1.) DParker - 03/16/2015
Although my posting hiatus remains in effect for the time being, I'm making an exception here. Quite a while back I was kicking around the idea of buying a mid-sized pickup truck and there were several members here who gave me a lot of useful feedback/advice on the matter. Since I finally got around to pulling the trigger this past weekend I thought I'd share the results of all that research, advice-getting and shopping.

The candidates were some flavor of Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier or...since they've returned to this part of the market with a vengeance...a Chevy/GMC Colorado/Canyon. GM appears to have done an outstanding job with their reintroduction of the Colorado/Canyon, and are now offering what looks like probably the best truck in the segment....with price tags to match. And I'm sure I don't have to talk up the Tacoma to anyone. It's ownership of the mid-sized market speaks for itself. But after a whole lot of consideration (and more number crunching than I care to do again if I can help it) I opted for a 2015 Nissan Frontier SV Crew Cab 5-speed AT 4x4 with the "Value Truck Package" (backup camera w/obstacle sonar alert, dual-zone temp controls, spray-on bedliner, heated front seats, Utili-track channels in the bed, fog lights, sliding/removable bed extender, security system and towing receiver+hitch). It had been on the lot for a few months, so in addition to talking them down on price I got them to toss in step rails, mud flaps and locking lug nuts for nada:

It's also granddaughter approved!

The basic design of the current generation Frontier hasn't changed since 2005, and while that's a point of criticism by many (the interior is outdated, to be sure...but then again, so am I) I actually find it to be a plus. They've had a decade to work out any bugs in the design (and there certainly were some early on) and I'll have 10 years worth of models to choose from should I ever need a 2nd hand part from the junkyard. Most accessories for older models will fit also. And while the gas mileage is definitely not what it ought to be in this day and age for a vehicle of its size, and it flat out sucks compared to the GM offerings (and most full-sized PUs for that matter), I did the math and determined that even if gas averaged $4/gallon for the next 10 years it would take me that long for the better mileage of the Tacoma and GM trucks to pay for the purchase price differences, based on comparable features.

So....there it is. Now I just need to find some mud to play in.

She's a cutie and I ain't talking bout that truck.

Congrats!
3.) bluecat - 03/16/2015
Warning, if you continue to put gas in it and give it a place to spend the evening it will probably stay around.

So...they're kinda' like dogs and kids?

Very nice, I almost bought my wife a new Colorado last week but she settled on a terrain.

You're a generous man, Billy. As much as I tried to talk myself into a Colorado (they're very nice, and I really dig the mileage they're coaxing out of that V6), one equipped similar to my Frontier would have cost nearly $5K more...assuming I could find what I wanted on a local lot in the first place, and have enough leverage to talk them down a few bucks the way I was able to with the Nissan dealer. They've gotten a lot of very favorable press from the automotive mags, and seem to be in high demand because of it.
7.) bluecat - 03/16/2015
Hey, I "almost" bought my wife a Porsche but she settled for an 84 Chevette.
8.) DParker - 03/16/2015
My wife says she almost married George Clooney, but she settled.

Heeeey....wait a minute....
9.) billy b - 03/17/2015
I was at the top of the list for Barbara:hb::grin:

Hey DP, good to see you around! Nice truck and you got the right color!
11.) Deerminator - 03/17/2015
Way cool Can't wait to drive it.:-)

You should have a poll for which tire and rim combo to get. Ya gotta get rims, and a gun rack.
And ditto what Bluecat said, she's a cutie.:tu:

Well, yeah...but Alexander The Great was already married, wasn't he? :wink
Hey DP, good to see you around! Nice truck and you got the right color!
I actually wanted something different. My previous vehicle, which I drove for 9 years, was a similar shade of red, and I really like the electric blue Nissan has. But the Frontier's interior is only available in two colors: Beige and a dark grey (charcoal, really) they call "steel" for some bizarre reason. In the heat of TX summers a dark interior is a no-go for me, so it had to be beige. And as it turned out, beige is only available with the "Cayenne Red" exterior. So...red it is....again.

Thanks. Grandma and I are spoiling her rotten. It's our sworn duty.

Congrats on your new truck, enjoy! :tu:

(One word of warning: A freind of mine bought a Nissan truck a couple of years ago and immediately copped a couple of speeding tickets the first month he owned it. He kept telling me he couldn't get used to how nice it drove and how peppy it was...be careful! )

Thanks Bob. It's funny you should say that, as I did find that while I was driving it home on the interstate I had to use the cruise control to keep my speed in check because every time I looked at the speedometer I was going significantly faster than it felt like I was. Also, given the relatively weak MPG this thing delivers I need to adopt some more conservative driving habits anyway to maximize what it will yield.

They could have at least thrown in a phonebook so you could see over the dash. Jeesh.

Who needs to see over the dash when you have The Force[SUB]TM[/SUB]?

You don't have to buy a truck every time you want to post a picture of your grandaughter. We understand.

maybe a sound system for the new truck
27.) bluecat - 03/18/2015
I think this is the type of sound system most likely to be on that truck.
