1.) Ohbuckhunter - 04/12/2014
1-A picture of you, the bird, and weapon

2-A picture of the beard (still attached to the bird, DO NOT CUT OFF BEARD) and tape measure showing the length. Show entire length of beard and tape measure, including the tip.

3-A picture of each spur and a tape measure showing the length. Spurs must still be attached to the leg.

Scoring:
Scores will be determined by spur length x 10 plus beard length x 2.

For instance:
Beard is 8.5" - 8.5x2=17 pts.
Spurs 1" & 1-1/8" - 2.125x10=21.25 pts
Gun kill -10 pts
17 + 21.25 = 48.25 pts. total

All kills will be scored to the nearest 1/8th inch.

Only 1 bird may be entered per contestant. If you take a bigger bird after you have entered first, you may upgrade to the better bird. When you upgrade it will cancel out the previous entry.

Each member's bird will count toward the team's total points.

In the event of a tie, we will match the teams' top bird, second bird, third bird, etc. until we have a higher score for one team.

Bow kill add 20 points
Gun kill add 10 points

While I may be stuck on a team with him. I will not sit by crookedeye
4.) NEBigAl - 04/12/2014
For spurs do we measure along the curve or straight line
5.) Ohbuckhunter - 04/12/2014
I would demand a recount.

For the spurs I always measure the straight. But I could be doing it wrong. I should have asked what everyone else wanted as well. What about weight. Does everyone have a scale. Do you want weight to be added as well.

Just burning some of our idle grass fields on the south side of the lake!

Mill Creek is getting slammed, Methodist not so much. Saw 4 big toms strutting by Methodist creek. The area south of the dam by the ATV trail always holds birds. South side of the lake is where I would go, like the crystal creek (between road 6 and road 9, south side of lake) area.

Yep, pull it up on google earth. Crystal Creek crosses onto Corps property between road 6 and rd 9 and empties into prairie dog bay, its got good habitat and doesnt get a lot of pressure!
26.) NEBigAl - 04/13/2014
Right now we're doing a major renovation on the tainter gates of the dam. This first phase should be done this fall. The first phase is just putting a "stoplog" on the face of each gate. Basically its a bracket in front of each gate, then we can slide a bulkhead in it to work on the gates when the water level is high.
27.) Deerminator - 04/13/2014
Do you use cinders to block the leaks? That's what we use up here. I used to operate Lock 6 in Oswego.
Rebuilt and fixed the gates in Lock 4 over the winter once. That was cool.

the one I shot and got feathers..which should be 5 points. just sayin...was below the spillway..there on both sides of the republican river..all over.
29.) crookedeye - 04/13/2014
I brang them two in hook line and sinker with some hard clucks and some seductive purrs..it was a good hunt..

we may go down there the weekend after easter. hopefully there wont be a lot of shotgun hunters there.. I think this time i'll bring my crossbow..

they wont stand a chance..

well whatever..every time I drive by them it doesn't look like there putting any stoplogs or bulkheads down..i was going to ask them where do I apply at!! I mean that looks like a easy job..
31.) crookedeye - 04/13/2014
I was the guy that loosen the straps on the outhouses...don't tell anyone...
32.) crookedeye - 04/13/2014
I think it took them all week just to put the one lane stop light up.. that was a major achievement...
33.) crookedeye - 04/13/2014
back when I was in the corps, me and the natives built mud huts..we had to do it just to survive..

once we break down where going to need someone to make fire and to provide us with shelter..

Ill be teaching boaters education that weekend CE! Give me a call if you're around
40.) crookedeye - 04/14/2014
can you rent boats out there?
41.) NEBigAl - 04/15/2014
North Shore has pontoons for rent, its kind of pricey. They might not start renting until the rec season really gets going though.
North Shore has pontoons for rent, its kind of pricey. They might not start renting until the rec season really gets going though.
I think CrookedEye was interested in a paddle boat.

For the spurs I always measure the straight. But I could be doing it wrong. I should have asked what everyone else wanted as well. What about weight. Does everyone have a scale. Do you want weight to be added as well.
I only have ready access to a scale a couple of places and I'm not putting one in the Bronco for those other places, LOL. I would have to take something valuable out to make room. :wink Plus I don't want to compete with fat farm birds. :-) I say let's forget about weight.

The spur measurement is usually done along the outside centerline. This can give you a longer measurement than straight-line sometimes. Here's how the NWTF scores turkeys. Note that they go to sixteenths. Doesn't bother me to stick to eighths. Easier to see in photos and real life, too.

http://www.nwtf.org/for_hunters/how_to_score.html
44.) Ohbuckhunter - 04/15/2014
Sounds good to me
45.) NEBigAl - 04/15/2014
Lets record spur lengths in millimeters, beard in decimeters, and weight in stones.
46.) Deerminator - 04/15/2014
I think the temperature of the bird should be concidered...........................................450 for 15 then down to 300:-)
47.) Ventilator - 04/16/2014
Well, good thing dan-o didn't sign up. he is a bird exterminator.
48.) bluecat - 04/16/2014
I think if you have a beard longer than the bird's beard you shoot, you should be elgible for some bonus points.
49.) Ohbuckhunter - 04/16/2014
Dano should have signed up.
50.) Deerminator - 04/16/2014
Where's he been?
51.) Deerminator - 04/16/2014
And Dino, and a few others:tap:
52.) Swamp Fox - 04/16/2014
I'll post some pics later tonight if I don't pass out...Been up since 4:30 (AM LOL), hunted all day (run-and-gun, shotgun) killed a nice gobbler at 4:10 PM. Worked him for three hours, the bastard.

