1.) luv2bowhunt - 07/10/2013
Well I've been using the trusty Bowtech Justice for 9 years now, and I think it's time for a change. No real complaints on the Justice but could use some more speed. So I've been saving my cash and am now getting serious about this.

I'm so out of the loop with bow manufacturers that I only know what I see on TV commercials, and that is almost exclusively Mathews.

Now I know I need to go to the shop and touch and feel and shoot several different kinds, blah, blah, blah.

Just skip the middle man and tell me if you were looking what 3 or 4 or 1 would you narrow it down to. The only one I know that is out right now is the Creed.
2.) Swamp Fox - 07/10/2013
Well, I'm in the same boat as far as being a little out of the loop on new bows, but based on how much I like my Strother Rush, I'd be interested in shooting the 2013 version (the Rush XT).

I also shot a couple of the newer Hoyts at Battle Mountain and have to say I liked how they felt. Hoyt'em could tell you what I shot. Or OHBH. I believe they both brought the same bow (?) or just slight variations.

You can tell I really went over them with a microscope, huh? I just really liked the feel of them. No need to ruin a good thing by overthinking it....
3.) luv2bowhunt - 07/10/2013
Yeah, I'm totally clueless on what's out there. Strother, I'll have to see who sells them around here.
4.) CHRIS - 07/10/2013
Bowtech just released their new Carbon Knight today, three of my local dealers received their sample, super lightweight 3.2 lb. I couldn't shoot any because they were all right handed, the lefties are supposed to come in within a few weeks. I have been thinking about retiring my '05 Allegiance. Luv2 you may want to take a ride out to Lancaster to see what they have. Usually they have a really good selection.
5.) billy b - 07/10/2013
Shoot em all & one will pick you, you're not gonna like it anyway:poke:
6.) Swamp Fox - 07/10/2013
Until Mathews gets rid of that butt-ugly waffle riser, I probably won't buy another. If an all-black one fell off a truck and into my lap, that would be a different story because those are passably good-looking. I shot a 2011 or 2012 (?) a while back that I was prepared not to like---not a Z7 but it beats me what it was, even after having gone to the website---and I did like it. Like buttah! Z7 is okay but I'm not in love with it, so that's why I don't think it was a Z7...been there already. Maybe it was a variation of a Monster, but it must have been second or third generation. And not called a Monster, I don't think.

Hell, I don't remember...

You kids get off my lawn!!!!

:rage:
7.) Triton Rich - 07/10/2013
The only newer bow I've shot is the Carbon Element. Very nice bow, well balanced, quiet and good speed. It's pretty light but I believe only 1/3 lb less than my Destroyer. Love my Destroyer btw but wishing I woulda got the 350. If I was gonna buy one today, it would most likely be the Insanity CPX. That's mostly cause of the speed. I think that speed thing is like crack, you don't know you need it but then you get some and you only want more! :hb:
8.) crookedeye - 07/11/2013
do what youre heart tells you...and buy the dream season, pse..
9.) Ohbuckhunter - 07/11/2013
I can't say the name of the bow. It hurts really bad. But I like it allot. Matrix +.
10.) luv2bowhunt - 07/11/2013
do what youre heart tells you...and buy the dream season, pse..
That's funny right there.

Hoyt makes light bows, wow who knew. Things have changed since I've been looking.

Chris I'm with you, not liking the look of the riser on the Creed.
11.) bluecat - 07/11/2013
My biggest complaint on the Mathews bows is the axle to axle length. I don't like little itty bitty bows.
12.) Swamp Fox - 07/11/2013
I used to think the same thing, but after having shot a good bunch of short ATA bows in the last few years (mainly because a lot of friends and acquaintances are shooting them and that's what there is to pick from when we're all standing around jaw-jackin') I have changed my mind.

I'm not saying that short is my favorite design, but I can't say that handling and accuracy are necessarily sacrificed on the short bows I've tried. Don't ask me what the shortest I've shot is. I wouldn't remember. Maybe 29 inches.

BTW, I figured out which Mathews I was referring to above: the Heli-M. Don't know why it didn't come to me yesterday, LOL. However, I do still defy you to find it easily on the website.

