He was the best.

Two of my favorite memories of him are when he diagrammed the steam coming off of a player's head after he took his helmet off. I was fortunate to hear the audio of that coming to work this morning.

Then there was a game at Soldier Field where the pigeons would flock on the side of the field that was at the opposite end of the teams current position. He diagrammed that as well. We need more characters like him.

Yesterday or early today I was reading a piece about Madden's role in the popularity of turducken, which Louisiana chef Prudhomme claims he invented. Anyhoo, there was a small La. company back in ancient times that promoted turducken on gameday by serving to Madden, who dug in with his hands, as apparently there were no utensils to be found at the stadium.

So, in the middle of feasting, in walks the N.O. Saints owner,, and Madden thinks, "Uh oh ... I've been eating this juicy wondermeat with my paws ... Do I shake this guy's hand?"

So, naturally --Madden being Madden --- he shakes the guy's hand ...

Next line in the article (paraphrasing):

"And the guy never spoke to me again..."

The article was interesting as a profile of Madden but also if you're interested in how turducken became a thing. (The company mentioned thanks Madden for putting them on the map.) Let me know if you'd like me to try to dig it up.

I remember that Letterman appearance...especially the "Payton Favring" bit.

I don't know that I've ever seen a more spot-on impression of anyone than Caliendo's Madden.
