We went out over the weekend, but things were slow. Not sure what we were doing wrong...but obviously we were doing it pretty well since we didn't catch any fish.

But, we made the most of a beautiful day and enjoyed some time on the water. :tu:

Here are few pictures from our outting:

Thanks for posting. Gorgeous water you got there.

I've had a kick-ass summer cold, three sets of visitors and lots of hunting-related stuff to do in the last few weeks, so my fishing-related stuff has been limited to multiple runs to Dick's, Gander Mountain, Bass Pro, and yesterday I finally made it to Cabelas. I'm on a mission to organize and instill some sense in my rod and reel arsenal...Plus there have been some good sales and promotions going on lately.

And not only on rods and reels. I stumbled upon a screaming deal on a trolling motor which I wanted anyway but was procrastinating on. The discount is more than enough for me to have the shaft cut to the length I want (was going to have to do that with any motor no mater how cheap or expensive) and pay for a remote control operating system (also necessary for my plans) with some bucks left over, which I already know where THAT's going, LOL.

I could save some money by trying to cut the shaft and do the rewiring myself---ala the DIY Projects Thread---but I'm not confident I want my first stab at this to be on a motor of this quality. If an authorized repair center does the work, I maintain my warranty.

LOL!

Went crappie fishing last Friday for two hours, after a 30 minute boat ride I caught 18 jumbo crappie, it almost took me longer to filet them than it did to catch em, this was my first trip this year & it took a little while to get set up to knock the sides off.
6.) Deerminator - 06/08/2015
Good stuff
:hb:
7.) Deerminator - 06/08/2015
I'll be getting the boat ready this week.:tu:

Do you crappie fish through the summer? if so, I want to pick your brain. Usually I quit altogether sometime in May, usually around mid-month. Not just because it becomes tougher, but mostly because there are other fish to chase...but still...

I can catch some crappie at night into early June, but that's about as late as I've ever put a real effort into them, with the exception of winter on vertical structure (not brush piles).
9.) billy b - 06/09/2015
I never fish the spawn, I wait till they get on deeper structure 15 to 20 feet & vertical jig a I/8 rubber jig, thru the summer I will mostly fish the 18 to 24 foot deep pillars under the bridges. Let the jig down to the bottom & steadily wind the jig straight up, the steadier you hold your rod, the more bites you get. They will not run off with it, you'll just feel a slight tick, that's your clue to set the hook. Better else just drive down here & I'll show you in person.:wink
10.) Swamp Fox - 06/09/2015
Huh! I'll give that a whirl. Winding straight up with no rod action is a good tip.

Turkey hunting and year-round deer mania has really put a hurting on my spring crappie fishing---all my fishing, really---and we usually have good fishing for other stuff after the crappie leave the shallows. I do a lot more summer fishing than I used to way back when to make up for lost time, but crappie have to compete to get my attention. What I probably have to do is just carve out a few hours of each trip just for them, and make a little milk run.

What I really need is a buddy who is blind and mute and has no sense of direction but who owns a pontoon boat, so I can get serious about sinking some fish attractors on dark nights in January. :wink The bridges get pounded pretty hard here.
11.) billy b - 06/09/2015
I forgot to add, no more that 6 lb. line.
12.) Swamp Fox - 06/09/2015
That's what I usually use. Mono, nothing fancy, except I keep thinking a high-vis line would help on the fall if I could get over my hang-ups about using it in water that has lost some of the usual stain we have many places I fish. That's a summer thing if we're not getting much rain. Don't usually have to be too paranoid about it, though, LOL. Blackwater spots and pocosin lakes stay clear, but I don't fish for crappie there.

