Some pictures form my recent South Dakota Adventures ....

More birds around here then I have seen in all the seasons of my life combined !!!

2.) DParker - 03/05/2013
Awesome. I work with a guy who lives in SD. He's in town for the week and we were talking about the pheasant hunting there just this morning. I've got to look into a trip up there sometime soon. Do you have a dog for your bird hunting? And how do you like that Benelli?
3.) Old Crow - 03/05/2013
Love the Benelli .... Works like a charm ..

Both Pheasant and Waterfowl are awesome here ....

I haven't personally committed to a dog yet .... in the fall it makes me want one some thing terrible.

Really want a German wirehair or Drahthaar

This is a local breeder with awesome dogs .... http://www.vomeisbarteich.com/

Let me know if you head up this way ...

Them geese were early season we had 6 guys in layouts and 8 per man was the limit then. Them are me and a buddies haul think 13

The flock pictures are all within 10 miles of the house
12.) DParker - 03/06/2013
I've actually never eaten goose. How do the wild Canadians taste?
13.) Old Crow - 03/07/2013
I've actually never eaten goose. How do the wild Canadians taste?
Like them breasted out and cooked in a slow cooker just like a beef pot roast ......little Lipton onion soup is good as a liquid base to.....

A lot of guys here cut it for jerky or grind for sausage
14.) DParker - 03/07/2013
Not enough fat under the skin for roasting?
15.) Old Crow - 03/07/2013
Not enough fat under the skin for roasting?
Not enough for me to pluck and mess with them .... pretty common here for guys to just breast out the birds ... some may consider it a waste but for those guys they are more then welcome to clean and gather all my goose and pheasant legs ... lol

The pot roast is the best I've found .... the meat takes a very similar texture ..
16.) Leighton - 03/07/2013
The wife has only cooked Canada Goose twice , stank the house out both times . She said she would never cook one again. There's not as much meat on them as I had thought there would be mind you I expect they lost a bit of weight on their flight across the pond.
17.) TRAVELER - 03/14/2013
Is that a Benelli I see in those pics?
18.) DParker - 03/14/2013

21.) Pa bowhunter - 03/16/2013
What's it cost to go pheasant hunting....like non resident tags
I looked into that when this thread was first started and found that all you need is a non-resident small game license, which will set you back $124 for a license that allows you 2x 5-day hunting periods.

23.) Old Crow - 03/17/2013
Pheasant is over the counter so to speak for non residence ....

If you want in on the Waterfowl you need to draw a tag ....
http://gfp.sd.gov/hunting/waterfowl/nonresident.aspx
Nonresident Waterfowl Application(Available - June )(First Deadline - July 6 )

Its possible to get in three limits ... Still a goal of mine ...

AM - Waterfowl
Mid Day Pheasants
Evening Walleyes
24.) DropzOfWild - 03/19/2013
Thanks guys!
25.) XJCraver - 03/19/2013
Man OC, I'm jealous! Y'all might think this weird, but hunting pheasants and/or quail is one of my most favorite things to do in the world. I walked miles hunting beside my Grandpa when I was a kid, and I miss that something fierce.

Nowadays, it's a miracle if I see more than a couple pheasants a year. I do have a half dozen coveys of quail on the farm, but they're not what I'd call plentiful. I don't hunt them - there's so few, I just can't pull the trigger. Makes me sad. :(
26.) Old Crow - 03/20/2013
The Snow geese are coming back .....

This is a Doppler Radar from 90 miles south of me ..... they will need to hold up till we get some open water up here ....

This is a group of guys west of me I went goose hunting with a few of last year .... They do plenty of killin ..
27.) Old Crow - 03/20/2013
Same Guys .... from Henry SD - Its hard to fathom the # of Birds till you see it for your self .... or feel the wing beats against your chest as they get up ....

28.) crookedeye - 03/23/2013
drove out to grand island today ton of snows and blues down here, the cranes should heat up in the next couple of weeks..lots of hutches.. forgot my camera..
29.) Wild Bob - 11/20/2013
Tons of geese pushing thru central Montana with this latest round of winter weather. I image they are showing up over in SD as well...
