1.) luv2bowhunt - 07/18/2014
Tomorrow is the day I'm finally going to get a new bow. After 10 years of the Bowtech Justice it's time for an upgrade. I will shoot everything I can get my hands on at the shop (even Hoyt), and walk out with the winner.

Just wondering what things you guys consider as most important when picking out a bow. For me it is a smooth draw cycle and solid back wall. Those are non-negotiable for me.

Alex thanks for having this wonderful site where I can chat with knowledgeable archers and all around swell people.:-)
2.) bluecat - 07/18/2014
What do the Drury Brothers shoot? :wink
3.) luv2bowhunt - 07/18/2014
They shoot whatever company was the highest bidder this year.
4.) bluecat - 07/18/2014
For me I look for a bow with some length to it. They are getting harder and harder to find. Bows are getting smaller and smaller. I want some length because I feel they are more stable, less nock pinch and most importantly they look really really cool. Because they are bigger they are heavier and thus less shock. My latest bow is 35" ATA.

Most bows today have the string stop. They really make a difference in shock. Not a big fan of the roller guard as that means you will have to deal with torque issues but it looks like they are here to stay.

Shoot 'em all objectively and pick the one you like. Good luck.
5.) Ventilator - 07/18/2014
E35 is a nice bow....did I just say that?

The Mathews Chill X is a 35 incher that appears to have the right stuff. The Chill XDS is a 30" bow 6in brace 330 fps at 29" draw. impressive for an M bow.

My Strother SHO from last year is great, the Vital for this year has a fairly stiff draw cycle but pulls evenly to the back wall. Both are short bows.

Expedition archery is worth looking into as well as New Breed. New Breed supposedly has their chit together. I shot my friend Todd`s New Breed in Canada this year. Very nice shooter and longer ATA.
6.) Swamp Fox - 07/18/2014
I'm not that wrapped up in a solid back wall. You can shoot well what you practice well with, and there's something to be said for at least learning on a bow with which you have to pay attention to your hold. I agree a solid back wall feels nice, but having come to that discovery from nearly two decades of bows without solid back walls, it's not a deal-maker.

If I feel buzz or jump at the shot, that's a big turn-off but not necessarily a deal killer. Too much of it is.

Speed is not much of a consideration to me.

I like 34 in. ATA, though I do have one bow that's considerably shorter than that which I like a lot. I would definitely start my search for a new bow in the 34-inch neighborhood. I would also look for a smooth, easy-to-start-and- let-down draw. While it used to be a highly-prized nicety for me, my shoulder now tells me it is a necessity.

So put me down for those draw characteristics as my must-have.
7.) Ventilator - 07/18/2014
I forgot to add...The new Strother Moxie is very much improved on what was a great longer ATA bow to begin with. Very nice and accurate target bow that comes in camo.
8.) Hunter - 07/18/2014
How many different lines of bows do they carry? Just curious.

I am with you on a solid back wall. Been using the DXT for about 6 years now and I have had a couple of occasions where adrenaline has led to a little extra pull on the string resulting in a high shot.

Been thinking about a longer bow also. Found a Bowtech Sentinel laying around here and I think I may give it a try this year. Been shooting it a little and I think I will like it.

Of course, if Swampy or Kenny wanted to send me one of their Strother Wraths that they have sitting in the closet...........
9.) Ventilator - 07/18/2014
lol, I do have a Mathews Switchback XT with new limbs, strings, cables , apache rest and stokerized stab I need to sell. :tu:
10.) Swamp Fox - 07/18/2014
I'd be all over that Switchback XT if I didn't have one already...Though that has the classic "Mathews" back wall, LOL.

That's my "short" bow that I referenced above. :-)

The Strother Wrath is a nice bow but since I already had an SX Rush, it didn't trip my trigger. Plus I like the draw cycle on the Rush better. If you can find one of those out there, it deserves a serious look.

I think the Moxie would be the other Strother that I'd like these days, though I've never shot one, even the older ones.

I'd try a couple of the Elites and Hoyts if I were in the market, which I'm not, but it's fun to speculate.

I've said for several years that I have unfriended Mathews until they change that butt-ugly riser...:wink

I think it's seven, from a quick look at www.strotherarchery.com, plus one ladies' bow. A few of the seven have been out a few years and then there are their variations....Which I kinda like. I'm constantly complaining that companies seem to stop making stuff I like as soon as I find out I like it. :bang:
Just wondering what things you guys consider as most important when picking out a bow.
Psychologically speaking, it's harder to shoot an ugly bow. It's a saying I pick up from Crookedeye. He's hard on a bow. You know, from the bow's perspective. I think he was using a putter in golf analogy; an got mixed up.

