1.) DParker - 06/10/2014
Pie is the only civilized answer, of course. But let's see who gets it wrong. :p
2.) Swamp Fox - 06/10/2014
What do I think of Western civilization? I think it would be a very good idea.

--- Mahatma Gandhi

Cake is the correct answer.

Civilization is over-rated.

Please give me a corner piece.

When I want to re-live the depravity of high school, I solve for pie.
3.) DParker - 06/10/2014
And here I thought I knew you.
4.) Swamp Fox - 06/10/2014
I am a man of many frostings...
5.) DParker - 06/10/2014
Stop that! This thread is becoming very silly.

15 views, but only 2 votes. That's what's wrong with America.
6.) Forkie McRut - 06/10/2014
Depends on the pie.

Red Velvet Cake > Lemon, Cherry, Pecan Pie
Apple, Strawberry, Peanut Butter Pie > All other cake
7.) Hunter - 06/10/2014
Cake of course! Any other answer would half-baked!

Stop starting polls after my bed time!! Us old guys need our sleep.
8.) bluecat - 06/10/2014
Generally I'm a pie man - cherry or pecan. But I do like a good lemon cake.
9.) NEBigAl - 06/10/2014
I think the average cake is better than the average pie, but once you get into higher quality stuff the lines really blur
10.) DParker - 06/10/2014
Allow me to present the irrefutable evidence:

You can bake nearly anything...fruit, vegetables, gravy-soaked roadkill...into a flaky pie crust and it will taste delicious.

Squirrel cake? I don't think so, Tim.

I rest my case.
11.) Jon - 06/10/2014
I've never met a pie I didn't eat.

Oh, sure, if what your little sister can make with her Easy Bake Oven is the yardstick. You seem to have fallen for the soft crust of low expectations....

Gimme any cake my old-fashioned grandma used to make...Not that she didn't make mean pies as well...Back in the day when grandmas knew how to bake, and kicked ass at it...
14.) bluecat - 06/10/2014
Good point. You have to like it when grannies kick ass.
15.) Swamp Fox - 06/10/2014

Your Grannie made squirrel cake?

And I don't have a sister. But the cute little blonde girl next door had an Easy Bake Oven, and was an endless supply of itty-bitty cupcakes. OK, so my 7 year-old culinary standards weren't that high. At least I'd stopped eating paste.
17.) billy b - 06/10/2014

:-)

I thought all the gushy stuff lead to broken hearts.

Kody tells his daughter and her boyfriend: 'I am very well aware of how the heart works at 17 and 18 versus at 25.'

The awkward conversation continued: 'What we want to prevent as parents are the danger zones. Kissing, holding hands that all leads to broken hearts.

Also, it's a community pie...

I tried to find a quote of the international-cooperation and lead-from-behind gobbledygook he was spouting today with the Australian prime minister but I came up snake eyes. The top Yahoo search result today when you type in "Obama" is "Obama impeachment 2014", by the way, LOL. No lie.

American leadership in the twenty-first century is going to involve our capacity to build international institutions, coalitions that can act effectively, and the promotion of norms, rules, laws, ideals and values that create greater prosperity and peace, not just in our own borders, but outside as well.--BHO, From a few days ago...

My only question: How's that been working out for you lately? :re:

Here are some norms and laws he admires:

We all know that pie makes the world go around; a world without pie would render us all non-hetero or make us plants, or some kind of freak insects. This just cannot be. Even if you're not one for blueberry, strawberry, rhubarb, mince-meat, pumpkin, or any of the assorted custard or nut pies....you just can't be American if you don't pledge to like apple pie! :hb:
That's a hoot DP. Think Swampy can interpret those graphs?
Well let's see.

First of all, do we even know that this so-called scientist is an American? Where does he stand on global warming , and who's his favorite character on The Big Bang Theory? Also, what's his high score on Super Mario Brothers?

Okay. If we accept, by the answers to those questions, that he is in fact a scientist and not just wearing a lab coat because he thinks it looks cool, let's begin:

Chart Number One: What wussy little internet science graph geek needs more than three bites to finish a piece of cake or pie? Plus his data seems wholly subjective even though he compiled a massive study group of one.

Chart Number Two: What pansy-ass community-organizing type needs equal distribution of pastry goodness? If he is smart enough to recognize that corner pieces of cake are often the most desirable, he should work to get what he wants, like any good American would...or would have before The Life of Julia went on offer. But no... Instead, he wants someone to cut the pie equally for him, and hand him a slice. He's happy as long as everybody's slice is the same. There's a whole political philosophy built around that idea, and it hasn't worked out too well.

Chart Number Three: What strip-mall shopping, minivan-driving, sandal-wearing cul-de-sac dweller is eating pies with crusts he describes as "meh"? I'm supposed to consider quote-unquote data from someone like that? He shoots himself in his own pasty pedicured foot.

Chart Number Four: Not a chart, or even a diagram. What kind of basement-dwelling dweeb calls that scientific? Besides, anyone with a can of Pringles can draw a circle. That's versatile? I'd like to see him argue that circles are more versatile than a potential infinity of things with corners. Besides, cakes can come in circles, if he's really that boring that he can't deal with change. But then again, he obviously thinks circles and pies are awesome, and admires their standardization. I'm sure he thinks Pringles are the pinnacle of the Industrial Revolution, as well.