I pulled more weight with it than I thought I wanted...very easily...and the hold and the shot felt good. I didn't shoot it enough to go beyond those basics.
13.) luv2bowhunt - 07/11/2013
you don't know you need it but then you get some and you only want more! :hb:
Now you know DParker is sooo going to turn that into his favorite subject matter.:wink
14.) Swamp Fox - 07/11/2013
That might be the master-stroke of hijacking right there...:wink
15.) luv2bowhunt - 07/11/2013
For me the most important thing is draw smoothness. It has to be easy to draw and let down again or I'm not using it in the treestand.

Speed would be nice too, shouldn't be hard to find a bow that tops the Justice. But it's got to be smooth and feel good in the hand.

....and pretty, it must be pretty.
16.) luv2bowhunt - 07/11/2013
OK, checked out the Bowtech Carbon Knight on the website. Lightest bow in the large bow market.

Question, with the lightness would there come an added bow jump in the hand? Seems like you would have to trade off something with the loss of weight.
17.) Swamp Fox - 07/11/2013
The Heli-M is 30 ATA and 3.5 pounds. No jump or buzz that I can remember. It might or might not have had a stabilizer on it.

Beyond that, all the short bows I've shot probably have had stabilizers them and I can't say I remember one that was so nasty at the shot that it stuck in my head.

Proof by negative evidence, I know, but there it is...LOL.
18.) Ventilator - 07/11/2013
Luv2 , if you can suffer the ragging and the humility, I can get you any of the new Strother 2013 bows for 600.00 new in box. We have a limited number to sell at our discretion. This includes the Rush Xt, Wrath SHO, Wrath , Moxie and the Hope. PM me if you are interested or if anyone else is.
19.) luv2bowhunt - 07/11/2013
That is very kind of you, but what is Strother?:wink

Now you're a guy who shoots different bows, how do you think the Strother Bros. compares to the new Hoyts and the Creed?

Be honest, no favoritism.
20.) Ventilator - 07/11/2013
i havent shot any of the hoyts and but i have shot a creed. friend of mine in NE had one. My wrath SHO is a short ata bow like the creed. draw cycle is very similiar , both have a smooth draw. Creed is much uglier and the specs are a little slower. SHO is offered in the new Realtree AP Black. IMO ,that is the best looking finish on a bow ive seen. Both bows are shooters. I guess would you rather pay 1000 for a creed or 600 for a strother? lol
21.) Ventilator - 07/11/2013
And Strother has been around for 4 years now, time to get up with the times. lol :-)
22.) Ventilator - 07/11/2013
I mean, swampy has like ....3 of them!
23.) bluecat - 07/11/2013
Are the bows being mentioned 2-cam, cam and half or single cam bows? Curious.
24.) Swamp Fox - 07/11/2013
I mean, swampy has like ....3 of them!
LOL...

Just two, the SX-1 and the SX-Rush.

I've shot a few of the others. They make a great bow.

Deserving of a look.
25.) Swamp Fox - 07/11/2013
Are the bows being mentioned 2-cam, cam and half or single cam bows?
Yes.
26.) Swamp Fox - 07/11/2013
Are the bows being mentioned 2-cam, cam and half or single cam bows?
Yes.
27.) luv2bowhunt - 07/11/2013
OK, never shot a 2 cam bow. Remind me again the advantages of the 2 cam.

It's just for speed right? I always avoided the 2 cam bows because of timing issues, either real or imagined that I expected with a 2 cam bow.
28.) Ventilator - 07/11/2013
Timing issues are pretty much a thing of the past now. Smoother draw now than fast one cams and more speed.
29.) Ventilator - 07/11/2013
and these are two track cam systems.
30.) Swamp Fox - 07/11/2013
I agree that from what I've seen and heard, timing is not the bear that it once was. My impression is that the simple solution was draw stops (and good strings). Maybe there is something more to it than that, but I don't pay attention to stuff like that anyway, LOL. If it sounds complicated, I avoid it.

If I were shopping for a bow other than a solo cam (which I am ultra-comfortable with), I would definitely ask some knowledgeable people about ease of tuning though, so I'm not completely oblivious. :wink
31.) luv2bowhunt - 07/11/2013
I am going to go and shoot a couple, but wanted to get some ideas in my head before walking in there. It's times like this that I wish I was Deer30, then I already would've owned one of each kind by now, and could just settle on a favorite.