I may also eventually join the 21st century and start using more fluorocarbon lines, but I'm not there yet. Do you have a line you like to use?
13.) Wild Bob - 06/09/2015
What's that you say Swampy? You caught Mono on the pontoon??? :wink :hb:
14.) billy b - 06/09/2015
He deals with them trashy girls:wink
15.) Triton Rich - 06/10/2015
I'm leaving tomorrow on a fishing trip with Dad. A day and a half of musky fishing near Park Falls Wisconsin and a couple of days on lake Gogebic in upper Michigan. I've read that Gogebic was a great walleye lake in the past and has dropped off lately. Hopefully, we can still find a few.
16.) Swamp Fox - 06/10/2015
That's great, Rich. My dad was not a fisherman, but he encouraged my rather over-the-top interest in fishing in his own way...LOL

I hope you have a great time. :tu:

I've been trying to play this song for 18 hours now, LOL. I'm not getting any sound on dang youtube....I'm just gonna throw it up there and hope the embed works.

18.) Wild Bob - 06/10/2015
Good luck with your fishing Rich! Sounds like an awesome trip, I hope to see you posing with one of those big Muskys. :tu:

Fishing with my dad brings back a lot of good memories, enjoy every minute Rich.
20.) Triton Rich - 06/11/2015
Thank you Billy! Not too many of these trips left. I will be concentrating on enjoying the time rather than catching the biggest fish. Of course, if I catch a big musky on the way, that'd be OK too! :-)
21.) Swamp Fox - 06/11/2015
What's that you say Swampy? You caught Mono on the pontoon??? :wink :hb:
No, but I've caught it on my propeller. Quite an ordeal, and very embarrassing.

I don't have a big pontoon, but if I did, I don't think I could keep girls with mono off of it. Most girls who like to fish have mono.
22.) bluecat - 06/11/2015
Interesting, and you can also get gonorrhea from a tractor.

I'm not getting any sound...

The other video I posted plays fine.

The volume is a little low, you may have to boost the volume on the clip or on your computer, or both.

I can only go up to 11...

:bang:

:-)
27.) Triton Rich - 06/17/2015
Well, we caught a few fish but no bigguns. Some small northern pike and muskies in Wisconsin and 50 or so smallmouths out of lake Gogebic in MI. Just about every smally was the same size, maybe a pound and a half.

Great pics Rich, I've never caught a pike but the smallies are fantastic fighters. Great job.
29.) Swamp Fox - 06/17/2015
Nice pics!

Fish that size don't come any bigger!---As my favorite uncle used to say...

Lots of enjoyment to be had in those moments when a fish first bites and you don't know what you have...and in fishing with the right people :-).

:tu:
30.) Deerminator - 06/17/2015
excellent!!!:tu:

great pics:tu:
31.) Triton Rich - 06/17/2015
It is amazing to me the quality of photos a cell phone can take these days! I guess I should have mentioned for my southern friends that the fish in the first pic is a musky. Muskies and northern pike look exactly alike except for the markings and a couple other less obvious features.
32.) Wild Bob - 06/17/2015
Rich - Nice! :tu: That's what its all about in my opinion, good company, good times...the fish are just icing on the cake.

Thanks for sharing your trip with us.
33.) Wild Bob - 07/03/2015
A couple of small fish...
My older son wanted to try out his new fishing pole, so my wife took him and a buddy of his to do a little shore fishing and he caught a good eating size Northern:

Yep, Northern Pike.
37.) Swamp Fox - 07/04/2015
I found this chart showing the differences between pike, muskie and tiger muskie (hybrid).

What rodholder is that, WB, and what keeps the rod from going bye-bye if you're not moving at a good clip? LOL

I'm not sure what brand or model it is Swampy; it's so old (or maybe I should say, I'm so old) I don't remember.

They have tightening nuts and are adjustable, but that is the best way to run them when your trolling for walleye with bottom bouncers...you actually want it level with water surface or slightly angling down. It helps the bottom bouncer do its thing better.

I'm trolling pretty slow when fishing this way, usually like between .5 mph and 1.5 mph. I know what you're saying, you'd think you are going to loose your rod...but it never happens. But as you mentioned; I never stick my pole in those until I've let my line out and the boat is moving.

It doesn't take much to back pressure at all to keep a rod in one.
The first pic is a pike??
It's a shame they don't have northerns in Colorado...it could have been a Pike's Peak pike pic.
40.) Swamp Fox - 07/04/2015
+19....LOL

What if someone could show you a piqued Pike's Peak pike pic? Would that pique your interest?

I like what the low swivel-through base lets you do. :tu:
