1.) DParker - 06/06/2014
Due to timing issues between my work and my wife's (she's a teacher) I never got to take any time off last summer, so it's been two years since we've taken a vacation. Since the vacation we took two years ago was more my idea of fun (cabin on a northern Wisconsin lake and a lot of fishing) than hers, if the little woman doesn't get to spend a week lazing on a beach soon I'm pretty sure she's going to kill me in my sleep. After talking it over we've decided we want to make a half day or so driving trip out of it, which means the beach will need to be on the Gulf Coast in MS, AL or the FL panhandle. I've ruled out TX because of the psychological need to get out of our home state for a week, and LA because it's coast just isn't replete with vacation-worthy beaches. Surprisingly, as long as we've lived here the only GC vacation area we've spent any time at was Indian Rocks Beach, FL when the kids were little...but that's further into FL (just west of Tampa) than we want to go. We also want someplace that isn't overly crowded, especially with college kids and the like. Just someplace relaxing with an abundance of good local seafood places (the latter is mostly my requirement).

So...has anyone here spent any time at such a place that they can recommend? At the moment I'm looking into a few places in Orange Beach, AL and the area between Pensacola and Destin, FL, but I'm still open to other options, and any input on the matter would be highly appreciated.

I don't know...Canadians seem to like Myrtle an awful lot, LOL.

I had friends from Louisiana who were always big on Destin, but that was 35+ years ago, :re:....I know Myrtle has changed in 35 years, so I'm gonna guess Destin has, too. On the other hand, if you need some cheap or outrageously expensive T-shirts and good fireworks, it might be just the ticket...

If you can wait til November, I think you should consider Panama City, which is when Grills Gone Wild will be there. We will expect a full report, with pictures...:wink

http://grillsgonewildpcb.com/eventandtickets/

In other news, Girls Gone Wild is probably not welcome in Orange Beach anymore from what I understand, so you'll have to factor that into your thinking.
4.) Swamp Fox - 06/06/2014
Also, you could always try Charleston and Savannah...

:wink

7.) Ventilator - 06/06/2014
During my time in the AF, we spent many a weekend excursion to Ft Walton Beach,FL . It is an awesome place , same as Destin as well. Orange Beach, AL is also nice . We hit it a time or two when we didn't have time to drive the extra hour from Keesler AFB. Anywhere in that area you will have some awesome blue water. The Biloxi beaches are decent now, but not in the same class as Ft Walton, Destin.

Actually, my wife is primarily of German and Scottish descent, and is the very definition of "white girl". So whenever we spend any time on a beach in the summer, she is the BBQ.

Thanks. I've added that to my options list and am looking into it now.
9.) bluecat - 06/06/2014
Last year I went to Captiva Island in Florida. Actually a little peninsula. Lots of shells, dolphins, manatees and sandy beaches. It's an option if it's not too far for you. Very few people.
10.) DParker - 06/07/2014
Thanks for all of the feedback. When I got home and started shopping around I found that hotel rooms in all of the areas I was considering were going really fast, so I had to make a decision and book a room quickly. So it looks like we'll be spending a week in Fort Walton Beach, in the FL panhandle (near Destin). Even got a fairly decent deal at a nice hotel right on the beach (thanks, AARP discount.)

There's even a fishing pier nearby. Mmmm...fried pompano.....

No can do. I'll be strictly saltwater fishing from a pier.
13.) Swamp Fox - 06/08/2014
LOL...I can't imagine any bowfisherman surviving a pier-fishing experience... You'd be thrown overboard before you got the first fish up to the rail :wink...Crossed lines make for angry anglers, LOL...It's takes a bold fisherman to go after anything out of croaker class from a pier....:-)

Though it would be fun to watch...
14.) DParker - 06/08/2014
I'm really looking forward to it. I haven't been pier fishing since I left CA in 1989. I used to get up and go so early that I was often the first one on Aliso Pier in South Laguna (alas, the pier no longer exists). The sound of the waves crashing on the beach before sunrise is as relaxing as the quiet of the woods at 0-dark-30.
15.) Swamp Fox - 06/08/2014
It beats the smell of diesel in the morning, that's for sure.