I put bow buying in the same category as car shopping. Not much fun, because I don't want to pick a lemon and deal with salesmen.
32.) Pa bowhunter - 07/11/2013
I have been shooting two cam bows for about the last 6-7 years and have never had a timing issue, both bowtech's, but I have heard good thing about the Mathews creed and the new hoyts, last year I shot the hoyt vector and vector turbo and really liked both...
33.) Ohbuckhunter - 07/12/2013
I'm going say that allot of manufactures making great bows now a days. I have a beef with Mathews fan boys but there bows are pretty nice now a days. I will never own one cause I'm childish and can't look past the fan boys. I've a die hard pse fan for a while. I still shot every new bow out every year to see what they was like. I switched this year because of comfort in the grip. I've always love the slim grip but my meat hands started making me cant the bow. Made the change n now driving tacts again.
34.) luv2bowhunt - 07/12/2013
Of course, once I get a bow, I'm going to start a discussion on the drop-away rest vs. the WB. That never gets old.
35.) bluecat - 07/12/2013
Of course, once I get a bow, I'm going to start a discussion on the drop-away rest vs. the WB. That never gets old.
Can I go ahead and put you down for a bowsling?
36.) Hunter - 07/12/2013
I really don't much about the technical stuff but I can say I really like my DXT. It's short and light, perfect for tree stand hunting. The only thing I'm not crazy about is that it has a soft back wall. When the adrenaline is pumping, the arrow can come off a little hotter than normal. Don't know if current Matthews are all the same way though. Just something to look out for.
37.) Swamp Fox - 07/13/2013
Ted, you bring up a good point. I really should have mentioned that one of the things I was impressed with about the Heli-M was that it did have a good solid back wall. Quite a change for Mathews, and it will surprise people who have gotten used to mush from them. I don't know if that's something Mathews is shooting for in the future.

Personally, I don't mind mush within reason on the right bow, but I think I'm in the minority.
38.) luv2bowhunt - 07/15/2013
Yeah, I've gotten used to a solid back wall. I'm not going to like a change in that.

Maybe I should just do like cRoOKeDEyE and get a crossbow.
39.) Dan-o - 07/15/2013

Mathews put a limb draw stop on their single cam line, so they aren't spongy anymore. Their dual cam line is still kinda spongy.
40.) bluecat - 07/15/2013
So Mathews aren't spongeworthy?
41.) Swamp Fox - 07/15/2013
LOL....

I don't know how you guys walk around with those things...
42.) luv2bowhunt - 07/16/2013
Mathews put a limb draw stop on their single cam line, so they aren't spongy anymore. Their dual cam line is still kinda spongy.
Thanks Dan-o, that's the kind of info I was looking for. I'd consider Strothilator bows if I could shoot one somewhere.

Even with all the humiliation that could come being like, you know.........Swamp Fox.:wink
43.) Swamp Fox - 07/16/2013

Cats and dogs love me. Women want to feed me. Children admire me. Deer respect me. Fish fear me.

Smoothness: IMO that takes a few out of the equation all By its lonesome. Today's definition of smooth is pull a tank from the start of draw to the finish. the problem is MOST are like his, to a degree.

Skip getting a 70# draw...them cycles SUCK exponentially worse...

I have an older (by today's standards) matrix, with a slide NOT that POS roller idea.

Speed isn't going to be a concern, they all have plenty of that, some with room to spare.
Noise is far less too...even with the speed

Try the ugly creed, inanity CPXL, the knight (sp?), vendetta, moxie (don't tell Kenny...lol), and if you can find them...a G5.
********************

On a side note, the 30ish inch ATA bows are (IMO) playing out like a longer ATA BOW, partially due to the size of the cams. Yes the axle pins are at 30ish inches, but the string is feeding off the cam(s) some 2" (or more) above/below the pins. May sound corny, but there is something to that...again IMO.
47.) luv2bowhunt - 07/16/2013
Thanks hoyt em. That's useful information. A rarity on this site.

We should take your post and frame it on the wall, poster child for useful information.:tu:
48.) luv2bowhunt - 07/16/2013
Did anyone handle or shoot the Bowtech Carbon Knight yet?
49.) CHRIS - 07/17/2013
luv2 i am hoping to do so tomorrow. The lefties were to have arrived. I'll let you know.
50.) hoyt_em - 07/17/2013
I did, draw is pretty close to the previous models of D340, and insanity CPXL

It is stout, but not over bearing, light as heck (bare bow), and a very solid back wall.

