1.) Swamp Fox - 08/06/2022
Finally figured out I need to get serious 'bout my bucket list.

Nobody expects to get serious about a bucket list!

My chief goal is a good buck ... A good buck and fun ... Fun and a good buck ... My two goals are a good buck and fun... and seeing some sights ... My three goals are a good buck, fun, and seeing some sights ... and an almost fanatical devotion to doing things the hard way... My four... no... Amongst my goals ... Amongst my weirdness... are such elements as good bucks, fun ... I'll come in again...
2.) DParker - 08/06/2022
Oh, bugger.
3.) Swamp Fox - 08/06/2022
If my road trip possibilities were drawn in the style of an historical battle map, there would be big fat arrows looping toward Ohio, west and southwest through the mid and lower South, and south to Savannah.

Then ---and here is the scary part---there would be spurs out to eastern Kansas, parts of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona .... Anything within striking distance of Vicksburg, Mississippi would be in danger ... and I know to take the left turn at Albequerque ...

4.) DParker - 08/06/2022
Stop on by. We'll have chicken and dumplings. And on a completely unrelated note, it sure is quiet in the back yard now.

I'll come in again if I have to ...

Oh, he did get in the last shot. When I was maneuvering his carcass in preparation for removing the feet I slipped and impaled my left inner wrist on one of the spurs. It wasn't deep, but did draw a little blood. Good thing I still have 3 days left on the antibiotic regime.

14.) Swamp Fox - 08/07/2022
I don't want bluecat to get skeered I mentioned eastern Kansas ... I'd opt instead for western Missouri, if I could identify an equal DIY hunting opportunity. :wink

The history of that combined region is of interest to me, and hunting is not the only factor in my trip planning. (I will come in again as many times as it takes ... :wink)

Besides jayhawkers and bushwackers, though, I wonder if they have anything else to see?

Any good food out there?

:p
15.) Swamp Fox - 08/07/2022
Clarksdale, Miss., with its ode to The Outlaw Jose Wales and its place in blues and down-home cookin' history, is high on my list ...

Unfortunately, recent severe flooding in the area is making some hunting decisions a little rough ...

My attack on Ohio could use some help.

I anticipated resistance from my friends in Kentucky and Indiana, but I did not think SE Ohio would be left wide-open for assault....

Let's carpe diem!
17.) Swamp Fox - 08/07/2022
There's a lot of public land up through there on my way... Most of it straight up and down.

Been there, done that. Over it.

Thanks, Uncle Sam!

40.) Swamp Fox - 08/10/2022
I'm leaning toward doing a turkey trip or maybe even spring squirrel first, so I can get some sight-seeing, good meals and barstool hours under my belt during the down time.

Oh, and deer scouting ... :wink

I think if I plan a deer trip first it would wind up being all deer hunting all the time, and that's not really the point of my bucket list ...
41.) Swamp Fox - 08/10/2022
Also, I would like to eat a shitload more crawfish before I die, so this is another point in favor of a spring trip first, consider the impossibility of getting much up here. I've tried, I've wrangled, I've extorted my coon-ass and New Orleans friends wherever they have landed after the last 20 years of weather, and ain't nothin' easy ....

Gonna have to go back down there and scoop them up myself, it looks like ...

58.) dino - 08/16/2022
"CE uses a saddle now but only for sex".

I have had some pretty rough health problems and haven't been able to work or hunt in the past few years. Nearly died last Spring. I am on the mend and seriously trying to get back into hunting shape. As of right now, I can't pull my bow back yet.
59.) bluecat - 08/16/2022
Well good luck on the rehab. Only CE shoots a 70 pound bow now. Everyone else uses the more quiet, more efficient, easier to pull 60 pound bows. Ask Swampy what's it like to pull back a barbie bow.
60.) dino - 08/16/2022
Yeah, I need to dial mine back to about 60... I just dread retuning and reserving my string loop and peep. Although I could probably just slide my peep up or down.

The MQ1 was a hot number back in the day, and if I weren't already covered up in old bows I don't have time to shoot, I'd jump all over this one. It would make a great exercise bow while building up to a hunting bow.

72.) Swamp Fox - 08/17/2022
I own 2 Q2's and maybe one XL ... Sad to say, I'd have to check ... I love the Q2.... I picked up an XL and set it up specifically for hog hunting, if I recall. That was during my "this bow's for this and this bow's for that" phase.
Don't forget the world's largest ball of twine in Kansas.
We should put CE on that one ... Unless I luck into a hunting invitation up there.