(That's a headboat reference for all the landlubbers, LOL...)

sounds like a good time already. I can see the memories in my head right now. :)

Hope its a great trip!
17.) DParker - 06/15/2014
OK, I'm almost ready now. FedEx showed up yesterday with new Penn 309M reel, 450 yds of 30 lb monofilament and 50 yds of 50 lb flourocarbon line. (Amazon Prime rocks). Now if my drop net shows up tomorrow like it's supposed to I'll be all ready to wipe out a few species of whatever's in the water around the pier. King fish, hammerheads, overly-ambitious kayakers...whatever.

2 weeks to go. Tick-tock.
18.) Swamp Fox - 06/15/2014
:tu:

Good luck!

I thought of you when the news was reporting that they had a bunch of sharks off Orange beach a week or two ago..I love those kinda stories...I'm like "Well, duh..."

Always a big attention-getter to get a shark off a pier. :-) I don't know about down there, but some places frown on it, LOL...
19.) Swamp Fox - 06/15/2014
I have a distant connection to this story. I thought you might enjoy it.

Until 2004, the world record (all tackle) tiger shark. Caught from the Cherry Grove Pier, South Carolina (IGFA still lists the SC shark as a world record, and some sources list a tie).

No boat, no fighting chair. The record stood for 40 years until a boat-caught shark in Australia edged it by 5 lbs. 11 oz. The Cherry Grove Pier shark was weighed after a long delay, having lost at least 10% of its body weight, according to fisheries people.

The shark was 13 feet, 10 inches long, officially, I believe, and 1780 pounds. According to witnesses, the angler lost a tiger the previous day that would have taped 18-20 feet and gone perhaps 2500 pounds!

:jd:

"I think we're gonna need a bigger pier!"

The stories of this shark are classics. These two are well-worth spending a bourbon or two with.

Impending vacation update...

Weather-wise, for the past few months the area around Destin (where I'm headed this Sunday) has been mostly dry as a bone. The current 10-day forecast? A 30% chance of rain every single day I'll be there....except for Thursday, when there's a 70% chance. Perfect.
22.) Swamp Fox - 06/25/2014
Cool!

Good luck!

Don't do anything I wouldn't do!

(Well, okay...You can use your smartphone and program stuff into random gizmos if you want...It's still almost a free country.)
23.) DParker - 06/25/2014

You've been in Texas too long, hombre :wink... 30% is the normal Southern summer afternoon thunderstorm to pump up the humidity for your touring pleasure, LOL

Make sure you fish as many mornings as you can, and retreat to the AC and the roof over your head after lunch, LOL. I always say summer mornings are for fishing and summer afternoons are for thinking about going fishing and wondering what are the chances you'll be struck by lightning if you do.

Yeah, it was freezing. It couldn't have been more than about 91° or 92° F and bout 50% humidity. I should have packed a heavy sweater.

I walked the pier this morning (no fishing yet) just to get a feel for things. Saw a pod of dolphins about 150 yds off the end of the pier and a giant sea turtle about 50 yds away. Then some guy hauled in a big remora, which would seem to suggest that there are some fairly large sharks or other big predator(s) around.

I told my wife she should rent an inflatable raft for the beach tomorrow.
48.) bluecat - 06/30/2014
Get a swimming cap and snorkel that has a triangular dorsal fin on it. That's always a hoot. You'll have the place to yourself.
49.) bluecat - 06/30/2014
DParker went on a Gulf Coast vacation and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.
50.) DParker - 07/01/2014
We all like to poke fun at FL because of the seemingly endless stream of goofy nees stories from here, but I have to give them props for one thing. We stopped by a local Target after dinner tonight for a few provisions (beans, flour, guitar strings...you know, the usual) and this was the display that greeted us just inside the entrance:

'Murica.
51.) Ventilator - 07/01/2014
Is the water still clear blue or has it been tainted by all the damn storms?
52.) Ventilator - 07/01/2014
Oh, and if you are on Ft Walton beach, u may want to look for Fudpuckers restaurant. It was there last time I was . Dates back to the 80s, good food and good times.
53.) DParker - 07/01/2014
First catch. A Northern Mackerel, about 18" long and a bullet in the water. A real fun fight on light tackle.

