1.) Hunter - 10/21/2013
Looking for a new scope for my .270 for shots out to 200-250 yards. Only considering scopes with 50mm objective lens.

THE 3 I am considering are Weaver Super Slam 6x20, Vortex Viper 6x20 & Nikon Monarch 6x24. All are in the same relative price range. I'm not very knowledgeable in glass so would like to hear any opinions. Viper has 33mm tube vs 1" tube if that matters?

Thanks in advance for any input

Id go with Vortex of those options. Ive bought several Burris Fullfield scopes with mil-dots in the last couple years. very tough and accurate scopes, however they have 40mm objectives.

Here you go, Ted. See also the links in the thread:

I have no experience with any of the scopes you mentioned but do have a Weaver on a squirrel rifle and like it. I was actually surprised how good it is for that rifle, considering the price. Not sure I'd put a Weaver on a bigger precision rifle, but that's my prejudice. The first three lines I would look at for what you're trying to do would be Leupold, Zeiss and Kahles. A step up in price ---I would think, unless you find a sale or a refurb--but all three have something good in other than their top lines. It's worth a try to see if there's something from them in your price range.

Thanks for the link, Swampy. At least that clears up the size of tube questions.

BTW, SWFA is a good place to buy a scope. I have used them several times. Bear Basin is where I would check first, then SWFA, then Natchez. Natchez has new and refurbished scopes.

Ditto. SWFA is usually pretty competitive and stocks good stuff. Natchez SS often has really good sales, but isn't always significantly cheaper. But I've shilled for them enough already. And SWFA is located in Red Oak, TX, which is a kinda', sorta' southern Dallas suburb. When I've bought from them (a couple of scopes and a few sets of rings) I've always just hopped in the car and driven to their warehouse, which has a small retail desk...so I can't speak to their shipping.

It certainly matters when you go to mount it. So if you go with the Viper make sure you look for 30mm rings...not 33mm. You'll grow old trying to find them. :wink

A guy I work with just bought the Vortex Viper for his .270 and he loves it, he usually buys Leupold, and bought this on a recommendation of a friend, he said he loves it and would buy another in a heartbeat...
