1.) bluecat - 09/24/2021

Several years ago, we had some trees taken down that were too big for me to do comfortably. I cut most of them up for firewood. When I came to a giant white elm, it was just too perfect of a tree to burn. It was over 2' in diameter and straight as a string for 10+ feet. I decided to see if I could get it milled.
After doing some research I found someone that does this as a side business and had him cut it into 3" slabs.

After the slabs were cut, he put it in his kiln until the moisture was within limits. I then found someone who makes furniture and was developing a local reputation. When my wife and I were picking out the slab to be used, I chose a really straight piece with no abnormalities. The gal that refinished the furniture convinced me that a piece that had some distress to it would look even better. I'm glad I listened.
2.) DParker - 09/24/2021
That's pretty cool. May I ask what the total cost was for the milling and furniture makin'?
3.) bluecat - 09/24/2021
The milling was 600.00. The problem was getting that giant log to the corner of our property so he could pick it up on his flatbed. Our neighbor was able to grab it with a backhoe. The price also included putting it in his kiln which was pretty cool. It was basically a small shed that he had rigged some shelving and thermostats and blowers. From memory, when the temp got over a certain temp, it exhausted all the hot air out of the shed which would carry the moisture as a payload. Or maybe it was moisture driven, I can't remember.

The table was 400.00 but that was because we supplied the wood. She is making me a desk right now and I know it's going to be considerably more. The legs I got off the web and are https://www.diyhairpinlegs.com/
they were around 60.00 I think.

If that all works out we might get a dining room table made.
4.) bluecat - 09/24/2021
You see furniture like that on the web for some crazy money. If the wood is "spalted" it's worth a small fortune.

I thought mine was spalted one time, but my girlfriend didn't see the value in it.

Anyway, a quick trip to the doctor cleared it right up.

Not faulty, spaulty.

I got some wood spalted one time.
It cost me way more than a dime.
The price that I paid
That time to get laid
Was worth every penny to rhyme.
You have me cornfused with The Bard of Omaha, who besides having shingles also has a deep connection with Bacon ...

(But don't we all?)
19.) Swamp Fox - 09/30/2021
OK, so we don't all have shingles ... I was focusing in on the Bacon bit ....

I do have to say I was expecting some points for the Bacon bit bit ... :tap:

LOL
27.) bluecat - 10/02/2021
It was just a lot of fluff. It didn't really make it for me.

+ 6 for Bacon bits. If you had connected Sir Francis Bacon to Kevin Bacon, I would have awarded you a shrubbery.

Speaking of which: The Bard of Omaha sent me some pics a couple of days ago ... Great weather, very nice camp!

Ask him about Knebraska---- hunting, fishing, college sports---- Their football team only does well against schools with great English departments, tho ... (Although I've never heard of Buffalo...)

Heard of Buffalo?
