from what I can tell.

We'll have to stay in touch with Hunter's family and the people who have land with Osceolas on it, and maybe with some bass fishermen and some inshore guys, but this is eventually gonna happen.

I don't know ... It's pretty flam-bouyant in South Florida, balanced by a lot of fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy in North Florida.

Not so long as the gun has been rendered permanently inoperable. Otherwise it's a "destructive device" (per BATFE), and while still it's technically still possible to legally own one...your odds of doing so are somewhere between slim and none...and slim is outta' town.

In addition to the paperwork, tax stamp and other stuff you're anticipating, you'll also need sign-off from whomever your local "Chief Law Enforcement Officer" is, at their discretion. Good luck. And even if you clear that hurdle, you'll like have one or more state/local laws ruining your party.

I missed that Dicks caved a few years ago, but now that you mention it I sorta remember. I liked the F&S store near me, until they closed it. From late '79 to early '81, network TV had sensationalized "breaking news" or "news update" shit every night during the Iran hostage crisis. The show Nightline with Ted Koppel was a major culprit.

I forget the details, but since I skipped a year of high school, my classmates weren't going in a draft but I was, if we went to war. I had listened to the Vietnam War on the radio as a kid under the covers late at night while one of my uncles was over there, so I'd had enough of scary news and battle reporting pretty early.

Every time one of those Iran hostage "update" scares came on the TV, my heart went in my throat. It was never really life-and-death news, but they played it as if it was.

I finally figured out what the TV game was all about. These days I have a really low tolerance for sensationalism, and Hannity is one of the worst offenders on the right.

My fledgling ad agency, Swampy's House of Quips and Doodles, just landed the Full Semi-Automatic Rifles account of Whynot, NC and we're working on a campaign where the good guy (a cartoon coyote) is trying to engage his arch-nemesis, an anti-gun cartoon ostrich, in the national conversation about guns that the ostrich is always saying we never have.

However, the ostrich actually won't stop yammering about guns, and spouts gibberish and nonsense 24/7 before inevitably running away when confronted with facts or an opposing viewpoint.

So, to foil the ostrich and to get him to slow down and face reality, the coyote orders a replica of a policeman cooping in his patrol car, and plans to place it behind a billboard on the highway that leads to the fake tunnel into the canyon wall. The ostrich is sure to see it as he runs away from the next confrontation, and should slow down just enough for the coyote to catch him. If he doesn't, there's that fake tunnel opening waiting, so win-win ...

I won't give the rest of the ad away, but the fake cop in his patrol car with the light on top arrives in a huge wooden crate from the ACME Company, and hilarity ensues ...

I'm just going by the time-honored rules of the English language.

I understand colloquial, accidental use of "they" when you mean a single semi-unspecified person. But it irritates the shit out of me when people use "they" purposefully for a single person because they don't want to specify sex or use the default male gender.

Hogg's more than a little off, but he was at school that day--just in a different building. He was videoing and posting commentary while hiding in a closet. Totally non-attention-seeking behavior.

I think I posted something about student objections to clear backpacks and student ID, LOL.

I read somewhere one student gun control enthusiast actually said (about the clear backpack rule) "Why should I be punished for the actions of somebody else?" or words to that effect.

March is a good month to remember why we have the right to keep and bear arms, and should protect it.

By date:

2 Texas declared its independence from Mexico (1836).

3 The Star Spangled Banner becomes the National Anthem (1931)

4 The Constitution of the United States of America goes into effect. (1789)

5 The Boston Massacre occurred. (1770)

8 President Ronald Reagan calls the USSR an "Evil Empire" (1983)

9 Ironclad ships the Monitor and the Merrimack battle in the Civil war.

15 "The Ides of March" Julius Caesar is stabbed to death by Marcus Junius Brutus. (44 B.C.)

16 The Mai Lai Massacre takes place in Vietnam. (1968)

17 On this day everyone is a little bit Irish- It's Saint Patrick's Day!

20 Harriet Beacher Stowe publishes the book Uncle Tom's Cabin . (1852)

21 The infamous Alcatraz prison is closed. (1963)

23 Patrick Henry declares "Give me liberty, or give me death!" (1775)

28 The city of Madrid falls to the forces of Francisco Franco, ending the Spanish Civil War. (1939)

30 The 15th amendment goes into effect, giving black men the right to vote. (1870)

6 Silly Putty is invented. (1950)

Silly Putty--

You're not telling me the post-war former Axis powers could have come up with it?!

And the Reds were still trying to figure out how many potatoes to make into vodka and how many to feed people to avoid starvation. The French were celebrating 99.9% of their population having joined the Resistance while collaborating with the Nazis, and the Brits were trying to figure out refrigeration so they could have some ice cream and preserve their wedding cakes.

It was up to the Americans to promote national and individual freedom, including Silly Putty.

On the Laura Ingraham angle: Since I took a similar jab at David Hogg on here a few days ago, I invite him to go after my sponsors in an effort to silence me the way he is attempting to silence LI.

I am no fan of Ingraham, whom I find abrasive and often wrong-headed, even if she calls herself a conservative. Her shows could be replaced with reruns of The Roadrunner and I would be a happy camper.

But there is no reward to go after me for making essentially the same point about Hogg's failures as Ingraham made. I doubt she was nastier than I was, though I can imagine she was more passive-aggressive.

But I think I'm safe from much attention. Hogg's outrage and his boycott effort is aimed at taking a scalp, not arguing issues on their merits.

