My wife and I had this discussion just the other night. When our kids were small and we were driving them around, they were always on our minds. You thought about whether they were warm enough or cool enough back there. Whether the radio was too loud, whether the sun was shining too much on them, you watched them in the rear view mirror, you worried if they dropped their chew toys or sippie cup. There was never a time during a car ride that they left my mind completely.

What is wrong with this f-ing country now? Everyone needs to get over themselves and be a freaking parent.

Some things never change throughout the ages. There are parents who cherish their children and dearly wanted them in this world in the first place. These parents go to the wall throughout their children's life no matter how old their children become. On the flip side there are parents who weren't endowed with the wisdom to realize they should NEVER become parents. Sadly, bad parents are sometimes responsible for creating a farm team of bad future citizens but not always. There are exceptions.

The immediacy of every possible action, emotion, unformed thought and loosely aggregated opinion speeds around the world in seconds thanks to technology and social media. Add this to a long brewing divisiveness and add a healthy dose of hedonism and what we are left with is a rolling battle on multiple fronts that knows no end. All the good people can do is stay steadfast.

I'm thinking of modeling my retirement on Jeremiah Johnson. :wink
5.) luv2bowhunt - 07/24/2018
OK, point taken. There have always been good parents and idiots.

So then, why has it become so important that the news stations have to devote segments on how to keep from forgetting your children in the car? Or, how to use a grill, or how to use a fryer, or how to keep from stressing yourself out from social media?

It seems that someone isn't passing down the common sense gene or these news people think we're all stupid sheep that have no logical thought process. Which it seems many are today or was it always been that way all along.........I don't know.

Screw it, I just want to start hanging treestands.
6.) Bob Peck - 07/24/2018
Which it seems many are today or was it always that way all along.........I don't know.
Of course you know. It's always been this way.

I watched "Idiocracy" again because of DP's post and while it's a stupid silly joke of a movie (in the vein of Dumb and Dumber) it was highly entertaining. Mike Judge and Eton Cohen put together something in 2006 that is still poignant 11 years later. Funny with a backbone of truths.

The immediacy of this wide variety of content (web, social media, etc) combined with a device that seems to be another appendage to our body (cell phone) is a Ying and Yang. It can be a dangerous combination or a life saver. This content is in our face 24/7/365. It's either an addiction in that we react to every notification tone or in my case I deliberately turn it off or leave it in the car. We cannot escape being reminded daily of the generalized idiocy of our species. The peddlers of content crave sensational, cute and curious content. They know this captures the eyeballs which is what the revenue stream is all about and always has been.
Screw it, I just want to start hanging treestands.
Funny. I already have all my stands hung because I never take them out. This is one of the benefits of having exclusive hunting rights on private property I don't own. I check them, repair them in the field, replace them when needed, swap ratchet straps but almost never hang new ones unless I'm on a new property. I'm more inclined to build natural material ground blinds, brush hog logging roads and clear shooting lanes.

I did a few overnight "destination" recon trips in the Blue Ridge this summer and located some excellent, hard-to-get-to, off-the-beaten-path hunting locations. I study Google Earth for hours and hours, note the destination GPS coordinates and hike in. Sometimes it's a total bust, sometimes it reveals some small slices of heaven-on-earth. I look forward to those slices.

Now you're talking my language. I am constantly doing the same thing to find out of the way places. What I've found is anything over 3/4 of a mile eliminates 95% of bowhunters. Make it a way back in area with dense mountain laurel or thick overgrown clearcut (my personal preference) and you pretty much eliminate 100% of other bowhunters.

My spring and summer scouting obsession has been with buck bedding areas. I scouted in Feb. and found a couple of what I am pretty sure are preferred buck beds. I went back in last weekend and hung a camera above one of these beds. This bed had been used for a long time, matted down, full of hair, the same way it looked when I first found it in Feb. I will not check that camera until some time in Oct. when the wind is right and no deer should be laying there.