(It's shoots great, but dang its ugly. Would you still get it?)

I can't wait to see until you pick one out and get it. Good luck and good hunting.

Is there such a thing as getting a bow that's fits one's all around shootability preferences?

I'm posting it in the Women Hunters/Facebook thread, since that's where it's relevant. I wrote it just as the Kendall Jones thing was hitting the fan, and it ran at the height of the hysteria. My lede was Eva Shockey, though, since the KJ thing had just gotten on my radar and at the time was just at a low boil.

You had better have a different strategy than what I say, no self respecting bow in the world is gonna pick you:wink
28.) Wild Bob - 07/18/2014
I'd go with the Diamond Infinity...It would be the last bow you'd ever need to buy; you could crank it up for starters, then lower the draw weight and reduce the draw length the older you get, thereby working backwards... :-)

I'd go with whatever she's having... :wink

At least that way she might get that limb tip from being ruined in the rocks. I'm just thinking of the bow.

When I saw this I thought of a little writing project I was working on but scrapped, at least for the time being. Maybe it's even relevant to the thread, LOL...

Here's the rough draft:

(Hey, I'm a little bored, but still at my desk...)

Review of New Gear Reviews:

Against my better judgment, I recently picked up the Whitetail Journal Buyer's Guide
and the Bowhunter Gear Special... [BREAK]

So, here goes: I'll start with a review of the bow reviews/info, and then maybe move on to other categories.

We'll use the Snooze-Snore Score for Outdoor Writing (Multiphasic) to rate how worthwhile a review is to read for yourselves. A higher number translates to a better review, on a scale from Zero (Dirt Nap) to 10 (Who Needs Caffeine?).

I spent the eleven dollars so you don't have to.

First, the Whitetail Journal: 112 pages with no compound reviews, one crossbow review; three compound blurbs, eight crossbow blurbs; four compound ads and four crossbow ads. Highlights of the crossbow review? Eight point three pounds, a picatinny rail and a stock that doesn't shatter when the bow is shot in cold weather. Woo-hoo!

In the Bowhunter piece on 2014 bows, the author says, "It's now common for bows to measure in the 28" to 32" range, weigh in under 4 lbs., and blow arrows through chronographs at speeds of 340 and even 350 fps."

Really?

He proceeds to "review" 24 bows, 14 of which meet the ATA range, 13 making weight, and 9 are up to speed.. Only two bows hit all three criteria. (Seven specs of various types which were not disclosed are assumed not to meet the benchmarks.) One bow was obviously a youth/ladies bow, and two others with wide draw-weight adjustment ranges could be. At least one significant bow company was not represented in the review at all, while five that I've never heard of were. The "reviews" are great if you want a recitation of specs and quotes from marketing managers, and don't want insight into feel, fit and finish or any interesting details.

Rating on the Outdoor Writing Snooze-Snore Matrix: Solid 6, At the intersection of Taking An Antihistamine and Covering Your Head With A Pillow.

++++++

Bow sights:

WJ: Five blurbs including three yawns and two items that might wake you up from a light nap, but which are unexplained. I guess that's what the manufacturers' websites are for.

Snooze-Snore Score: Gentleman's Two: The only way to have scored lower would be if the author did not come from a good family.

BH: Eighteen sights blurbed, with a modest amount of detail to go with the modest amount of useful innovation or improvements displayed in the sights reviewed.. Noticeable trends include pre-calculated yardage tapes for slider sights, glow rings or other uses of luminescent tape, color choices in dampeners or pins, and buit-in torque aids. Yardage tape placement is something a few adjustable models make into a key feature. Otherwise, the big news seems to be that the cost of sights is going up more than gas and groceries. Of 18 sights reviewed, one sight's price was not listed, five run from $125 down to $75, and 12 are $150 or more. Nine of those are north of $190. For that kind of money, a sight should shoot out an electro-magnetic pulse that turns the deer broadside for you and then teleports it out of the woods to your truck after the shot.

Snooze-Snore Score: ___________________

If anyone can find me an embeddable video of this, I'll send them some authentic NC BBQ or something out of a grab bag, their choice, because I've been dying to use it somewhere in my internet travels:

On one Law and Order SVU episode, Stabler is canvassing a newsstand owner about a potential witness who might have used a nearby pay phone. He's trying to get a description. The guy says the woman "had a great ass," and he noticed she was wearing thong panties under her black pants. Stabler says, "Did you get a look at her face?", and the guy says no.