I'm gonna double-check the measurements right now but don't think I'll come up with anything different from what I got in the field. I'm by myself which makes pics and measuring difficult, but I'm gonna say an honest 11 inches on the beard (medium paintbrush, LOL) and spurs at 6/8 and 7/8. I do have a scale here so I'll hang him up for S&Gs... He's not a beast, but he made me cry a little toting him out. :wink

Later, gators...
53.) Swamp Fox - 04/16/2014
Well, the pics aren't gonna win any prizes since I only have two hands, a "sort of a" tripod and a camera that won't do what I need it to to focus on itty bitty details...Plus there's the sad little peabrain God gave me...

I'm sticking with 11 inches on the beard, and one of the spurs might be 1/16 shy of what I said above. You can mark me down or round it up... It makes no nevermind to me. Yay, team! LOL

The scale said 21 pounds on the nose.
54.) Swamp Fox - 04/17/2014
Well, pics won't upload. Might need some help resizing...Photobucket is acting up, too.

Might be the lack of sleep, LOL....Maybe not...
55.) Deerminator - 04/17/2014
Excellent Swampy:tu:
56.) bluecat - 04/17/2014
Congrats Swamp. Did you call him or stalk him or both?
57.) Ventilator - 04/17/2014
Nice job Paco!

Paco Swampy kills an eastern...good job! Was it at Lynchburg or NC?
58.) Swamp Fox - 04/17/2014
Thanks.

Called him. Sneaking around some fields, I spotted a hen, and that's when the fight broke out...:wink

I'll post the story later.

++++

Alright, I'm gonna try the upload thing again.

Here you can plainly see that the bird is 21 pounds:

I got so tired of not being able to focus tight on the spurs, that's what you get for the scale.

Here's the beard:

Sorry about the measurement pic, but it's a PITA by yourself. I've already taken out an ad for some help for next time:

65.) bluecat - 04/17/2014

Sometimes you don't know you've captured a bigfoot on camera until days later.
66.) Swamp Fox - 04/17/2014
LOL..

I wish I'd seen that the camera dropped after I mashed the button and ran around the tree trying to beat the self-timer, LOL. I cut off the gobbler's head and missed any chance of snapping a lucky leprechaun at my knees...

Oh, well...There will be other chances...:-)
67.) Swamp Fox - 04/17/2014
I have to find something better than the Gorillapods (or whatever they call them) for camera attachment to trees. They're not rock solid.
68.) bluecat - 04/17/2014
Fortunately, I don't have to worry about taking any kill photos...
69.) Ventilator - 04/17/2014
If you woulda left your facemask on , nobody would know you were there at all. Mr NATGEAR of the month. :wink
70.) Swamp Fox - 04/17/2014
I haven't gotten to turkey hunt much the last two years, so this ends a dry spell for me. Definitely didn't get one last year, might not have gotten an eastern in 2012. I don't recall, LOL...But dry spells have many causes. Sometimes I have to check to see if I'm holding my mouth wrong...:wink
71.) Ventilator - 04/17/2014
Ive resorted back to fishing. Osceolas will be the death of me.

Funny you say that...There's one pic where I didn't really beat the timer and you can't see me (skin, outline) at all...But I'm JUST there if you look very close...I think I erased it, though.

79.) Wild Bob - 04/18/2014

I'll just be on my own team! Outcasts and loner's welcome. Just call it the 'Un-team!
80.) Deerminator - 04/18/2014
We can still add more. Recrute a couple of guys and bada bing.

Right OBH
81.) Ohbuckhunter - 04/18/2014
Man up and show these boys u got what it takes.
Oh, I've got what it takes...though I don't know what that has to do with turkey hunting.

Seriously though, the land around here that I have access to is utterly and completely devoid of even rumors of gobblers. The only place I've ever even heard them is a WMA where there's no turkey hunting allowed...of course.
88.) Wild Bob - 04/18/2014
Come on Luv2...be on the reject team with me...please!

Any other takers? Where's JC when a feller needs him? Come on, I need a couple more grumpy old men.

(DP, well played on Fargo angle. You made me laugh which is no small feat today!)
89.) Wild Bob - 04/18/2014
Well, I've always been a team of one anyway...:re:
90.) DParker - 04/18/2014
I'll tell you what: If you can't get anyone else to sign up to complete a team then you can go ahead and count me in and I'll make a couple of trips into the field just to give it the old college try (I can always use an excuse for some alone time in the woods before the heat hits). Just remember what I said about the land around here, and be warned that I'd be a near-guaranteed non-contributor.
91.) Wild Bob - 04/18/2014
Ok, listen up y'all...you can ONLY be on MY TEAM...if you have a Peace Keeper Concealed Carry Badge. Period. No Badge, no on team!

(I've already ordered me and Luv2 two of those suckers.)
92.) toxophilite - 04/18/2014

dp actually archery hunts from his vehical..you no like pheasant hunting but you cant shoot across the road..
99.) crookedeye - 04/19/2014

100.) crookedeye - 04/19/2014

I think that was the year where you actually lost points for shooting a button buck..i guess dp's team was ahead with only 2 days to go and he shot this buck and they where deducted 10 points and lost the competition, plus was disqualified for the whole contest..

ok now i'm done.. we all had a good laugh..
