"While police departments in Oakland and San Francisco have seen success by offering cash in exchange for firearms, one Bay Area school administrator found a new opportunity to reduce gun deaths. This Saturday, Strobridge Elementary School in Hayward, California offered a free book and a chance to win a bicycle to any students who traded in their toy guns during a special buyback program."

2.) DParker - 06/12/2013
That should make for a great lesson on gambling when every kid except one realizes they gave away a fun toy and got nothing in return.
3.) bluecat - 06/12/2013
I'm trying to get some squirt guns for cheap in bulk and ship them out there for some cash and prizes. I'm still running the numbers but it just might work.

If I can save just one child...

A free book? Woohooo! :re: C'mon, how dumb do they think these kids are? I mean, I liked to read and all, but even when I was a little squirt I knew when I was getting gypped. I'll repeat my call for a stupidity test for certain professions. Let's start with the so-called educators.

In other news, the Pop-Tart Kid is still scheduled to swing. His appeal was denied, even though he claims he was only trying to nibble the tasty pastry into a mountain, and he pointed it in a safe direction anyway (At the ceiling; Presumably the tart was not filled with rounds that could pentetrate acoustic tile and pink fluffy insulation and the floor of the Current Events/Show-and-Tell Room above. Another win for frangible fillings for your defensive baked goods needs.)

Also, no one has heard from Gap-toothed Joe, the Lego Maniac. Word on the wire is that the 5-year-old is still in the pokey in that Florida cowtown. I say we get the old gang together, stock up on sarsparilla, saddle the horses and bust 'em out!

Who's with me?

Aiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!
5.) Swamp Fox - 06/12/2013
You know, a book give-away to bribe kids is not a completely bad idea, the more I think of it. Not for a toy gun swap, for sure, but maybe for something less fun like boogers or insect-incinerating magnifying glasses. I mean, if there were a possibility that you could get a kid to stop eating his own boogers by offering a book, why not try?

Of course, it would have to be the right book, or the kids won't go for it. Especially the boys. They're more suspicious of authority by nature (which is one reason they like to play with guns in the first place...Think about it). Something like Charlotte's Web or Billy Has Two Mommies won't work, even though they are the teachers' union favorites.

Something more like Girls With Boobs From Your Town would be way better. If only there were such a book! Or an app! The little ankle-biters are all plugged in these days...why not an app?

But you have to be honest with kids. This thing will never work if--in exchange for not eating their boogers or not making poop jokes or whatever soul-crushing objective you have---if they open up Girls with Boobs from Your Town and see Mary Ellen from fifth grade and Brittany from fourth receiving awards for Perfect Attendance from the their teachers, the principal and the school board.

Those are not the boobs the kids were hoping to see.

:wink

I still remember when Playboy sent out a sample magazine in a brown wrapper way back when. I got the mail that day. It was like the god's smiled on me and said. "You've been a good kid we thought we'd reward you."
7.) DParker - 06/12/2013
You can have my insect-incinerating magnifying glass when you pry it from my cold, dead hand.

Excellent. This should be used in every one of the described cases with the accompanying comment that, "Even the anti-gun President you're supporting thinks your toy/pretend gun hysteria is stupid."
11.) Swamp Fox - 06/18/2013
Obama is not anti-gun. He's willing to give small arms to who-knows-who in Syria. He knows they're harmless.

Good thing he has people in his administration that can discuss red lines and such for him because there is a lot of gay news and events for him to keep up with, especially this month.

http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/351063/priorities-white-house-announces-syria-plan-conference-call-while-obamas-lgbt-event

But it's not all bad news. Since he's cancelled his multi-million-dollar African vacation upon learning that snipers would shoot any fuzzy animals that appeared to want to eat him, his schedule is free to visit Alaska and commune with the bears.

I am thinking about sending him some NC BBQ to take with him...You know, for snacks on the plane and stuff...

He had been drinking and went for a bike ride, taking some of the food along, she said. The mancame across the bear and threw it a piece of meat. He then offered the bear another piece.
"That's when it kind of went ballistic," Ipsen said.

Meat and bear? Surely this is a rare occurence.

On a lighter note, my pistol box is being delivered today. More later...
13.) bluecat - 06/18/2013
Damn, the White House doesn't know which end is up right now. I heard there is a YouTube clip of one of the Syrian rebel fighter leaders eating a man's heart. I'm glad we are aligning ourselves with him.

No other organs (except the liver) were harmed during the slaughter thankfully.

Man, this is horrible reporting. All of the important details are completely omitted. What kind of meat? Beef? Pork? What style of BBQ? Texas? Memphis? N. Carolina? Was there sauce, and if so...what kind? Or was it strictly a dry-rub affair?

And how in the world did "mancame" sail through the spell-check?
Meat and bear? Surely this is a rare occurence.
That reminds me of the time I went hiking through Denali with a sockeye salmon in each pocket.

Oh, lah-te-dah...like you've never ripped out and consumed the still-beating heart of a vanquished foe in order to demonstrate your ruthlessness before.
16.) Swamp Fox - 06/18/2013
You know, I wonder if anyone would have survived the Donner Party if they'd had this stuff...I mean, if a bear likes it straight up, it's got to be good, right? :-)

17.) DParker - 06/18/2013
Bears tend to like meals straight out of the dumpster too, so I'm going to have to take that particular testimonial with a grain of salt.

Though I do still have a couple of bottles of Moose Drool brown ale in the fridge that I might want to pair with something.

Well, there was that one time at band camp.
19.) bluecat - 06/18/2013
What was with the guy trying to take his bottle away? If a bear wants to drink. Let 'em drink.

Well, you could always try James Woods' variation on my 17 year-old neighborhood kid idea and get yourself a young girlfriend (who tend to be more intertubez-savvy than their older counterparts). I'm sure there are some other benefits as well...

You can see right away that this is a guy who doesn't spend his time grumbling about how hard it is to post photos on hunting websites.
34.) Swamp Fox - 06/27/2013
Oh, so now it's 17 year olds...Really, that's not an improvement because whereas the 12-year-olds are dumb as stumps, the 17's are dumb as a box of hammers.

But the pic does prove it: I AM wasting my time with you boneheads...