Right now, I'm putting a 16-hour drive limit on my longest trip. (Internet estimates.) As I mosey along, wanting to make some good stops, I figure that's two full days of travel out and then back without killing myself.

Yeah, I'm burning four days without hunting or fishing, but I think I might be able to keep myself talked into it to see some stuff and have some fun ...

Who do you think I am??--- Alex Griswold???

BTW, I've come to find out there is a big ball of twine in Minnesota, too ...

Who said this site has no redeeming value?

And WTF is up with Midwesterners? ----LOL
91.) Swamp Fox - 08/21/2022
Right now, I'm investigating my best options for spring turkey hunting Mississippi in preparation for a deer hunt, ideally the following year during their rut (approx. January). In the mix but lower down the priority scale is a bow deer hunt/rifle squirrel hunt during the Miss. archery season (October through mid-November). I have to see what kind of free time I can work out on my end, and how I gauge my chances of success/opportunities for scouting for that ultimate rut hunt.

Once I get a little better handle on that trip, a public land rut bowhunt in Ohio or Illinois and various wanderings in the Carolinas and Virginia are also on the list.

"My chief priority is ... "
92.) Swamp Fox - 08/21/2022
I'll be coming from the direction of either Lizard Lick, NC or Happy Bottom, SC (with a stop at Cat Hole), depending on pre-trip festivities ...

There's a lot of ground to cover and things to see before I get to t̶h̶e̶ ̶a̶r̶m̶p̶i̶t̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶S̶o̶u̶t̶ hot 'lanta.

Got some good stuff on the list already on the way(s) to Birmingham.

Top priority is to visit with an old buddy who's had a time with cancer, if he's still around by then.

When they fill your carcass with chemo drugs and slosh you all around (literally), you could say things are getting serious ...
93.) Swamp Fox - 08/22/2022

Then there definitely needs to be a stop at Toad Suck Park (in Arkansas) on your trip tic.

97.) Swamp Fox - 08/23/2022
Home of them trippy Ozark magic toads all the kids are licking?
98.) Swamp Fox - 08/23/2022
I think I may have caused the one wildlife biologist who contacted me to cower in the forest.

He responded to my phone message by email, "What is it you want?" and I emailed back how he could appease me: by answering 7 questions, clearly written, and not too comprehensive.

That was a week ago, and the last I've heard from him.

He ran away.
99.) Swamp Fox - 08/23/2022
....
100.) Swamp Fox - 08/23/2022
So what I think I'm learning from all this is that maybe I shouldn't send the same questions to the other four biologists who didn't even bother to respond to my initial request for help.

As I get older, I'm learning to deal with rejection better, I believe. ---LOL

I asked a lot of questions for a guy from North Carolina.
I said I was primarily a bowhunter.

I was hoping one of these knuckleheads would tell me there's a prime time for seeking and chasing in January (bucks and does, I mean) but I'm not seeing evidence of it on the rut maps, except in one area I'm not all that hot to hunt.

I'll keep after it. January timing is not all that important. I just thought it would fit in well with what is and what's not happening around here as our seasons wind down.

Turning up the heat on some of these Mississippi biolergists ...

Today, I called down to Jackson -- which may or may not have drinkable water now -- and got the email addresses.

That's gold, Vern ... Gold!

It's a still from The Out of Towners, a classic old Neil Simon comedy flick starring Jack Lemon and Sandy Dennis. It's about an Ohio couple who travel to NYC for a big promotion interview with the husband's company, and the whole thing turns out to be just one misadventure after another.

I'm sure you can find it on VHS somewhere.

What is it that you want to know? Where to hunt? Surely there are other people in the office that might know that. You're giving them way too long a leash.

Naw ... I have it narrowed down to about half a dozen areas. I'm asking some timing and access questions so I can zero in on two or three.

I want to talk to a biologist because I've heard so much about them.

Out of five inquiries [removes socks, just in case] I have one solid response and two promises to get up with me, which leaves two somethings I might have to throw off the Tallahatchie Bridge, still, if I ever get down there...

Spoke to two biolergists today.

One is getting some stuff together for me.

The other is my new best buddy ...
