When we loaded him in the truck it was a balmy 1 degree with wind. He was shot in North Central Nebraska on Veteran's Day. It had just snowed which helped in the trailing. The little brown mark on it's side is the broadhead beneath the skin.

So, high entry and no exit meant about a teaspoon of blood for a 100 yards. Luckily it had snowed and I was able to watch where he went into the woods. He expired pretty quickly as I had gotten lung. Nice out-of-focus picture to remember him by. My phone would not work as it was so cold so my friend took these pics. Argg.

Decided to take a picture of a spike that was nosing around earlier when my phone was working. Notice it is in focus.

Nice shot, Poot!

There was a buck that came by earlier that was nicer. I missed and thankfully did not wound him.

When I clicked the release, the arrow did not leave right away (maybe half a second). There was just enough delay to move the bow and miss the deer (not on purpose though). Now the interesting thing is that this happened twice last year on deer. Point, Click and Shi#.

At first I blamed the release. Checked it for grass seeds and whatnot. Functioned perfectly. So after the missed buck on Monday, my confidence was gone. I sat there pulling the string back a few inches to try and get the release to fail. It did not. I then got out a spare release from my pack. I made a mental note that whatever was happening I needed to punch it (which I'm not used to doing or want to do).

I'd used the release in the summer without incident. Then it dawned on me that all three misses were missed under 10 degrees. I thought maybe the string loop had stiffened up so that it wasn't exiting through the calipers - even though my releases are single caliper releases. The string loop was complimentary and was put on by the bow shop when I changed string. It's not the loop brand I normally use.

Has anyone heard of anything like this? I'm still not sure what is happening. I don't think I've developed the yips.

Hijacking threads is a full time job.

That look ... LOL

Great song live, BTW ... LOL

Cat of Blue, I would surmise that the release of note could possibly have some type of lube that hardens significantly during extreme cold weather, causing the delay of caliper operation.
My suggestion is to use another release and completely tear down and clean the offending release (if possible) for future use.

I appreciate your input. I think what I need to do this winter is pick a really cold day and go out and shoot a bit at some targets to determine if it's release or loop or me.

I see someone has forgotten the first rule of shooting (applies to both firearms and archery). It's always the equipment's fault.

That said...

Jon, would something like a graphite lubricant work better at very low temps (assuming that's not already what's being used)?
12.) Jon - 11/21/2019
The majority of releases in the past 15 years have greaseless bearings and only use grease in the scissor portion of the hinge. I'd say that graphite lube would be the only type that should be used. I certainly would use any liquid based lubricant.

Did some shooting yesterday and was able to reproduce the problem. It appears that the problem was with me and I equate it to flinching before a gunshot. It is probably the best news as I can regain confidence in my equipment but just need to focus more and not worry about watching the shot.

Watch the spot. Watch the arrow to the spot, but don't peek.

Be the ball... LOL

Practice great form, and endeavor to persevere.

That's all I've got ...

15.) bluecat - 01/08/2020
I'd sure hate to see that string get wrapped around that flashlight. Other than that I like her form...
16.) Swamp Fox - 01/08/2020
She might like the string wrapped around the flashlight. I don't know ...

I'm just sayin' ...
17.) bluecat - 01/08/2020
I said flashlight, not headlights.

He needs a good "system" for his cell phone, and some other guy is trying to tell him how to "run" it ...

LOL
22.) bluecat - 01/18/2020
Makes more sense now. I like forums with people that have lives, lol
23.) Swamp Fox - 01/18/2020
Whoever marries the guy who replied "ziplock bag system" is a winner ... I don't care who he is.

WD 40 and duct tape is also a system.