Stabler says, "You mean you noticed her thong but you can't tell me what she looked like?" and the guy sticks his big ol' stogie in the corner of his fat mouth (think what a cartoon bullfrog would look like at 70) and says, "Hey, what can I tell ya? I'm an ass man!...I don't apologize for it!"

Funniest line in however many decades that show's been on...I'd bust a nut to be able to use it, so help a brother out...:-)
38.) Deerminator - 07/19/2014
check the," NEW bows for 2014 thread.
I like to go with a target typ bow for hunting. kinda the best of bolth worlds.
so every thing is hunting related. eg minimal movement for the draw and the let down.
good let of percentage.
For giveness comes with longer ata bows.

The vegans are gonna be in trouble when we discover plants scream when you pluck them...

Human arrogance has always assumed we are evolutionarily superior to plants, but it appears that modern science may be the antidote to this egocentric view.

Researchers in the UK have discovered an extensive underground network connecting plants by their roots, serving as a complex interplant communication system... a “plant Internet,” if you will...

One organism is responsible for this amazing biochemical highway: a type of fungus called mycorrhizae. Researchers from the University of Aberdeen devised a clever experiment to isolate the effects of these extensive underground networks. They grew sets of broad bean plants, allowing some to develop mycorrhizal nets, but preventing them in others.

They also eliminated the plants’ normal through-the-air communication by covering the plants with bags. Then they infested some of the plants with aphids. The results were remarkable...

Give us a report about the bow and your whole shopping experience when you get a chance...We also want to know how the customer service was. Did they offer you coffee and donuts while you went around kicking tires? Threaten to kick you out of the shop at any point? Does the salesman have any hair left after dealing with you?

Another Bowtech was my second bet, btw...
61.) luv2bowhunt - 07/21/2014
Small shop that carried Bowtech, Hoyt, Mathews, and Force I think. Shot the Hoyt Faktor, Mathews Creed and Chill, Bowtech Carbon Overdrive and Experience.

The Bowtech Carbon Overdrive was eliminated on the first 2 shots. Too much hand shock and I absolutley hated the draw cycle of the destroyer cam.

Mathews did not impress. They would've had to to overcome the ugly factor of the gawd awful risers. I mean they were nice but didn't reach out and grab me, plus there was a bit of hand shock which surprised me. I shot the Chill about 15 times at least and it just didn't feel as good as the Faktor or Experience.

The Faktor was really nice. I liked everything about it and I spent a good bit of time shooting this against the Experience. Shot them side by side for several rounds and decided on the Experience. I liked the draw a tad better, luved the solid back wall, and the bow was dead in the hand after the shot.

Only extra I kept on the bow was the rest. They talked me into keeping the Fuse Ultra-Rest, which I normally would've had them take off. They assured me it is nearly indestructable, surviving the Yukon and Africa by their customers.

Ha, Yukon and Africa. I laugh at the ruggedness of those places compared to PA State Forests.:wink

.........no coffee and doughnuts. Had to wait on one goober who wanted new nocks on his arrows (couldn't handle this delicate procedure on his own) and another goober who had to ask what the difference was between field points and broadheads. But we all had to start somewhere I suppose.
I fully expect the 'most users ever online' to move to today. No doubt everyone will be crowded in here looking to see which bow I picked. Alex will owe me big time for the spike in website hits.

Did anyone ever see a recent pic of Alex with a bow in his hands? I'm not talking about some old photo opp. he had taken at Battle Mountain. I know he owns a camera, snow blower, and a giant pig, but what about a bow?

I don't think alex hunts. Only his brother Mike. alex is there for photo support and naked lady pics.

They're my wives old cook books...
What kind of backwoods Dutch family you got going on up there? Next thing we know you'll have your own reality show...None of the wives like venison; the husband is on a quest to arrow a mythical Booner that lives on the Gettysburg battleground. He must elude the park police and tourists from Philadelphia while keeping everyone happy, including several daughters and anyone who's ever damaged a car in a Pennsylvania pothole...
74.) luv2bowhunt - 07/21/2014
Pinterest is the BEST thing that ever happened to my wifes cooking. Seriously, almost everything she tries off of there is a big hit. She made lemon cooler cookies 2 days ago and they are out of sight.

Checked the cameras once, I got one that looks like he's going to be a giant. Can't wait to check it in a couple weeks. Of course I'll never see him in reality, but it's nice to know they're out there.