He's whining about rejections from colleges as a high-profile figure on social media. In the meantime, he's demonizing and antagonizing a lot of people who don't deserve to be demonized OR antagonized.

When someone with a high profile mocks him, he gets pissy.

At 10 o’clock on Friday morning, thousands of students across the country commemorated a moment that not one of them was alive to experience: the shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado that killed 13 people 19 years ago today. That Friday’s walkouts were organized by a student with little connection to gun violence shows how post-Parkland activism has morphed into a thriving national student movement. But as the movement expands, it’s also becoming clear just how hard it is to find a unified student voice. A student’s personal background—including race, class, and past connections to gun violence—shapes his or her relationship with the movement, and youth are navigating the difficult task of finding common ground. A movement that first framed itself as a call to action from young people to adults is now just as much a dialogue among different factions of the country’s youth.

When the post-Parkland movement first sprung up, some observers questioned whether the tremendous attention it garnered was attributable in part to the students’ relative affluence. Friday’s walkouts are another case of large-scale activism organized by students from privileged schools: Fewer than 4 percent of students at Murdock’s Ridgefield High receive free or reduced-price meals. Youth organizers have certainly endeavored to make their protest inclusive, demonstrating their solidarity with communities that suffer from daily gun violence in part by encouraging walkout participants to wear orange, a color that has come to symbolize gun reform after teenagers used it to memorialize a 15-year-old shot and killed in Chicago in 2015. For their part, students in Chicago planned a citywide school walkout in conjunction with Murdock’s campaign. But despite their efforts to involve schools in neighborhoods with varying income levels and racial makeups, organizers—who attend Walter Payton College Prep, a selective-enrollment magnet school, and the private Francis W. Parker School—struggled to bring the walkout to fruition at most of the city's schools.

[...]

Practical challenges aside, many students have sought to complicate the narrative attached to the walkouts—including some who've distanced themselves from them—in an effort to raise awareness about the diversity of youth experiences when it comes to gun violence. Yesterday, 20 organizations representing more than 1,000 students of color released an open letter in advance of today’s walkouts, demanding that conversations about school safety take racial-justice issues into account. The letter emphasizes that efforts to strengthen school security affect students of color at disproportionate levels.

Rosa Florez, a 17-year-old student from Oak Ridge, Florida, who helped draft the letter, told me Thursday that she was still deciding whether to participate in Friday’s walkouts. “I feel kind of disconnected from the issue at hand,” she said, stressing that school shootings deserve attention. But she worries that the walkouts could lead to school-safety measures, like more campus police, whose negative consequences disproportionately affect disadvantaged students. “The community that becomes more vulnerable with the legislation that is proposed will be my community,” she continued. “If I walk out, what legislation am I supporting?”

It’s also worth noting that students at Columbine High School are not participating. The school has commemorated the day annually by having students engage in community-service work rather than attend classes—an approach that its principal promoted this year as an alternative to walkouts. Some Columbine students expressed disappointment that the Connecticut organizers chose the anniversary of the 1999 massacre for their national protest. “This is the worst day for our community,” said Kaylee Tyner, a junior who believes in the protest’s cause and helped organize Columbine’s participation in the March 14 student walkouts. “It was like using our anniversary to push this political agenda … It could’ve been on the 19th or something,” she said. A student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland told The New York Times that MSD administrators are urging students not to walk out out of respect for the Columbine students.

For Murdock, who said many in the Columbine community expressed support for the Friday walkouts, this iteration of the youth movement is ultimately aimed at celebrating today’s students and the movement that’s empowered young people across the country. And perhaps these debates among young people over how and when to make their voices heard are a manifestation of that empowerment.

[ ...]

Now, in April, it seems that students are doing more than contemplating: They are debating, arguing, and reframing the conversation. Maybe that’s a sign that the movement is the most powerful it’s been yet—or maybe it's a sign that it's turning into something less unified and more complicated.

This is no different from any of the other modern leftist "protests" in that the participation numbers the media keeps touting don't reflect any significant groundswell of principled support for the ostensible cause, but rather an amalgamation of various activists all trying to piggy-back onto the protest issue du jour in an attempt to get attention for their pet cause. That's why you see so many signs pushing disparate issues that have nothing to do with the one tht the protest is supposed to be about.

Well, let me qualify that a bit by saying that these protests differ from the others in that their participation levels are also significantly boosted by the fact that most school kids will seize any excuse to get out of class...not to mention the desire to do whatever their peers are doing.
"It's a Long Way from Amphioxus", a parody of this song written by Philip H. Pope, is sung by students and scientists as an affirmation of evolution. It was originally recorded by Sam Hinton,[14] and is the official song of the Biological Sciences Division at the University of Chicago.[15] The chorus goes,

It's a long way from Amphioxus, It's a long way to us.
It's a long way from Amphioxus to the meanest human cuss.
Well, it's goodbye to fins and gill slits, and it's hello teeth and hair!
It's a long, long way from Amphioxus, but we all came from there.

I see. So itís the wrong message to refuse to enforce a law that you want to pass, but itís a principled stand for justice if you refuse to enforce federal laws on immigration? The tone deaf nature of these folks is truly something to observe.

In the meantime, the sanctuary for gun owners idea seems to be spreading. One member of the Effingham County Board is quoted as saying that nearly 20 other counties from around the state and other parts of the nation have requested copies of resolution they passed. Is this a positive trend for democracy? Thatís hard to say. Itís troubling to cheer for anyone who is refusing to enforce the law of the land. But when so many cities and states are refusing to help uphold laws they disagree with, turnabout begins to look more and more like fair play.
