1.) Jon - 09/03/2019
I figured I'd change things up here and start talking about hunting on huntingcountry, that'd be a novel idea ehh?

Season opened on the 1st, I'm going out tomorrow for my first outing. Temps are still in the mid to upper 80's which makes it difficult to think about hunting. Been working my (our) asses of at the leased farms trying to get things ready. We did pick up a new area on one of our farms, was only hunted by the farmer in years past and he and his buddy only shot bucks over 150". It's an area of about 150acres and the woods borders farm fields on one side and marsh on the other which the deer love to travel through. We have 6 elevated boxes on the marsh side and 5 ladders on the field side. Looking forward to hunting the new area this year.
My land is pretty quiet, I planted sweet corn but the surrounding farm land is all in standing corn still and my corn is brown, theirs is green due to using the pivots for water all summer. Deer don't care about my piddly corn. maybe after the corn is down, I'll start running the feeder again and bring them is. Only have a few decent bucks on camera, all at night and sporadic.
I'm still running Covert cameras, just got a new cellular one to add to my original cellular and 6 other traditional cameras. I see Spypoint has a cellular camera now for around $150, that's cheap!

You guys even hunt anymore?

Gee, that's rough.
Yea that sucks BUT you aren't hunting either
Nope. I'm waiting for it to dip into the mid to upper '80s.

BOOM
6.) DParker - 09/03/2019

I'm just bustin' yer huevos, Jon. Just like my wife's friends and family in Wisconsin do every time she complains about how "cold" it is here during the winter. "Oooooh. 38 degrees ya' say? Yeah, that's almost long-pants weather 'der. Almost."

Well, OK...there are no huevos involved there, but...

But seriously, it's pretty miserable in the field right now. Bugs, snakes (though they're not as much of a problem), poison ivy every-damned-where. Even sitting out in the milo fields dove hunting (which just started this week) is a challenge because you have sweat dripping in your eyes by the time the sun comes up. Bow season starts the first weekend of October, and it's probably going to be uncomfortable even then.
7.) Jon - 09/03/2019
I was playin along. I know it's miserable hot in Tx and I would melt.
The chiggers and ticks here are nasty but the snakes aren't poisonous and the poison ivy/oak is easy to avoid. The weather will break sooner than you know because time waits for no-one.
I'll wait for December to come hunt Tx, at least the temps cool off to 65 by then!
8.) DParker - 09/03/2019
The chiggers and ticks here are nasty...
We have chiggers here as well (in fact the town nearby the area I bow hunt most often has an annual "Chigger Fest"), but they're usually not bad, and I've been lucky enough to avoid them completely except for 1 that got it's chompers into my arm a couple seasons ago. I was amazed at how much it hurt given how tiny those little bastards are. I can't imagine getting into a swarm of them.
I'll wait for December to come hunt Tx, at least the temps cool off to 65 by then!
If we're lucky!

9.) bluecat - 09/03/2019
Well, we had it tough.

Every day we used to have to get up 5 hours before we went to bed, harvest the chiggers and smoke them over a fire with wood chopped using a herring. The chiggers would have to feed all 29 of us all crammed into a shoe box. Then our parents would kill us and dance about on our graves.
10.) Jon - 09/04/2019
But we don't care if this site ever talks about hunting, I mean between the 4 folks who check in, who actually needs hunting talk on a hunting site, right?

I gave it a shot
11.) bluecat - 09/04/2019
You did what you could.

All I know is skip work and be within killing range of an evacuation route when the neighbors are cutting the corn.

I'll try to post some pics and stories of early-season kills from my area, but most of them are rifle, and even the bow pics went over like lead balloons the last couple of years I tried it, so ...

13.) Swamp Fox - 09/05/2019
If anyone's interested and has a lot of time on their hands, I have a comment one might put to use about hunting early season from pre-dawn late into the morning/mid-day...

Also, I think a lot of people talk themselves out of hunting hot weather when they don't need to.

If you have the right spot (!) and can control your scent (change of clothes, etc) mornings and (yes!) afternoons can be done.
14.) Bob Peck - 09/06/2019
But we don't care if this site ever talks about hunting
I've always cared which became a problem.

I sought counseling for my depression when after years of effort in the trenches things slid downhill and have stayed there. These days, I check in for less than 30-seconds (my record is less than 10-seconds) with mildly elevated hopes that things might turn around but noooo. In the rare event someone (visitor or regular) posts meaningful or hunting related it becomes hijacked in nanoseconds.
I mean between the 4 folks who check in, who actually needs hunting talk on a hunting site, right? I gave it a shot
That's not true. I can log in in a jiffy, but it takes several jiffies for me to hijack even the simplest mumblings. I like to think about things first.

I'd say mathematically it takes between 20 nano seconds and maybe 2700 pico seconds for any hijacking to go on when you've got between four and six guys google-eyeing a topic lying out there on the table like a dead fish, collecting flies.

Lack of imagination seems to be a bi-product of the public school system in Pennsylvania.

Examples are all over the internet. I would speak to your legislators.

It's "farther." As you wrote.

Good job. Mass. education may be holding its own.

"Farther" relates to distance. "Further" is a matter of degree.

English is a funny language.

I have nothing further to say at this time.

I think it is a tree limb quiver, they were the only ones who made blood trail camo at the time I bought the bow. That bow was the first one I ever color matched the accessories. Deer don't seem to care much it seems.
Popped a doe last night.
Hooah! Go Jon, Go!

Confidence building is for rookies which you are not. This was clearly a product test to see if a bow that looks like it belongs in a circus or house of ill repute can shoot as well as the same bow in camo. I see what you did there.

Alex is the one who isn't real, I'm running the place now.

If this CWD keeps going like it is in PA, I'll be hunting in VA with you soon. Ridiculous how it's going here.
55.) Jon - 09/27/2019
We were just talking here about CWD or EHS having a comeback. The summer has been so dry that any low area absolutely draws in the deer. I have a ditch that runs around my property, it generally has anywhere from 2-6' of water in it. Right now, there is one spot that is wet, not even holding water but just moisture. The deer are in that damp area trying to get water everyday.
One of my leases has a 5ac farm pond, I sat there Weds and watched every different type of animal visit the pond and take a drink. Thankfully, it's large enough to always have water.

I haven't had a pic of a buck in three weeks, only pigs, the best I can tell I have 4 different groups that come every night, not a single daylight pic since I killed my second one three weeks ago. The only thing that eats my corn during daylight is the neighbors two dogs every morning when the feeder feeds.

Good for you, Jon. We have just this weekend left (for deer, then we switch to squirrels and hogs), and I've seen exactly one deer in the woods...and even then all I saw was it's ass-end as it bolted from cover and ran as I was walking in.

I think next year I'm going to finally break down and spend the money to lease some hunting land. It has gradually become pointless to hunt the public WMAs in this area.
77.) Swamp Fox - 01/02/2020

Nice job Jon. What's the season tally so far?

Still at it until Saturday. Hard to believe I've been at it hard for 3 months and only two deer donated. I blew two chip shots with the bow and two chip shots with the muzzleloader. All mental errors proving (as if I needed proof) that if your head is not in the game it's game over.

Bob, that makes 5 so far. I've donated 2 to FHFH and gave 2 to a friend who doesn't hunt but loves venison and I kept 1 for my freezer.
Still have this month left and still have tags available. I'd like to pop a few does on my own property with help from a few friends. We also have to try and thin some from one of our lease farms, I'm taking the pistol out for a walk tomorrow to see if i can get one with it. Not sure yet if I'll bring the 357 or 44mag.