I hate to admit it, but the same is true here. My wife's addicted to Pinterest, constantly trying out recipes she finds there...and there hasn't been a loser yet.

DP, get her to find the lemon cooler cookies or the mac 'n cheese with 4 or 5 cheeses in it, including Velveeta. The mac 'n cheese blew me away and I hate Velveeta cheese.

I'd never admit it to her, but I'll do whatever it takes to keep her on Pinterest. New tablet, laptop, NASA command center, whatever.
81.) Swamp Fox - 07/21/2014
Also, would be interested in hearing a description of how the Faktor (which one?) and the Experience drew and handled...There are very few Bowtechs that I've liked on the draw, and at least one Hoyt that shocked me with how nice it was (Hoyt 'Em or somebody else from Battle Mountain would have to remind me which model it was)...

And don't tell me that I'd have to Experience the Faktor for myself, or that my Experience would depend on a lot of subjective Faktors...

That's like saying all bows are great and you should just go out and shoot as many as you can...:re:

That's not very helpful, and just phoning it in...:wink
82.) luv2bowhunt - 07/21/2014
Describing how a bow draws is like reading a wine tasting.

The Faktor opened with a strong floral bouquet that hits the back of the pallette up front in the draw, while the Experience brought out the more subtle, oakey, earthy flavors in the valley. Each with a solid, but not overpowering backwall, the lends itself well with chicken, lamb or venison.

It was the Faktor 34 and I thought the draws were very similar, with the Hoyt not loading as quick as the Bowtech. Both were quiet, but the Experience seemed more dead in the hand.

I didn't chrono either one, but I'm sure the Bowtech seemed faster. ??? But who really no's all this stuff anyway?
83.) Swamp Fox - 07/21/2014
LOL...That'll work for me...I'm a $10 bottle of wine kinda guy...

Thanks.

honestly; that was superbly Well put luv2 freakin excellent!!:tu:

87.) billy b - 07/22/2014
Well. can you shoot it good yet, show us the shooting pics & groups...........geeese, you know what the program is, show us your stuff. Better yet make a video:tap::tap:
88.) luv2bowhunt - 07/22/2014
I never shoot good billy.:wink Seriously, I am only ever around the dots, rarely are they all in the middle of them. The older I get the harder it is to hold the dern pin on the dots.

Arrow through the ribcage, that's all that matters to me.:tu:

I am 5' 9". The shorter axle to axle bows are much nicer for me. I've shot it twice, feels like a real winner to me. Can't see my arrows fly at all. But I'm half blind now too, so.............

Screw both of you and the mules you rode in on.

I'm shooting decent groups, getting used to her. I was reading that thread you posted from AT. They are way ruder over there than I ever was on here.:re: Except maybe once, twice tops.

Really, I'm up for anything at this point.

My season starts on Friday. I'm gonna try really hard not to shout "Sayonara, suckers!" out the window on my way to Camp Swampy. :wink

Does Camp Swampy have any modern conveniences? Internet Access? Don't think your getting off the hook that easy Buster Brown.

I'll turn this car around.

Conversing with Luv2 is like playing "whack-a-mole".
106.) Hunter - 08/14/2014
"Camp Swampy" is just the imaginary place in his mind where he flees to in hard times. Has anybody ever seen pics of Camp Swampy?
107.) Wild Bob - 08/14/2014
Now that's an open ended invitation Hunter (pic of Camp Swampy)...I can only imagine what'll pop-up here soon on that one.
108.) Swamp Fox - 08/14/2014
Hunter has it correct that Camp Swampy really is a state of mind. Floyd's been to Camp Swampy in Virginia and in South Carolina, while I'd have trouble getting Luv2 to even consider visiting Camp Swampy even if it were just over the Pa. line. :wink

There are a couple of versions of Camp Swampy these days. One is open air, open fire and open to mosquitoes. The other has AC, screens, a stove and lots of pots and pans.

I'll try to post some pictures this year of Camp Swampy since that's been on my to-do list for a while anyway, but if you dig deep in the HC archives you might be able to find a few on your own.

It'll be like a treasure hunt! :-)

One thing you can say about Camp Swampy:

It is a silly place.
So how's that bow G? Are you enjoying it, wearing out the target?
The bow is shooting awesome. Extremely quiet and dead in the hand after the shot. Still getting used to the draw and hold, but I am very pleased with it. Blowing arrows through my old Block target and even going through the GlenDel Buck in a few areas.
