Post your favorites here.

Since I rarely go to movie theaters and don't do cable or satellite or on-line or streaming or whatever the hell, I am interested in anything after Monty Python's Holy Grail in 1974 ...

I figure most movies since then just suck and aren't worth turning myself inside out to peek at. That's my impression from sampling. I can name exceptions.

Anyone one who mentions Star Wars is automatically disqualified, tho ...

What movies should I go looking for on my cell phone if I were stranded at a dessert island in a nice restaurant during a riot?

This is a new one that has caught my attention as an English Literature nut ... The retold tale of Sir Gawain of Arthurian legend:

The Green Knight ...

I don't think there's a serious argument to be made against the position that the late '60s through the late '70s were the golden years of pop culture in the U.S., especially when it comes to film and music. That's not to say that there haven't been great examples of both to come from other time periods. Indeed, some of my favorite old flicks were from much earlier years (the Thin Man series, for instance). But the decade of the '70s, including a few years prior to it seems to have produced the highest concentration of truly memorable works (and a fair amount of crap as well, to be sure). That said...

I rewatched both Paper Moon and The Last Picture Show last night. With all of the vacuous orgy-of-CGI garbage we're treated to these days it's always nice to be reminded that character-development, acting and well-crafted creative story telling were once common fare in U.S. cinema.

Yes there is! :wink:grin:

Never saw The Last Picture Show. I will put it on my list.

I vaguely remember Paper Moon but I'm not sure why I watched it, based on my very foggy impression of it.

I remember it as a little artsy and literary --not that there's anything wrong with that --and I'd probably get something out of it if I concentrated a second time.

So I guess if a girl I liked wanted to watch it while eating crackers in bed, I would not object ...

Which is prolly how I got in trouble the first time, to be honest ...

I think I'd like to see A River Runs Through It.

I've read the story (and the larger work that contains it) and it's fantastic for its flavor of a certain time in the rural West.

I suspect you're remembering something else. It was filmed in B&W, but wasn't even remotely artsy or literary. In fact I don't think you can legally apply those descriptors to anything Burton Gilliam was in.

6.) Swamp Fox - 07/31/2021
You could be right.

What was the movie what's-her-name was in?
7.) Swamp Fox - 07/31/2021
I'm thinking Jodie Foster ...

Fill me in ...

It's amazing what she's been in ...
8.) Swamp Fox - 07/31/2021
The Paper Moon I remember was kind of a girl-coming-of-age story ... Or something like that ...

Child celebrity actress is a definite, though ...
9.) Swamp Fox - 07/31/2021
927 movie enthusiasts right now, for those playing along at home ...

This is like, like, a question CrOokEdeYe would ask ...

:omg:

God help us at this point ....
11.) DParker - 07/31/2021
I'm thinking Jodie Foster ...
Definitely not Paper Moon. That was Tatum O'Neal (daughter of her co-star, Ryan).
Fill me in ...

Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore?
Taxi Driver?
12.) Swamp Fox - 07/31/2021
Paper Moon and Tatum O'Neil is what I'm remembering, but obviously I'm remembering it wrong ... LOL

So: Should I watch it again? :pop:

Jodie Foster was on Mayberry RFD, apparently, BTW, but I missed it .... :bang:

I mean, if you're like me, sitting up late waiting for the Benadryl to kick in...why not?
15.) Swamp Fox - 07/31/2021
LOL ...

It's the blue light ... Curses!

Apparently we weren't made to deal with blue light until about a billion years ago, so we've got that going against us, which sucks ...
16.) Swamp Fox - 07/31/2021
Believe it or not, I don't think I've seen any of the Godfather movies all the way though ....

Might have sat through Scarface ....

Kill Bill was a mess. Never understood the attraction.
17.) Swamp Fox - 07/31/2021
Holding steady well above 900 ...

I'm almost afraid to bring up gladiator movies ...

Which, by the way, Gladiator is one of the best movies (and best soundtracks) of all time ...

However, I have seen it a million times, so I want to know which gladiator movies you all like ... :wink
18.) Swamp Fox - 07/31/2021
Whoops ... Mentioned gladiator movies and lost 125 readers immediately ...

They just don't want to admit how much they like movies about gladiators ...
19.) Swamp Fox - 07/31/2021
Now down to 125 readers total ... This is a disaster!

What was that movie where the skyscraper went up in flames?

Inferno?

Naked Gun?
20.) Swamp Fox - 07/31/2021
Huh!

One hour later:

Speaking of which, have you seen Rochelle Rochelle, a young girl's strange, erotic journey from Milan to Minsk?

Plus 11's, which look like a mere two thumbs up if you graph them out, unfortunately ... But still, +11's ...
you no her name..she wore that purple skirt
Are we talking about what's-her-name?
28.) Swamp Fox - 08/04/2021
JoJo Rabbit is the other movie I'd say is tied for # 1 with The Green Knight on my must-see list ...

Stay tuned, though ... I'm still thinking this through ...