I didn't shoot it, just drew it and let it down a couple times.
51.) luv2bowhunt - 07/17/2013
luv2 i am hoping to do so tomorrow. The lefties were to have arrived. I'll let you know.
Chris let me know how you like it. This bow is one I will check out, maybe head to Kinseys Outdoors next week. I will post pics of my bow shopping excursions, should be riveting for all of you.:-)
52.) Swamp Fox - 07/17/2013
Hey, Luv2...I did some work for you and found these two Strother dealers nearby (within 50 miles, anyway).

DA BOWSHOP

1980 TANEY TOWN RD

GETTSBURG, PA 17325 US

Fury X Archery

9987 Route 104

Middleburg, PA 17842 US

.
53.) Swamp Fox - 07/17/2013
I guesss you have to figure out if it's Gettsburg or Gettysburg...
54.) luv2bowhunt - 07/17/2013
I tried using the Strother dealer locator, slowed my whole computer down, had to quit.

I've never heard of Gettsburg, but Taneytown Rd should be Gettysburg. You have any idea what traffic has been like around Gettysburg this summer? 150th anniversary has brought hundreds of thousands of tourists who will randomly slam on the breaks 'cause they think they saw a Buford monument. Not good times to go through Gettysburg.

I will consider the trip if I can find the shop on Taneytown Rd.
55.) Swamp Fox - 07/17/2013
Just think of it this way...It was worse for the troops in 1863.
56.) Swamp Fox - 07/17/2013

Swampy, that was a good one.
58.) Swamp Fox - 07/17/2013
Just trying to give Luv2 a little perspective...He gets so down sometimes...

:wink
59.) Swamp Fox - 07/17/2013
Also, Strother was/is selling a limited line at Cabelas stores. The SX-Rush is listed now at sale price $699. The Wrath apparently was listed in the past but it doesn't look like it's there now. Those would be 2012 bows. A quick search at Cabelas didn't pull up any 2013s like the Rush XT or the Wrath SHO.
60.) DParker - 07/17/2013
I guesss you have to figure out if it's Gettsburg or Gettysburg...
I'd bet four score and seven dollars that's a Gettysburg address.
61.) Swamp Fox - 07/17/2013
D'oh!

I wish I'd thought of that! :applause:
62.) bluecat - 07/17/2013
:applause:

That was awesome!
63.) bluecat - 07/17/2013
Too bad that only three people will read it.
64.) luv2bowhunt - 07/17/2013
This is not the Podunk Section. Do I need to remind Mike to remind Alex to remind you the rules about the Forum?
65.) Swamp Fox - 07/17/2013
You should be happy with any bow you shoot because you're your own buzz-kill....I mean stabilizer...

Read it? I was told you were there and heard it. :wink
68.) Dan-o - 07/17/2013
For what its worth, this year my hunting bow choice came down to 2 finalists. the bowtech experience and the Mathews Creed. If you like a little sponge in the wall, I'd consider a Mathews MR7. For a 35" ata bow, Id check out the insanity CPXL from Bowtech. I've had my fun with carbon bows but I think I'm done with those. I shoot a heavier bow better than a lighter one. The creed and experience were basically a tie as far as shoot ability, draw cycle, and lack of shock or buzz. The deciding factor is that the experience was 13 fps faster than the creed at my specs and the same arrow.

As far as Strother, new breed, elite, etc., they all make nice bows but I've learned that re-sale value sucks. I'd buy used, or buy new if you plan on keeping it forever and don't care about re-sale. The only other watch point is dealer support.

I did not comment on speed bows, pse, or Hoyt hunting bows. While I've shot most of those available, I didn't give them serious consideration this year for various reasons, so I really don't have any informed opinions to offer there.
69.) luv2bowhunt - 07/18/2013
I'm already excited about shooting the Insanity. The name just fits me for some reason.

I'm not sure how much I'd be worried about resale value, because normally when I'm done with a bow I find someone who's new in the sport and give it to them to get started. That's what I've done with the last 2.

Thanks for the info Dan-o.
70.) CHRIS - 07/18/2013
luv2, no luck on me shooting the carbon knight, lefties "now" will not be arriving until next month. I think I will give the boys at Kinsey a call to see what they received. I'm sure everyone's opening order were all right handed.
71.) Swamp Fox - 07/18/2013

So, is the Bowtech the Inanity or the Insanity? Who comes up with these bow names anyway? I suppose next year we will be seeing bows called the Irrelevancy and the Bi-polar.
72.) luv2bowhunt - 07/18/2013
I think Vigilante would make a good bow name.:wink
73.) Swamp Fox - 07/18/2013