I haven't been so excited about a scouting camera setup in a long time. This particular bed would be used on any kind of south wind. Can't wait to check the pics and if a buck shows up, compare it to wind direction. Maybe it will be a total bust or not one particular deer, or even a doe, but can't wait to check it.

If this works out I'll be doing the same thing at other beds I've found. It's the learning about deer behavior that really trips my trigger in scouting.
Now you're talking my language. I am constantly doing the same thing to find out of the way places.
I am honestly more challenged by safely navigating in/out regardless of distance (longest trek was a one-way 9 miles) and finding natural beauty than I am finding game to shoot. This is mostly cuz I'm old, increasingly lazy and not enthusiastic about a heart attack hauling out a deer when I'm in deep.

I prepare in an OCD kinda way for a day hunt the same as a potential over-nighter (expected or not). You never know when the you-know-what hits the fan. From first aid to communication equipment to survival gear to food to GPS coordinates posted on the fridge ... I am ready for over nights if that's how the experience plays out. Sounds weird I know but deer sign is somewhat down the list but not completely ignored. If I hit the trifecta (challenge, view & game) I'm a fulfilled human.

I never watch local TV news if left to my own devices, but it was on in the background somewhere I was in the last few weeks. They had a segment on washing your hands when eating outdoors: How and why to do it. Soap and water was recommended, and paper towels were mentioned. I stared in amazement.

It must have been leading up to one of the summer holiday weekends and considered a timely public service.

I pity the producer who pitched the idea for being a pea-brain, but they put it on the program because she was pretty, probably.

So, did I mention I never watch local TV news?

I've been thinking about asking Alex to add a sub-forum for vaping. That could generate some traffic. I know a lot of people have questions about what flavor nicotine to try. We could answer all their questions and some of them would inevitably become hooked on bowhunting second-hand, just because we were so helpful and they were exposed.

By editing herself with bits of an interview Ocasio-Cortez gave to PBS’ Margaret Hoover a little over a week ago, Stuckey created a satirical spot which was quickly denounced by Ocasio-Cortez and quite a few blue checkmark reporters on the left. Here’s the clip. See how long it takes you to figure out this is satire:

This Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez video made a lot of progressives forget how satire works
The clip went up yesterday and this morning a NY Times reporter stated the obvious, i.e. the satire clip isn’t real.

Buzzfeed was all over the case of the “doctored” video:

CRTV, which created the video, did not say why they created the video. In an emailed statement, they said that, “Satire has a long tradition and plays a valuable role in political discourse. Many comedians, late night hosts, and TV programs like Saturday Night Live have used satire for decades. We love Allie’s creative work and look forward to liberals feigning outrage at satire in future videos.”

Just a little over a week ago, a different Buzzfeed author praised Sacha Baron Cohen’s new show which uses, wait for it…satirical interviews to mock its subjects. And get this, he doesn’t wear a big sign saying “satire” when he interviews people under false pretenses.

A Vox reporter called the satire “reprehensible.”

Many will not notice that it is spliced. Ppl share things without doing research all the time. In the era of fake news, 104 days from an election, we shouldn't force them to do research on something as simple as the veracity of a candidate interview. This really is intensely stupid. The kind of comedy interview Stuckey is doing here is clearly identifiable as a descendant of Comedy Central style of editing in which an interview subject is asked questions for hours and then the host edits it down to 3 minutes of clever non-sequiturs and blank expressions. The left has made a number of people major celebrities for practicing this style of misleading ambush comedy. Progressives love this stuff!

Except when someone on the right does it to one of their heroes. Then, suddenly they all forget how satire works. What is this strange thing we’ve only seen done on Comedy Central every night for the past decade?! You can bet that after writing articles about this right-wing outrage, all of these folks will go home and tune into Samantha Bee. What utter hypocrites.

Finally, it’s worth noting that Ocasio-Cortez did herself no favors in the real interview on which this satire was based. From not knowing how the unemployment rate is calculated, to her musing on the occupation of Palestine. You could argue the satire video above is much less embarrassing than the real video. Enjoy this very real and unedited interview trainwreck on Israel.