I got two of those and that was it for the morning. It was pretty slow except for the people jigging for little Hardtails around the pilons.

The water is pretty green, but fairly clear. Enough to see a 4'-5' shark cruising by few feet down.

And, yeah...Fudpuckers is right down the street from street from us.
54.) Ventilator - 07/01/2014
Nice! Just like old times. Get a high n tight buzzcut ,dig a big hole in the sand for your cooler, stick the ol Stars N Stripes in the ground and party on! Many a weekend wasted away in that very spot!
55.) Swamp Fox - 07/01/2014
C'mon, I'm rooting for you. Let's see you pull a cobia or at least a lemon shark over the rail. :tu:

For those that don't know what it's like, 90ish and 50% humidity is like a Indian sweat lodge or a super-steamy sauna without the possibility that any hot Indian maidens or anyone from the Swedish Bikini Team will show up....even the coach.

We had clear skies and 100% humidity at 7 this morning while I was cutting shooting lanes. The temps rose and the humidity fell toward the oh-so-comfy 50% range throughout the day, which is what makes throwing yourself into the creek at quitting time the only sane thing you've done all day.

Yay, summertime! :-)

You're not kidding. It's only day 3 and I've already had too much of it. Having grown up in AZ and NV I'm used to heat (highs up to 120 where I lived in AZ), but I don't have the gills for this steamy stuff. That and I somehow missed slathering up my lilly right white knee yesterday when we hit the beach and now it looks like a stop light.
57.) Swamp Fox - 07/01/2014
LOL...This is why they invented beachside Ferris Wheels and indoor air conditioning. Without them, vast swaths of 'Murica would be uninhabited five months out of the year...:wink
58.) Swamp Fox - 07/01/2014
I'm counting on you to make at least one or two posts about seafood...

There's nothing like burning your knees and maybe the rest of yourself like a piece of bacon... and then retreating to get a shower to wash the salt off and luxuriate in the AC with a cold beverage which is not legal to purchase until after you've become eligible to vote for any moron that strikes your fancy, and possibly learned to kill someone with a bayonet....

And then, off to the seafood restaurant and more air conditioning!

That's my idea of heaven...

I took a girl I dated for a little while to the beach one spring Saturday, and we got lunch at a nice beachside restaurant. Not very many geezers and no college drop-outs, is what I'm sayin'... We both ordered shrimp, but somehow she got it in her head that they weren't cleaned properly. Did I mention she was OCD and a few other letters? Cute girl, but schwew! She was convinced the shrimp were full of ca-ca...I made a small attempt to set her straight, but finally I gave up.

Bottom line? ---More shrimp for me!

Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it.
{/Bubba}

I will say that I've had some damned good gumbo in a couple of places here. "The Crab Shack" next door, and "The Hog's Breath Saloon" in Destin.

Drove to the Naval Air Station in Pensacola today to visit the National Naval Aviation Museum (http://www.navalaviationmuseum.org). Seriously cool collection of over 150 restored military aircraft...primarily Navy/Marine Corps/Coast Guard, but with some exceptions, like this Me-262:

Plenty of other displays and interactive stuff too, like a pair of MaxFlight motion simulators. Well worth a few hours of wandering around and gawking, especially considering the free admission (if you don't count your tax dollars that went into it).

Positive ID. Secondly, I must confess to a man card infraction at the hotel outdoor bar, where I've so far worked my way about half-way through their menu of tropical girlie drinks (mostly rum based):

I wanted to take and post pics of the bikinied girlies, but the wife wouldn't buy my, "But Honey, it's for that single guy on HC. You know, the one I showed you on that turkey hunting show?" excuse. She's such a distrustful woman.

BTW, after 6 or 7 of said rum-based tropical beverages and wandering down to the water I developed what I now refer to as the "Gulf Coast Sobriety Test", which involves walking across the extremely fine and deep beach sand and then ankle-deep through the surf without falling down at any point.

There was a failure, and it wasn't me. I'm just sayin'.

It was a little after 9pm when we stumbled down to the beach, so blaming the sun would have been a hard sell. On the other hand, the moon was kinda' bright.
