[I]The following is an except from a feature article I just finished. I thought I'd share knowing full well I'm risking the usual & immediate hijacking, joke telling, diversions, tangents on the odd chance it might serve as a "heads up" to a reality I never thought possible in gun and hunting friendly state like Virginia.[/I]
When we moved to Virginia with our family of five in tow to work for Parker Bows it was a HUGE deal making the decision to uproot a reasonably comfortable life in Upstate New York leaving all our extended family behind for a location where these Yankees knew absolutely no one.
There was no real compelling reason to leave Upstate NY other than to pursue what we thought at the time was a great career move that had the potential to shave at least a decade off our retirement horizon. At the time, we reasoned the move would be an honest and new refreshing adventure. Besides, we'd be leaving behind the ultra-restrictive laws and stupid high taxes channeling that money back into the family coffers and oh yeah, there were those Blue Ridge mountains!
Life was great for a number of years. Not utopic by any means but then the formerly die-hard red state of Virginia voted in Barack Obama. What? Huh? How did that happen? I never bought his whole "change" and "hope" message. I was brought up to believe that "hope" while important was not a strategy. I took note a majority of Virginians voted but brushed it off as an aberration.

[I]Straight up I'm not nor is anyone in my immediate family "political" and no way in hell are any of us partisan. I'm personally not a fan (and never have been) of the two party system. I guess I'm an old school boomer who believes you should vote your conscience and stand behind the person you think will do the best job. Instead, our system asks us to vote for this person who sucks or the other person who sucks. If the person you vote for is not affiliated with the two-party suck they'll never win and as detractors will tell you "It's a wasted vote favoring one or the other candidates who both suck."[/I]
Then it happened again. Virginians voted Obama to a second term. Uh oh. Now I'm worried.
In the 2016 presidential election Hillary carried Virginia with a 49.7% plurality in the popular vote against Trump, who carried 44.4%. Should I vote for this person who sucks or the other person who sucks?
As of January 1, 2020 the liberal Democrats now are the majority of the Virginia house and senate. Oh shitake!
Just as Trump has looked at everything Obama did and has attempted or has overturned it by legislation or executive order so too have Virginia Dems passed laws laws faster than the speed of light with regard to gun control (aka gun restriction) legislation. Most of us saw this cloud gathering for years and have been bracing for impact by buying ammunition, magazines and weapons we don't need but are fearful will someday will turn us into felons like my family and friends back in Upstate NY.
Now HB961 [url]https://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?201+sum+HB961[/url] has passed the the Virginia House of Delegates and being sent to the Virginia Senate where the Dems have only a 3 Senator majority. You really should read every single sentence in this legislation because if you don't think it can happen in your gun-loving conservative state, wake up. If it could happen here in VA, it could happen anywhere.
Bottom line? NIMBY (not in my backyard) is dead in your front yard, side yard and backyard.
Assault weapon ban:
a.
After July 1, 2020 this law prohibits any person from importing, selling, transferring, manufacturing, purchasing, possessing, or transporting an assault firearm. A violation is a Class 6 felony.
b.
The bill prohibits a dealer from selling, renting, trading, or transferring from his inventory an assault firearm to any person.
c.
Any person who legally owns an assault firearm, large-capacity firearm magazine, silencer, or trigger activator on July 1, 2020, may retain possession until January 1, 2021. During that time, such person shall (i) render the assault firearm, large-capacity firearm magazine, silencer, or trigger activator inoperable; (ii) remove the assault firearm, large-capacity firearm magazine, silencer, or trigger activator from the Commonwealth; (iii) transfer the assault firearm, large-capacity firearm magazine, silencer, or trigger activator to a person outside the Commonwealth who is not prohibited from possessing it; or (iv) surrender the assault firearm, large-capacity firearm magazine, silencer, or trigger activator to a state or local law-enforcement agency.
d.
The bill further states that any person who legally owns an assault firearm on July 1, 2020, may retain possession of such assault firearm after January 1, 2021, if such person has obtained a permit from the Department of State Police to possess an assault firearm in accordance with procedures established in the bill. [Read: You can keep your guns if we give you a permit but you'll have to identify the weapons, including serial numbers and we'll then mandate the "Department of State Police to enter the name and description of a person issued a permit in the Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) so that the permit's existence and current status will be made known to the law-enforcement personnel accessing VCIN for investigative purposes." In other words, we'll know where all the weapons are for confiscation at a later date.

I've been following...with much dismay...the goings-on in VA since the 2016 election. There are a great many in your state who are doing everything they can to fight back, but in the near-term I fear it will not be enough. The demographics have shifted sufficiently that it appears that the local ballot box will not afford any remedy, and the best hope for one will be an eventual appeal before a somewhat more sympathetic SCOTUS in the next year or two.
And yeah, the two-party system has been a "lesser of two evils" Hobson's choice for far too long now.

So far 29 of the 95 counties in Virginia have declared themselves 2nd Amendment Sanctuary cities. I live in one of those counties. Not much protection but better than nothing.
Actual comparisons to New York State (my home state) where similar Draconian measures were implemented, reveals that only 13% of the estimated populace may have voluntarily surrendered weaponry.

Just discovered NJ who also has had an assault weapon and high cap magazine ban (10+ rounds of any type) ban has officially stated through the NJ State Police that since the ban became law effective Jan 01, 2019 exactly ZERO high cap magazines have been surrendered to them for destruction.
According to Sgt Kristina Pados of the NJ State Police:
[I]"Short of going door to door there is no way to proactively enforce the law. Law enforcement has not and are not planning on using this tactic. We have not received guidance from NJ Attorney General Gubir Grewal's office on how to enforce the ban." [/I]

Not complaining. I'll take every little victory. 4 of the 10 that voted against the bill advancing to a senate vote were dems which is mildly reassuring. This type of legislation will most assuredly ressurect in the house of delegates every year in a different format.

Delaware has been following this closely since our current governor is a card carrying communist who wants to take every gun away from our citizens. He and "Moms who demand action" (all 12 of them who come from NJ) have intimate meetings to form the anti-gun movement and take pictures together on the stairs of congress.....
Anyway, I was glad to see that calmer heads prevailed but this only means a stronger attack next time.

He and "Moms who demand action" (all 12 of them who come from NJ) have intimate meetings to form the anti-gun movement and take pictures together on the stairs of congress.....