Chart Number Five: What kind of lonely momma's boy puts a birthday pie on the same level with birthday cake? Who would even imagine such a thing? Again, do we know this rocket scientist is even an American? Birthday pie? Really? Also, by leaving out Mardi Gras cakes from his study altogether, you can tell he is a virgin who will never see any female breasts no matter how many beads he can get his hands on once he learns to drive. Finally, his unfamiliarity with Halloween cakes indicates he has no friends that are any fun, and with Christmas cakes indicates that while he may be inordinately attached to his mother, she has done him few favors.

Chart Number Six: What kind of fruit-and-vegetable-eating puss tracks the ill-effects of consuming too much pie or cake? How fat is this guy that he's contracting diabetes two and a half days after eating some cake? Has he ever had to do the Persimmon Pie Peel-out from a social situation, or even on his own with no one to change his diaper? I think this chart raises more questions than it answers.

But I rest my case.

I make no apologies for liking frosting...or icing. It's part of the cakes that it's part of. If someone wants to eat just pie crust and forget about the filling, then he can make fun of people who admit they love frosting. :wink
Swampy, what is your favorite cake? I don't think you ever said. I'm curious, what is it?
The favorites that come to mind are Black Forest cake, just about any kind of chocolate cake (chocolate frosting) cheesecake (my mom made a *killer* cheesecake and also a slightly less awesome version when she got on a low fat kick and I didn't whine loud enough) poundcake, devil's food, red velvet, some coffeecakes...and whatever you'd call one that my grandmother made for birthdays and such....butter cake, maybe?---yellow cake, nothing fancy but incredibly yummy with a thick, hard sugar icing (usually).

CHEESECAKE

Function
Cheesecake is a pie or torte that is made all throughout the world. While it is called cheesecake, it really does not fit the definition for cake very well. Instead, it better fits the definition of a pie or torte. Some claim cheesecake as a torte because the large number of eggs are the only leavener in the cake. Others point to it as a pie because the filling is made separately from the crust and then poured in. Regardless of its classification, cheesecake is a thick and creamy dessert with a dense texture and an either sweet or tangy flavor. Almost all recipes in the United States and Canada feature cream cheese as the primary ingredient.

When I say "civilization" I 'm talking about places where people actually live and shop daily...not the Arts District, or Deep Ellum or any other downtown area full of nothing but specialty boutiques and tatoo parlors. The D/FW Metroplex contains about 18 million people, nearly all of whom satisfy their pie/cake urges with a quick trip to the corner Kroger/Albertsons/Tom Thumb/etc...not the Pie Emporium with it's offering of a grand total of 7 varieties of pie...which according to your argument would mean that about 99% of all pies are not...you know....pies.

So...did your last cake come from some place like the Piggly Wiggly, or a bakery that specializes in $600 wedding cakes, and where you're about as likely to find a basic angel food cake as you are a blueberry pie?

I believe the issue is completely and utterly lost on you. "...some version..."? That's a non-started to begin with. It's already a pie; despite the cheesecake nomenclature. For every characteristic you think qualifies something as a pie, there is a version of cheesecake that doesn't conform.

Do you have your exchange student with you, still? I think she is Japanese? Ask her if the cheesecake she's familiar with from that part of the world is a pie or a cake, or something else. I'd be interested in her answer. Not that I know what her answer will be or that it proves anything; I'm just interested. There's a cheesecake that comes from Japan (I think) that I've had a couple of times...It's not pie.

Also, as I've tried to point out, there are cheesecakes that don't conform to the crust requirement, and cheesecakes that don't conform to the soft creamy filling requirement. Between my mom and my grandmother, I can think of at least four versions of cheesecake. Maybe one you could call a pie. The older recipes? No way.

Torte cake! Excellent!--Another Grammaw specialty! I'd forgotten all about it.

I might have even had Lithuanian torte cake a time or two, but it would have been way back in the old days. Not by my grandma, I don't think, though that's the kind of thing she might have been good at, from all the other evidence. More likely some distant Prussian relative, two or three generations removed from the old country, LOL...Or on a business trip to the upper Midwest, which would make for a less-good story.
And yet you don't buy cheesecake at a pie shop. You can get it at a cake shop.

Just in case there was some alternate universe going on down there that I was not aware of, I checked in the greater Dallas metroplexiburb area for a pie shop that sold cheesecake and...not that it was a surprise...I came up with nada.

I'm aware there are all sorts of lame pastries that purport to be cheesecakes. I've even put some of them in my mouth. The cheesecakes I call cheesecakes are most decidedly not pies.

Cake: Use milk to choke it down. Better made into cupcakes to help choke it down; more frosting and icing please to help choke it down. Anything else to drink with it? Oh no, only milk will do.

Pie: The pretty lady said, 'Here's your pie, would you like coffee, tea or me with your pie.' So great, fried pies invented to take the goodness with you.
